I live in Houston, Texas, USA. It is one of the very few cities in the US where I can travel to Kolkata with just one stop. We have non-stop flights from Houston to Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi by Emirates, Qatar and Etihad airlines. Then onto Kolkata non-stop. The time of travel by Emirates and Etihad is a little dicey because the layovers at Dubai and Abu Dhabi are somewhat long. But I can fly from George Bush Intercontinental airport in Houston to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International airport in Kolkata in mere 23 hours. Nice. Incidentally Houston has two commercial airports, both international airports and a number of commuter airports.
The reason why carriers don't operate direct flights to European destinations is the lack of industries and business class load from Kolkata. It's not due to the relative western position of Mumbai or Bangalore or New Delhi. Then why does Qantas operate flights from New Delhi and not Kolkata? There were quite a few direct European connections from Kolkata, London (AI/ BA) Frankfurt (Lufthansa), all were withdrawn, until recently AI restarted CCU - LHR 1x weekly.

Kolkata being further east is not the reason for the western airlines from Europe or North America not flying directly to Kolkata. The decision to fly to a destination or withdraw flights are pre-dominantly commercial unless there is an embargo over a particular route especially over a war zone. EK and QR flies multiple times into Mumbai and Delhi not because they are in the west, but because they provide financial viability through better load factor. These gulf carriers fly multiple times into multiple destinations of a small state like Kerala, reason being there is a huge inbound and outbound traffic into various Middle East destinations from Trivandrum, Cochin and Kozhikode. Similarly though Kolkata is closer to Singapore, still SQ has more flights to Mumbai per week than Kolkata. Finally its business that takes the call.
In my opinion, Airline companies usually make primary profit out of business class. But due to lack of business class passengers in Kolkata to Europe and US route, they do not provide service in this route by reliance on economy class.

A good attempt. But, would like to point out one omission. The Thai Airways, is surprisingly missing though, it used to operate a direct daily flight to Bangkok, until the first lockdown. This flight was operational, for the last 30 years, ATLEAST. Have personally flown to BKK & beyond with the Thai, from 1997 to 2020, NUMEROUS TIMES. Also there was a direct flight to & from Chittagong, Bangladesh, till February, 2020, operated by the REGENT AIRWAYS.
Thai Airways is in deep financial trouble. They have reduced their flight, eliminating the routes where there had been less than expected regular revenue. An empty business class reduces revenue substantially that cannot be made up by an economy class cabin filled with discounted price ticket holders.

I beg to grossly differ from your deliberations, why Kolkata does not have direct flights to Europe and America. Your very opening statement was ofcourse the reason that most of the airlines have closed down their operations from CCU. I remember, it may be mid nineties when Lufthansa used to operate a direct flight between CCU to MUC, which too later was withdrawn. Meanwhile political instability continued since 1970 to 2011 and after that situations have further worsened in last 10 years. The state does not have any business interest that it can offer to the international community. The airline companies need big infrastructures and financial investments to make a hub, however if there is no scope to get a return then why should people be interested? This anti-industrialization & anti-business environments have virtually helped international airline operations from Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad to grow rapidly in last 10-15 years. I fear if the current scenario continues for some more time in the state, countries may start winding up their consular services too from Kolkata. So requesting you to let your subscribers know the actual reasons and not the concocted stories. Code sharing with domestic airlines to ferry international passengers from CCU to New Delhi/Bombay/Bengaluru in order to connect them to flights to Europe & America work out to be cheaper than operating their own aircrafts. And this is not because of geographical positioning of Kolkata but because of inadequate passenger volume.
exactly right, location in west is a bogus logic, places which are more eastern than Kolkata have direct flights to EU destinations like Rangoon, not very far from now the Guwahati Inl airport will have flights direct to all major west and middle eastern locations once the expansion is complete, then Kolkata's importance as regional hub will also be diminished. Also compare the flight Emirate operates from CCU to DXB and DXB to say Delhi, they run a very old plane on this route cuz they know no one will complain

A good attempt. But, would like to point out one omission. The Thai Airways, is surprisingly missing though, it used to operate a direct daily flight to Bangkok, until the first lockdown. This flight was operational, for the last 30 years, ATLEAST. Have personally flown to BKK & beyond with the Thai, from 1997 to 2020, NUMEROUS TIMES. Also there was a direct flight to & from Chittagong, Bangladesh, till February, 2020, operated by the REGENT AIRWAYS.
These are all suspended cause, air bubble is active. Sab country khule gele things would be different.
Thai Airways is in deep financial trouble. They have reduced their flight, eliminating the routes where there had been less than expected regular revenue. An empty business class reduces revenue substantially that cannot be made up by an economy class cabin filled with discounted price ticket holders.

I beg to grossly differ from your deliberations, why Kolkata does not have direct flights to Europe and America.
Your very opening statement was ofcourse the reason that most of the airlines have closed down their operations from CCU. I remember, it may be mid nineties when Lufthansa used to operate a direct flight between CCU to MUC, which too later was withdrawn. Meanwhile political instability continued since 1970 to 2011 and after that situations have further worsened in last 10 years. The state does not have any business interest that it can offer to the international community. The airline companies need big infrastructures and financial investments to make a hub, however if there is no scope to get a return then why should people be interested? This anti-industrialization & anti-business environments have virtually helped international airline operations from Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad to grow rapidly in last 10-15 years. I fear if the current scenario continues for some more time in the state, countries may start winding up their consular services too from Kolkata.
So requesting you to let your subscribers know the actual reasons and not the concocted stories. Code sharing with domestic airlines to ferry international passengers from CCU to New Delhi/Bombay/Bengaluru in order to connect them to flights to Europe & America work out to be cheaper than operating their own aircrafts. And this is not because of geographical positioning of Kolkata but because of inadequate passenger volume.
exactly right, location in west is a bogus logic, places which are more eastern than Kolkata have direct flights to EU destinations like Rangoon, not very far from now the Guwahati Inl airport will have flights direct to all major west and middle eastern locations once the expansion is complete, then Kolkata's importance as regional hub will also be diminished. Root cause is creation of wealth unless we build credible business and industrial environment it does not make sense for any airlines to operate direct flights for say about 2 Lakh Bengalis living in EU or US who comes once in 3 years during Pujas. No market demand. Forget about Blore BA has a daily flight to Hyderabad direct, not using their hub in Delhi bcoz they get huge traffic there. When I fly it's pain to wait 4/5 hours either in Dubai or Abu Dhabi or with in India Mumbai or Delhi or blore for a connecting flight. Also compare the flight Emirate operates from CCU to DXB and DXB to say Delhi, they run a very old plane on this route cuz they know no one will complain
