Written by John Conolly in 1966, the song lyrics eloquently articulate the yearning of a seasoned mariner for the mythical sanctuary of Fiddler's Green, a maritime utopia reserved for seafarers of virtuous resolve. Through vivid imagery and poignant verse, the protagonist wistfully extols the allure of this ethereal realm, where the tempests of earthly existence are quelled by tranquil seas and benevolent weather. Symbolizing a departure from the toils of mortal life, the refrain "Wrap me up in the oilskins and blankets" evokes a profound readiness for this next adventure. Fiddler's Green emerges as a paradisiacal refuge, replete with the promise of camaraderie, libation, and rolling seas. Embracing a romanticized vision of the seafaring life, the verses reflect a yearning for the sublime simplicity of a sailor's existence, characterized by the harmonious interplay of wind, sea, and melody, and a rejection of the more common tropes of heavenly ascension, a harp and a halo. Ultimately, the lyrical composition transcends mere storytelling, offering a poignant meditation on mortality, longing, and the enduring allure of the sea.
Lyrics:
As I walked by the dockside
One evenin' so fair
To view the still waters
And taste the salt air
I heard an old fisherman singing this song:
"Oh, take me away boys, me time is not long
Wrap me up in the oilskins and blankets
No more at the docks I'll be seen
Just tell me old shipmates
I'm taking a trip, mates
And I'll see you someday
In Fiddler's Green"
Now Fiddler's Green is a
Place I've heard tell
Where fisherman go if they don't go to hell
Where the weather is fair and
The dolphins do play
And the cold coast of Greenland is far
Far away
And when you're in dock and
The long trip is through
There's pubs and there's clubs
And there's lassies there, too
The girls are all pretty and
The beer is all free
And there's bottles of rum
Growing on every tree
"Wrap me up in the oilskins and blankets
No more on the docks I'll be seen
Just tell me old shipmates
I'm taking a trip, mates
And I'll see you someday
In Fiddler's Green"
And no I don't want a harp or a halo, not me
Just give me a breeze and a good rolling sea
And I'll play me old squeezebox
As we sail along
With the wind in the rigging
To sing me this song
"Wrap me up in the oilskins and blankets
No more at the docks I'll be seen
Just tell me old shipmates
I'm taking a trip, mates
And I'll see you someday
In Fiddler's Green"

The place where only Cavalrymen dismount?
What a beautiful voice you have, and what a gorgeous song. Sweet, playful and touching all at once. Thank you. ❤

I saw my RUclips notification when I got up this morning…. Immediately grabbed my earbuds and listened.

Great to see another song, amazing as always.
If you ever wish (or have) done "Uncle Nobby's Steamboat", I'll meet yer in Tir na' Og
A creative artist, greetings to you from Palestine 🇵🇸
Greetings!
@@sethstatonwatkinsI have suggestion for an Irish song! It’s called: Bold Black and Tan also to my knowledge there’s like 4 videos of this song on RUclips it’s kinda close to lost media at this point there’s even barely even websites that have it to and I’ve heard that there’s only 1 physical copy of it as well so if you do it I’ll be very happy!
Sir ur voice pierces my heart
And the song oh palestine oh palestine made me cry I listen that song everyday
He almost sounds like a tenorino. His passaggio primo and passaggio secundo are almost indistinguishable from his chest voice and I'm a lyric tenor who has a very hard time keeping up with his singing if I'm not standing still
Another great cover. Please cover Saint Therese by the Stillwater Hobos. Thanks
Outstanding job Seth!!!
Good morning. Would you allow me to publish one of your songs about Palestine on Facebook?❤
The voice. The cadence. What a beautiful version! I wish you corraled more of the lyrics though. And I prefer when the story says "me oilskins and jumper". It's more specific, more personal. It emphasizes the simple, no-fuss nature of the man bidding farewell to his mates.
I'd LOVE to hear Connolly's 2004 version (Ranter's Wharf) in your voice. Cheers!
Well done!
For everyone for whom this song has evoked memories of loss (so many people on TT), new or ongoing, a slightly modified* line from my novel (I wrote this)-
“NOTHING is so lost that it cannot be found again-“ *not you, nor [your lost], nor their love for you*…
So if you’re here remembering your lost loves and their passing, know that they can be found again; our late come to us in so so many ways over the course of our lives beyond them… in a song, a feeling, a moment of low; in anything… just try to listen-they’re still here with you, hugging you, loving you, carrying you through; they’re here watching over you and they surely are so proud that you’ve continued on while they cannot.
Just know that they’re not lost; you will meet again someday… there is no grudge beyond, and no regrets; only peace and joy and overwhelming love💜💜💜💚💚💚 your loved ones can be found again, just listen and you’ll find them in a different form…
It’s also “no insult to them, nor to [their] memory, if you can learn live again someday…”
But please don’t rush your grief. One day, “you and your grief will learn to coexist”
But for now, take it easy, and just know that someone cares💚💚💚 all the love from an internet friend
Is there any way I could buy a CD?
Longtime fan. Not sure how this is usually done by RUclips artists.
Free Palestine. Free North Ireland.
Great job although I do have a question when I first saw this video uploaded and I saw the name of the song I could have sworn that there's a song of the same name Fiddler's Green that is often associated with Calvary units to this day at least in the US military anyway if anybody else knows what I'm talking about let me know I don't know if I'm Mandela affected myself
10/10 made me forget about my current year
I’m sorry you’re having a rough year😢😢😢 hugs💜💜💜
entered my heart ,,,all the way from plaestine

Another good song. You make more reasons to come back.
Brilliant sound, you're really good 🌹
🇮🇷
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Would love to hear you in person!
Good job ❤❤
All the way from Australia old mate, one of the best performers I have seen. My kids have grown up with your music on replay each night. You are up there with Liam Clancy!
Great version of this my grandad used to sing this all the time and would listen to late great Barney McKenna sing it I was 8 when I saw the dubs play Vicar Street in 06
I came here because I can't get his cover of "the idiot" with bonus verse out of my damn head! Great work I wish my mother could hear you sing
Superb performance!
I was hoping for The Tragically Hip Fiddlers Green after seeing the title... still good though 👍
Just listened to this live just as good
Brilliant 👌
I’ve been vibing hard to “Green and Red of Mayo by The Saw Doctors and thinking that it really needs Seth’s voice…
One of the lines in a verse says “…and now I must depart it…” [Mayo, his home], so the song lends itself to those of us so far away from home, by choice or force or circumstance, whether in proximity or otherwise.
One could even dedicate to 🏰tine and those who were forced to leave their homes.
I literally found your youtube yesterday and I didnt realize this came out the same day. This song is so catchy and Ive been playing this nonstop.
big love from germany for your singing......you are amazing!
Great stuff! And please, let's hear a cover of Freedom come all ye.
This is my favorite irish song used to sing it will kayaking down the grand river during covid
It's not an Irish song, it's English. Written by John Conolly from Grimsby.
here for comparison is John singing his song (he is a lovely chap) ... ruclips.net/video/_E_yY-xJDx4/видео.html
Seth, please play in England. I want to hear your beautiful voice live.
