Berkin Celik yes 😭 I’m gonna be honest I cry at least once during every season.
This show makes me angry. This show makes me cry. This show makes me hopeless. This show makes me hopeful. This show makes he happy.
All the other live action Superman make me feel bored and sleepy.
I LOVE SMALLVILLE.
I literally have to rewatch it every year. I’m on the final season right now, and this is my third rewatch.
So much time, effort, and love put into these characters. I listen to the theme song by Remy Zero ever day on my playlist.
Smallville is what makes me feel heartbroken. Lex can't be friends with Clark because he can't see past his own anger. And clark flips and turns on Lex just because of the way other people see him. Mainly, if the two were completely honest with each other and the Kents, Pete, and Clark would have just seen Lex as more than his father's actions, Lex and Clark would have resolved all their problems in 3 seasons. And the heartbreak is seeing Lex get so close to exposing clark. Every time he knows Clark's secret, he accepts and loves clark as his brother, but every time, Lex has his memories taken from him and he can never be happy. It's true tragedy.
7.5/10 in all honesty , but still a big part of my childhood
Best on screen lex Luthor. Hands down most developed and interesting to watch
John Cryer: Hold my kryptonite.
@@mayotango1317 he's good but doesnt Beat smallville Lex in my OPINION
Supergirl Lex is the best onscreen villain from the Luthor line. I adore his performance

Can we all just take a step back and realize that My immortal by Evanescence was used and it's surprisingly good for the scene.
Chad Boris smallville was full of amazing music from evanescence to sum41 to rascal flatts. It’s definitely a product of it’s time, and it wears that badge boldly in its music, and i love it even more for that.
It was sooo good. Rewatching it now I’m so moved by the score
I used to watch smallville very week without fail for the ten years it was on air. This analysis is great. Brings back memories of my childhood
Best Lex Luthor,
Best Jonathan Kent,
Lionel Luthor scariest villian as good as William DaFoe Goblin,
Best Lios Lane,
Has the most grounded and highly relatable Clark Kent,
New Characters like Chloe Sullivan and Lana Lang are great,
Conveniently setup Justice league...
Show ran for nearly 10 years...
What better could it become...
Best Martha Kent,
Lana Lang wasn't a new character.
Agreed...
Danny Benhur agreed with everything except Lana Lang wasn’t new. She was in Superman 3 played by the same actress that plays Martha Kent in the show. And she as also in the animated show.
And Lana was in the comics. She's as original as they get.
I agree on everything but two things I loved Martha Kent but I feel like she could have been used way more they focused a lot on Jonathan and second I did not like Lana at all Louis was way better in my opinion
Smallville was ahead of its time.
I’ve met Michael rosenbaum in person I’ve was so excited as I’m a huge huge fan of superman and smallville
What was he like?
Well he isn’t as affectionate as meeting Kevin spacey.
He’s kinda fridgid.
@@somerandolad He’s really nice and funny!
The first episode of Smallville I ever watched was the season finale of season 4. I can't even fully recall what made it stand out to me, but I marathoned seasons 1-4 on DVD before season 5 aired and was a fan ever since. I feel like "heart" is always the key element to making every superhero story work. Smallville could get me hyped, make me tense, and move me to tears at a whim. It's the best interpretation of Superman we'll ever have.
Drake Chandler I always found Season 4 highly disappointing, save for the first four episodes and the finale, which were artless. I still consider it the worst of the whole run because of its mishandled subplots, wonky character dynamics and the highest percentage of bad individual episodes of the run. But that's me.
Johnathon Haney For me It’s Season 7
Drake Chandler
The season 4 finale is well-written and very enthralling, so I'm not surprised it persuaded you to watch the show. It's definitely one of the show's best episodes.
@@tornadochaser2457 It's a weird thing when you contrast Seasons 4 and 8. They have opposite problems in that Season 4 had a strong beginning and ending but a really messy middle whereas Season 8 had a weak beginning and ending with a solid middle story barring a few weird plot decisions.
Johnathon Haney
*SPOILER ALERT*
I really liked season 8 actually, I felt like it revitalised the show after it had become stale. I'd argue season 7 is a mess of storylines that don't amount to much - Kara losing her powers and memories is a prime example. The Veritas stuff was interesting, but things were getting repetitive with Lana and Lionel - Lionel's story had reverted back to "Can he be trusted or not?" again. It was intriguing to see the new Lana and her dynamic with Clark now that they were finally together, but their relationship had become so dragged out by that point. Season 8 injected some fresh blood into the show, even if it got rid of some great characters. Clark had finally made progress and began actively pursuing his destiny, taking charge and being more commanding instead of moping about Lana. The show became more fun, focusing on the adventurous side of being a superhero, as Clark actually became one with "The Red Blue Blur", and Davis' story was enticing due to the large stakes and tragic situation. Oliver was a fun addition due to his humour, and Tess was a great replacement for Lex, being compellingly dangerous in her own unique way. Lois and Clark's interactions, and the build-up to their inevitable destination was also a highlight, as their playful relationship was a wonderful replacement to the tiring Clark - Lana melodrama. The Metropolis sets were noticeably too small and fake looking, Doomsday should've been bigger, and the final fight was extremely anti-climatic, but I remember liking the rest for the most part.
I think seasons 4 and 7 are the worst. In season 4, the witches stuff was weird and corny, I don't think Lionel's desire to be good made much sense, and the storyline with the Teagues didn't amount to enough. The fractured Lex - Clark relationship was well done though, Lois was a fun addition, making things more enjoyable with her humour and sass, and it was nice to see Chloe evolve from just pining over Clark to a truly loyal friend. It's telling that a lot of the things in that season were abandoned moving forward. All the show's mythology really had was meteors having effects in the town, and Kryptonian keys to things. They tried to create more in season 4 with witches and the Teagues, but it wasn't working out, so they started using the Superman mythology in season 5, to their benefit.
Smallville is the reason why I like Superman and the DC Universe.
Same, I used to think Superman was boring and lame before Smallville, but after watching the show I became a fan for life. I just love how Superman is a great person not because he has all the powers and is the "boy scout", he's that good of a person because he had a loving home and great parents. Makes me smile when I think about that and how Smallville really showed that part of the character.
Me too
While Season one of Flash was particularly good I still think Smallville was the best WB/CW DC show.
Same here
Exactly
Same
Because at its core Smallville stayed a superhero show. Any romance in it was a minor plot. But all the Arrowverse shows go from superhero show to bad romance dramas 3 seasons in.
@@Xehanort10 Slightly agree, But I also think the real factor was Clark always stayed the central character of Smallville from the pilot to the series finale and would never work without Clark. Where as on Arrow, Supergirl, and Flash in particular those shows supporting characters started to outshine the leads and you could do Arrow, Supergirl, and Flash without Oliver, Kara, or Barry if needed just using Team Arrow, Team Supergirl/The DEO and Team Starlabs (I mean remember the we are Flash crap).
That is a great breakdown from a series near and dear to my heart. Nice catch!
Thank You 😊
I wish smallville was talked about more. It’s one of my favourite shows and it honestly teaches a lot on what it means to be good
I am glad you got that from the show!

Great video! As someone who is a huge Superman fan, I still haven't watched Smallville. Your insights have intrigued me.... I would love if you were to continue the topic of juxtaposition in order to create meaning. As Andrew Sarris says, "Hitchcock understands, as his detractors do not, the crucial function of counterpoint in the cinema. You cannot commit a murder in a haunted house or dark alley, and make a meaningful statement to the audience."
You should definitely check out the show, especially season 1-3, as well as 5, all great character stuff. I was thinking about doing a video about the obsession Batman has with the Joker and vice versa. About how their contrasting ideologies end up attracting them, almost like a love story.
Thanks so much for watching!

Good work!
Freaking solid. Smallville takes me back. Although it was cheesy as hell there is no denying that it had a lot of heart, and was quite revolutionary overall. Subbed.
Smallville is really great and should be remembered by the great beginning seasons with a lot of heart.
The song of the opening credits is simply an timeless masterpiece.
God damn, this video is just way too underrated, much like the show tbh

Visual storytelling at it's peak. This shot tells us everything about little Luthor just within a few seconds, Lex had everything yet nothing. No friends, no loved ones, nobody which the empty chair signifies. Also, the irony in that shot, various sweets and confectioneries were laid out on the table but Lex wept bitterly. And the way the camera moves away added a sense of depth and loneliness. Lex Luthor wouldn't have been a super villian if he had parents like ma and Pa Kent poor kid. I am in shock that a small TV show has more depth and heart than freaking Ant Man and the Wasp. Marvel take notes.
😂😂😂
When I think about who is Superman, I think about the Animated Superman from the 90s.
Arachni-Notion So do I. I love that show and to me, it’s my definitive Superman.
Arachni-Notion same. Smallville Superman sucks

For all the crap it gets, and even the fact that i just don't like Superman, I really did love this show.
This show made me love Superman. But I don't read many comics or even watch the other shows or movies, I just love the idea that Superman is so good because of his parents. Is not about the superpowers or how he is going to save the day, I love Superman because he's just that good because he grow up in a loving home with amazing parents, that's just a really nice message the show send.
@@ThePunisherSpider I love it too
Holy crap! That final bit, with playing those side-by-side without editing is amazing!
Lionel Luthor is such a great addition to the mythos of Lex's character
John Glover bossed every scene he was in.
The best part of the show was the Lex and Lionel father and son relationship.
This was a great series, but its biggest flaw was how stretched out it was. So much of the show felt like a soap opera with super powers.
So how does the CW super heroes do for you?
Myles Schutte most comic books are soap operas with superpowers
@Christopher Marlowe they run for a lot longer than that
Exactly.
In my opinion the best Clark Kent and the best Lex Luther. The show was quality from start to finish.

@@bluefire9147 ahhhh I like those kinds of things too haha, but I don't think some of those really moved the plot too much
Definitely the best Lex Luthor ever.
I love this show and this was a fantastic video. I'd love to see more, there is so much stuff like this in Smallville. For example, the episode in season 3 or 4 where Lionel goes evil again after being good for a while and setting up a a charitable foundation after being in prison. There's a shot where Lex's face is up close and you can see Lionel in the shadows behind him, to show that Lionel is hiding his true self. The same shot is used with Clark up close and Alicia behind him in the shadows, as she was lying about her intentions too. They took place in the Luther mansion and the Kent barn respectively.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Smallville is severely underrated, and when we get around to it, we would love to make more videos about it!
Season 1-4 cant even put into words the connections and reflections i have with the characters and the relationship dynamics in the show it was so wholesone i love the kent family dynamic and clana forever ;( also amazing dynamic between lex and lionel
Can I just point out that the music of Smallville just hits your emotions hard? It's not just the acting that gets you.
I'm still upset that Smallville didn't become it's own movie.
Some TV Shows need to be films with the original cast.
Smallville is too iconic to forget.
Absolutely amazing. This show was seriously extremely underrated. Great video essay.
Thank You! I know, Smallville get's so overshadowed by all the superhero shows these days, but it's still one of the best.
Thank you!
Man I met Tom welling almost a year ago and well I told him “hey man I just wanted to say you were my definitive superman and when I thought about the character, you are what came to my mind you are my superman and I can’t thank you enough for paving the ground for my favourite superhero”
Bruh what did he say?
that's so cool. what did he say?
You have quite an eye..I have started to rewatch Smallville and yeah it gets bogged down with some random episodes but the story is brilliant. I cried watching the Lex scene with his father because of how cold it was, how calculated he had to be early on versus the childhood Clark had where he got to learn things piece by piece. Martha recognizing the sacrifice his mother meant, it’s very empathic and full rounded. She didn’t feel slighted in the least and very accepting...god damn this is a good show. His humanity is his strongest point. The characters aren’t shallow they’re complex and not 2 dimensional. Greatly appreciated, loved the video.
Why is this the first Smallville analysis I've seen?!
Thank you for this!
Poor Lex 😢
Lex was always good. The bias we have when we watch the show is the same bias Clark has. Clark sees Lex as inherently evil and we as the audience think the same thing. But Lex was truly good. He just had bad luck.
I definitely want to see more Smallville discussion
Thank you for making a video about Smallville. i feel like everyone forgets that it exists.
We love Smallville, we'll take any opportunity we get to remind people that it's great. Thanks for watching :)
harshita gupta How can I forget a series that, at its best, makes me believe the Superman story again?
Not me it’s on Hulu
Both Rosenbaum & Glover were the best actors on the show, every scene with them felt so genuine & not like high school bs
Just started watching this recently. Jonathan Kent is fucking spectacular on this show and it has the best on screen Lex probably ever
I agree when I think of Superman, I think of Smallville. It was the best characterization of Clark and Lex. I think Smallville is still better than the current DC CW/Fox and Netflix MCU shows.
Smallville was everything that the DCEU should learn from. Smallville was the greatest of everything Superhero.
But,the problem is,snyderfans will never ever listen to Alex.
Smallville doesn’t get enough credit it deserves. Yeah it had some down yrs and issues, but it was still one of the best Super Hero Shows in yrs
I have such an emotional connection to this show that the background music you’re playing throughout the video still gives me chills as an adult. Crazy how much of an impact this show had on me.
Any idea of where i could find that background music?
@@davidnolde4598 in case you haven't researched it by now, during the scene in the barn it was playing My Immortal by Evanescence.
@@Gengh13 Yeah! Actually I meant the music that is played at Lionel's funeral but thanks for the help anyway👍
The. Greatest. Lex. Ever. I don’t care what you say but nothing ever will come even within a fraction of this. The best writing, incredible directing, and the acting is beyond any Lex I’ve ever seen.
I wholeheartedly agree.
I miss this show... :-(
It started all the superhero TV series
Memoria is a great episode. Every time you watch you can't help but tear up.
I was in HS when this show came out. I think I graduated one year earlier than Clark on the show. I've always thought my appreciation for this show was simple nostalgia, but this little essay reminded me of what the show had that the new CW DC shows lack and you nailed it right on the head when you said heart. I feel like the shows have little glimmers of it here and there. Flash is the closet to it, but still a far miss and maybe Arrow season 1 had some heart. There is also the focus on artistry. The people behind Smallville worked the show to be very wonderfully shot and even the music was always spot on. Most episodes, even villian of the week ones, had scenes that were just beautifully done and made the show feel more than it was supposed to be. From Episode 1 Season 1, when Lana finds Clark standing in front of the angel statue, to the series finale when Lex says, "I am the villain in this story." There were moments that were just epic.
Oh my gosh, I love Smallville, I used to watch it everyday with my parents.
Memoria is my favorite episode of that entire series. The setup is a bit hokey, but the execution and payoff is spectacular.
There needs to be more Smallville videos! This was awesome
I almost never leave comments on RUclips videos, but I want to say how great it is to see someone focusing on the strong stylistic and narrative choices behind Smallville. Thanks for making this!
Honestly, this is such an underrated video. Kinda forgot how good this show was, even though I just watched it completely again.
I started watching Smallville sometime in my junior year. It was after I saw Man of Steel and I became heavily interested in the Superman mythos because of it. Our local library has the first six of the show on DVD so I never did properly watch it all the first time around. When I started watching Hulu, I got to watch the whole thing. Smallville is one of THE greatest TV shows ever made, even if it's criminally underrated.
Loved this show as a kid. Recently rewatched it, and it brought back many memories from my childhood. The best show ever.
Probably my favorite show ever. I remember growing up watching this with my family. It was such a ritual. Even though looking back its def filled with cheese, nothing but love for this series.
This was awesome! love Smallville, keep it up.
thank you!
Nice timing on the end there. mad props
I remember when i rewatched the entire series again a few years ago i kept telling Lionel "for god sake hug your son" and tell him "its okay".
Nice job on this. I actually watch the show through the 10 seasons every year because I find the growth of all the characters really well done and it's enjoyable to watch it happen. But the relationship between Clark and Lex is really brilliantly handled. And it's interesting because you can't help but wonder, "What if Clark just told Lex his secret early on?" All that time Lex seems to be unable to allow himself to open up completely, what might have been if Clark proved to him it was safe to do so by doing so first? Might he have actually been able to pull Lex in from the darkside? It's very poignant. Of course for the sake of the mythos it couldn't be.
We need to talk about how good John Glover was in that show. Everybody, in fact, was top notch
God I love John Glover's performance as Lionel Luther in this series. Near the end of it, he was undoubtedly my favorite part.
I swear I never saw this video before... But when you said Smallville had something a lot of other superhero showed lacked...then that huge pause, I knew you were going to say heart lol I even said it out loud.
I think the reason Lex was saying "No" because he was thinking to himself "Dad if you actually did love me you wouldn't have treated me like you have all these years."
This video hit me right in the feels.
Very amazing work! I’ve seen Smallville in its entirety at least 4 times including its original run. Those two episodes among many others really showed how good of storytelling they were going for with both characters and like you said something the main movie characters extremely lack.
Watched Smallville for the First time just a year ago ,i still think its the best super hero show out there ,even animation are better than most current shows (Even Fox X men copied some fast clip of Clark)
7:15 that line is what made me break down into tears. Watching this video made me do it again
This was my show. I couldn't believe I was actually watching a show about Superman in his younger years back then. Also the addition of Lionel Luthor who went on to becoming one of my favorite characters was just perfect!
I'm just gonna say this Smallville Got the Super-man Origin Right (even if some seasons are "bad") because as thr show said in the final Season " The Suit doesn't make the hero."
That side by side comparison of those scenes was amazing!
Smallville 3x08 and 7x16 are two of my favourites episodes, because they show us how Lionel and Lex are developed, 3x08 show us how everyone left alone Alexander and how his father is trying to make him believe that he is insane and errase his memory just to get his own protection, at same time at the end HURT - Johnny Cash is played and fits so well, at the end we saw how Lionel loves, in a strange way Lex (Just comparable to how Norman loves Harry in Spider-Man 616 Continuity mainly), but Lionel will be always Lionel priority; and 7x16 show us how Lex kill his human being and show us how he is traumatized by his father, the descent on Lex into darkness; at same way I like 3x20 too because show us more directly Lex-Clark future destiny as villians.
I finally watched the show all the way through and I'm in love. (Stopped watching it as a teen because I got a job, but i fell like I appreciate it more now anyway) This was a great essay!
My heart....my heart
Kurt Bertrand Mine too...that episode devastated me.
I'm a Smallville fan and thanks for the video!
I grew up with Clark thanks to Smallville. This is my favourite TV drama of all time.
That second scence I get chills from even having seen that episode like 4 times great pick.
Well... I wasn't planning on tearing up! Great Video Essay.
Keep posting great content! Love your stuff!
If they cut like half the episodes and really tightened up the stories, we could have got a tighter show that maybe could have kept it's cast involved longer. Some of the filler "monster of the week" episodes were great but a lot are just really bad. Jitters, the witch episode, etc. Characters wouldn't need to be knocked out near as often. That always bugged me, I've been knocked out twice, once really really hard, and i still have some issues here and there.
Smallville was ahead of its time. This show with a 13 episode season would have been amazing. Even with 10 seasons. I've always wanted to do a rewatch of the entire series to do a "must-watch" list of how to rewatch the entire show, skipping episodes that are just filler.
Lana should have also left the show for good at the end of Season 3. She was the worst character in it.
@@ThePunisherSpider I'm sure there are essential episode lists out there already. Not that you still couldn't do that, might be yours is a bit different. Might look for one myself and give that a watch.
@@Xehanort10 Haha, that is true. Though I can't see Chloe the same anymore knowing what Allison Mack was up to in real life. Yikes.

Nice!! i really liked this show back in the day. I now remember why, it was all about relationships.
And the saddest thing, if Lex really did stay with the Kents for a year or two, i think he could've changed and that is really what gets you, because you really end up caring for the characters and Lex becomes evil and you don't want him to be.. you want everything to be okay but you know he needs to be stopped.. and you feel about it the same way superman does, He doesn't want to hurt Lex he doesn't want Lex to suffer or go to jail he just knows when he does evil he must be stopped.
Thank you so much HItop films for reviewing my 2 all time favorite shows Smallville and Gotham
Smallville was an amazing show. It show me views to be a good human and to do good in the world.
Fantastic video! "Smallville" is what made me a Superman fan (as well as Batman and comics fan in general). I knew next to nothing about comic books until being introduced to Smallville by my mom way back in 7th grade. The series shaped my view of the characters to be sure, but I then went on to read the comics and various other adaptations. I'm a huge fan of the Snyder movies, but "Smallville" will forever be MY version of the characters too. Just as a few generations ago, audiences will always look to Chris Reeve as "their Superman". I love your video analysis by the way. That moment in "Jitters" chokes me up every time, and "Memoria" is absolutely one of the top five best episodes of the entire series. I love how its focus is so purely on the Kent/Luthor contrasts. The way you summed it up with putting the two closing scenes in split-screen was phenomenal.
A brilliant analysis...well done. Ive watched many tv shows but this show i can honestly say changed me...
Im gonna rewatch this show now
I was never a big superman fan and I got into watching smallville late. I started watching it when reruns where being shown on abc family before season 6 started and started loving it pretty fast and went back and started catching up on what I had missed and than watched season 6 live. I have now seen ever single episode like 3-4 times have all the season. lex was always the best part of the show and it made you fell bad for lex and you always had that thought that if clark had been truthful with lex and had lex had a more loving dad maybe he would have turned out a lot different.
I loved the characterlization dynamic and growth of Clark and Lex, but man the standout for me is The journey of Lois & Clark props to Erica Durance & Tom Welling (Season 4 - 10) brilliant development from rivals to Romance and Destiny.
Your love for Smallville is almost enough to make me give it another shot... almost...
Watched them all back to back several times great show!
