Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) vs native mobile apps | Leigh Kendell and Aranda Morrison

On May 8th, Leigh Kendell from Hatchd and Aranda Morrison from Adapptor went head-to-head on that topic at the Perth Mobile App Developers Meetup.
The result was a measured appreciation for both options with a detailed comparison of features, examples of PWAs out in the wild, best use cases, and a view towards the future.

Great convo so far. Apple is the big hurdle.
Slight correction. Bluetooth, USB Devices, Haptics & NFC (not mentioned but a good one) are all already supported generally on on the Web, e.g. Bluetooth since Chrome 56. And there's a few more cool features on the web coming! Excited to see apps render with WebGPU. Project Fugu is a good place to check out.
Uber apparently launched originally as a PWA but moved to native eventually, would be great to know why.
Love Web Share, love the ability of PWAs to handle URIs and, well love PWAs

Great talk. PWAs should be the future here. App stores should allow native or PWA as long as it falls within the guidelines.

I find the lack of installation support frustrating. "Add to home screen" is actually beyond most people. When the automatic installation works its amazing though. But it doesnt work for iOS and some android devices.

pwas are a solution almost no one asked for. i *want* to know i'm offline, i don't want a website pretending i'm still online. 95% of the time it's bad UX. i don't click my browser expecting an offline experience, and never will.
