My husband and I just watched the first two episodes. We were laughing so hard. My husband hates musicals while I was raised on them, so the premise of the story resonated with us. When my husband didn’t understand a musical reference, even though it was hilarious, I was able to fill him in on what song from what musical was being parodied. Talk about brilliant! So, even if you normally hate musicals like my husband does check out “schmigadoon” because it’s a parody of musicals and not actually a regular musical. The cast is Broadway musical royalty. I can’t wait to see the other four episodes and am happy to hear that there’s a season 2 being talked about.
Just read the Slate review and I am less skeptical now. Now I gotta find a way to see it. I liked Galavant for a few episodes….then it lost me. Maybe this helps us recover from Annette 😜
If you haven't heard of or seen Brigadoon you might miss the jokes. Or the one big joke. What these campy shows do however, is take away the power and the quality of genuine revivals of classic shows, because the real thing has what these shows lack - truly great songs, and thrilling dances. That was what the recent, radical re-invention of Oklahoma did. It destroyed the original masterpiece totally. For good. The real thing of course is really hard to get right. Carousel, My Fair Lady, Fiddler revivals all missed out, big time. My guess would be this will wear very thin very fast.
