Don't worry about a negative Nellies out there, the negative commenter prolly doesn't even have any bees. The universe will take you where you need to go. Positive energy breeds positive energy.
You do what YOU want to do. Don't take crap off of people online. Just block and roll!!! Selling bees is a great way to start. First off, you get a master class in bee husbandry which everything else depends on. Second, in New England, 5 frame overwintered nuts go for $200-250. 150-175 for nuts that have not been over wintered. So you can make a lot of capital quickly. Moving a lot of honey takes time to establish and like BB said, equipment intensive. .
Patience and timing is the game with bees. Everything takes two years.. and you're doing good. On the single second hive you watched.. when you see an empty frame as last and the frame next to it full of capped honey.. switch their places.. put the honey out and the empty in. The queen will go lay in it as soon as the bees clean it for eggs.. usually the next day. And those kind of doubles are great for comb drawing.. always use the top box for it and they will rarely draw drone comb. Patiently, don't put more than 2 at time. Mine are drawing two wax sheets in two days.. sometimes with eggs already in
You are doing good Jared just keep doing what your doing. Selling nuc's will give you a good cash flow and raising nuc's will give you resources to grow you bee business. Also dedicating a number of hives for honey production is a good idea and also think about selling queens too. Doing this will give you three cash flow streams. This is the same business model that I have used for the past ten years.
Don’t worry about what other people say. Stick to your plan and learn from your mistakes. Thats what I’m doing. I am focusing on honey myself and trying not to split too much. The difference for me is that I can get all the bees I want right now. Keep up the good work and keep your chin up.
Come on Jared, when you're starting out on a new business, you should always listen to anonymous commenters on the Internet, over some guy like Bob Binnie. I mean Bob only has 2000 colonies, in 7 states. He's got a bunch of full time employees, but anybody can do that. 😂😂😂😂 Bob is the man, as far as I'm concerned, and you're doing excellent. I hope when I get started, I can do as well as you are. Keep working those bees, and keep making these videos, you're helping guys like me.
I really like your system for raising and selling nuts. I have managed my bees along the lines of what you are doing. I think you are on a good path. Keep going and all the best for this year.
I am glad you are still posting videos. I am a little behind you with the same thinking. I overwintered 4 nice double deep hives, and I intend to turn those 4 into 20 overwintered into next year.
Good job Jared! I enjoy your well thought out videos.! I too have wanted to maybe start a channel because I just wanted to document my journey with bees … I don’t know what your motivation with posting videos is but don’t get discouraged by negative people! I know the world if full of know it alls and people that have to say negative stuff but don’t let that stuff get you down! I really admire what you’re doing! And you should be proud of what you have accomplished I live in a remove high desert of Nevada .. (6400’ elivation)4 hours from any Walmart or Home Depot in a small mining town.. of 3800 people I only know two other people that have bees it is a very tough place to try and keep them. But I find joy in watching others across the states keep bees as well … we all have different struggles
I have family that live in susanville CA which is probably pretty similar to you, and I can imagine that it’s difficult to keep there. You should I’d watch😁 I started my channel hoping it will help me sell nucs when I’m ready. Thanks for all your kind comments 👍
Ah the true beekeeper understands how many hives he needs to make the biggest bang for your buck with bees instead of honey keep rocking my dude your killing it man 👍🏻
Youve been a huge inspiration to me, i look forward to ea next video, bob Binnie and Kaymon also , but for some reason Kaymon dont do videos anymore. Im praying him and family ok. I hope you do another video on grafting, more detailed this time, bobs is fairly complicated, im gonna copy you if you show detailed steps your doing. Thanks again for taking time to make videos. I'll be praying for you.
Thanks Scott, you always have helpful comments. I actually have a part time beekeeping job coming this summer so I’ll be doing a ton of grafting! Thanks for praying brother.
@YoMommaTwo-fg6ry I personally think David Burns is tough to listen to (Personally) some people might get what he’s saying but I really struggle getting through his videos.. i was told when I got into bee keeping to learn from people that feed there families keeping bees .. And the people that you say are difficult to understand do just that … when I got into bees years ago I did not get 1 or 2 hives .. I was bless with 74 hives and I had to rely on those big names you mentioned because hobbiest methods would not work in my situation…. Just my two cents but the fellows you mentioned really saved my bacon
Hang the criticism, keep doing what you are doing. Ok so someone thinks you need to be making honey. You gotta have bees to make honey. Your approach is right to get more bees, whatever you use them for.
Stick to your plan man! I’m a small outfit but I still do nucs and honey. There is sooo much overhead in honey. Bottles, labels, ect. Time to pull boxes and extract. Filling bottles. All that vs taking 3 frames of bees out and let them do the work 🤷🏻♂️. I do 5 over 5 and once they have 6 or 7 frames of bees I sell a 5 frame nuc out of it leaving myself eggs and bees back in a 5 frame box to make another queen and the cycle continues. Point blank selling nucs is far more profitable than selling honey IF you have a market for your nucs. I haven’t had a problem yet selling mine, I actually hold on to some just in case I need to repopulate a struggling hive. Keep growing, keep learning! Praying for your success!
Thanks for sharing, local beekeepers can’t keep up with the demand for nucs, I hope there is a good market because A nice honey house with small Cowan extraction line is what I’m dreaming of for the future 😁
@@JaredBeekeeping I extracted 80 gallons last year. The old cut the capping off and 12 frame extractor into buckets method. Sweat equity until I can afford the big boy stuff lol
Hey Jared, I just wanted to say that your videos are great, and I really appreciate them! Wishin' you all the best and look forward to watching your apiary grow and flourish!
I'm ordering a pair fer sure, since I plan on living rest of my life wearing boots and they last lifetime.... that's another brainer. I'm in muddy Tennessee too , and my cheap boots leak. Thanks for code
Got my boots, their great, my size was correct with them . I've been hoping to find another slip on pair for a year now, just step in them and walk out. Great traction and very comfortable. Thank again for code.
Check out bobs double hives or Ians steplers the power of 6s or mike Palmers videos With those methods you can make a bunch of honey and make nucs to sell at the same time . These methods share the field bees and grow fast as the bottom bees keep the top hive warm . IMHO if you are worried about them getting too big before you get back to them put a brood chamber underneath to give room to expand and reduce swarming then when they start to fill the bottom box and may start to lay in it and the weather is nice reverse them.
Yes I do plan on doing both in the future but can’t get into honey big time until I have the building/equipment. I’m planning on making some honey this year.
You can use your extra hone to make splits . If you arent ready for honey producton split split split Sell if you have too many . Or exreact you honey put it barrels and store it . Its a lot of work but it becomes routine
You can make honey or make bees. If youre pulling brood from a strong colony to make more bees, they dont have the numbers to make a large honey crop. You can do one or the other. Dedicating a few colonies to producing honey is good. Just make sure you are building quality. Selecting good genetics for breeding stock is key. Thanks, I bet those have exploded by now. I got ten new queens from Blue Ridge Honey (Bob Bennie) last month and they filled those ten nucs in just about 5 weeks. I did have drawn comb. I sold one and when I went to put it in an EZ nuc I decided I needed to keep the rest for myself. They were just doing so, well. They are in 8 frame hives now. And, now, I'm adding honey supers. I usually run ten frames but, a few years back I thought 8 frames would be easier to work. Not for me! You're right about honey. It takes a lot of effort. I have a 12 frame motorized extractor and it's taken my wife and I a couple days work to get 10-10 frame mediums into 5 gallon buckets. You really, need to selll some of those nucs if you can, it's a LOT of work to expand too fast.
A strong colony can make a hundred pounds of honey. I've seen more but around a hundred is a good haul. You want to leave 40 pounds on them above their brood nest stores for winter.
Lucky I guess 🤷🏽♂️ I’ve got another small homesteading channel and the experience of making videos for that one probably helped this channel. Good luck on yours.

It is not the number of hives, but the number of bees in a hive, there Will give you honey. Selling hives is also an idea

can you show us how you built your hives? They look different
Lay the brood builder to them.

Where did you get your buckets and lids for feeding
I think it was U-line but the links to the buckets are in my video on feeding bees.
The tint plugs I got from paint buckets at work. Blue ridge honey company sells tint plugs as well
How many hives you got left after your splits?
What state are you located
Muddy Pond, Tennessee
How much comb honey is produced by a good colony in a season
