The curtain rises on an epic battle royale between brave warriors who lived through an uncertain era.
In the late 19th century during the Meiji period, 292 warriors, including Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada), gather at Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto at nightfall, lured by the promise of a huge cash prize. Each given a wooden tag, they join a vicious game in which they must steal the tags of their fellow participants and reach Tokyo to win the prize money. Under the veil of night, the temple grounds are filled with unease and the presence of bloodthirsty warriors. When the signal is given to begin the game, the combatants launch into their relentless battle for survival.

For those not aware this is a live action adaptation of the Manga with the same name, Last Samurai Standing, which began being serialised on 2022 in Japan, and the English version started releasing this year.

Actually, the manga itself is based on the novel tetralogy of the same title. There are 4 books: Heaven, Earth, Man, and God. The last book was released last month, and I finished it after a few days. In my opinion, it's a masterpiece with a flavor of Rurouni Kenshin and Battle Royale . I speculate from the cast that the Netflix series might cover the first two books.

The lead actor, Junichi Okada, is a Japanese actor who holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has mastered Jeet Kune Do, the Filipino martial art Kali, mixed martial arts, and Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū.
His action is the real deal.

Im reporting back to this comment. This show was absolute fire. Junichi Okada has fully impressed me yet again. I had a great time watching this show.
If Im watching an action film or show and I find myself rewatching the fight scenes to catch every little thing, that means they did something special. That was fun.
Now, I will meditate until season two.

Junicho Okada is one of my favorite Japanese actors. He looks tough but also has a comedic side. His other movies, The Fable and Hell Dogs, are also very good.

Okay, I love whoever made the swords clang in time with the music.
This looks absolutely incredible! I especially want to highlight the incredible Junichi Okada. He's not just the star; he also choreographed the intense action scenes and is a real-life martial arts expert. His presence and deep skill are so reminiscent of the legendary Hiroyuki Sanada, who is rightly conquering Hollywood with the hit show Shogun. I really hope this series gives Okada the global recognition he deserves, because this show is shaping up to be a total smash hit!
Also Takayuki Yamada who manages to be one of the best parts of every movie or show he's in, guy's an acting beast

Battle Royale is also not original, the creator of battle Royale even said that it was inspired by The Long Walk (1979) by Stephen king, also battle Royale has a lot of similarities with The Running Man (1982) also created by Stephen king, not just that but many critics immediately drew similar parallels to ” Lord of the Flies” (1954) by William Golding. Another similar piece to battle royal is The Most Dangerous Game” (1924) by Richard Connell , all of these novels and movies were published and released before battle royal and were very similar to battle Royale, obviously the creator of battle Royale took ideas and concepts from these pieces. Maybe educate urself instead of embarassing urself.

Japan developed the survival game genre back in the 1990s. Over the years, they have produced many high-quality projects that have become the foundation of the genre. In 2000, the manga and film "Battle Royale" were released, which has become a household name and is well-known. The Squid Game uses concepts that were already present in Japan. The squid game is not something unique that needs to be compared to other projects. It's just the only project in this genre that you know about. That's all.

Many people are getting irritated now whenever someone mentions "Oh, so this is a Japanese Squid Game" even though SG copied a lot of the Japanese death games/battle royales.
It's like whenever there's an assassin-type gunfu film or series, especially Japanese ones, people always say, "Oh, it's a John Wick wannabe" even though, again, a lot of Japanese have been doing gunfu/assassin stories and fight choreographies.
