Rich, just got my first laser yesterday and have been learning LightBurn by watching RUclips videos and trial and error (so far, I haven't caught any furniture on fire). I was engraving fairly small pieces (about 1" by 1") and was pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to get the laser module / beam to return to the same spot when there was a new piece to be engraved. The first project came out perfect, but darned if I could get that laser module / beam back to where it needed to be on subsequent pieces. OMG! Hi Rich. I’m new to these machines. I have been doing research on programming and hardware. Thanks for all your videos. I appreciate your details and I look forward to getting my first Light Burner soon.
This is such an outstanding series of videos Rich, thanks for taking the time to do these ! It's kinda funny, I had just gone through all of the Lightburn docs and have to say, everything is in there. They were a great help in getting me going with my new CNC machine and understanding how the coordinates really work.I'm learning my machine for both CNC and the laser side purely for my own enjoyment (at age 61) and am having a blast learning and with videos like yours it really is satisfying to make progress and have things work the way they are supposed to..BTW, I only started down this path this past spring with a Genmitsu 6050...Fun stuff for sure, I should have done this years ago ! Cheers from Utah ;-)
Looking through your archive, Rich & came across this video. Great tutorial & easy to follow. I'm learning so much from your channel. Thanks again for taking the time to make these videos
18:24 I do something similar to the framing square. But I have a honeycomb that I always leave in place. Instead of a framing square I screw a 12 inch square piece of 1/8 inch plywood in the corner of the honeycomb. I then draw a 12 inch square with the top left corner at the absolute position of X = 20 & Y = 20. This leaves an "L" shape corner which is perfectly square with the laser and at the exact location of 20 20. Now I can put my material in the corner and draw the material and set it to a "Tool Path" and use that to center my project. Or put material in the corner and draw an array of places to put multiple blanks for coasters or anything. It is so simple in use, but hard to explain.
Brilliant minds think alike Tom! 🤪 That's how I used to do my jobs with the honeycomb before the LaserMATIC. I had a 12x12 L made from wood with dowels in it that fit into the waste board holes.
Hey Rich, I’ve been using my laser(XTool D1Pro 10w) for approximately 2 months now and I’ve learnt so much from you and your channel. I just came across this video of laser positioning and again I have to make more room in my brain for useful info. Like the elderly gent you mentioned, I to lack certain skills with computers and laser programs. I do so much appreciate fellows such as yourself that are sooo willing to share your knowledge. I did use remote assistance once before fixing our tankless water heater and wow it was fantastic learning by “hands on “ method. PS. Evelyn’s Fettuccine is so good we’ve had it a few times since watching that video.

I struggle with positioning every time I laser something. I need to watch this video a few times to fry the information into my brain. I love the way you teach Rich, thank you so much. I need to do some coasters tonight, so will try this method. I should also burn the grid on my spoil board, and ensure my laser is "fastened" to the spoil board so it doesn't move, right? YOU ROCK!
Another fellow manual reader!!!! My kids laugh at me because I always complain about phones not coming with a manual!! This may sound stupid but I had no idea about the F1 function. Looking forward to being able to solve some of my issues and thank you so much for the clear explanation of setting up the origins.!
Fantastic.... thanks for this video...I've followed you on Instagram as well. Happy New Year. Everytime I open up Lightburn I learn something new and your videos are amazingly helpful.
I got a corner bracket 3d printed for the same reason. Having a physical stop to line up 0/0 takes a lot of the headache away and for the simple solution of a framing square and some double sided tape it is well worth it! Too often people just think they can drop a workpiece down and get perfect results and they are disappointed when the burn ends poorly.
I too just printed a set of corner brackets that align my honeycomb in a usable area of the 400x410 workspace my laser advertises. For instance with a pencil jig previously made, based on this video, what I'm gathering is to push the laser to the "new" origin (0,0 of the centered bed), fire it and line it up and then hit set origin along with user origin and lower left dot? Question then becomes like the elderly man you assisted, how do I re-align the jig design so I can just drop pencils in and print names? My sense tells me to make another one :-(, but my gut tells me there's a way. Thoughts?
Ordered a diode laser calls atomstack s 20pro and while waiting for it to come from China learning from ppl like u. Thank u and ppl like u for all the work !
Thanks again Rich! I read the F1 doc as you suggested but couldn't get my head around it! My husband has been an analyst programmer for 35+years and one of his favourite sayings is "Shit in Shit out!" and always says "Make RUclips your friend". Anyway, after banging my head on the wall trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, I have followed your User Origin instructions and it worked spot on! Lightburn is a brilliant product that I will have to master (slowly).

Hey Rich, Thanks for your time and great tutorial. could you expand this tutorial for the YRC Ortur Roller with your other tutorial *Understanding Lightburn Origins, Absolute Coordinates & Settings!*. I had power outage while engraving LM2 pro and YRC chuck, but I was not able to continue the job. probably because I was using "current position". well I am not sure on how to use the other positioning modes when I have my rotary enabled.

@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thanks Rich, as I say I am new to the Laser world and that is one superb machine, I have searched all the usual retailers and I cannot find one anywhere. I will for the moment purchase the Sculpfun S10 and maybe upgrade to the Roly LaserMatic in the future. Thanks for replying to my question and keep your excellent tutorials coming mate.
Just saw this instructional video and it was very helpful, thank you. Quick question, how did you make the 9 permanent squares on the grid? I mostly burn 4X4 coasters but resetting 1 at a time is time consuming. Thanks again!
I understand your issue but I’ll never be an instagram user. It’s enough dealing with fb and RUclips but love your videos and I’ve learned a lot from you. Keep up the great work.
Can you explain about using the square on the bed? Love your videos. I have learned more for your videos than anything else. You are great at explaining and show how to do stuff. Thanks.
Hopefully you see this and are kind enough to answer. Your videos are FANTASTIC, they got me going. I believe I screwed up a setting...comgrow 3018 w/ laser head. It seems to reset home to the upper right, out of bounds, trips things and stops with errors. If I manually rehome the head and restart the laser it agrees 0/0 lower left is home. After cutting ANYTHING 'home' is now upper right and lower left is -299/-180. And it won't let me jog back to the lower left. If I stop it as it homes to the upper right I can jog left and right, but BOTH Y buttons jog up and away... I assume I have set something wrong in LIghtburn OR need some G code to set things right when I start up.
apparently because it can be a CnC as well the bed is in negative coords. Got it mostly figured out now..trial and error and bourbon. tomorrow is another day. if it's consistent i'll do burn/performance/focus tests and try some actual products.
Hi Rich, do you have a video on installing limit switches on a diode laser machine and how to switch or reverse the stepper motor? It's moving the laser head to the left back side of the machine where the limit switch is on the lower left side corner. Now I gotta order a new belt for my machine. I need advice badly. I'm still new to lightburn . The machine is f50 laser fumorclu 5.5w with a Makerbase V1.1 thanks for your videos they help a lot. I'm also installing lightburn Cam 500.
Man thanks for the videos!!! I have a CNC but new to the laser and light burn. You have made things much easer!!! And yes it would have helped if I would’ve taken the time to read more about the program. Have a great day!!
You have to mount the laser to a waste board so it doesn't move. Once you've done that, you can download a grid on my free forums, in the Members Only Download section: lahobbyguy.com/bb. Then you set it to output and burn the grid on the wood. Once that's done, you select everything on the work bed in Lightburn and put it on a tool path, layer T1 or T2. Then with it all selected, right click on it and select lock shapes. Here's a how to video: ruclips.net/video/mFEqBNhe_7E/видео.html
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thanks very much for the advice mate, I’ll have a go at this at the weekend - I joined your website yesterday- very helpful! I was able to down load the cut and engrave library but for some reason lightburn couldn’t see the art links in the folder to load them, I’ll have another go later on after work - thank you 👍
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy thank you, all sorted, the art tab wasn’t there but it worked fine once I clicked on it in the window tab like you said - cheers !!
I feel this is what I was asking on another video. So with a template if I use Absolute where ever I put a coaster that is where the laser will go to engrave and not the empty spots?
0/0 will be where the limit switch activates. You'll need to keep the laser from going to far to top of the Y (the amount you moved the switch) or it will hit the top rail.
One more thing, sorry but I have the Lasertree k-20 and can't figure out how to use the cross hair that the laser has. I have asked around, but never got an answer. How do I line up the material using it?
New followe. Late to the game. I don't have a laser yet but, love your channel and trying to learn everything before I buy a laser! I don't have Instagram.

My sense tells me to make another one :-(, but my gut tells me there's a way. Thoughts?
Thank you for all your videos! You make everything so easy to understand!
Glad you like them!
Thank you sooo much. Love your voice. You should consider reading audio books.
Awesome! 👍 Thanks for watching Betty!
Ordered a diode laser calls atomstack s 20pro and while waiting for it to come from China learning from ppl like u. Thank u and ppl like u for all the work !
Hope you enjoy it! I'll be doing a review on that one soon as well.
Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience!
My pleasure Ron!
You'll be an expert in no time Kathy! You can do it! 👍
Thanks for the explanation Rich. Good video.
My pleasure Randy!
hello, i have watch this video in and off on another accounts ( other computer ) so i can see, listen and do some test on lightburn. I just would like to say tank you. I have learn some important basics and so much more to do. have a nice day
Awesome! 👍 Thanks for watching!
My Name is Eliseo I am very happy that I found the right video that explained every detail on how to fix my problem I almost gave up engraveing i say to you thank you thank you thank you i really fix my problem for now on I will be asking you all other videos did not help me at all God Bless You and Family
Wow! Thank you so much! Welcome aboard Eliseo!
Thank you very much, your videos are very helpful!
Glad you like them!
After using Lightburn for 4 years I learned about the F1 key! From you! 😁🛫
Awesome! 👍 Thanks for watching!
Thank you Rich, found you on IG. I currently only use "current position", however with your video I plan to study the other two options. Thank you for all of your helpful videos!
Welcome aboard Donald!
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thank you, enjoying the libraries and all of your creative artwork!
Hi Rich. Yes as always fantastic video and lecture, you were born true teacher, it is so easy to listen to you with out breaking my mind. Thank you from Poland
Wow, thank you Bob!
9 followers now. I appreciate your time and tutorials.
I just bought my first 10w diode laser and using the GRBL software I'm learning more because Lightburn keeps shutting my laser unit down because the gcode keeps tripping the limits and I've not figured out the cause.
Probably using the wrong device settings Eric.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy I imported the device settings from the flash drive that came with but after watching your video few times I went and made a few changes and seems to have worked out. Thank you!
I have two videos on the YRR roller accessories. A power outage will always ruin the job on a roller.
Believe it or not my wife took a photo of me 20 years ago on Christmas morning reading a manual to one of the grandchildren’s new toy! 🤯🛫it is amazing what one can by doing that!
Yep, the manual is the force!
Did NOT know about the F1 function!!! Thanks
Lots of hidden secrets in Lightburn Fred!
Clear as mud. So you click the upper right dot, and it frames in the lower left corner. Seems like it's upside-down.
It takes some getting used to, but it does make sense in the CNC world.
Thank you sir for making all your tutorials, I do not have a Laser at the moment but I am thinking of buying the SCULPFUN S10 Air Assist Pump Laser Engraving Machine 10W Engraver. Just for making things for friends and family. I am watching your channel just to learn the best way to use Lightburn, I have watched other channels, but you are the best instructor that I have found, so thank you for all the hard work you do producing and making your tutorials. Am I right in thinking that everything you teach is applicable to any make of laser.
Look at my video on the Roly LaserMATIC 10 Russell.
Good evening, thanks for the video, I'm still new to this, so very helpful keep on going, and have a happy new year 2022, God bless you
Glad it was helpful Peter! Thank you!
i appreciate learning from you as i just got started with a laser diode machine and your help videos have really helped me thank you!!!!!
Glad to help Harry!
Just saw this instructional video and it was very helpful, thank you. Quick question, how did you make the 9 permanent squares on the grid? I mostly burn 4X4 coasters but resetting 1 at a time is time consuming. Thanks again!
I made a grid in Lightburn. Templates are available on my free forums in the members only section. lahobbyguy.com/bb
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy thank you, I’ll check them out.
thanks again rich for your videos. i have struggled with this exact topic. HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR!!!!
Happy new year Jim! Glad to help Sir!
Have no fear - I just found and followed you on your IG account - enjoyed all the pics of your work - awesome!
Thanks Terry! I appreciate that!
Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm slowly learning how to use light burn watching your videos. God bless!
Happy to help!
I understand your issue but I’ll never be an instagram user. It’s enough dealing with fb and RUclips but love your videos and I’ve learned a lot from you. Keep up the great work.
That's okay Bill, I understand! I don't even do Facebook anymore, just the groups.
Perfectly and understandably explained as always Rich .
Thank you kindly Jürgen!
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy You´re welcome Rich.
Thank you for sharing your. Great information. F1,F1. Everyone stay safe, warm, happy and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia
F1 to you too Norm... I mean Happy Holidays! 🤪🎅🏽🎊
Can you explain about using the square on the bed? Love your videos. I have learned more for your videos than anything else. You are great at explaining and show how to do stuff. Thanks.
Not in a RUclips comment, but you can feel free to ask in my Forum! lahobbyguy.com/bb/
Check the origin in the Device settings Chris.
First, thank you because you’ve been very helpful. But the F1 button does not work for me? Is there a place to download the manual.
On the Lightburn website. docs.lightburnsoftware.com/
great vid as always and happy new year to you
Happy new year to you and yours too!
No, but it seems you have the origin set wrong in Lightburn. Go to the Device Settings and set the origin to the bottom left.
Man thanks for the videos!!! I have a CNC but new to the laser and light burn. You have made things much easer!!! And yes it would have helped if I would’ve taken the time to read more about the program. Have a great day!!
Glad to help Nolan!
Rich you are on top of this ..... Thank you for the help!
Happy to help!
Thanks this is brilliant! How do yo make the grid in the first place on the screen and on the machine please?
I was able to down load the cut and engrave library but for some reason lightburn couldn’t see the art links in the folder to load them, I’ll have another go later on after work - thank you 👍
You have to be on the Art Library to load them. There are two tabs, Library for settings, and Art Library for art files.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thank you very much I’ll give it a go 👍
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy thank you, all sorted, the art tab wasn’t there but it worked fine once I clicked on it in the window tab like you said - cheers !!
Thank you for your fantastic expertise and knowledge. I love the way you teach, thank you!!
So nice of you Karla, thanks!
I feel this is what I was asking on another video. So with a template if I use Absolute where ever I put a coaster that is where the laser will go to engrave and not the empty spots?
Yep
Thanks for your videos, no account on Instagram, probably not ever. Cheers!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much. This is just what I needed. Getting ready to burn has been horrible.
Glad you enjoyed it Jeffrey!
Came back and rewatched this one..thanks again for the help on ig!
Awesome! 👍 Thanks for watching!
Thanks for all the work you put in to teach us Rich. Followed you on IG and looking forward to learning more from your channel in 2022.
Awesome, thank you!
Best laser Chanel!!! Good content and easy to follow.
Wow, thanks! 👍
Thank you so much for the great video and advice. I will start reading the manual! Lightburn should pay you to teach workshops!
Please do Douglass! Everything you need to know is in there!
Very clear, and excellent as always! Thank you.
"F1" is a mantra that can't be repeated enough :)
So true! Years ago F1 is all we had. Today, most people never heard of it! 🤪
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy How can I get the F1 function on MacBook air?? I don't think I have that option. Thank you!!
Really enjoy your vids they help me out a lot !! Thank you 🙏 I’ve added a laser to my wood shop and new doors are opening
Great to hear!
Great videos. I have installed a LT K-20 on my ORTUR LM2 Pro S2, and I had to move the limit switches. How does that affect Absolute Coordinates?
0/0 will be where the limit switch activates. You'll need to keep the laser from going to far to top of the Y (the amount you moved the switch) or it will hit the top rail.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy I did put spacers on the limit switches so it won't hit the rails. Will I still be able to get center?
One more thing, sorry but I have the Lasertree k-20 and can't figure out how to use the cross hair that the laser has. I have asked around, but never got an answer. How do I line up the material using it?
You'll be able to.
Click the Gear icon, then the Display tab, and then turn on Show Work Area Center Cross.
I have the Xtool d1 diode lazer 5watt . At what setting should I engrave a family picture into hard white maple ?
I don't know, you have to do material testing.
New followe. Late to the game. I don't have a laser yet but, love your channel and trying to learn everything before I buy a laser! I don't have Instagram.
Welcome aboard! IG locks me out every day 😩 So not a big deal...
Thanks again Rich, for this one and all your vids. I’m like a sponge soaking in all this knowledge.
Awesome Tony! You're so welcome! ✔️
I'm new to lasers. I have an OMTech K40+. Is there a way to put a grid on the laser floor that corresponds to the grid in Light Burn?
Not that I know of Scott.
How did you know how to make the 9 boxes the right size and where to place them?
I designed it for 4" coasters and placed them evenly on the workspace.
hello, I have the problem that what the framing does is not the same as what the laser would do (the laser is totally off). Any suggestions? thanks pat
Work in absolute coordinates on the laser tab.
Thank you Rich, Hi from New Zealand, I am looking at the olm3 for my birthday 😁😁😁
Nice machine Ray! Happy Birthday! 🎂
Hi, thanks for the informative videos, have benefited greatly from them. has two lasers, Ortur aufero and Sculpfun S9. both work well. follows you further.
Thanks Kjell, I appreciate the support!
Followed! I'm rarely on it though. I prefer Pinterest and Esty (great place to buy stuff and support small businesses!)
The internet is full of trolls, people get brave and obnoxious when they can hide behind a keyboard. I ignore them cause all they are looking for is attention.
Great video! Love the content! and glad the COVID didn't get you down.
Thanks Jason! I really appreciate it!!
i have limit switches on my sculphun s30 pro max but the keep giving problems zo i did remove them
Make sure you always move the laser module to the home position before turning on the laser.
I have a business. Same issue with Instagram lol I think people just scroll and don't like or follow as much as RUclips.
BTW great videos
Agreed!
Love your videos. Helped me a lot. Thanks, man and greetings from Germany.
Thank you Dietz!
Great video thanks for all the videos I am new to diode laser I ran Cincinnati CL 5 it had stops x an y Zero everything I ran were set at zero all programs we ran from those points
Would it alright to setup my Ortur Laser Master 2 Pro x and y zero start point
