- I moved to Fort Nelson in the north of British Columbia to work for the world champions in dog mushing - The Streeper Kennels.
Fort Nelson is a town of 3300 inhabitants, and it lays at the Alaska Highway and it is not the typical destination during a work&travel stay in Canada. However, I saw a post that the Streeper Kennels searching for a dog handler to take care of the dogs until the end of winter.
I love dogs and if I would live in a bigger place, I would already have my own dog. To be honest I didn’t even know that there are these kinds of jobs. It is an absolute dream, and I am very happy that I got accepted.
The biggest challenge was to come from Vancouver to Fort Nelson. A lot of connections are canceled due to CoVid and besides that Fort Nelson is not a popular tourist spot. The only way to go to Fort Nelson for a reasonable price was by bus. It took my five days and three different busses. However this way I could finally see a little bit of Canada.
The bus connection was very reliable and I enjoyed my times at the mandatory stops.
Now I am in Fort Nelson and work as a dog handler. Here we have real winter conditions with heaps of snow and temperatures down to -35°C.
It is also a good spot to see the aurora or also known as northern lights. One day they were pretty strong here. To witness this is super special and I have no doubt that it was the best decision to leave Vancouver to move here.

This may be the best video on fort Nelson i have seen on all of utube. Thanks for sharing.
Dutch guy finding there roots. Thanks for sharing Sir!
I'm surprised you were even able to get a bus, Greyhound no longer does these runs. You need to own a vehicle in Canada.
Other companies have emerged trying to fill that gap.
Brrrr. Looks cold…but very beautiful.
It's pretty cool to see my hometown in this video!
do you see the auroras clearly over there?
also where do i find wendigoes?
@@Dubs22005 bro wtf. You’re 12 grow up 😂
@@Boom-in3nx but what about auroras?
I miss Fort Nelson and the Streepers. You are so lucky to experience that. One of my favorite times!
I remember riding the bus with a few of the streepers, my mom actually used to drive that bus route, out towards the golf course :)
Welcome to Fort Nelson!
Wish I could get there too....I had been trying to get a job some place similar to that....will love to settle there permanently.....🙂🙂🙂🙂
Welcome, Even though I'm late!
Awesome thumbnail!
very nice travelling
Considering moving to Fort Nelson. Any advice?
Have mechanical skills & bring your own car. Don't be afraid of animals or the cold.
Hey, i want to know when is the Northern lights festival?
hi im looking to relocate and wondering if you still like it there ?
I was thinking of moving there because it's cheaper. Please let me know of you need a car everywhere for this location..thank you!
Fort Nelson is pretty small and has no public transport. If you live close to one of the supermarkets you could walk there and to all stores at the main road. However it can get pretty cold in the winter for a stroll. I would recommend to have a car if you stay long term.
@@TravellingwithManuel ok and is the area safe? I heard there are not good living situations in fort neslon but don't know accurately how it is because we have never been but are considering moving somewhere remote similar to this area. How are schools for children? I have kids and I am a single mom looking for somewhere cheap for rent for a few years but also want to be safe..can you tell me more information please!🙂
I can't tell. I live outside of town and just go every other day to the supermarket. It seems safe to me and Fort Nelson is a pretty small community.
@@nicolenunes3739 Fort Nelson is a great place to live, nice and safe and very friendly. I lived there back in the 80s for 3 months and got involved in the community. I also worked with Streepers for a bit, helped with the race and the race club. Stayed with them for a few weeks.
I did some volunteering at one of the schools, we used to play volly ball at the high school.. Pretty, friendly but cold in the winter. The cold was better to deal with then our dampness in Ontario. Days get real short and that bothered me, I was only there in the winter.
Can be a bit expensive living way up north because everything has to be shipped up there. A lot of the jobs pay good due to the isolation pay.
I live here
Sorry to hear that.
I want to live there
@@eamonhunter8978 why
hey gage👋
Hi Gage how do you like it have you Iived there long? I might be working up that way, Dave.
What can you tell me about the culture?
Isolation (too cold), Drinking problem (people drunk and died outside), I took a correspondent course instead of regular school (no bus at my time) ….
You can tell who keeps their head down and stays straight/clean. Great culture if you don’t mind the isolation. 12yr olds ripping summit 800’s to school in the winter, and can am renegades in the summer. Jet boating the tuchodi river is something i still brag about. The shop I worked at had an airstrip 50 meters away, bush planes coming and going. Guy I worked with was 18 and building his own jet boats from sheet stainless. Was a work town when I was there in the early 2010’s. Heard it’s since died down dramatically. Closed business and a lot of people left.
Sounds a lot like where i grew up
Tough town. I grew up there.
U meet my best friend?
OMG SYDNIIIIII I was found his videos and I was looking thorough the comments and found you!!!
The dogs are generally not beaten, but definitely abused..
Sorry what? Most people see sled dogs and automatically think “abused” but most sled dog kennels dog’s are trained athletes, VERY fit, and are bred for this sport and the weather conditions
