    There's a few things to watch out for on these bikes as I covered in my video's, sounds like the idle circuit in the carbs is blocked, strip them right down and ultra sonic clean the bodies would be a good idea and clean the top rear engine mounting bolt, to remove the oil dipstick you need to apply equal pressure to each end of the finger grip part such as large plyers and just apply pressure and it will ease off very slowly

    Get an ultra sonic cleaner for the carb. They are the nuts. Then i'd consider a jet kit. Clean the tank then add a new tap i reckon. Make sure there is an inline filter between the tap and the carbs, as that will stop any shite from the tank blocking things up. Cheers.

    To check if it'll turn over and fire up, you can squirt a bit of 3% 2-stroke pre-mix into the spark plug hole. This'll lubricate the dry cylinders AND fire up momentarily.
    😊 👍

  • @originalshadowfax
    @originalshadowfax 6 месяцев назад +2

    I've followed your previous "restorations" with interest and I hope some constructive criticism and positive comments. BUT with this one, real basic common sense seems to have been missed. I'm actually amazed that it did start, considering the state of the air filter and all that powder that will have been sucked into bone dry bores (should have used a hoover or one of those car hoover things) to get rid. Also taken the carbs off and stripped and refurbed them, I can (almost) guarantee that they will have to come off at some point. The state of the tank, you can get one of those cheap endoscopes off Amazon or Temu that goes on your phone to check out the inside more thoroughly.

  • @ThatOldHonda
    @ThatOldHonda 6 месяцев назад +2

    Just take plugs out and spin it over and watch oil light, that way you know you have oil pressure, hate it when those oil filler plugs seize, heat is the answer just dont melt it, engine sounded sweet though, really easy to do cam chain tension on those too

    I would of sprayed sea foam or penetrating oil down the cylinders and let it soak through first. I would also of cleaned the carbs and jets out. Then sprayed the bike it penetrating oil and let it soak, then clean it off with a rag helps with seized nuts and bolts, the clutch would be out and cleaned and replaced or refitted. The engine will polish up with autosolve metal polish. The petrol tank inside would be cleaned and left to soak in 20 percent vingegar then neutralised with baking soda, then a ethanol proof liner. It all depends how far you want to go with it. Best of luck keep up the good work.

    Back when bikes were made to last,I still see the (very) occasional Superdream on the road and a workmate still runs a scruffy but reliable 1979 XS400 as his daily commuter.
    Those oil caps used to tighten up even when the bikes were quite new,maybe the plastic expanded with heat or something ,I'm not sure a blowlamp was the best idea,there should be a rubber O ring under the cap.
    Still loads of spares around as they were the best-selling bike in the UK until the government got fed up when the answer from the manufacturers to pleas to tone down the power race that was killing young lads was a raised middle finger in the shape if things like the Suzuki RG250 and the KR1S Kawasaki and brought in a 125 learner limit with very little notice. Suddenly the market was flooded with the things,dealers wouldn't take them in part exchange and people like me who wanted cheap runabouts were picking up year old 250's for 200 quid from desperate sellers.
    They are actually very easy to work on, I've known a few "enthusiastic amateurs" over the years that have rebuilt them with a Haynes manual and a bit of common sense,
    Exhaust system might well self-destruct when you take it off,the collector box was always a weak spot.

    I acquired an abandoned 1979 Honda CB400A and that also ran after I fitted a new battery. Amazing! Mind you, the carbs widdled fuel everywhere and in the end I had a vast amount of work to do in the engine to get it reliable, but now it’s a lovely little bike to ride & definitely a keeper.

  • @presstodelete1165
    @presstodelete1165 6 месяцев назад

    When did draining the fuel tank become part of an oil change? You seem to have a strange order of working with almost every thing you do.
    for instance take the front off the headlamp before you take off the shell, then you don't end up juggling parts while trying to use tools.
    I commend your enthusiasm but some time with an experienced mechanic would pay dividends in the long run.

    Enjoying the super dream restoration. Hard to believe it would start after been stood for 3 decades. I remember my dad using easy start on a dumper truck in the 70s, would not ever start without it. Make sure you have fire extinguishers better safe than sorry.😊

      Depends what you wanted/expected. I was picking up mint Superdreams for years after the learner law was changed to 125's almost overnight and they became almost unsellable. I just wanted cheap,reliable runabouts for commuting and they were great for that,I had 4 250's and 2 400's over the years. Yes the 250 was a bit lame but it was possible to pick up mint ones for moped money for years,400 was actually a very nice bike.
