    I would love to learn from Jason how to forge. I make knives using the stock removal method but I really want to learn how to forge. These guys are very lucky to have such a opportunity to learn from such a great smith.

    • @JasonKnightMS
      @JasonKnightMS  3 года назад

      I started making stock removal knives when I was in my teens. I learned to forge in my late 20s. I stand behind both methods. Both have pros and cons. With stock removal, you are limited by the size of your stock, with forging you may be limited by the size of your workspace and/or location.

      @@JasonKnightMS I have a pretty good size workspace and just bought a forge am saving for some hammers and tongs. I am saving as much materials that I can get my hands on like cable, rr spikes and spring clips for I live next to a railroad and walking along it to find some materials I can practice on.

    What stainless are you using? 400 series? I've tried forge welding 300 series stainless to 1084 using the same method of welding shut all the seams, no luck.

    A little off topic but, where do you find grinding wheels rated for the speeds of the 4 1/2 inch grinders?
    Or are your grinders vari-speed? My Milwaukee is 12k rpms and so far I haven't been able to find any.
    Thank you.

    Funniest part was watching the one guy try and figure out how to turn the tools on. That is why every middle and high school in the country should have to have some form of shop class as part of the curriculum. Sadly the vast majority of schools would rather put all their funds into their sports programs instead of actually teaching the student skills they can use in their day to day lives.

    • @squeakymoma
      @squeakymoma 4 года назад

      I couldn't agree more! I've watched so many programs get cut for sports. Arts, home economic, many vo-tec classes, ROTC programs in many school. It's really a shame. My brother learned welding and diesel mechanics in high school and he used both thought his career.

    • @Regdiggs
      @Regdiggs 4 года назад +1

      @@squeakymoma I was the kid who looked forward to taking shop my whole life. I couldn't wait until I got to middle and high school so I could take it. When I finally got there I was only able to take it for one semester then they got rid of it to put that money into the football program. One of many reasons I do not believe schools should have a sports program below the college level. If you want to play sports when you get to college that's fine you will be paying for it out of your own pocket. But the rest of the taxpayers shouldn't get stuck footing the bill for you to play a game in public school.

    • @Regdiggs
      @Regdiggs 4 года назад +1

      @@squeakymoma another aspect I don't agree with is college scholarships. I don't know how they did things where you went to school but in mine they had a select group of students that they even told were available. That is something that every student should be offered a chance to get. Good student or bad they should all be afforded the opportunity to apply for them not just those on the football team or the cheerleaders or the rich kids.

    • @squeakymoma
      @squeakymoma 4 года назад

      @@Regdiggs having worked for a college in law enforcement after finishing as a student I can assure you the favor towards sports and the athletes was just as bad if not worse. Coaches would bend over backwards to help one of their athletes as would much of the administration. Non-athletic students didn't get the same favor. As for scholarships, I've seen it work both ways. Leaving high school only the favorites were told about certain scholarships regardless of their grades. In college one of my teachers offered me a scholarship my second year because I worked hard and had excellent grades in my field and he knew I was struggling financially. He said the college gave so many academic scholarships for each department head to recommend as they saw fit. He tried to give them to those in need who worked hard for their grades.

      Just playing a bit of devil's advocate here, but using a powertool isn't exactly something that's in everyone's daily lives either. It's a bit of a niche scenario itself. TBH, when it comes to most stuff, there's a manual that can be referred to.
