  • I had never been interested in long-range shooting and didn't think I needed to invest time or energy in pursuing it. When ‪@Gunwerks‬ invited me down to their Long Range University, I had the opportunity to hang out with a bunch of fun guys who were passionate about hunting and shooting and who had the experience and skills to help me raise my capabilities behind a rifle. Since attending the LRU, I've found my confidence in short- and medium-range shooting opportunities to be through the roof. My visit to the LRU was an incredible experience, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to every hunter, whether a Gunwerks rifle owner or not.

Phil is an outstanding instructor, and teaches information in an understandable manner. Each persons distance for ethical shot varies by terrain, weather, and level of practice. Great video.

You nailed it, Greg! Interesting that some of the hunters who criticize taking an animal with a rifle at long range are the same ones who have no problem shooting a modern compound bow, at over 400 fps at an animal at 90 or so yards, then bragging about it. To me, same thing. You are just using your particular weapon's full potential. I have been blessed to hunt in the Yukon with Chris Widrig in 2019 and took B&C caribou at 496+ yards. There was no way we were gettting closer to it. I am glad I had a good rifle and the practice behind me to take this animal at that yardage and take it ethically. Otherewise, my wall would not be adorded with this beautiful animal. If you are a person who thinks you should not shoot an aniaml at 1000 yards, then don't do it and let us hunt our hunt the way WE want. Thank you, Greg!

Thanks, man! I'm glad I hit the mark for you (pardon the pun). Great work taking an ethical shot on a champ of a caribou. Those are exactly the situations that training like the LRU is meant for.

My only question/concern about long range hunting, is, what happens when the trigger breaks while the scope is fixed on an animal at 700 to 1000 yards, and the animal takes a step, and is crippled, runs off to die a slow death after not being able to be found.

    • @GregMcHalesWildYukon

Hi Brian, when the bullet leaves the barrel of my 7 mm SAUM, it's travelling at 2718 fps. It would cover 300 yards in a little more than 0.3 seconds. It will take about 0.8 seconds to travel 700 yards. Now, a caribou can travel how far, from a standing start, in 0.5 seconds? Probably far enough to make the shot miss where I was aiming. Would it be far enough to make it a wound that will result in a slow death? Perhaps, but it won't be a hind-quarter injury. I think a follow-up shot will be very possible.
You do raise a good point, and I think taking these longer shots requires the hunter to be very careful. I would choose to shoot when the animal has just lowered his head to feed, making the chance of a rapid change in position unlikely.
I believe a key point I make in the video is that training to shoot 700 yards on paper makes those 300 and 400-yard shots that much easier. I am NOT saying that I will regularly shoot at 700 yards. If you have watched any of my episodes, you know that I get as close as possible on every occasion. You must also know that I am out there to take mature animals, and not to sling lead for bragging rights.
Thus, my point is that we should all train to be the most competent shooters we can be. This is much more ethical that training to shoot 300 yards, and then shooting at our maximum distance. This is much more likely to result in the outcome you mention.

My sweet spot is under 100 yards:) And I can shoot well I was the #1 archer in my league. My longest kill was 190 yards at a whitetail deer. It would be nice to get good at the long range shots for my next western hunt

Getting to 100 yards is great (unless you are filming!). The idea is to make shots that are long range for you now into medium range.

Isn’t it funny how people try to tell you what YOUR limitations are. If we all minded our own business and focused on ourselves it would just be so great. Btw I’ve never taken an animal past 350 yards but that’s just the limitations I have on myself because I am aware of my own limitations, at least currently.

I believe it's about having somewhere near 1100 FPE at the target. So I would assume you are shooting some pretty large bullets in a Magnum format if you're shooting to 700+ yards hunting. Is that right? It's just my opinion based on all I've read. You can disagree and I won't be offended... 😀

    • @GregMcHalesWildYukon
      @GregMcHalesWildYukon  2 года назад

Hi David, I'm not sure what you're trying to say! I think one of the basic points I am making is that shooting paper our past 700 is a great way to improve skills and capabilities for closer shots.

@@GregMcHalesWildYukon I get it. I thought you were suggesting hunting out beyond 700+ yards. I would love to practice at long range. And I totally agree. I practice out to 350 yards and in the Northeast where I live you rarely see a shot of even 200 yards. Now, after practicing at 350, a 200 Yd shot is easy (whereas it used to make me nervous).

    Hi Greg,
Good presentation and Well said! Jack O'Connor never shot anything over 500 yards and there is a reason for it. Albeit, he did not have the modern equipment of today and if he did, he may have taken some longer shots, but I doubt it. The unfortunate thing is there are too many unethical people shooting at game well in excess of 1000 yards, there are a lot of examples on RUclips. They have no respect for the animal, just a moving target to them. Merely bragging rights. Unfortunately they are painting every hunter with the same brush! I hope some see your presentation and perhaps change their ways, but I highly doubt it. Thank you, you certainly have my respect.

Thanks Lahave. I can't do much more than making videos like this. I know a lot of hunters who know and respect their limitations. I think it's important to realize that training like this does not mean it's okay to start shooting at crazy distances, but rather to master ethical distances, whatever those may be for a particular person.

Josh, fyi the largest "city" in the Yukon has a population of approximately 24000 people, truly a big city. Not that any of that matters. What does matter is that Greg was simply trying to convey the point that practice at long range makes the "ethical shot" even more ethical.
