USS Barnett (APA-5) with LCVPs around her. During the Normandy landings Barnett carried troops of 4th Infantry Division to Utah Beach.
US Navy photo. Photos and text scanned from "D-Day In Photographs by Portsmouth City Council", The History Press. ISBN 978 7524 7479 3.
General Teddy Roosevelt, 56 years old, was on the USS Barnett.
My Uncle Don Wells was an Ensign on the USS Barnett. It was the first to land troops. He spoke of delivering General Teddy Roosevelt to the beach who commanded the landings from the beach with no concern for his safety. Evidently, the Barnett then went to Italy, and then on to the Pacific. He never said what he did in the Pacific. As for what happened at Normandy he did not talk about it even to his kids, only telling me that it was "Hell."
