It was actually Nomura who was extremely hesitant about giving anyone reigns to his characters. So they might've even been able to go all the way with Disney references if they wanted to. IMO Re:Coded and 358/2 Days are kinda opposite in that way-Re:Coded has a basically meaningless story with great gameplay (though I'm biased towards command decks over pure magic, like in the mainline games) and 358/2 Days has a great story (the best in the series, in my opinion) but kinda lame gameplay. 358/2 Days does have other characters being playable in Mission Mode, though, which I always appreciated. To be fair it would probably feel like playing Persona 3 after playing Persona 4, Persona 3 was a great game but if you played Persona 4 first then Persona 3 is nearly unplayable with all the lacking QoL things added into Persona 4, playing those old handheld games after having played all the main line games would probably make them feel really clunky and chunky as a pose to playing them when they first came out so it wouldn't really be a fair representation and would probably score pretty low just due to being mechanically clunkier without the benefit of nostalgia to over look that chunkiness. It is a shame they didn't actually make them playable in the 1.5/2.5/2.8 remake collections I would have loved to play Re:Coded on the big screen but I am sure that they didn't port those 2 games because they would have had to do a lot of work to port a DS title to a device with only 1 screen and no touch screen. yeah I know they did it for DDD but that is probably because the bottom screen was pretty much only used for the Tamagotchi part of the game and so could be more easily ignored.
      Just found my ReCoded cartridge and I realized that I never actually got around to playing it despite buying it when it came out, I just had to many games to play at the time, I am going to have to boot that up and play now that I know where it is... I thought I had played it but nope after playing about 5 minutes it was just like "yeah I don't remember this type of FFX style leveling at all, I guess I never actually got around to it". (And yes I realize I say I am going to play it right after saying it will probably loose some value if played out of order, but at the same time I already own a physical copy of the game and didn't just go out and buy it so it is not like I am paying money to play it despite being out of order)

    0.2 was honestly so fun imo. All the challenges made for an engaging way to extend game length while also being rewarding because of the cosmetics. We all know how much people obsessed over Sora's crown in KH2. It had decent combat, a great secret boss fight, and some of the best level design we've seen in the franchise with the worlds full of puzzles and interactive environments. While the game was only 2-3 hours long, you could easily go up to 10 hours trying to complete and collect everything. I wish KH3 had more stuff like that in their worlds. I feel like they started off doing that in Olympus with things like the forge giving you a new shield for goofy and the golden Herc statues you could find but it dropped off pretty hard in favor of lucky emblems and photo missions.

      BBS is extremely unbalance and very slow to play, but it's story is more engaging and far less confusing than DDD, even tough I want to punch Terra in the face on pretty much every cutscene he is in.

    • @Kira1Lawliet
      @Kira1Lawliet 2 года назад +1

      I think BBS was a solid game, but by God the gameplay was clunky. You could tell it was Osaka team's first go at the franchise. I think there's a lot to enjoy about the game, but the way combat just flows is all wrong and awkward. Switching straight over from KH2, which is flawless, to BBS is like going from day to night. In terms of the games with real-time combat, I honestly think BBS might only be surpassed in how bad it is by 358/2 Days, but even then I think there's a debate to be had there. And porting BBS to the PS4 only made those flaws so much more glaring. I enjoyed DDD's gameplay and combat more, but the story was worse, the Dream Eaters were annoying, and everything about the vibe of the game just felt...off. But of course, nothing compares to the absolute atrocities that are the mobile games. Those barely even count as games at all anymore.

      @@scottbecker4367 remember, Terra, Aqua, and Ventus may have gone to the same worlds, but they didn't have the same experiences. They rarely even fought the bosses. Despite all three characters being in the same story, it's still different perspectives that better complete the story. Playing just one character in birth by sleep, wouldn't be enough to complete the story. Plus, Terra, Aqua, and Ventus play different enough to warrant playing through the game with all three characters.

      Eh, KH3 is garbage story-wise. KH2's story may start to confuse people, but it's still understandable. The introduction of Nobodies concept is easy to understand. The only confusion people have with the game is at the start, because it's very disconnected to KH1's ending and it requires playing Chain of Memories.
      "If a Heartless and a Nobody get destroyed, the person gets revived" what? No. That does not make sense at all. The Nobody must meet and join the purified Heartless for the person to be revived.

Surprisingly, Nomura was the one who was hesitant and was mostly responsible for our spikey haired hero's "neutered welcome" into the game as you put it. You're a respected member of the RUclips community and a lot of your viewers will take anything you say without a pinch of salt (including me most of the time), but it is understandable why you'd think it was Disney, especially after their cutthroat business practices and constant mistreatment of their popular IPs.

    I've played Union X before, and since this wasn't on the list, I'll give a few pointers that might go into the middle/lower middle part of the list
    -The game had decent graphics, though repeated animations across many attacks
    -Cutscenes had interesting lore, which really expanded (and driven the series off the rail and over a cliff into even more craziness)
    -The gameplay was decent, if simple, though not very engaging, it's pretty much swiping and tapping, with some strategy elements involved (and also brute forcing your way through the last encounters, the last 50 or so story missions for example were super brutal, especially against specific encounters)

  • @joshuaweston6531
    @joshuaweston6531 2 года назад +14

    05. Dream Drop Distance: For these next two entries, they are kinda polar opposites in what each of them does right. DDD has flowmotion. This makes both the combat and platforming feel better than it ever has in any KH game to this point, if not a little broken as well. I personally thoroughly enjoyed it's worlds, despite the smaller roster of them, with Symphony Of Sorcery being one of my favorites out of any KH game! The bosses were good, though I could have used a few less dream eater ones. That brings me to the dream eaters. I didn't grow up playing Pokemon. I grew up playing with Chao, but this is not quite like that. Sure, they're somewhat cute, but I really never could be bothered to care about this whole aspect of the game. Between this and the "drop system", this ended up becoming a chore once I needed to defeat Julius. Still, there's plenty I like about this game and all of these top five entries I consider to be very good games.
    04. Birth By Sleep: Ah, this game. I still think that between the visuals and sheer volume of content, that this game is very impressive for coming out on the PSP. Not the VITA mind you, the PSP! I think this game is easily on par with the numbered entries in the franchise. I love the multiple, interweaving campaigns. I like how absurdly powerful you can become if you work the command deck. I love the variety of worlds. I even like the Mario party board games! It also has an excellent array of secret bosses that are tough as nails and will cause you to curse consistently while engaging them! Yet, there are a few things that hold it back from a top three spot. One of these, is that it is in fact, a chore to complete. To level up all three characters and expand their deck to get all the skills you need is a daunting task, borderline intimidating! This is the longest KH game if you're looking to fully commit, simply based on having to do it three times! Get ready to sink a LOT of hours! This brings me to the other major reason which boils down to just how much of a grind it becomes, with lots of repetition. At the end of the day, however, I think BBS is a very rewarding game overall that gives you what you put into it. It's a marathon to be sure, but a full filling one!
    03. Kingdom Hearts: The original Kingdom Hearts is charming in it's simplicity, especially considering how complicated the series would become. This gives it a special quality amongst the other entries. However, as the first, it also doesn't have some of the quality of life additions that the follow ups have. Yet, I will always have fond memories of this game because it was mine and plenty of others, first dip into the series. The world's were good, though looking back there are a couple that are done better later. The bosses were fun. This initial entry also really pushed the Disney villains, which start to take a backseat to the Organization after this game. The array of secret bosses was excellent! It's just a solid game all around. Improvements have been made since, but if this was the only kH game that existed, I'd still consider it a must own!
    02. Kingdom Hearts 3: KH3 is bigger and prettier than any of it's former brethren, so why didn't it get the top spot on my list? Honestly, it almost could. I could easily flip these top three around. The sheer size of the world's in this game are incredible! Especially for Kingdom Hearts! It opens with a bang, with THE best version of Olympus in the series! No Hades fight though, unfortunately. Toy Box is awesome. Arendelle was surprisingly good! The Caribbean is a technical marvel, as you mentioned. Combat has been elevated to the point that you have so many options on how you want to destroy your enemies! They're absolute eye candy as well! Sora is fluid and agile. There's a perfect mix of his former abilities and flowmotion. Grand magic is devastating! In the end though, I think there are just a few things that might hold it back from the top spot. While I had no issues with it's pacing, things do go full anime towards the end and there's just a lot going on. It's a spectacle to behold, but there's just a lot of it. Actually, that's all I can think of and it's not even really a complaint. I guess I'll have to explain why this next entry does a few extra things to warrant the top spot!
    01. Kingdom Hearts 2: Kingdom Hearts 2 is great! It's story is still relatively simple by this point in the series. The pacing is spot on. I know not everyone loved the length of the Roxas opening section, but I did. So much dramatic build up! The World's are great. Twilight town, Olympus Coliseum, Pride Lands, The World That Never Was...etc. The bosses are an excellent mix of Disney and organization members. The drive forms make combat so much more interesting than in the first game and are genuinely fun to use and build up. The climax at the end is still probably the grandest in the series! Xemnas is also my favorite main villain, with xehanort right behind him. The Sephiroth fight was even more fun this time around! Then you have the additional content that gave us the data battles and the mysterious, Lingering Will. The Cavern Of Remembrance is still one of, if not my single favorite area in any KH game. It was just such a mystery...and the fact that I couldn't progress through it because I hadn't taken the time to upgrade my drive forms on my first playthrough had me itching to explore the place. That music is also amazing! Sets the tone and atmosphere perfectly! So yeah, these positions might move around with time, but for now, I'm putting kH2 at the number one spot!

There's like 4 hours of extremely plot centric content at the beginning surrounding Roxas then into Sora and it hard stops at Hollow Bastion. After this point its a Disney slog with about 8 hours of pure Disney filler to the highest extent, with the excuse of "Sora is looking for Riku and the organization" yet they don't get any closer other than seeing Xaldin for like 2 minutes and having an extremely small Demyx fight. Its just so much, even though I love the gameplay and its story, the pacing is inexcusable imo

      I love KH2 But it was wayy too easy safe for like a boss here and there. I also hate how you have to run through all the worlds AGAIN, it feels like square just went "Yeah we could have added more worlds or more content in those worlds. But instead, lets just make players go through them all, AGAIN." and the 2nd visits are noticeably shorter than the first. Like, you couldn't add this stuff into the first visit? The final boss(es) were very underwhelming as well, all of the phases safe for the last were ridiculously easy and even the final phase wasnt too bad, just more annoying than the rest. Also Furry sora, I never want to see that again.
      Though story wise, it's probably perfect. Its also the first RPG I've ever beaten, so it does have a small nostalgia factor to me

    0:23 actually, the gameplay makes 358/2 and Re:coded much more bearable IMO. When they put all that video and dense prose in one spot rather then here and their through a larger game it really made the whole thing get to be too much talking and reading. Broke the pacing really badly. It was already skirting the edge in Re:Coded case as a weird in between retelling game with some lore tacked on and then turning it into a book with cut scenes made it MUCH worse.
    However 358/2 falls apart the most in that format imo. Roxas's story in 358/2 really only works when you have the missions to actually DO. Just being told "and then Roxas killed some heartless" doesn't catch the feelings of the quotas your given and meet day after day, you really FEEL that OrgXIII is doing this big long project and your just a cog in it with those missions. And at the end of each day you wined down with that cut-scene, it makes you feel a bit like Roxas. Your just doing the job, and then coming to the clock and sharing and ice cream (cause it's DISNEY AND YOU CAN'T HAVE A BEER IN THE SAME PROPERTY AS MICKY NO MATTER HOW APPROPRIATE IT WOULD FEEL, also Roxas is like 15ish) with your work bud after a long day.
    It FEELS like you just got off your shift at the mall after school, and your 17yr old manager dude you got assigned to for training, who is super mature for someone who acts like he does is like "Hey, you. Want some icecream? You really busted your ass today, my treat" and your like "Sure. Thanks!" and it become something you do every day and you alternate who pays. It's where you sit around and BS. Then you start inviting this new girl in town, she's cool too. It just makes the whole thing feel mundane and grounded despite having the final fantasy DNA in it. It's cozy for a time. Then things start to go tits up, new girl gets sick and falls into a coma, Axel gets scouted by upper management and has to go to another store out of mall for bit cause they think he can keep that place together (spoiler he can't), but then she wakes up, but your connected somehow you don't know, and then YOU catch the werid and fall into a coma. and it's really just all down hill from there. That's what 358/2 FEELS like to play. The actual plot is a little different, but none of that feeling comes across in the summery/movie version.

    Side topic of a question: How did you feel about the traveling modes, aka: Gummi Ships?
    I have an arguement between KH 2 & 3 in my own opinion. KH2's Gummi Ship travel mode had "paths" that I enjoyed the gameplay of the most (except Mission 3 segments in some areas, but even those weren't bad) along with some unique parts for your ship, while 3 had been developed by the Einhander devs and added exploration and "dogfights" (well, battle encounters) with superior boss encounters I won't soon forget along with more weapons and new systems, yet KH1's may lack most of everything being the first has a one-off: The Transformation mode for ships which was never seen in any of the other games.

    I personally like 3 more than 2. Can’t really give a definitive why, just prefer the things it does better more and don’t mind the things it does worse.
    For example:
    I like the situation command system. While it is random, I think it’s a great way to combine all of Sora’s abilities into an easy to access system. I also like formchanges more than drives as they feel more varied and interesting.
    I don’t mind KH3’s mess of a story because I expected it from the get go. KH3 tried to tie together every game that came before it and while I can’t say it exactly succeeded, I felt it was good enough and for a Kingdom Hearts game, that’s high praise.
    I like KH3’s combat way more than 2. You have no idea how frustrating it was to play 3 first then go to 2. No airstep, no air guarding, worse graphics, drive form leveling. There were many times when I wished I was playing KH3 for one of these specific differences.
    I will give KH2 credit for one thing. That final world is COOL AS FUCK from start to finish. Completely blows 3’s out of the water with the spectacle.
    But to you people who think KH2 is the best in the series, I definitely see where you’re coming from. It was definitely fun to play and I probably sabotaged my own enjoyment of it by playing 3 first and getting used to its wildly different combat.
    Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

    For me it's hard to say overall.
    KH1 has the best exploration and progression system. New abilities actually impact how you navigate the world and open up new pathways in old areas. Arguably the best level design too. The story is simple but impactful, with stakes that are well established and very high. Similarly the Disney worlds are quite well integrated with the whole council of villains and the fact that completing a world actually directly accomplishes something by saving it from the Heartless. Even though the later games surpass it a little bit IMO, the soundtrack still slaps. KH1 does suffer from some technical limitations though. While the worlds are well-designed, the environments often feel confined. Similarly the combat is a bit clunkier than the rest, but still held up surprisingly well on a recent replay and I like the utility spells.
    KH2 has the best combat, which feels so fluid and is combined with some well thought out and memorable boss battles. A story with a lot of cool characters and impactful moments, from 1k heartless and 'two!?!' to 'right back at you, buddy'. The organisation was great even if I think Xemnas is one of the weaker characters among them. The soundtrack was the best in the series. Mostly original and absolutely slaps. Where KH2 struggled was in the world design. The worlds were pretty bland and all boiled down to hallways and clearings with minimal platforming or exploration. The best section in the game is the CoR, which was clearly added in FM to give a taste of what could have been.
    KH3 is the most beautiful to look at and probably my favourite one to just freeroam in through the beautiful Disney worlds, even if the original worlds (with the exception of Scala), are kinda bland or barebones. The movement was awesome and the combat was quite good. The writing and story was where KH3 fell short for me. The dialogue got bad and the story was in my opinion poorly paced and full of contrivances. The soundtrack was good but I would have appreciated some more new tracks as opposed to rearrangements of old ones.

    I find the card system really frustrating, but I have a ton of respect for Chain of Memories just due to how cool & delightfully creepy the story is. So unsettling to watch a 10 year old boy slip further and further into dementia, while being trapped within twisted false versions of the levels we loved from KH1. Org XIII was at its most mysterious and frightening, and the lore overall hadn't become so impossibly confusing yet, so you could still grasp what was happening if you paid enough attention. Quite possibly the best game on the GBA.

    I think Birth By Sleep kinda gets a bad rap. The story is super engaging and the fact that you can play as three different protagonists that go through different story events and have different fighting styles is really cool. Command melding is kind of annoying at first but once you start to understand and get the hang of it it's not terrible. The thing that really holds BBS back for me is the visuals. It really *looks* like a handheld game copy and pasted to a console, and I think if any game deserves a remake on the new console generations, it's that one.
    KH2 is kind of overrated for me. The Disney worlds feel like filler more so in 2 than in any other game except maybe DDD and the worlds themselves aren't interesting to traverse through in a physical sense.

    Question: What would you change if given the ability to alter the franchise however you pleased? For example at the end here you mention how KH should branch into crossovers with other video games, so how would that affect previous titles if you could retroactively include them?

    • @walter4180
      @walter4180 2 года назад

      Get Nomura to give his notes to a more competent writer probably and let that person handle the rest of the franchise.
      Also rip KH from the clutches of Disney a little bit for more creative liberties so a franchises characters can be more directly involved with the main gangs tribulations.
      Toy Story got away with it, but look at Arandelle for a reason as to why it's a pretty big problem atm.

    • @vadandrumist1670

      @@walter4180 I wouldn't be so quick to tear Disney away, simply because there's a chance they don't need to. I heard recently of a bill that would reduce corporation copyright down to the 56 years everyone else has, and that would mean most everything Disney created before 1967 would be fair game, including many of the titles and characters of KH1 and who knows how many potential options from other western animation. It could change Kingdom Hearts from Square+Disney to Square+Public Domain.

      Remove the time travel aspect of DDD. It made the story go off the rails when everyone became Xehanort (except Xigbar because he's only half Xehanort).

    KH3's far better than naysayers say it is, but let's just not forget that KH2 received just as nasty hatred when it first came out; It's the Disney tag. Some people just HATE Disney to hate them with no rhyme, or reason. Sure, all the power to them, but it doesn't change that KH is a well-made franchise (when it wants to be), and KH3's just the most spectacular example of how beautiful it can look. Mechanics-wise, though, that obviously will always go to KH2... Until a better game comes out, of course, which my pessimist doubts, but will continue to hope for.

    I must be weird, because I did play recoded and 300 days… in fact 300 was my first kh game ever, followed by bbs. So my personal ranking is very very different. Bbs will always rank quite high for me. You have to remember it first came out on psp… and they didn’t change a thing when they brought it to playstation.
    I actually genuinely loved the combat on bbs
    I liked the commands too. I cant fully get behind this review because kingdom hearts players have the weirdest opinions because of how long the series has been going, we all experienced games at different times in our childhood.

    The issue with what you said about Square Enix needing to be done with Disney is that Kingdom Hearts is owned by Disney. Sora, Kairi, Riku, they are all Disney characters, not Square Enix characters. Disney is the one who actually owns KH and it is copyrighted under their name, Square just makes the develops and publishes the games. Square only owns characters from existing Square Enix franchises, Cloud, Squall, Aerith etc.
    If Square was to add different videogame worlds, they would need Disney's explicit permission, and if they did distance themselves from Disney then Square Enix would need to make a completely different franchise altogether and abandon the current story that we have with Sora. Square cannot legally make any game that has characters from Kingdom Hearts (even original ones like Sora, Xion, Riku etc) without permission from Disney, even if you or I may want it to happen.
    It's why Disney was the one who was asked if Sora was allowed into Smash, not Square Enix. Disney. They own the franchise, they own all the characters except Square Enix original characters, so if we wanted to see all these cool things, it would mean either an entirely new franchise made purely by Square Enix or Disney would have to agree to everything. And we know Disney won't do that, it'll only be Disney and original worlds until KH is over as Disney would never let any other company into the game they own except the one developing it.

    nah man, you can't say that the combat in bbs is laggy and clunky and rank the og kh this high, that doesn't seem fair tho. I understand, og kingdom hearts was the start and it was a decent game but I'd rank ddd over og Kingdom hearts...and bbs over ddd

    I don't think there's many that wouldn't put KH2 or KH3 as their favorite. And tbh, I actually agree with this entire list.
    Also, I don't care what anyone says. Best worlds hands down was Re:Mind Scala and KH2 World that Never Was.

  • @carlosagp8430

    I personally don't think that KH must crossover with other games, the advantage of Disney worlds is that the gameplay time may be equal to the movies, doing that with another videogame that the story is about 5 hours long is complicated. What I think is that they must add more juice to final fantasy as they did in the first game. Letting sora use flare, última, holy, meteor and support magic could open even more the gameplay. That and adding more final fantasy characters and teaming up with them would refresh entirely the story, because they would actually think how to fit new characters in Disney worlds instead of replaying the movie just with the trio behind.

    "You're just a speedy wrecking ball out there zipping around unleashing hell on your opponents"
    My thoughts exactly and once you learn how to actually play the game so you can handle critical AND learn some cheese strats it's like you're spanking your *ss in Xehanort's face the entire game. Also, KH3 is my favorite because the increased combat variety (only needed on crit) from 2 makes it so much more fun. KH2 is a blast, but it feels extremely tight to the point of it feeling like a math problem as opposed to 3's more free form feel.

    I'd argue 358/2 Days would rank middle of the road on the list. The game is sorta repetitive, but the amount of playable characters is so astounding it even has Donald and Goofy. Each character also plays differently unlike BBS or DDD.

    bruh, you ranked Re:CoM too high
    but aside from how you like what's imo the worst KH game (Re:CoM) I do agree that it's time KH starts distancing itself from Disney, especially given the Unreality it seems to be heading towards, it'd be nice to see more Final Fantasy characters and even some Final Fantasy worlds, it'd be pretty cool to pal around with Vann in Ivalice, help Lightning save Gran Pulse, and maybe even team up with Barret and the others to look for Cloud and get the long awaited resolution to that little plot point

    I am actually doing the Zack versus Terra from Birth by Sleep fight on Critical right now. Zack just insta kills you with a BS attack that sends you into the air and constantly hits you. You just got to dash like crazy before he attacks you even if he is all the way across the stadium since he can teleport in front of you and end the fight instantly.

    • @walter4180
      @walter4180 2 года назад +2

      I have the opposite view lmao Growth abilities being tied to drive forms was one of the more egregious design choices they made for 2.
      You're practically required to grind just to have some form of satisfying movement in and out of combat and even when those requirements were nerfed in FM, it was still bad.
      Like Nomura really thought tying DODGE ROLL to a form was a good idea.
