    I flattened all 3 of my Spyderco stones. Medium, fine, and ultra fine. They were close to flat new. But not perfectly flat. I also will do a quick flattening with sic powder when they are so loaded that bar keepers friend won’t clean them. Makes them sharpen much better.

    To clean it i tried oil which is not to thick. Kind of mineral cleaning oil. Works amazing. Like new!👍

    Is that stone good for all steels? Japanese and so on?

    • @itsaknifestyle8482

      It should be good for everything. For steels that are very hard 63-64+ HRC I prefer using a diamond stone. Thanks

    Hi. Thanks for a great review.
    May I ask, would didn't you use the Medium grit, then transition to the fine and then to the ultra fine to show us the comprehensive benefits of using the full set?

  • @tariqkamil7853
    @tariqkamil7853 3 года назад +1

    It’s my fav stone. I kinda wrecked the first one I got using 300grit diamond to flatten it. After much research, using 80 grit grain to 120 to flatten and. 300 makes it too smooth and basically turns it almost to fine. So I got another medium and flattened one side using the first medium I had before and got the new medium flat maintaining the original grit.
    I need it super flat cos my leather knives are single(chisel) grind. Then I used my 400 atoma on the first medium to get a finer grit.
    Btw the fine and ultra fine 302 is the same composition just milled to different grit. So if u buy just the 302 fine and flatten using grain then let the grain break down while flattening on the last session, it will make the fine to extra fine.
    A bit confusing but I’m tired

    • @itsaknifestyle8482
      @itsaknifestyle8482  3 года назад

      Did you have to flatten it the first time because it needed it? I’m just curious because I wonder how long it will take till I need to flatten mine

    • @tariqkamil7853
      @tariqkamil7853 3 года назад +1

      @@itsaknifestyle8482 took forever the first time cos I used a 300 diamond plate. Would be much faster on float glass and silicon carbide powder grain at 80 grit but no more than 120 for the medium...can’t remember the channel name I watched it on RUclips. But u have to keep reloading the grain cos it breaks down rather fast. If u use sandpaper, the stone almost gets a polished finish...u don’t want that.
      Like I mentioned, I need my stone dead flat for my Japanese leather knives which are chisel grind. Then I got the 2nd medium stone and used the first to flatten. Work out great.
      As for the 302 fine, I used my atoma 400 for speed and finished it with the atoma 1200. Or use a course silicon carbide on one side of your 302uf to make it Fine. I actually prefer these Spyderco to my atoma 400/1200 for my folding knives and leather knives.
      As for method, I use windex while sharpening, stops it from clogging and actually carries the metal away.
      Also what I did was to cut the rubber non slip pad to fit the stone, so when I lubricate as I sharpen, it doesn’t collect in the case
      I like the fact it’s a clean system and I can sharpen in the middle of my leather work and not make a mess that could contaminate the leather stuff in making.

    You said you usually start on 600 grit diamond. Do you do that with every steel?
    What's your favorite steel to sharpen?

    • @itsaknifestyle8482
      @itsaknifestyle8482  3 года назад +1

      I will start on the 600 Grit stone when I will finish on a higher grit stone. One thing I found out about myself is that I do better when I am not changing stones three or four times a sharpening. If I was sharpening a knife that I would like to keep more toothy I would hit on the 320 and then a 600.
      I would say my favorite steels to sharpen are 154CM, D2 (at a good heat treat), and probably some of spydercos S30V. If I had to choose one it would be S30V. My sage deburrs in one stroke on the stone and I comes off super crispy. Thanks for watching👍

      You'd love Cruwear!
      In a lot of ways it's like a combo of s30v, D2 and 154cm. It sharpens a little easier than D2, takes that great fine edge that really good s30v takes and polishes like 154cm. It's also a pretty great user steel as well.
      I assume you always sharpen with the stone on a flat surface? Have you ever tried with the stone in-hand, like Michael Christy? It's definitely not for everyone and works better with some stones than others, but the feedback is pretty great.
      It's cool to see how far you've come with sharpening. I'm pretty sure you said you had never really even tried to seriously sharpen the first time I asked and now you're regularly posting 30 min full sharpening vids. Like the other guy said, the way you hold the knife and move it on the stone shows you've done a hell of a lot of sharpening!

    • @itsaknifestyle8482
      @itsaknifestyle8482  3 года назад +1

      Cruwear is definitely on the list of steels I want to try. I’m thinking’s about getting one of those Sharks made by Alex Steingraber, even though I’m not really into fixed blades, he grinds them so thin and he does a great heat treat.
      I have tried to sharpen like Michael Christy and it really hasn’t been as challenging as I thought it would be. I like how close I am to my stone to where I can easily see my angle. It is not my preference though, because I feel like there is variability with both my arms moving, and not just one arm.
      Sharpening has been something that has really made me learn more about my knives. After I learned to sharpen I understood heat treat, I appreciated thin grinds, and I’m not afraid of fatigued edges from the factory

    HELP. I got this stone, and i REALLY wanted to like it, but I CAN’T GET ALL THE MATERIAL OUT!!! i tried using green scotch brite pads and dish soap and scrubbed it for 15 minutes but i still see a bit of material in it, and its not as coarse as it was before now( which i assume happens because i used it, and that happens) Please respond!!!!

    • @itsaknifestyle8482

      My suggestion to you would be to pick up some bar keepers friend. I started using that a while ago, and it works better than the dish soap. The dish soap worked for me, but bar keepers friend seems a little stronger.
      Keep in mind that even if you might not be able to completely clean all of the material off, the stone is still fairly clean, and it should still work
      If you have any other questions let me know

      I have started to use window cleaner similar to Windex with the spyderco stones as it helps a lot with loadup. I did not have to clean the stones once since I started doing that. After I sharpen my knive I just take a paper towel and wipe off the windex with all the metal in it.
