- Would you try this deadly fish?? There's a holiday here in Egypt which started over 4,500 years ago, and is still being celebrated today. On this day, Egyptians love to eat Fseekh, a fermented fish that has also been eaten for thousands of years. Today, I tried that fish. And let me tell you....

This is the most realistic first impression of tasting fseekh 😂
Rancid! Astonishingly terrible 🤣
yeah seems like an electric shock hit from top of head to bottom toe :)
Dear, you didn’t waste the entire fish. You bought it with good intentions and you didn’t insult the vendor by asking him for a tiny taste. You bought the whole fish and gave it your best shot. Good for you. These hard core culturally traditional foods are sometimes an acquired taste. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Thank you for your kind words 😌🙏
You have noble morals. You did not want the natives to feel that the taste of fesikh was very bad. The child came wanting a selfie in the middle of all this, and you did not embarrass him either. You deserve at least Egyptian citizenship and a free medical examination for your patience.❤🇪🇬
Oh yeah that kid stuck out his hand for me to shake too! I felt bad for not shaking it, but I wasn't about to get my nasty fish hands all over his, I hope he somehow understood that is why 😅
I think that fish can only be eaten after grilling, or do not eat fish 😂@@Gventures
@@bimconstruction87 😅Well, I do like some sushi, which is raw. But I think overall I do prefer cooked fish. And I definitely do not like fermented fish! 🤣
I'm Egyptian (born & bred) and I can never get myself to be anywhere near the unbearable smell of feseekh, let alone eat it 😂 Like the Durian fruit, feseekh is one of those extremely polarizing foods I guess, locals either love it or hate, there's no in-between 😀 I personally stand by my steadfast aversion to feseekh 😂 the overpowering fermentation stench is just not for me 😂
@@SuperTablets I stand with you 😅😆
You made that cat very, very happy. She probably thought it was Christmas. I loved all the cats in Cairo. On the street I stayed on people attended to the strays. Very sweet to see
Yes, that makes me super happy to see too. I always carry around a little bag of cat food and feed the strays I see. Also a big bag of cat food at my home to feed the strays outside

Bless your heart! I hope your upcoming video about Coptic Christians highlight THE FACT that all Egyptians can be considered descendants of Pharaohs, Coptic Christians can be thought of as "the natives of Egypt" like united states' native tribes. Under Al-Hakim BeÁmr Allah "aka Al-Mansour Ben Abdel Aziz, aka Abu Ali" 985 A.D to 1021 A.D; Coptic Christians were ORDERED to stop using the Coptic language "which is derived from Hyroglifics" in daily communications, and use the Arabic language instead, and to make sure NOBODY speaks Coptic language anymore, Al-Hakim BeÁmr Allah ORDERED cutting tongues of ANYONE caught speaking the Coptic language, hence "effectively" eradicated Coptic Christians' language that hardly spoken by Coptic Christians in this time and age, except in some church mass services.

I am an Egyptian/American male, born in Alexandria to an Italian mother and an Egyptian father.
I immigrated to the USA in 1980 and live in Seattle, WA, one of the most beautiful states in the US. You are Fantastic! You really take the time to explain everything you talk about clearly, which shows how much you study your subjects thoroughly. Please keep up the great work and thank you for all the information you provided. I am enjoying every video you have made and are making. Thank you.
Thank you so much!!! I really do care about the videos I make, and I try my best to be as accurate as possible, and to give the honor and respect these ancient traditions and practices deserve. However, I still screw up the process or preparation of things sometimes, as clearly seen by the way I ate this fseekh 🤣 But I really appreciate you recognizing that and your kinds words. Much love from your motherland, Egypt! ❤
I grew up eating fesiekh like my mother. My father hated it. I remember when I was like 15 year old, my parents left home during Sham Elnessim, I had a guy who used to work for us, buy me 2 Stella beers. I had 2 fesiekh by myself with beer. Many years later, after moving to USA, It was almost impossible to find fesiekh in US. Couple of years ago, I decided to make my own fesiekh. I used Mackerel fish instead of Mullet fish. My Lebanese wife didn't like it. For me it was Dejavu again. Thanks for the video
Wow, you really do like it! I can't believe anyone likes this fish, it's hard to wrap my head around 😅 Beer and fseekh 🤣
OMG, me and my wife laughed so loud. That’s so funny tho!!!!😂😂😂
You should've order it cleaned and ready to eat!

Haha, no one eats feseekh or ringa on its own. It's much better when you douse it with lemon and eat it with bread 😄 I loooove durian and its smell though so i might be built different. Nice content! I miss Egypt
I did bring the lemon and squeezed it directly into my mouth! It still wasn't enough 🤣Nor the onion nor the bread nor Tahina. Nothing is enough to mask that taste. But like you said, you like durian, and like I said in the video, I didn't like that either 😄

You should add olive oil and lemon juice and soak it in it before u eat it .. this is how u properly eat feseekh especially as a beginner.. plz try it that way and im sure u gonna love it that was approved by other foreigners who tried it that way..
I am done trying this, and I've heard from other foreigners who did have it "properly prepared" that they still hated it. I think I just fall into this category. Like I said, I already don't eat a lot of fish and don't like a lot of fish as it is. Fseekh is level 100 of eating fish, I'm a level 2.
I don’t think you could have planned for this to be more perfect. It went from bad to worse with not having a knife, to the knife breaking to your reaction 🤣🤣 I feel bad for how much I was laughing.
Oh I'm happy you got some laughs from it, it had me laughing! (later) 😆 It really was a disaster 🤣

You Arabic is getting better
The Egyptians are Copts. I am a Coptic Muslim, and my neighbor is a Coptic Christian, and the word Coptic means Egyptian. Yes, there are Arab tribes that live in Egypt, but not everything you see in Egypt is Egyptian. There are Greeks, Turks, Armenians, Arabs, and Egyptians, but the Egyptians are not Arabs. We are Copts.
The comment is to praise Giselle’s Arabic language skills and Arabic is the spoken language in Egypt 🇪🇬
It has nothing to do with the religious background or ethnicity. Giselle’s channel and followers don’t condone certain group over another group.
It is non Denominational group all the people are enjoying her content.
So please don’t go down that route.
@@husseinabd6937 Egyptians are unique! We basically speak less than %10 Arabic and the other %90 percent is derived from other passed on to us from other languages and cultures like French, British ,Turkish/ ottoman, Greek, but mostly also Coptic which is a modern version or you could say a written version of the spoken ancient Egyptian language. And it all makes up the modern language we speak now in Egypt. And the is more and more on this fascinating topic!
You should have tell the shop to peel it for you and clean it and add some lemon and little oil on the top of it and then put it in a styrofoam plate! Maybe next time though!😊
I should have. Never again though 🤣
Never say never!😊

Why do you try "fesikh" or salted fish? It is difficult for us Egyptians to bear. Some of us have been accustomed to eating it since childhood. It is not necessary for you to try it, and why does the store not clean it, prepare it, remove the forks, and clean it so that it is ready to eat?
You can try smoked "renga fish" herring, it tastes good
Watch the video and you will see I tried ringa in this video too.
The store didn't clean it for me maybe because I didn't ask them to, because I don't know how to ask that in Arabic. Anyways, it was an experience and made for a funny video 🤣 And ringa ain't bad

That was crazy tbh. You really needed a local Egyptian to guide you through this experience. But I doubt anything would make you like it. It's something like Swedish Surströmming. Only local people aquire tolerance for it.
I also noticed that you didn't give fseekh to cats But trust me their ancestors must have ate fseekh with the pharaohs long time ago. 😂
I did give fseekh to the cats, I just didn't record it. Some Egyptians have been writing in telling me that cats don't like fseekh anyway, too much salt. I dunno, I just left it on the street by a cat and drove away 😅

Ringa is easier to start with just a smoked herring & actually most of the ringa in Egypt is imported from other countries as Netherlands but in general it can be eaten after some warming on the stove then add some Tehini or vegetable oil & lemon juice, Tomatoes, green onions, & lettuce

You are doing real good content. I lived for many years in Egypt, now back in Switzerland. Eating a fisich I would never do. So many people died in so many years. I remember 1991. Is this delicious? Oh Gisselle, you are just so brave... and all in the name of culture and custom!!
Your classic line about the Fseekh was at 7:33 when you said... "The worst year on record was in 1991 when 18 people actually died from eating this fish... so let's try it"!!! 🤣
Quickly changing the subject to the Ringa/smoked herring, you may know that smoked herring is sometimes eaten in the UK for breakfast, especially in my home country of Scotland, where they are called kippers!! They are traditionally split from head to tail down the 'dorsal ridge' and 'hinged open', which is normally how they are sold in shops.
I haven't had a kipper for a while now that I am living in Spain, but my choice of cooking them is poaching or boiling them for a short time. They are so tender, fleshy, full of flavour, and can be served with a knob of butter. Nice!!
Your video was both honest and brutal 🥴but highly enjoyable!! Your eating of the Fseekh was agony to watch, and only through my fingers held up to my face in horror!!
😀William
Thank you William! Yeah this video was fun to make, even if horrible to taste 🤣
I didn't actually know they ate smoked herring for breakfast in Scotland! That sounds like one hell of a breakfast, especially for someone like me who rarely eats fish 😅 But I must say, the way you described the preparation and the way people eat it (with butter) sounds like it could be a tasty meal. You know I would (of course) try it 🤣
@@Gventures - Nice one Gisselle! Well, I know you like experimenting with food, so I certainly think it's worth giving kippers a try, if you can track them down! 😀
Preparing feseekh has a special ritual. It is not eaten directly from the store to the mouth 😂
Because of its high price, we bought fresh fish, salted it and preserved it, and now we will wait 8 days 😅
Yeah, so I've been told in the comments. Oh well, now I know! 🤣
the guy in the store of feseekh can cut it for you small pieces, put it in a small box just the meat in oil, anyway you should give the feseekh another chance :D its hard to understand at the first time
Lol oh no no no. I wish I would have done it more properly the first time, but that is the last time I am trying fseekh. No matter how differently it is done, I know I would still hate it. I don't eat or like much fish, and fseekh is just too much for me
HAAAAAAAA! Your face was a picture after eating the rotten fish. It's ok, you can have my share as well! Very, very funny!
Never again😂
Usually no one eating feseekh or renga plane like that, you may need to get the fish skinned, then add oil, vinegar and a lot of lemon. You may give another try at a decent Resturant
No way 🤣
Great content Gventures, I have a quick question for the visa on arrival and extending process for me and my wife do we apply together for the arrival visa and the extention
Hi there! For the visa on arrival, yes you both just get in line at the kiosk and tell them you need a visa on arrival, one for you and one for her. Same for the visa extension process, go to the window and tell them you both need to apply to extend. You should both be able to do it at the same time, though you may get separate numbers, you should be able to do it one after the other and be at the window at the same time 😊
Thank you so much and another question do you have to leave once a year after been in the country for more then a year
@@malcolmrichardson5367 That's a good question, I'm not actually sure. They may just allow you to extend again...
Not many people are brave enough to try fesikh, i salute you : )
Hilariously, its eaten and loved by a lot of people in Scandinavia, Ice Land and Eastern Europe. I think the type of fish is different but its fermented and salted the same way. It even has the same smell and taste. I suppose Nords, Slavs and Egyptians are just built different.....
No way 🤣 there had to have been something supposed to be done w tha fish, i wonder what recipe they would use w that fish or was it really supposed to be served like that 😲 like salted fish sure. You're brave G. I know this was like 3 months ago but I'm super curious as to what could be done w that. Dear God girl. At least you tried it 😂lmao
Lol. Read the other comments, because A TON of Egyptians wrote in telling me I f-ed up 🤣 I mean, it is still essentially eaten this way. But I should have apparently first gotten it already sliced open and ready to eat in that manner, and then soaked it in vinegar or something like that for a long time. I would never do that because that would mean I would have to bring this stanky ass fish into my own apartment 😆 But aside from that, it's still eaten like this with some lemon and green onion. Many Egyptians love it, and many Egyptians do not. Renga is much more popular (and I understand why).
I’ve been watching all your video we are staying in abdin Egypt so your videos have been so helpful I didn’t want to stay near the pyramids I wanted to feel like a local with my kids. so hopefully I picked a good area 😅

The Egyptian calendar is used by Egyptian farmers ("fallahin") to schedule their farming cycle, it's not just the Coptic Church
Yeah I know that. But it's the called the Coptic calendar or the "Alexandrian Calendar" these days. I am going to be mentioning that in my next video
The hard part is getting the stench out of your clothes and if you did that at home, out of the walls and the furniture. My beloved late parents loved fiseek, but I wouldn’t allow that stuff in my house. The ringa is a little more palatable but I will pass on that too.
We can agree on that. I might try ringa again, but not with me "preparing" it 😆
I laughed out loud😂😂 your expression was omg 😂 fesikh either you like it or never like it but anyway this is not the way how to eat it 😂
Yeah I found that out the hard way 🤣
Without smell, it is better than salmon. I tried it twice when I visited Egypt in 2001. this meal was making them strong and I think because this type of fish contains a lot of omega 3. Then you should try the old cheese.😂💀🥒
I could never get past the smell I guess 🤣Actually I like the old cheese just fine, I like strong flavors. Just not rotting fish corpse 😆
And it must be eaten this in open place like a garden because this will execute the house.🤣
We’re kinda ok with intestinal infections here in Egypt 😂
@@shadielkassar68 I've eaten some "weird or unusual" foods in my life, like scorpion, yak, camel, kangaroo, crocodile, and cow brains, but fseekh was by far the worst flavor I have ever tasted 🤣
@@Gventures it’s strong,No doubt. But my point is the surrounding media which preserve the fish is horribly smelly when the actual fish meat is tasty
Don’t assume it’s popular though even amongst Egyptians 😅
Wow, for someone who hasn't tried it before , you are so brave . Egyptians get used to fesiekh from a young age , not every Egyptian like it and you will find 7/10 who really enjoy it. Mostly, we try it once a year and we do really eat it on certain occasions from time to time, Like once or twice a year.
The proper way to eat it is by cutting it in half, remove bones squeeze lemon on it .
Ringah " Smoked Herring " is a North East Atlantic fish and there is a Dutch way of smoking it by using a certain type of wood that gives it this Special smoky taste and this " Yellow Color " .
Don't forget that Most have eggs inside " fish roe " and they tase really well, same as caviar !
The proper way to eat is by
1- Put it above the flame and heat it for 10 seconds on both sides (Optional) .
2-Cutting it in half and remove any bones
3-Squeeze some Lemon
4-add Vinigar and some cumin
5-You eat it with tomatoes/green onions/cucumber
You can ask the shop to fillet the fish and do all these steps for you.
If only I had known, I would have asked to get it already a bit prepared 😅 I did asked for smoked ringa though, so I think it was put on the flames for a little bit. But who really knows 🤣🤷♀️
😮😅 i had to pauze it before you eat is, i know the smell and rememberd😅 you are a brave warrior to try this , thanks for the history again, i love it ❤
It's acquired taste not everyone can handle it you are so brave to try it 😂
I knew you wouldn't like Fesekh, me myself have never even tried it 🤣 and honestly most Egyptians nowadays don't eat Fesekh anymore, and as you mentioned it's also not the healthiest option to have.
Wish you could try the Renga salad, it's so much better, but glad you got the chance to try it anyway 😊
Also, thank you so much to take time to read and to explain about the origins of Fesekh and Renga and their connection to Sham El Nesim (The beginning of spring season).
Hope you had a great time though being outside in green areas during one of the best seasons in Egypt.
Next time I can make a Renga salad for you and send it to where you live through InDrive or something. Or we can meet at metro station, just let me know if you don't mind.
And good luck with the upcoming videos 😊❤️
Thank you for all of your help and suggestions Nada, it really did save me while trying this! ❤ Even though I was ill prepared with no knife and didn't eat it like I should have, I would have not brought any tahina or lemons with me if you had not told me to, and then it truly would have been terrible! 🤣 That lemon saved me 😂
And yes it was a beautiful day, I enjoyed the park and going outside to experience this holiday 😊
Oh I couldn't ask you to prepare Renga for me, that would be too much! But it would be cool to meet you for coffee or something sometime, if you're ever free I'd love to, my treat. Thank you so much once again 7abibty 🥰🙏
بتعملى سلطه الرنجنه ازاى If you don't speak Arabic. You can write the recipe in English
@@mohamed33129 My bf is Egyptian so he could help with any translation, I actually ask him for help a lot 😅
@Gventures
Thank you 7abibty 😊❤️
Of course, I'd love to meet you soon! We can meet at Downtown Cairo, and I'd love to make a Renga salad for you to try, plus some other delicious Egyptian food/snacks, I'm sure you'll like 😊
Are you staying in Egypt till the Eid, or are you leaving soon?
@mohamed33129
And I'm going to write the recipe in English as well:
1- I cut open the renga and get off the caviar (if it has some inside)
2- Put it on a tray and into the oven till the skin is burnt.
3- I remove the skin and the fish bone (it becomes easier to remove them when you grill it like I mentioned).
4- Then I prepare a plate of chopped onions mixed with lemon juice, add the renga meat to it, plus the following ingredients (raw tahini sauce - vegetable oil - chopped bell peppers different colors)
You can also add chopped tomatoes (but don't put a lot 'cause it has much water, and it makes the renga salad not taste really good)
5- Mix everything together and add extra oil or lemon juice if needed...That's it 😊
You should have bought the fesikh and ringeh open and cleaned of bones so that the experience would be less bad. Don't eat it directly without bread; you should put it inside the bread. However, no one eats fesikh plain except for professionals
And a professional I am clearly not 🤣 I have been getting a lot of advice on how to eat it in the comments, unfortunately, it's a little late for that, now that I have already tried it, but, good information for someone that plans to try it themselves! Maybe they will see the comments and learn what NOT to do from me 😆
Cats do not eat fesikh because it is very salty. I tried to give my cat fesikh, but she refused to eat it
Ohhhh really. I just left it on the street near a cat. I guess maybe the cat just never ate it 😅 I got rid of the fseekh first because it was making the bag smell horrible, even as I was driving my motorcycle, so I pulled over when I saw a cat and dumped it near that cat, then drove to a different area and dumped the ringa for the one at the end that I filmed. Thanks for the info
Haha awesome video! Your facial expression when you had your first bite of Fesekh is priceless lol! But this doesnt count though cause you ate it completely wrong. The skin of the fish should of been removed and only the meat should be placed in a plate or bowl, immersed in olive oil, lots of lemon juice, small pieces of onion and bell pepper cut on top of it and mixed well..then eat the fesekh inside a piece of bread and enjoy! I advice you to buy the fesekh from any store that sells it "ready to eat". you will not hate it as much trust me lol! plus, always wear gloves when you eat fesekh because if you don't the smell will stick to your fingers for hours! but anyways great video i enjoy your vlogs in Egypt a lot :)
Thank you. I've been told how to eat it properly now by dozens of people in the comments. But like I said in the video, there's no amount of vegetables or lemon (or anything else) that could make this fish better. I won't be trying it again 🤣 But this is good information for anyone else who is thinking about trying it 😅🙏
@11:57 your face reaction was hilarious 😂😂😂. Why did you eat it?! 🤦🏻♂️. I'm an Egyptian and I will never ever eat Fiseekh in my entire life. For me smoked herring (Ranga) is fine but Fiseekh, I will never do it even if I got paid. No thank you I'm good 😅😂😂😂😂
Lol, I knew it was going to be bad, but I didn't think it was going to be THAT bad! Wow, I was in for a surprise 🤣 I like to try new things, even if it is just to discover that I hate it. Which is the case for fseekh lol. At least, it made for a funny video. And now I can confidently say, fseekh is horrible 😂
@@GventuresThank god you didn't try Mulawhih, it's even worse than Fiseekh. My mom got one time like 10 years ago I didn't even want to open the fridge. It's more than horrible. 😂😂😂😂 you're way braver than me. Good for you. 😅
@@ThePolaris07 I can't imagine worse than fseekh 🤢I will never try Mulawhih 😅
You and i talked about eating faseek a while ago...i laughed so hard just now...i had the same reaction with a smaller piece..lol
Yeah it's a big NOPE for me 🤣
1 . Gloves
2. Cut to fillets use knife or scissors to remove bone
3. Vinegar and onion
1. See fseekh shop
2. Keep walking, do not stop at it
3. Have a good day with no fseekh
😅
Sis the way I literally cheered when U said "nada told me to bring some tahini and lime and so on for renga" 😂 I was all the time thinking what now will she eat it like that oh no shes getting it but not gonna get the whole experience :') haha glad U knew what to do atleast
Ps I hate fesekh idk how my parents like it 😂 tho it's probably acquired taste, I used to dislike herrings then suddenly one day I just crave it All the time
We eat em after ramadan (eid) too idk why, not just sham nessim anymore ig we love em too much to eat em just once a year and forget em
And wow i also thought "its not gonna go to waste just give it to cats" and u did nice job ❤
Haha, yes, thank God Nada told me to bring that, otherwise I never would have! 😅 I discovered I still didn't eat the fseekh or renga quite properly as I should have (like buying the entire fish 🤣 not cut up or prepared to eat), but oh well! It was a learning experience, and something I certainly won't ever forget! 😆 I also LOVE cats, happy they got a good meal out of it 😅
your reaction was hilarious ... seems like an electric shock hit you from top of head to bottom toe :) ... feseekh meal must go to preparations b4 eat ... you need to see videos how-to before you try ... and you must eat it with bread it's not kinda solo food, for me i don't like and neither eat :) but i like renga alot ... renga also need a preparation but much easier than feesekh
🤣🤣🤣 I feel bad for you, Giselle! I was there four years ago. I didn't know it was going to be that bad too.
🤣
I am egyptian and i tried feskh once in my life once and for all
Believe it or not Im Egyptian and I’ve never had the audacity to try it 🤣
Ahaha, actually a lot of my Egyptians friends have said the same 😅
Loved d cats enjoyed it ... happy.. nice vid again giselle❤❤
🤣🤣🤣 i'm aan Egyption live in Europ now and i wish to have fessech🤣🤣🤣 mmmoh nice teast.. so for people who did't try first to eat anchovies from a kanned,or anchovies pizza and realy like does like it's teast&smell, don't try fessech it's much stronger in teast&smell.. you got to use to it, try anchovies first.. i love fessech❤️🇪🇬🇪🇬🇪🇬😅😅😅
Lol yeah like I said in the video, I don't normally even eat fish. I have never tried anchovies before, and I never had herring before filming this video either. So for me the taste was truly horrific 🤣 But it was definitely an experience I won't forget soon, and made for a funny video 🤣
@@Gventures lol 😅😅😅 i mis that part that( you don't eat or like fish) 😱😱😱🥶🥶🥶 then you go strat forword trying fesseckh,,,(mind your step😁😁😁) step by step , too praive from you..anyway Enjoy Egypt&be safe!!! 🤞🙏

Thank you for your video several months ago asking people if they felt Egypt was safe! Since it's been a while, do you think it's still the same? We are planning to travel there in early July.
Oh yeah, completely safe, same as before. The most dangerous thing here is still just the traffic 😆 But July is going to be hot hot hot, so prepare for the heat! 😅
@@Gventures Thank you! 😊
Hello there :), you're very welcome to visit Egypt anytime, and it's completely safe like @Gventure kindly advised. The thing is and If I may provide an advice, I wouldn't really recommend visiting Egypt during the peak of summer which is June, July, August, till mid September I believe, , the weather during these months is really hot and it may affect how you will enjoy the activities or outings in general, so I would recommend visiting later on in the Autumn, spring or winter, the weather is really good then and you will love it.
