The three puppies playing tug of war was PRICELESS and adorable. I miss my Moose being a little fluffball like these guys.
Getting a 9 week old next week. Your video taught me alot
I'm glad! Hopefully your breeder will be a good support for you! Please input your dog into Berner-Garde, the Bernese health database!
is momma at the back? momma wanted to be in the video too! and puppies running around? my heart melted❣️❣️❣️
I’ve enjoyed this video, thanks, Stacy!
I love watching your videos! You have great content and I want one of your puppies!!
This was really helpful, thank you so much! I wouldn't have thought of the supplements until it was too late
Thank you for the good advice!
My family and I are going to get a new dog in the summer and we're really considering a Berner! They're just gorgeous!
Please make sure you are patient and work with a reputable breeder who is breeding for health!
Hi Stacy
Really enjoyed your video with lots of important information on raising BMD' s!
I nearly lost my Belgium Sheepdog at 3 months old due to Parvo. The shelter I got him from didn't educate me on how contagious it is. I made the mistake of taking him outside our home at the local park across the street and believe he picked it up from old poop through sniffing it. He had maybe 2 shots already but hadn't completed the series yet. Thankfully he survived thanks to my veterinarian who took care of him in the hospital for a week. My point is puppies that haven't finished their series of Parvo vaccines can't go out beyond your home and backyard. They can pick it up just by smelling poop even poop that's been sitting on the ground for years. I know you know this. You never mentioned it in this video when you brought up socializing puppies. Thanks Again For Your Excellent Video! 🐕
I am sorry about your puppy. I socialize very carefully and only to friends yards who I know and places where other unknown dogs haven't been.
I just bought a mes amis lease. Love it!!
That's great!
Stacy,
What dry shampoo for BMD dogs would you recommend ? Or do think it's a waste of money? Thanks 🐕🐾❤ Beverly
Hi! Thanks for such an informative video! I was wondering where you get your joint supplement from e.g. fish oil green lipped muscle vitamin c and in what doses you give it to puppy vs 1 year etc etc
Hi Stacy! Thanks so much for all of your videos that you make- they have been so helpful to my husband and I as we have a Berner puppy coming in March. We are planning on getting a collar from Mes Amis before he arrives, but we are wanting to get a leather collar for when he is full-grown. Do you typically purchase a collar for when they are a puppy and then a collar for when they are full-size? Thanks!
You can do anything you want! I do recommend waiting to buy their adult collar until they are bigger so you know what size to get. For the Mes Amis collars I start with a size Medium on puppies and it is adjustable and works for at least a year!
Hi Stacy! My Berner is now 5.5 months old and seems to be hungry all the time. He is 51 lbs. He wants to eat anything in sight, including bark and leaves outside. He little bit on the slimmer side, especially in the rib cage area, so we aren't sure if we should be feeding him more. Do you recommend following the instructions on the puppy food bag? We don't want him to gain weight too fast but also we don't want him to be too hungry!
Have you talked with your breeder? They should be able to recommend what/how much to feed based on what littermates are eating. At five months they do go through a growth spurt and need more food, you have to feel your dog and adjust.
Hi Stacy, thank you for such informed video! Can you refer me to some reputable BMD breeders in Washington or Oregon? Thank you so much!
Yes! Please visit the BMDCGS.org and BMDCO.org for their list of reputable breeders!
Stacy. The link for the slip leashes didn’t work. Do you have an alternative suggestion. We’re using a slip leash now is there a difference. Thanks again.
Stacy, at what point do you know they need the nails trimmed? My BMD is 16 weeks and I haven't trimmed his yet because they're just now showing from under his fur.
C. Byer With puppies I clip them each week, just taking off the tip. I want them very used to nail trimming and the only way to do that is to do it often.
Hello Stacy , do you have any video on food . And what should be their diet schedule including treats .I searched but cudnt find one .plus does the potty training video includes night training too
I don't have a video on food. I am working on it. :) The crate training video discusses the night routine.
New to your channel. Thank you for the informative videos.
I found you while researching reputable breeders for Bernes. We are seeking a puppy for our family to adopt to come live on our small farm in Moscow, Idaho. Do you know of any reputable breeders in eastern Washington or northern Idaho? I could easily come to Seattle as well, if any of your puppies are not spoken for. :)
I am happy to refer you to reputable breeders near you to purchase a puppy from. Please feel free to email me at stacyslade77@gmail.com.
Hi Stacy!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience of BMD.
I wonder what treats you recommend and what type and size of bones or other that are suitable for a adult BMD that are a strong chewer?
I use string cheese, jerky treats (made in the USA), Stewarts dried liver and Mother Hubbards biscuits. For strong chewers I suggest antlers or horns along with raw meaty bones.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade Thank you!
@@SitStaywithStacySlade ok
Hi Stacy do you use the .5 or.75 inch width Mes Amis collar. I am getting my BMD puppy in 4 weeks .I took you advice found and waited for a breeder to have a litter
Thanks for the good advice!!!
Chris Mikulski Thats awesome!!! I like the .75 inch best.
Yes! Was wondering this and also wondering if getting the medium size is typical for an 8 week old Berner?
Thank you for all this wonderful information. What brand of crate do you recommend? And you say 42 is big enogh?
Yes most all my dogs fit in a 42" wire. However if you have a very large male, they may need a "46.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade any certain brand you prefer ?
@@sherryconley8226 I usually get MidWest crates.
They’re adorable! Do all the puppies have homes?
Thanks, yes they do.
Hi Stacy, is a 42 inch crate the size I need for a BMD?
Yes, that works for most Berners.
Hi Stacy! What height exercise pen do you recommend for Bernese puppies?
I like a 2 foot pen, but you do have to teach them not to jump on it and to sit :)
what size collar do you recommend for a 8 week old puppy? I am ordering a Mes Amis for our puppy we're bringing home this summer.
I start with a medium adjusted to the smallest it can go and that lasts for about 9 months. :) I also love the combo lead for easy in and out trips to potty.
What size buckle color/limited slip do you recommend for an eight week old puppy? I saw you said .75 for the width but what about the neck size?
For a Berner puppy I get the Medium so they can grow into it.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade thank you!
Stacy, what are your thoughts on a breeder wanting a 50% non refundable deposit just to be added to the waitlist? I normally would think this is a red flag but it’s for a more rare breed and well respected and active breeder in the breeds community. The waitlist is also really long. Thoughts?
That sounds incredibly exploitative, asking for a *non-refundable* deposit. Presumably a rare breed will have plenty of interest, so you'd assume all puppies will be quickly spoken for even if one or two people pull out. Sounds like they're just trying to cash in on the desperation of prospective owners.
What breed? In Bernese, I wouldn't put a deposit more than a few hundred and only if there are puppies on the ground. What if something unforseen happens in your life or family that you can't get a dog? I would research other breeders and make a decision you can walk away from if life changes for you.
Hi Stacy!!! we want to buy a beautiful bernes where we ca buy one thanks
Please watch my "How to buy a Bernese Mountain Dog video". :)
Hi Stacy, this is Wayne's girl. Want to ask about bones...my vet made me feel very guilty telling me that the bones were harder than my puppies teeth and could be harmful to them. Was it a particular bone that is not advisable? I always bought soup stock bones.
Any item a dog chew does need to be supervised. Teeth are of the same material as bone, calcium. In the wild meat and tendons are what wolves eat. Bones are very healthy and an essential part of a dog's diet, they keep teeth clean, the jaw strong, provide mental stimulation, and valuable nutrition. I don't recommend marrow bones or many cooked bones, just the knuckle bones and raw knuckle bones. I have never had to do a dental on my dogs because they eat bones.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade thank you for the info! It was definitely marrow bones that I was giving. Good to understand the difference! Thank you so much.
Hi Stacy,
Just a quick question: What type of dog food do you prefer or recommend for a 8-9 week old Bernese puppy? Is it ok to give him (puppy) some raw patty (1.5 patties total) in addition to the all natural kibble?
I would feed a large breed puppy kibble for a few months and then transition to adult quality kibble. You would need to know how many calories you are feeding when mixing food, but yes, you can mix raw, but there are others who are more knowledgable about nutrition than I am.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade Stacy, not asking you to promote any brand, but do you have a couple large breed foods that you feed or like for say the first year or so? How do you feel about corn in the food? I am finding that my Berners do much better on a food WITH grain in them. I have been giving our 9mo Berner Rollo half an 8oz raw patty (Answers or Dr. B blends) with 1 cup of large breed kibble for breakfast and dinner and then a little shredded meat canned & kibble at lunch. I'm looking to eliminate the lunch feeding here soon. I am learning and looking to go to raw feeding for one meal and kibble for the 2nd going forward. Properly balanced, it seems the nutrient absorption from raw feeding is 1000 times better than kibble with who knows what's really in it and sits on a shelf for months. I found expensive isn't always the best!
@@SitStaywithStacySlade Sorry Stacy! I see the Purina Pro Plan further down in the comments. Any other brands you feel are worthy?
@@christinec.3817 I like NutriSource, Pet's First, Acana (if not too much protein), Fromm, Diamond and Avoderm.
@@christinec.3817 As for quality kibble I do research many different websites and watch for recall lists, on the top of my list is Purina Pro Plan, Pet's First, NutriSource Diamond Naturals, Fromm, Acana, and Wellness Brand. I avoid corn but don't have a problem with grain in kibble. As for raw, they aren't all equal and I went with a local butcher who made a veggie/meat mix and sourced locally. In a pinch I would buy dehydrated for when I traveled. Definitely read books on the subject, Kymythy Schultz's book is very good. Raw is a better diet for most dogs.
Hi Stacy! You mentioned that you use a probiotic, green lip muscle, vitamin c, and fish oil supplements for your dogs. I am getting a 9 week old puppy this weekend, and wanted to know when we should start these supplements, and if you use a multivitamin that contains all of these vitamins or if you give them separate pills each day? Also, should I only be giving him pumpkin and plain yogurt if his stomach is upset? Thanks so much!
Hi Elli, I would talk with your breeder about what supplements and diet your puppy is currently on and what they recommend. I do give a little pumpkin and a probiotic at 8 weeks. I start Glycoflex Classic, fish oil and vitamin C at about 4 months old. It is important to get quality supplements of each, I don't know of any quality multi-vitamin for dogs.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade Thanks Stacy, this is helpful. My husband and I have watched almost all of your videos, but I can't remember if you have covered pet insurance? Do you recommend getting pet insurance for puppies?
@@ellikloewer7459 I haven't covered it because it varies so greatly by area and personal preference. I do recommend insurance for at least the first year and then after five years old. Purely from my own experience.
This video is really helpful! In 3 days (What feels like long days) I am picking up my Bernese Mountain Puppy. This will be about a 3 hour car ride for her. Do you have any suggestion. Also in October we will be taking a 12 hour car trip. (meeting the family) Along with being in a new place for a week then back on the 12 hour car trip. Any advise, tips or suggestion?
If the breeder can familiarize her with a crate in the next 3 days that is ideal. I would have a Red Barn White Knuckle Bone and other toys for chewing. Stopping every couple hours for run around time and to potty is important. Make sure the car is cold for the puppy.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade Thank you so much!
YES. Be prepared to run that air conditioner. That puppy hair keeps them really warm.
Uuuuggghhh! I know this would be so hard, but I would not do two 12 hour trips with a new puppy. I'm sure puppies have survived long trips or transports to new homes, but I would think it might be stressful both on the new baby and you guys traveling. Accidents in the car??? Diarrhea? Just to name one. What if they don't travel well and are throwing up? Are you going to turn around half way? If you have a friend or family member or even the breeder, can they keep the new baby while you are away? Of course you want to share the new baby with family, but it's awful early to do that kind of trip with such a young pup, not to mention they haven't had all their vaccinations yet. Sorry, just my two cents ;-) Gook luck, and enjoy your new baby, there is nothing like a Berner pup!
@@christinec.3817 I just had a puppy do fantastic on a 3 day drive to it's new home. Way less stressful than flying and they took great precautions for keeping the baby from popular pee areas. If the breeder works on the crate with the puppy before hand it really can be easy for the puppy. Of course it depends on the puppy. But most puppies have to get home some how and I would rather them go at 8 weeks than 10 or 12 weeks and miss the early socialization window. It can be done well with thought and preparation.
What would be the best collar size to get??
For an 8 week old puppy I start with a medium cinched tight and lengthen it as the puppy grows.
Can you please recommend the best bully stick for puppy chewers
I love the bag at Costco, or Estes Paw has good ones too.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade thank you so much 🥰
Do you leave the limited slip collar on them inside?
No not generally. My dogs don’t wear collars unless leaving the house.
🌺✳️🌺✳️🌺✳️
How do you feel about the raw dood diets and which food brand do you feed your dogs?
I think a correctly fed raw food diet is great for dogs, can transform them! I feed Purina Pro Plan for a few reasons. I look for a food that is low in protein and a calcium/phosphorus ratio of 1:1.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade Thank you so much, one more question if you don't mind...the knuckle bones are ok to give to 8 week old pups supervised??? The manufacturer recommends 1 year and up. I just want to make sure I heard you correctly. We are bringing home our fifth Bernese on October 3, first two were puppies 15 years ago, last two were 3 year old rescues so its been a while since we had the puppy experience. I am getting ready for baby shark and stubborn attention deficit!
@@catherinemiller6682 I use them with my puppies. As with all things for dogs to chew they should be supervised.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade Thank you for your time and your guidance, so very much appreciated!
@@catherinemiller6682 You're welcome!
Hi again, Stacy! Can my 9 week old puppy have red barn white knuckle bones? I wasn’t sure if those are too hard for his puppy teeth.
Some love them at this age!! I also give raw bones, and bully sticks. All with supervision :)
They say how are you supposed to socialize your puppy with this covid-19 going on?
I have a few videos on this, here is one: ruclips.net/video/s6qqfOMC48c/видео.html
