The person you knife either tries countering too early pressing their knife button too quickly before the counter prompt shows up or they don't press anything at all and allow you to knife them. There's no trick, it's completely up to the person you're knifing. They either try countering too early or don't do it at all, either way that's the animation for front knife attacks.

@@markfromthefuture477 tested and proved it myself. Every time I wait for the prompt to show up before trying to counter, I counter them every time. They don't punch me. And every time I spammed my knife button before the prompt shows up, they punch me immediately.
