Thank you! I always learn so much from you and you think like I do (efficiency and saving money and helping the earth) so I greatly enjoy your channel and you're an excellent teacher without a bunch of over acting and silly jokes.
Timing of the video is spot on, i bought myself 3 sacks of dahlia clusters, 8 dahlias in each sack with discounts i only payed 2 dollars a sack, ill be planting my dahlias either tonight or tomorrow =]]
Have fun!! If they have more than one eye remember you can divide them, and look out for any signs of leafy gall (check out our other dahlia 101 video for images of what that looks like)!
I did check that video and it was really helpfull so thank you for making the 101 video. i spotted one cluster with the leafy gall and threw that one away in the trash. I managed to divide some clusters where tubes showed eyes on seperate tubers that could easily be removed from the main cluster, however in some cases this seemed close to near impossible since mutiple eyes grew in the center of the clusters were all the tuber meet eachother very risky to go cutting into that so i left them together for potentially more growth i assume? Still not sure how that part works for example if i have a cluster with 10 tubers and 4 eyes, those 4 eyes will all grow out to become dahlia plant right if they are attached to healthy tubers, and the other 6 tubers are basically doing nothing and become a source for rotting and diseases i assume? I did cut away all tubers that were either broken or showed signs of rotting.
Thank you for this lesson for the Dahlias. Although I had plants in my garden, I expanded it and transferred flowers and plants to one area. It is not as big as yours, but good sized. I am going to use the netting also for the Gladiolus and the maragokd flowers, since they then fall over. I only have 9 Dahlias in a 3x7 area and was going to use just posts, but as tall as those Dahlias got this year, those arch supports look like the way to go. Less chance of the heavy Dahlias plants pull posts inward. I was going to leave the Dahlias in the ground over the winter, but I am going to take them out and put them in bags with wood pump like you did. Plus I am goingvto put tge short ones in the front (north end) so they could not be overshadowed by the taller ones. One Dahlias plant ended up like a bush. Not sure where to plant that one.
Thanks so much for your fabulous tips and info in dahlia growing. I’m giving them a try this year in my small garden. Excited to continue learning about them on your channel
I have a tiny garden with dhalias sprinkled throughout. I don't have irrigation running. I have clay soil too. How often/ long do you run your irrigation (mild week, sunny,m but not scorching, and no rain)? How much water would that be per plant? Also, I have bindweed that wants to grow up the flowers. What to do? I have laid cloth and cardboard and it served as an easy place for them to run.? PS love your work and communication style, understanding the reason for doing things👍🏻
Great video as I watch the weather to get mine in the ground. You mentioned your forecast looked good. Can you share what you're looking for as far as weather outlook? Thanks
Dahlias tubers take at least 2 - 4 weeks before they Sprout 🌱!!! If you’re getting too much rain ☔️ like we are in Wisconsin Zone 5b; they might likely take much longer to Sprout !! The warmer soil, the faster they sprout💯!!
Hello! Just wanted to say I’m so happy to have find you! Your hard work shows with all those gorgeous flowers. In the past I successfully killed my dahlias. This time around I’m really hoping to have them happy and healthy in my garden. I’m still not sure how to separate them as I’ve got big clumps of them with few old stems. I’m in zone 8b with winter rain, snow, few storms and -15-20C. Do you think planting them 6” deep would help winterize them in the garden? Can’t wait to see more videos from you. Keep up the great work. New subscriber☺️
Love how much information you pack into your videos… I don’t know where you are located, but there’s no such thing as overwintering tubers- no matter how well they have been mulched -in Ontario! (which would be the same as your zone) so I will have to check out that video as well! Maybe because of your dense soil?
Its been nice here lately but does get down to 45 at night. Is it safe to plant our Dahlias yet? I have 75 that have pre-sprouted for us and we have not received our last frost yet. Thank you!
I just got in from a long day of planting. Lol, Dahlias we’re on the list! I grew from seed so I can stake yet as I didn’t know that. I’ve never grown them before. I hope they can handle heat as you mentioned shade cloth. I’m Z5a, WI, but it can get hot in our microclimate. I’m still healing my finger from pinching it between the handle and wood stake. I used my left hand and wasn’t stable and it was the last tap too-Ugh! It wasn’t good. Every time you tapped I thought why didn’t I use the end like you? My hands hurt bad enough and now I have a deep cut. We have several chances of rain, but they never know how much and I was trying to get as much planted as possible and we need rain bad for this sandy soil. Oh, I didn’t pinch them and the are about a foot. Is it too late? Well the IB kicked in so I can move to get in the shower😂
They can handle heat! I only use shade cloth when they’re young before the leaves have grown in to shade the roots. Sometimes our spring temps shoot up to 100 so I throw it on to avoid stressing them and decrease our water usage 🥰
Excellent video!. I often toured dahlia farm gardens and wondered how far apart to plant the tubers, about the staking, and if the skinny tubers would grow as well as the large tubers. I noticed in your videos that the side buds had not been pinch out like growers who show their dahlias do. Do you pinch off the side buds for bigger blooms? Thank you.
I don’t, just too many to bother with-lots of the show growers will do that but I’m a one woman show! So I leave them for the most part. :) peonies on the other hand I do disbud!
Hello! My Dahlia tubers came too early from the supplier, and they started sprouting in the plastic bags they came in. So i planted them in pots and put them outside but the temperature is still low. Should i bring them back inside even though i have no light in my attic? That is the only space i have to keep them inside...
The really interesting thing about dahlias is that is you grow them from seed is they never grow “true to type”, they might have some of the same characteristics but every seed grown dahlias is a “new variety”. So the only ways to know what dahlias you’re growing is by buying tubers of a specific variety, or saving last years seed grown dahlias. There’s a lot of really cool videos here on RUclips about seed vs tuber grown dahlias and dahlias breeding, I really like Floret Flower Farms videos, she explains everything really well, (and of course Blossom and Branch!). I hope that answered your question!
good callout to plan for support in the beginning! learned so much from this video :)
That jute netting looks glorious! Glad you’ve shared an eco friendly option like this!
Thank you! I always learn so much from you and you think like I do (efficiency and saving money and helping the earth) so I greatly enjoy your channel and you're an excellent teacher without a bunch of over acting and silly jokes.
Thank you so much, glad you are here! 🥰
You're not lazy, just working smart. Gardening is a full-time job that can get exhausting.
Thank you, planting on sides next year and snipping them to have more. Thanks for all tips on reducing water damageYou are such a good teacher.
Thanks for a wonderful video. I’m trying for some dahlias this year south of Denver, hoping I get some flowers this year!
Never thought to protect crops this way....great idea! Thank you for sharing your hoops, I live in COS and will meet you one day at a class!
Thank you-you know about the hail haha!

Planting mine this weekend. It's been warm but it's also been raining constantly for the past two weeks. I didn't want them to rot
Smart to wait!!
Where did you get your scissors from?
I love your videos, so helpful! I also love your outfit and boots! Will you share what they all are?? Thanks!
Thanks for this, I have so many dahlias this year, I just want to see one flower from each of them and I'll be happy!
You are AMAZING!, thanks, thanks, thanks for the easy to understand instructions.
Highly informative thank you for this video ❤❤
Such a helpful video!! Thank you so much! I feel well equipped to start my dahlia adventures:)

Yay next fall /winter i bet i can divide the dahlias up into SOOO many plants. Great to know

Hi ! I would love to start a small cut flower farm for myself and friends. May I ask how large your current farm is and how small you started with?
Good to know about jute support, thanks!
Very Helpful and interesting.
This was fantastic advise thank you so much xx
You are so welcome
Where did you get your boots from ? Can they be worn during the summer or do they get too hot ?

Watch our overwintering video! In your zone you want to focus on keeping them dry, so tarping!
@@Blossomandbranch Thank you for your recommendation. How did I miss that one 🤷🏻♀️ I watched it and I’ll try my very best to keep them dry😊 🫶🏻
So in sandy soil planting them up and down would be correct then?
Wow.. I thought I would die planting my 45 tubers this year...looking at yours I had a involuntary muscle spasm in my back 😂
Great video. Thank you.
What are you using for a medium to overwinter your tubers?

Laura from Garden Answer overwintered her dahlias and she's in Zone 5
Thank you!!!! 🤍

Can you please repeat you coco coir recipe for the cell blocker? Thx
Is there a link for the scissors?

I’m in zone 8 and I can attest they do very well in heat! I think they actually LOVE heat like tomatoes and peppers! 😃

Do you pinch your dahlias in zone 5?
2:55 explains how doing it that way u dont need to kneel, proceeds to kneel at 3:00 xd you do you boss, we're here to learn from the best
The jute will not break down when wet?? thank you for the great video
Not much. :) it gives a little but pulling it right before you attach helps a lot, and it’s much better than the plastic option IMO. ❤️
Jute will break down but she should get at least one season out of them.
I use jute a lot in my garden and I just try to keep an eye on it.
@@zaneymay thank you so much !!!

Do you store your tubers in baggies like this?
How did you afford such a big piece of land? That's the part I want to know!
Do you sell tubors?
What temperature are you looking for before planting them out? :D
Is this an Epic Dahlia battle?
I’m not with epic anymore 🥰😜
Hi do You sell tubers when you dig them up?
Only locally but look for a local flower farm!
@@Blossomandbranch Do you recommend any here in Denver metro area? Sorry missed my window with swan lake dahlias.
Did any of your dahlias that you left in the ground over the winter survive?
Yes!! Almost all! We have a full vid about it on the channel ❤️❤️
It’s difficult to find variety and availability in dahlia seeds.
🙏🏻
I leave the eye out and then I get flowers way faster.
Does a PVC pipe can bend that way or do you have to heat them?
If would’ve been nice if you showed how you attached the net
Why do you plant tubers instead of the seeds, I wonder. They grow so easily from seed! Oh, you just said to watch that video, lol. Ta!
99% of seed dahlias are not good cut flowers

The answer is she wants same variety of dahlias. Planting from seeds is another thing. They don’t look same 😅
