More detail is that the vortex-like objects dance in a binary system; in this case we'll say the vortex-like objects are same size and far enough to do whatever they want. They will collide in one case, because 1 gained power and disrupted the orbit of the binery system, causing them to get closer to each other and eventually collide. This does not apply to Black Holes. Black Holes always merge when getting close to each other. In the other case is not so interesting; they will just circle around each other until they dance away, or just getting out of orbit and roaming around. The name of the effect came from Scientist Fujiwhara over 100 years ago.
A whirlpool (or maelstrom) is a body of rotating water produced by opposing currents or a current running into an obstacle. Small whirlpools form when a bath or a sink is draining. More powerful ones in seas or oceans may be termed maelstroms. Vortex is the proper term for a whirlpool that has a downdraft.

Just like low and high pressure atmospheric fronts, a whirlpool spinning clockwise (in the Northern Hemisphere) is where water is being added, 'adding pressure' to the whirlpool. Likewise, a counter-clockwise whirlpool is a 'low pressure' cyclone, from being drained or 'water removed'. Therefore, the first of the video showing the left-lock gate is a high-pressure vortex, adding water in...and the larger, second whirlpool, is a low-pressure vortex, where water is being pulled out. Seems that they are pumping water to the left-gate from the right-gate...not sure why, but since the lock isn't changing water elevation, it seems to be a balanced water transfer...maybe purging the lock, cleaning it???

What an interesting video! What theories do you hear about why they spin in opposite directions? Being in the Northern Hemisphere, Coriolis forces would only allow counterclockwise spin...
the flow of water and angular momentum. and those forces are primary for air. Even then sometimes you have a tornado or dust devil that spins clockwise. I had a toilet that flushed clockwise. I live in the U.S.
Yeah-- it does look like it's caused by the particular flow pattern of the water. That's cool to watch. And scary, in a primordial way. The toilet thing is just a manufacturer's feature, designed for efficiency or something.
As the videographer stated in his comments, this was filmed at a lock, not a river or ocean. The whirlpools are made because of the water being transferred through large under ground pipes to other parts of the lock. I use to live in Bama, and I've been where this was taped at. Usually there's a roar of the water that comes along with the whirlpools.
Raymond Lemieux That whole story many of us were told about whirlpools always going one way in the northern hemisphere and the opposite way in the southern isn't true. Water always takes the easiest path. One hole was probably started on one side of the river and as it started to speed up some of the water would hit against the bank of the river which would start a whirlpool. Same thing on the other side of the river, but the river bank is on the other side of the moving water which caused it to spin in the other direction. Kind of hard to explain with words, but drawing it on paper makes it clear.
If you take a camera and tie it to a rope or something and you hold the other end of the rope and throw the camera in the water wouldn't it pull you along because of how strong the whirlpool is? Just a question though (Sorry if my english is bad)
No it wont. If I am to explain it, well I would say, since the surface area of the camera and rope is too small, and mass is negligible, it wont probably make enough momentum to pull you off. Instead, put a huge bucket, a bit huge one tied to a rope, it may probably pull you into the whirl. I am not sure if the explanation is right, but hope you got the idea.
I found it fascinating that the three whirlpools combined to create one.
That is called the "Fujiwhara Effect"...it happens on typhoons and hurricanes too, if they are close enough that is

Yes.It will take you to the place where God is sitting😂😂
That just gave me the creepiest a world pool starts from small to big so cool
i have a sudden urge to jump in
wonder if anyone has fallen in that thing
imagine whirlpool surfing, just with out the death part
***** You mean the guy who drowned filming swimming in whirlpools?
Yes hold fucking shit that would be awesome
***** It is a matter of curiosity. Humans are curious, aren't they?
***** Indeed ! Curiosity can get you in trouble.
hi
hes standing on a lock for raising or lowering boats the water level between the locks are equalizing
a fresh but thrilling feel awakens my mind....
I have a question.. what happens if you swim near it? :D would you come out at the other side?
what are you on
When a dam releases water. 👌
How is it that the 2 whirlpools spin in opposition
Raymond Lemieux That whole story many of us were told about whirlpools always going one way in the northern hemisphere and the opposite way in the southern isn't true. Water always takes the easiest path. One hole was probably started on one side of the river and as it started to speed up some of the water would hit against the bank of the river which would start a whirlpool. Same thing on the other side of the river, but the river bank is on the other side of the moving water which caused it to spin in the other direction. Kind of hard to explain with words, but drawing it on paper makes it clear.
Alright understood Thanks for response
The most destructive force in the water, nothing can escape it, not even fish!
A underwater journey that begins, where everything ends!
It's just a whirlpool
Why are the 2 whirlpools rotating in different directions? I thought they all turn the same way in the same hemisphere
Is the whirlpool transferring water lowering the water level or is it just water moving in c basic circle
That looks dangerous.
Sludge Pump Hi-Power Beats
ELiTE_OpTiic nahhhhh its safe
So this just formed randomly while you were filming?
no the lock was filling for the next ship to pass
OMG, read the flippin story!
no,..he stirred it with a long stick to impress you,n get likes on youtube.
I notice one goes clockwise and the other anti-clockwise.
That's what the redcoats call counterclockwise.
Hythloday71 he means counter clockwise
Im shoreside now but used to ride tugboats and have been up north by boat. What lock is that
Notice several smaller whirpools rotating around in a center....just like multiple suction vortices in tornadoes and dust devils.
that shit looks scary as fuck
Who actually watched the whole 8min 37 seconds
Not me
Louise Shahhet me 😂
Anyone ever put a camera in there??
If you take a camera and tie it to a rope or something and you hold the other end of the rope and throw the camera in the water wouldn't it pull you along because of how strong the whirlpool is?
Just a question though
(Sorry if my english is bad)
Hey bass hunter you cute :)
If you' would swim in them, what would happen really?
Drowning most likely
A selfie stick may help with looking down the whirlpool
