- This paint-job was done on October 25, 2015 and it still looks great today, April 23, 2020.
The video is meant to be a teaching video that shows and explains the process of fixing a dent by means of questions and answers.
Many have asked for Gerald's contact details. But Gerald said he has more than enough work and did not want me to include any contact info when I first posted the video. Should he ever change his mind about making his contact details public, then I'll be more than happy to include them here in this description.
Hats off to this guy being able to work with someone standing behind him and looking over his shoulder asking a thousand questions. I felt so sorry for him but he kept his cool

This job was done in October 2015 and it still looks great! And to all those who complain about me filming and asking “stupid questions” - let it be known to you that this is what we agreed to before we even made the video.
The Q&A are all intentional so we could make a teaching video for those who have never done this kind of work before. Rather than Gerald talking all the time we decided that I would ask the type of questions a person would have who is a complete beginner at bodywork and Gerald would then answer by explaining what he is doing so others can learn from it.

Good morning. I've worked in the autobody world for nearly 30 years I am a professional fiberglasser. And I can tell you firsthand I've seen a lot of auto bodywork this guy is very good amazingly good I would hire him in a moment. My sincere compliments to Gerald the body man as well as The cameraman. Wow this guy is really good, a pro without doubt. He has a lot of pride in his work. Wish all mobile repair guys would view this. An expert in his field. This guy is legit. The way he steps back looking at the work and feels the metal has the same look that we get as professional carpenters, he's just all business serious about what he does and cares and it shows

@@daxvid82 It would be a “spot welder” that welds the pins to the car so that you can pull on the dents. I would think a quality setup for the tool(without supplies like pins) would start around $500. I’m sure the professional setups are more and can go way up in price. In the video Gerald used a mobile version that can be carried along. Some are on carts or mounted in a shop. “Unispotter”
This guy is fantastic!!!, I've worked in a body shop metal department and worked on Bentley's, Ferrari's and Aston Martin's, this guy is a great all rounder, remember a perfect flat clearcoat repair makes the factory finish stand out. This guy may not be perfect to some of you but then its all done outside man! I bet he would get better results than most so called professional bodyshops with a booth, this guy gets 10 out of 10 for me.
I watch this video once every few months to remind me that there are still, Good, Honest Men working hard for a Living!..BRAVO!

What a bunch of haters. The man did what he was paid to do. He took pride in his work. Customer is happy. I'm sure if he was in a cozy heated and ventilated shop with booth he would of done it differently. Its been 2 years and no issues so like I said, he did what he was paid to do. Well done!
I have been doing auto body repair for 35 years and very rare do I find someone who does mobile auto body work that is a genuine auto body repair mechanic, this guy is genuine. I saw the buckle above the line in the quarter and thought he would miss it but he didn't. I saw the stretched metal at 4:03 buckling and he worked it out. If he had a truck with a heavy duty 9 ton trailer set up for frame pulls that was enclosed with pull out walls he could have a amazing business but he would still need to be a registered repair facility with the state. it is because so many people cob & rip people off that it makes it hard on a guy like this.
Yeah he's so great. Anybody worth their salt in this trade would have that done in one spead, down to 500. Not three. This guy wouldn't last a week where I work.
Yea what was that spreading the filler over and over I was like uhhhh with that little narrow spot putty spreader. But the job turned out pretty nice for a less expensive alternative than paying whole shop prices. Today the shop owner makes all the money the tradesman gets screwed. same flat rate per hour as we got in the 80s. that is BS. I like how this guy says up yours shop I am doing it myself.
Fact.. Shop owner today makes the lesser amount of money. Far less % than 'the 80's in fact. The 'full' cost of overhead, acquisition/maintenance of assets, including employee retention perks, the latest EPA restrictions, let alone the latest insurance mandates, health care and future liabilities against unforeseen judgements, account for the far higher costs of ICAR certified brick and mortar, than a free range DIY, one man operation.
Try doing the books for a year, paying the taxes, the bills, and learn the 'entire' process. Reason that most remain Tradesmen, rather than owners of shops with dozens of unpredictable employees.... and customers.

He should consider having his own channel !!!I found it great information for doing a some minor repairs on a typical daily driver !!!It certainly gives us some good step x step information to consider if we were to tackle a panel repair or touch up work on our cars !!:-)

The amount and quality of work Gerald gets through amazed me. I'm tired just watching the effort he expends. Then cuts and polishes the rest of the car. And does the bumper for nothing. What kind of super-hero have you found? Staggering!
I owned a body shop and garage over 30 years, I would hire this guy on the spot.from watching him work, he Knows what he is doing. The hammer is a good tool, it gives better control when working thin gauge sheet metal than a slide hammer. I always prefer my primer dry for 24 hrs, but in his environment he will have to use a fast dry additive. I can tell by the color of his filler he is using good quality materials.
Great video. We need more people in this world like this guy. He should be paid atleast what the body shops quoted with all of the extras he did. Times are tough but we never want to take advantage of another. Thank you for sharing to remind me of this.

You get what you pay for. In this case he paid to have his car restored and not paying the light bill, water bill, insurance etc at the other shops. I am very busy man but the first 2 minutes fascinated me so much to watch it all and see the final product. To me, he has done a great job! I have seen many body shops but never seen same day paint job.

I also was a professional auto re-finisher for a long time. This guy does a great job. A matrix does not require the same level of detail and quality as a Ferrari. He does a fantastic job and delivered exactly what was expected of him. He should start his own youtube channel.

This guy has less then $100 in cost in this job. He made $300 a day. The client is happy and I'm sure he told his friends. 300 bucks a day, 5 day week. Guys making at least 1500 bucks a week, thats a decent living and he's free. He doesn't have to work for the man. Much respect to him.
Firstly, I'd imagine he had more than $100 tied-up in the job. And, it prolly took longer than one day since it's apparent he shaved and got a haircut before the second half the video was shot. I can't imagine he complained about his respirator not fitting well, then decided to head to the barber shop during his lunch break. Gerald did an awesome job > it was worth a couple more C-notes. Wish he lived near me!

I Wouldnt have charged no less than $800 for everything he done. That was probably a 8hr dent and 4hr of paint work. Just buffing a car and waxing it can cost you $200. The initial out of pocket cost to do a job like that is goin to put you back quite a bit, plus a license, insurance fees, etc. Just a gallon of some good clear can run you $4-600
I must admit I was a little skeptical at first but this guy proved me wrong. HE IS AWESOME!

All I could add he did one excellent job. Whatever he was paid he earned it. Really great to see someone willing to do a job to the best of his abilities. I hope he gets tons of extra work , he is worth it.

I used to own a repair shop and had a guy like that I'd call for paint and body. He'd do magic in the parking lot. A dying breed.

Yup. I do high end detailing and 100% guarantee my compound and polish job would be more expensive than what he got paid for this job. I’d also have done a flawless job. Holograms will start showing up within a month, and those headlights will be back to looking like crap in under a year because he didn’t apply a good UV protectant

Gerald is like the Norm Abram of autobody repair and painting. He did fantastic work.
It's a pain in the backside to work with that new thin sheet metal after it's been stretched in like that. It's pretty common to have to rework it a few times to get it to stick where it's supposed to. sometimes ya have to leave it and use filler to adjust. This dude knows what he is doing and works well with what he has. Pretty sure anyone hating on him is affiliated with a over priced body shop or was spoon-fed arrogance when they where growing up. I would hire this guy.

In my personal opinion, Gerald can make a junkyard car look brand new.
We need more masters that are perfectionist! Gerald went over the entire car and fixed all imperfections he could find to make the final result be a showroom finish. Incredible Work Gerald; this a true skill set you possess!

I do remember seeing this back this when it only had a couple million views that you mentioned you got his permission and blessing to "hover and film him working." I’ve watched a lot of vids on here, this is one of the best. Props to Gerald for doing it under watchful eyes. Really appreciate a guy out there hustling to make living In a low overhead way and passing along the savings to the paying customer.
I've not only painted them (far to many to remember) but I've also won awards in car shows with ones I've painted too. I just wanted to add... this guy did a bang up job. I do hope you paid him extra for the education cause... well... teachers get paid you know. And not only did he explain every step but he also gave you a copy of the entire inventory of products that he uses and that is an education in and of itself.
I don't know many body people that would enjoy having a camera follow them around as there messaging a body smooth. This is a very timely and patient job.
Looked like a decent job to me, he did great even though he didn't have a multitude of tools, most insulting comments I've seen here are not needed, some people can't admit that they can be topped by a mobile repair, this kid did as good as some professional shops I know and even some local dealership hacks that call themselves body/paint facilities. I'd hire the kid at my shop!
decent sounds about right, the lack of blending into the door bugs me as I can see the color shift between panels at the end, but it's also a Matrix and there bumpers rarely matched there fenders so I guess it doesn't matter much given the crap quality control from the factory.

KiD, clearly you are blind, compare the quarter to the passenger side rear door at 55:30 he didn't "blend" shit, he resprayed the quarter with the door and bumper taped off so there are sharp edges where the tone of the paint is a visibly different shade

As a welder I have to admit there isnt an amount of money you could pay me to get the right to stand there and grill me while I try to do the job you hired me for.

Gerald you have more patience than me I used to make my living as a body repair Tech and if a customer came into my work area and just started watching me I would put the tools down and take a break until the customer left. I dont believe I could do what you did here without tearing my hair out.

I see a lot of people putting this guy down. For $250 I wouldn't have even considered touching this but, this dude does it and he's mobile. He did an awesome job, especially being watched the entire time. There will always be haters!!! Gerald your awesome, good job!!!! I did body work for several years and Your are right. This Guy was very meticulous and spent hours sanding and resanding to get rid of minor imperfections. He spent alot of money in materials, He spent alot of time. He was in a less then friendly environment and did a far superior job then 99% of the best body shops in America. I salute you Gerald, You Are Awesome.. Way underpaid.. Awesome finished product.. Haters be hating!!!

Great job at showing all the steps in doing all these procedures. And the answers he gave pretty much sums up what and why ! No steps were skipped and everything was done properly.Thumbs up to the video and the bodyman!
This was an excellent video for the guys like me who like to learn and try it myself. Well done and very informative. Body shops have to charge more because of the expensive overhead. Gerald did a very good job and saved Martin a lot of money.
Overhead maybe, go look at owners house and see if they are mayink overhead or a killing.

I think Gerald has a little obsessive compulsive disorder in him.....lol. He does stuff over and over and it is so good to watch him perfect his trade and even go the extra mile. There has to be attention to detail in every step. If not you can see the imperfections.

I don't even know how I ended up on this video, but I have to say this guy is awesome for doing this all outdoor with bugs and wind. That guy earned whatever you paid him. Excellent job!!! I have done bodywork and painting for myself and friends and family in the past. It is a rewarding job to do if you have the patience and skill. I found it rewarding to see a vehicle go from rags to riches before my eyes. 98% of the job is all prep work and the rest is actually squirting the paint which is a whole nother skill set. You really have to know your products and how to use it to spray on so you get it to flow to a nice smooth finish and not to have that "orange peel" finish.
i wouldn't have the patience to have someone hanging over my shoulder asking me questions like this. I hope he charged enough to buff and polish this guys car as well as refinish his headlights which wouldn't be part of the original repair he was there for. Detailing this car is not part of the job for repairing the dent.
You would NEVER get this kind of service from a body shop without having to pay through the nose for this kind of repair.
This is the kind of service you would have received about 40 years ago.

Watched this video and i'm really impressed. Gerald you a truly a master at your craft. The lengths some artisans have to go through to bring home a paycheck.
This is a guy that isn't a "pro". But, knows what he's doing. He's clearly been doing it for a long while, and knows works and what doesn't. He works for himself. He doesn't punch in and punch out at a shop. He doesn't say "Oh, I have the car for 3 days. I can finish it tomorrow, or the day after. I can bleed this job for X amount of hours".
He did a bunch of stuff that I , personally, wouldn't have done. But, client is happy (it's been about a year). Job is holding up. I don't get all the hate.

I have three cousins that I know of, that have body shops in New Mexico. Most body repair artist have a talent. Gerald showed his talent, by first going mobile, second charging less, and going all out on polishing every aspect. This is because he enjoys giving a break from his heart and because of less overhead. It is always good to see one human being helping another human being, especially in our turmoil days here on Global Earth: 2023 and hopefully our world will go on further and safely. Sir, for making this video, at first I just thought you were being nosey, but you just wanted to share and I personally learned a lot, even though I am 72 years old, today. Here is an update to all those critics out there: This job is now several years old (the job was done on Oct 16, 2015), and it still looks absolutely perfect!! Gerald did an awesome job … and NO! he didn’t use Bondo, even though that’s what it may have looked like. And concerning the criticism about the wet-sanding - that is not a problem at all if you let it dry properly before continuing to the next step. As for the costs: Yes, I saved a ton of money and that was my objective for an old car like that. Why on earth would I want to pay 4x the price for a fix-it-job on a car that old?? All that to say, I am still very happy with the work Gerald did and so far it is holding up very good.
what brand of body filler says you can wet sand it? I have been in doing body work for 12 years now not once have I seen a body filler saying you can wet sand it. I know that everyone has their own way but body filler absorbs moisture it would take a lot more than one day to dry it out. also why would you wet sand it in the first place I see no benefits in wet sanding body filler.
not being mean but maybe that is why he is mobile and don't work for a shop I don't know of any shop that would keep a guy that wet sands body filler. yes you may be happy with how the car turned out but also you should understand that body shops charge more cause they stand behind there work and it will last the life time of the car yes you saved money does that mean everyone should have there cars fixed outside with no filtration of the paint into the air there is reasons why shops charge more part of it being pollution control. also when I get insurance jobs that have had bumper repairs done like that it ends up costing more to fix cause the paint normally chips off in the area that was blended well prepping it for new paint half the time I see that it is more cost effective to get a new bumper rather than spend the time involved with fixing a parking lot repair. for your car it's your car if you are happy that's all that matters but please people don't wet sand filler if you want to learn how to do body work look up Eastwood or look up the brand of products you are using there is plenty of professional videos showing the proper way to do everything right here on RUclips
Here is a reply I got from Gerald regarding the wet sanding:
"It would be an opinion thing I would say. I don't have a problem with somebody wet sanding or not wet sanding. The potential issue is loss of adhesion of filler to the body panel caused from rust in between the
filler and the panel. But it would take for the water to be continually there.
I dry the filler before moving to the next step then I prime when dry. I understand their argument, but I have yet to have a problem doing it this way as opposed to the problem you get from dry sanding and all the dust that is created. The key is to make sure the filler is dried out before moving on. That's my opinion."
so how does he make sure it's dry all the way to the metal it absorbs moisture soak a sponge in water and without using anything but air from one side it would take days to get that water dry. wouldn't it just be easier to wash the car after it is primed not to judge people by how they do there work and the way they get there final results but I also haven't seen anyone fix dents before with a 5 dollar carpenter hammer why wouldn't he invest in real metal working hammers if that's his job. just saying if someone showed up to work on my car with roofing tools I wouldn't buy into anything his professional opinion tells you his tools speak for his professional opinion. I'm sticking with what manufacturers of body fillers say and that is dry sand only not trying to be negative just saying do it right or why do it at all. no reason to go against the manufacturer that has spent hundreds of thousands on research and development of there product cause you believe that they are wrong and wet sanding is better when you know for a fact that dry sanding gives you 0 possibility for the issues that not drying the filler out all the way would cause. just want people to know enough not to wet sand their own projects filler dust sucks wear a mask and clean up when you are done research products before using them and avoid issues 100 percent.
Of course the manufacturer would say 'no' to wet sanding because they don't want to get sued if somebody does wet sand and then has problems later because they didn't dry the thing properly. But, if in reality there never turns out to be problem then the whole issue realy is a moot point. And as I said, Gerald's work is now just about one year old and still looks perfect - so I couldn't care less. As far as I'm concerned Gerald dried everything just fine with a heat-gun and did a great job on my old car. Remember this is not a $300K Ferrari but a 2008 Matrix!
well its a first for me never seen anyone do it and I'm not a rookie in the auto body industry wet sanding all together has gone away it's a out dated practice only thing that gets wet sanded now days is clear coat and most people dry sand clear coat now really no benefit in wet sanding anything now days unless you want wet feet like I said I'm happy your job turned out it don't take much moisture at all to make the paint blister. I don't think the body filler industry has any concerns about being sued by people using the fillers wrong and getting poor results they are not liable for using it incorrect body filler has talc in it that is a moisture absorbing powder they don't want it being wet sanded for that reason same as being exposed to high humidity. only reason I'm saying it shouldn't be wet sanded is for other people that watch this you say you are happy with how the car turned out that is great don't mean everyone should wet sand filler no one should lol. I have seen it hundreds of times where people have body filler on there car and it gets hit again cracking the old filler leaving a small space for moisture to get to the filler when I sand it off there is rust everywhere under the filler I'm not saying his work didn't turn out good I was kinda shocked to see him using water base paint and not a cheap brand. I always here people say people do it wrong in the body shop world I am the first to admit that there is hundreds of different opinions on how to do body work and get good results I am not trying to argue with you on weather it's right or wrong it just simply should not be done and there is no benefit to it

Wow. Great body work vid. I stopped and made some popcorn, invited a few of my friends, two that are body men and enjoyed it almost to the end when it came to the paint and Finnish.
