I’ve got a 50 odd year old wooden stick with a circular rubber plunger on the end that my dad passed on to me. It cost me nothing, yet has unblocked many a crapper after the wife has unloaded. Cheers pops.
Thanks, you just saved our Christmas! Tried for ages with pressure washer, rods, broom handles, came across your video, and unbocked the drain literally in thirty seconds. All the best!
True that. My friend just came yesterday and cleared mountains of shit from mine. I wouldn’t dare. He always says ‘where there’s muck there’s money’ and he’s not wrong.
I went out and bought a £4 mop taped a plastic bag over it with the original wrapper still over it. Two or three plunges and it worked like a dream. Paid around £80 for that last time. Thank you 🙏. Incidentally, I discovered the thank you option on RUclips that gave me the option to pay for this helpful information. Duly done.
If you can wait, crumbling a dishwasher tablet or two and leave overnight can do a good job. Soda too, but nasty stuff, and if overused will generate a lot of heat and create its own blockage.
@weekendwarrior3420 Be very wary of Sodium or Potassium Hydroxide pellets, flakes or whatever. It generates a lot of heat when added to water and can erupt violently. Wear goggles as it will damage your eyes permanently. Believe me, I'm a chemist.
@weekendwarrior3420soda crystals is NaOH. Dangerous stuff. Can blind, burn. When mixed with cold water it actually heats the water up. Highly corrosive. Safer to use Washing Machine powder. About 1 pint glass, half a litre. Put the powder straight on the blockage. Add hot water. Leave for a half an hour, or use a mixer, plunger, something similar. Always wear PPE including gloves, glasses, etc. You don't want splashes of this in your eyes, in your mouth, on your skin etc.
Absolute class tip, thanks Roger! The previous owner of my house had a penchant for pouring cooking fat down the drain by the back door, which solidified into fatbergs! This has caused me a couple of headaches as unfortunately whoever put the drains in didn't put any inspection hatches on this section, and there is a 90 degree bend to the nearest manhole, making it impossible to rod. After hours of trying to shift it using a (not very) high pressure kit, the "mop in a carrier bag" trick finally got things moving again, within seconds of me giving it some welly!
I had been battling with my drain on and off for days until i stumbled across your video. I tried your hack, and after a few minutes, all sorted! Thank you, and it only cost me a new mop! Instead of a plumber! Thank you very much appreciated
This has just worked a treat at my house !! Noticed the kitchen outside drain was blocked, wasn't sure how long this issue had been there as I have a black plastic drain cover. Before seeing this video I had my hand down in a rubber glove (that wasn't long enough 🤮) then caustic soda. Nothing worked and just resided to the fact after Christmas I was going to need to call someone. Saw this video, grabbed the mop, good old Next carrier bag sellotaped round it and pumped away. Blockage cleared in a few heavy pumps !! Thank you !!
Amazing 🤩 !!! Thank you so much Amigo I did the Job in less than five minutes Counting the time from the moment after the watch of Your Video … then telling my wife of nearly 50 years (who commented some negativity)… as usual … But… anyway , back to the Job… done in one minute I used an empty plastic bag that had sand from the Building Materials Yard I like to save them for the House general purpose… Garden and cleaning work Muchas Gracias Greetings from Perth in Western Australia 🇦🇺 Roberto’s BBQ Argentinian Catering Service
Funny I have a wife like that. No matter what I suggest she has to pour cold water on it and when it works............silence......maybe a shrug of the shoulders.
Just tried this myself. Worked like a treat. Had to improvise as didn't have a mop. Tied an old t-shirt in the handle end of a broom. Tied a bag round it and boom. Job done. Thank you for the pro advice Mr. Plumber man.
Lovely sunny Saturday afternoon…and then a back yard of putrid stinking drain water. Rushed to Screwfix to get a fancy gadget as back up but tried this bag(and old t-shirt for bulk) gaffer taped on £2 Poundland mop first and worked a treat, so many thanks 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Worked like a charm. Got some crap to drag out of the gulley but 10pm now, job for tomorrow. Other than that cleared the blockage in about 30 seconds. Legend, thanks. 👍🏻
You are a legend!!! My drain was blocked, and I tried everything to unblock it, hot water and rods nothing worked…. I tried this and 20 seconds later my drain was clear
Been annoyed with my blocked drain for a while, tried some tool... your simply great tip saved my day and our Xmas, thank you so much, YOU are a true Legend!!!
Had a rotten stinky blocked drain, this video came up on a google search. Just unblocked it about 5 mins ago. The mop will have to go in the bin but it worked perfectly! Thanks
The same can be done with toilet brush in a WC Roger, usually renders it unusable for obvious reasons. I've often thought a round drain rod rubber jerry rigged to a recip saw would work well but fear and the success of these methods have saved me. Cheers , Merry Christmas Roger.
Amazing, wouldn’t have thought of this and within two minutes I went from wondering how much this was going to cost me to hosing down my yard after a successful cleanup. Thanks!
Thanks for posting. The mop in a bag hack is a great idea, especially since my dog destroyed my two store bought plungers. I couldn't use it however, simply because my drain hole was too small. I was however able to clear it using a method that works for the toilet. A plastic curtain rail can be used as a sort of 'DIY Dyno rod'. With a bit of shoving and twisting I finally got through the food plug. For the toilet I just shape one end of the curtain rail into a kinda scope, just by bending it, and it can dislodge paper stuck in the U-bend.
Thanks so much for posting! I didn't have a mop, and nor did B&Q, so I took your plastic bag idea, shoved some waterproof rubbish in it (spare bits of pipe insulation foam I had) and manually shoved the bag up and down for a bit....hey presto!
Thank you so much for this video. I had a badly blocked kitchen drain that I did not know what to do with. As advised I covered my old bag with a plastic bag (2 to be strong), got plunging & lo and behold the drain cleared 😅😊
Just used this method and it worked, thanks so much. I didnt have a mop like this so I just scrunched up some bags into a bigger bag and duck taped to the mop. So pleased !
Thanks for uploading. I had given up as a mop wouldn’t work for me after multiple times, however it worked in the end - so you’ve saved me and others money!
On the few occasions when I've used a plunger I've found that suction with a quick upwards jerk can dislodge the blockage backwards and 'unwedge' it from the constriction. Great idea with the mop and bag though!
Amazing-effective yet simple. This video saved us thousands in drain blockage removal. Thank you for this amazing tool. We used PVC, cloth wrapped in plastic and nylon cord.
This worked! Thank you so much for the video! I tried once with rubber plunger but it didn’t work. Then I saw this video and I tried again. It worked this time! Don’t give up. May the hydrologic power be with you!
I spent more than an hour with my arm down the drain clearing out all sorts of foul-smelling debris, as far round the bend as I could reach, all to no avail. I really didn't think this was going to work, and the first 3 or 4 plunges were not encouraging, and then... woooosh!!! Brilliant! Thank you so much.
Thank you Roger. I noticed my drain overflowing today when the washing machine was on. I was originally trying to lift the circular concrete manhole lid - the one with the metal bar in the centre (if youve hacks on how to lift those please do a video 🙏). This mop and bag hack worked a treat though and i could hear an echo in the manhole which is nearby which in turn gave me confidence that things are clear enough in there too :) thank you so much.
Thank you so much, had to pump it down the drain and two overflow drains but my god the sound of the clog going away was so good, now to wash the smell out of my skin
"Keep plunging, don't stop" - This sound life advice needs to be on a T shirt with Rogers face and 2 crossed plungers like a skull 'n cross bones. On the back it's says "And remember to always use protection" with the bag and mop!
Thank you! We paid a medical-sounding drain company to unblock our drains. They said they’d done all they could and charged us £200. It was still blocked until i saw this video.
Can you use the same method if you are a wee bit constipated . Merry Christmas, Rog, for all the insightful and entertaining videos over the year, 🍻 mate .
Appreciate the vid but one thing I don't understand, if the u-bend is presumably there to stop solid bits (that could cause a blockage further along) from getting through, doesn't pushing it through there (as opposed to removing the solid waste) just risk the problem occurring further downstream, somewhere more inaccessible? Am I misunderstanding the purpose of the U-bend etc?
Or put your hand down and scoop it out like I do, elbow length rubber gloves recommended as yeah, it does stink terrible. As it's a bowl shaped trap down there swilling it out leaves most of it in so it'll block up quicker than it would if you completely cleared it.
Thanks so much for the video, we had some success with this, our pipe contained mainly dirt/soil. Now water will run down the pipe but it won't empty completely so backs up to a certain point in the pipe, it's running far better than it was but there must still be a small blockage and I think it's about a metre further on than the opening where there's a bend. We've tried to continue plunging but no improvement, any suggestions?
I'll give this try so cheers mate. If I call out British Gas under my home care which will be subcontracted under Dyno Rod, I will have to pay them £60 which is the excess on my policy.
I tell you what’s worse, a fat trap. In rural France where they have septic tanks you have to have a fat trap installed to catch the fat before it gets to the septic. I cleaned one of those out with a colander, rubber gloves, etc. Three washes in the dishwasher to get the colander clean of congealed fat and several days and showers before I stopped smelling awful
Even easier hack - if you ever have an old garden hose, retain a couple of metres before you chuck it away. Then push that through a blockage - it will make a hole through the blockage, and then liquid in the gulley will flow through and begin to clear the blockage. If its REALLY bad, connect it to the tap, and push through the blockage, THEN turn on the tap, and it clears from the back of the blockage in seconds. Doesnt risk wrecking a mop if the bag leaks, and has cleared some horrendous blockages for me.
I’ve got a 50 odd year old wooden stick with a circular rubber plunger on the end that my dad passed on to me. It cost me nothing, yet has unblocked many a crapper after the wife has unloaded. Cheers pops.

plunge on...taking appropriate precautions of course

I usually put down some soda crystals and some boiling water if the gulley is from a dishwasher or sink, helps clean out any fat. Love the mop idea.
If you can wait, crumbling a dishwasher tablet or two and leave overnight can do a good job. Soda too, but nasty stuff, and if overused will generate a lot of heat and create its own blockage.
