Players always get an improved contract when their performances far outpace their wage level. He would’ve been on pretty small potatoes last season and considering he had one of the great debut seasons, it would be strange for Chelsea to not improve his wages - why would they do that and not at the same time improve their position re:the length of contract? Not improving his wages would send a terrible signal that the club doesn’t value performance and the terms their on will remain their terms no matter how well they perform and not extending would mean the club gets no benefit in return for the improved wages.
