Hey animation graduate here! What you’re talking about in most of your video, the ‘popping thing’ is an actual and important technique called overshoot! For anyone who wants to dig further into it, check out the 12 principles of animation, anticipation and overshoot is one of them :)
Totally agree! I was thinking about commenting on it too, since it’s kind of overlooked in animation tutorials. It’s super helpful, and really makes the animation look realistic/fluid
A yes, an even 100 likes. But seriously thanks for the info. I don't animate, I rarely even draw but I love learning about art techniques of different kinds. Its super interesting.
Absolutely! Alan Becker (Animator vs Animation) has a really good series about the 12 principles of animation.
@strawberrys0da714 thanks for the recommendation I've been trying to find something to teach me more about animation since being a character animator is my dream job.
That's what it's called! I'm looking to go into animation and I typically just call them my blur frames.
I hope leblehblehbleh never stops being a patron lol
Me too it wouldn’t be the same
what if thet change their username HUH? HUH?!??! exactly!!!
Right? Her saying it makes me happy every time~! That and Jabberdabberdoo

Sometimes I wish I came up with expressive poker face 🥹
I love how aggressive meglovania plays in the background while Lavender is talking. Quite surreal.
Was a bit ear piercing, at times, too.
I admire your approach to tutorials. No fat, just here's how it's done. =)
thank you so much!! 🤍
Fat?
@@BenIThinklike no useless rambling or extra unnecessary stuff

Animation student here. These tips are really good! Some of them did actually help me out.
I do want to mention that for the full body movement, the first example could work if you simply put one extra frame where the character goes past the key frames then returns to them. Now in technical terms this may sound confusing, but for example, let's say your moving your arm to the right. Before you ever move your arm to right, you move it slightly to the left first, and vice versa. The more power you need for a movement, like, per se, pitching a baseball, the more you'll move that arm in the opposite direction beforehand before actually pitching it. This is called anticipation and is one of the fundamental principles of animation that they teach in school.
Basically if you added some anticipation on the first example of the full body movement, it legitimately could work just fine along with some other minor tweaks.
Definitely very helpful, tysm for the tips! I'll definitely use these! I'm happy to be a member too ^^
aw thanks for watching early ! 🤍
@@LavenderTowne Ofc! I love your content, so I wanna support you!
10:20 ooh a smear there would add so much! making me wanna animate so badly! i miss it
I totally agree novice at animation so I’m crossing my fingers this will help 🤞
(Knowing Haley, it definitely will)
As a person hoping to one day create an animated show, this is very helpful! Thank you!
i swear yu will make that show!!!!
WOW! Honestly, these are the easiest/best tips I have ever seen! I have watched a lot of videos about the principles of animation about timing and leading up to motion.... But this was sooooo much more helpful! Especially coming from an illustrators perspective.
Great tutorial and undertale music?! This is not only teaching me how to animate this is also giving me a huge dose of nistolgia! Thank you for this tutorial Lavendertowne! Informative and entertaining as always!
MEGALOVANIA IN THE BG?????????
the last one is less an animation technique and more a story boarding technique or just key poses without in-betweens
“Among us skibidi” when she said that I almost died 💀 😂 10:38
oh my god, you totally made my day, thank you Haley ❤
Yay Lavender uploaded!!!!!
THANK YOU IVE BEEN NEEDING A TUTORIAL LIKE THIS FOR THE LONGEST TIME 💖💖💖💖💖
Thank you so much for your tutorials and I like how u explained ur tutorials in a concise and simple way. The snapping reminds me of the 12 principles of animations l learned such as stretching and squishing the poses to add that exaggeration
I love the lavender towne plushie its so cute ! Also thanks for the tutorials ! :)
as soon as i try to get into animation lavendertowne posts a vid on it??
i was literally getting ready to animate rn thank you so much for this video
Ive just started animation, these tips are so helpful! The eye tips look so helpful for beginners, and I appreciate how you included a more dynamic option thats not too difficult:D
Yippi lavender towne video
i love you leblehblehbleh never die
THANK YOU FOR DOING A VIDEO ON ANIMATION!! Ive been watching you for years now and your advice has helped me so much + I just got into animating! :3
For a cheap way of getting stuff out of the way. You should show them how to use secondary animation. 👏
:D, do this not that hath returned!!
Ooohhh thank youu!!! I want to learn how to animate and this is very helpful!!
Thank you for the tips I definitely have to try because animation is definitely hard to learn, even though I only done it few times myself as well
amazing!
also y'all help why am I so obsessed with this random description I created for a ai chat role play:
in a underground fighting ring there stood a burly man ahead of it all gruff looking yet there was something fatherly about him he bore a prickly mustache and short hair the color of chocolate he wore a suit beside him stood a short girl with hair tide back into pony tails as dark as Mahogany brown she wore a blind fold she wore a green dress with two layered brown belts she wore cream knee length socks and wore sneakers This man was known strictly as Mr. Arison with the only exception being for the thin girl as they stood on a balcony as in the arena a fight went on down below as this thin girl was this man's daughter and he was protective of her but always proud of her for even if she is blind she is a incredible fighter and outside of the ring he's a goofball loving and silly and affectionate towards his daughter
so far the girl, Rauca, has already taken down a champion fighter...she's like 12 and blind-
Damn fastest I have ever seen a vid
OMG SHE HAS A PLUSH
Ima need to watch that last part like 10 times lol😭
Can you please make a video? How do you make your character? Bedroom❤
“Classic lip flaps” -Lavender Towne 2024
O my word this was so helpful thank you so much for this I needed it real bad
Woww these r really good tips! I always like tips that cater to more caroony artstyles since I feel like most tutorials are for realistic or semirealistic artstyles :3
btw what animation app is this? ive been looking for a new one to use :P
AHHHH I NEEDED THIS SO MUCH. IT'S SUPER HELPFUL!! Thank you so much >< !
I’m so early and this is just what I was looking for today! Love your videos
how do u always make a video on a topic i’m currently struggling on holy-
i kind of taught myself animation as i go along, and what i've seen is that blinking is a waste of time, so is coloring in mouths most of the time. they fly by too fast for anybody to care.
This was in fyp faster then the notification
I was literally just thinking about starting animation! How are you in my head??
I was thinking of that too! :O
Could you do a video on lineart? Always struggled with that and yours always look sooooo good!
That animation program looks really neat! If you don’t mind, what’s the name of it? 🌻
Always with the super helpful tips, thank you so much 👌😮💨
Fun vid as always
This animation app is like an editing app but with animation i love this i need to try this app out but i think it cost money btw what's the name of this app is it Procreate Dream?!
You're not going to see the iris move because it moves to fast. It will just snap from one place to another. Since we can't actually see when our iris is moving (it would be really disorentating) it moves really fast.
So cute❤❤❤❤
AAAA IM SO EXCITED
Yo this is an amazing video - :)
What app do u use??? :) love ur vids
Amazing video 💖💖
I wish i could put one of those "yeah!" images rn
I love your videos but I am just curious, what program are you using for animation? I love animation and want to get into it and I have been practicing but all of the programs I have tried so far are really confusing and overwhelming and the one you are using here looks like it's really simple.
Is there a way to make the brush not look so low quality on procreate dreams? And is there a way to edit the brush stability like on og procreate?
6:52 wait I thought the swirls were the eyes and the dots were the eyebrows😭
😂😂I see it now
Hey Lavender Towne plz try toonsquid it’s the best I promise
Videos great! I'm just concerned that your usual thumbnailing method might not be as effective for this video, I mean I did not know that this video was about animation based on the thumbnail alone
LAVENDER UPLOAD!!!!!!!!!
WOAHH EARLY IVE FOLLOWED U SINCE 2021
How did you do frame by frame in Dreams? I tried but I couldn’t figure it out
What do you use for that.. from the tools in the top right it looks like Procreate but I don’t get it
IS THAT UNDERTALE MUSIC?!?!
Girl you really need to try out toonsquid
I love these advice videos. Could you recommend a good animation College/University to go to. I'm currently in my junior of highschool and don't know where to start. Really any help would be fantastic
The highly animated eyes on the motionless face look so weird, perhaps, it too needed some squash-n-stretch.
Person I find lip sync pretty easy because there are quite a lot of tutorials espesially if you save each mouth piece as a symbol you can reuse them and if your program can do tweening you can tween the mouth symbols into eachother
If you want a really good in deph blink tutorial I recommend Scribble Kibble's video she is someone who go me into animation
Also she did a really good tip where you draw two eyes closes one wich is fully down one wich isn't as down it helps ease out the animation better
Hi I’m sorry, how would you animate more serious kind of animations
ver gut
what do you animate on !!!
I made an entire music video of Coffee by Jack Stauber, and i made every mouth movement match the sound, i never thought of using my own mouth 😭
What animation software is this?
The pose one wouldn't work for me bc i want a smooth transition from one to another and not a POP from one to another
What program are you using?
What app do you use
What software is this?
I forgot procreate dreams exists.. if anyone has it, is it better than flipaclip, or is any other app really better than flipaclip? Because I’m just not really sure which app to use..
Procreate Dreams is alright but it’s honestly not a great animation app. If you want another app, I’d recommend ToonSquid instead.
But flipaclip is pretty great if you’re mainly making short frame-by-frame animations! So if you’re comfortable with that, there’s nothing wrong with continuing to use it.
Undertale background music in 2024 am I in heaven
Where doses she animate in
What do you use to animate?
I’m pretty sure that procreate dream
HWY DID MEGALOVANIA START PLAYING
My favorite way to lip sync is to have the general mouth movements but not 100% accurate. Like no in betweens ig
3:32 its a beautiful day outsi-
Personally I don’t like procreate dreams, I find it unintuitive, especially the timeline. But I can still understand why people like it.
I am so ignorant of what app this is-- it looks like an ios thing. I've been really close minded about using anything other than wacom, but I am tempted still by the oled screen and simple animation apps. I honestly wish that rebelle & rebelle IO would be fully supported on an ipad-- or at least clip studio paint EX. Regardless, just like your examples, there is a lot of fun & learning to be had from have from such a flawless smooth workflow-- but idk. I am still tempted to try out the movink, but I am so loyal to my old tools that I am even willing to learn how to properly solder motherboard components just to keep her alive & healthy-- but I cant expect her to do 16 core+ workloads on a 6 core system...its just not fair to her!
Anyways, back to the video, I am still learning how to properly animate my style of paintings. Mouth animations are going to be particularly fun for me since I have a couple of references in mind. Your shorts have been so funny Lavs! Both in context & in your way of animating your characters

Hey there lavender! Day 2 of asking you to redesign/rewrite the seven deadly sins anime characters bc they suck
Im a young artist aspiring to be an animator one day, and Ive been searching for a good but not too overly complicated app to animate, does anybody know the name of the one Lavenders using? Or any other apps you can reccomend? Btw, amazing tutorial, really gets to the bottom of it all and I will definitely be using these tips :D
310th like :D
Personally, I think most of this is an example of ease in and out. You add more frames at the beginning and the end of the animation wich will make the animation seem really smooth with little effort.
Yeah, it's working for fast animation
Animation major graduate here! Most animators are taught to do inbetweens with poses, but you can have multiple end points, so you wouldn’t just mark the starting and ending pose, you’d also mark the very middle pose. Then you do the inbetween frames. :) but the second method is also super cute!! I’d add like one transition frame in between poses just to make it a little more seamless, but that’s my own take:) both methods are good when you need them
Glad you made this when I get an animation homework
The "before" blink could still be useful for certain scenes - a slow, deliberate blink while she's processing something, say. You know, "Um--" s l o w blink "--what are you TALKING about?" Or to emphasize that a character is really zoned out - like another character asks, "What do you think?" and they blink like that.
Man, though, the "after" blink looks really cool.
I call that the cat blink, because cats blink slowly when they trust u. I like doing it to the street cats that let me give them scritches.
I did a small animation of a character blinking, but her eyes are droopy and she was supposed to look tired and dead inside, so it worked out great
I was thinking of when ppl do the frog blink with that animation method lmao
"Hey everybody! It's LavanderTowne" was said 9 times over the course of this video.
amazing advice as always!! also if you're looking for a character design video idea, you should do the 5 senses as people/monsters !!
I’m so doing this omg!
this idea would be so epic omagah 😱😱
@@LavenderTowne sorry for intruding. I don't know if you would read this but please, please, make a video analysing the toxic ml Sahed of the webtoon of Marionetta!! I suffer from PTSD and I find utterly disgusting how the author Miriam Bonastre has been washing genre based violence called now "flirting", just because the toxic guy is so hot!! He has been manipulating the fl, pushing to murdering, to commict crimes without explaining why, saying "this all for your best", intimidating her even stabbing her with a knife, and now Miriam has called all that behaviour "flirting". It is so hideous. He hasn't even apologised. People claim his behaviour was "for the greater good and the sake of his people", but tell me how this affect the freedom of his people?? It has nothing to do. Please, denounce the situation, it is so crazy. 🥲🥲🥲 Their fans even called me frigid for saying I don't like how the toxicity of his behaviour is ignored.
