I vote you listen to "The Color Purple". I read it a couple of years ago and was surprised by how good it is. I reference it often when discussing books with friends. My expectations were based on the movie (which was fine) but the book had so much more insight into the characters (not surprising since that's how most movie adaptations go). I was particularly moved by the story of her children which was briefly touched upon in the movie.

The Color Purple was great. I'm sure you've been warned that it has some difficult moments (particularly the first few pages), but it was very good and well worth the read. The book is an epistolary novel and may be better to read as a physical or e-book, but that's just my opinion. Happy reading!

Hei, Emily! Long time follower here❤, I see you started enjoying short story collections so I immideately tought of Alice Munro's "Too much happiness" . The stories start out with the characters going on about their day, or getting through a period of their lives while reminscing on what happendled in the past. But the stories always slide down some weid path, in the end. One gets immersed pretty quickly in these, the writer has a way with words that draws you in (no wonder she is a Nobel Prize winner). I highly reccommend it!

The thing I liked least about The Spellshop was the main character. I completely related to her obsession with protecting books and tendency to go off on mental tangents, but I thought she made some choices that didn’t make sense. I loved the companion plants though! And Clawdia and I agree on that amazing hat! ❤

I really enjoyed The Pumpkin Spice Cafe and I'm now reading The Cinnamon Bun Bookstore. I mean, they aren't life changing books lol but I don't see how people can hate them lol. How to sell a haunted house was my third Grady Hendrix, too, but sadly I didn‘t like it. It wasn‘t enough horror for my taste, but I consume a lot of horror content, so my bar is very high 😅

Best books I read in October are probably books that most people have already read and know - I Am Legend (first time through, oh my god what a fantastic book. the movie is trash compared to the book, and I enjoyed the movie a lot) I also read Salem's Lot and Carrie (I had never read a Stephen King book before I read Carrie, and I loved it, I'm unsure which of the King books Iiked more). I was planning on rereading The Road, since it's been years since I've read it, but I ran out of time. I probably would've had time if I hadn't been sick for nearly a whole week... oh well. lol

You might want to try reading Gabor Mate. He's a Canadian physician who is an expert on addictions, trauma and stress. He looks at how childhood development and trauma affect mental and physical health, including autoimmune diseases, cancer, and other disorders. I like what he says about living in toxic culture and its impact on us. Check out his books. Of course, this might not be what you like to read or you might disagree with his findings/views.

I remember reading The Color Purple in high school. I didn't know much about American or African American culture or history back then, so a lot of stuff probably went over my head (I should reread it), but I distinctly remember enjoying it despite that. Enjoying a book when you're being forced to read it for school is a good sign. The only other book that managed that feat for me was Frankenstein.
