    I really appreciate the review. I have the same chrono and just blew through a box of Nosler 150 grain ballistic tips on a new rifle I plan on hunting with in 3 weeks. 20” barrel I was averaging 2754 with advertised 2800. New barrel, so pretty impressive I thought. Can’t find them anywhere right now so I bought a couple boxes of the ones you just reviewed. Gonna go re zero with these at 100 and go see if I can hit a 6” gong at 300 with them. For the record the Nosler went 10-10. Thx again for a review I can relate to, truly helpful. The Nosler had a deviation of 13.8 on the second 10. Again new barrel, it was 25. something the first 10.

    I recently bought a Ruger SFAR in 308 and when looking at which ammo to go with, this Hornady Whitetail is what I selected. My reasoning is that if it works well for whitetail deer, it will certainly work for any two-legged attackers. No need to buy exotic so-called "Tactical" ammo. Price is among the cheapest for expanding bullet ammo too. Plus, it shoots good in my rifle. No negatives at all.

    Interlock is best described as an improved Core-Lokt design. They really are very good bullets for the money. They do well as a general purpose game bullet at a fairly reasonable price.

      I like to call them that myself. Never had one let me down. Only recovered maybe 1 or 2 out of prolly 30 whitetails taken with the interlock in various calibers. I use a lot of different bullets, but a good old cup and core bullet through the rib cage usually leads to a DRT situation in my experience. Keep impact velocity below 2950-3000 fps and it’s a deadly combination with most cup and core bullets.

    The Hornady Interlock is the best of the cup and core projectiles IMO...as long as you don't drive them too fast. Start them out at 2700-2800 fps and they work very well for normal range hunting.

      They are good, no doubt about that but I've had just as good results with the speer hotcore bullets. I think the speer holds together a little better due to being a poured core which gives it better jacket adhesion. Just the same I've never lost deer or pronghorn with a hornady bullet.

However, the copper FTX or ELX do hold up very well at all ranges. Hornady makes some very good ammo and reloading components. I reload only Hornady and Speer bullets.

    Recently got to test what a 175 grain sierra match king OTM .308 inch diameter projectile would do on Whitetail with an impact velocity of around 2750 FPS(quartering away shot at 194yards with a 300 Winchester magnum). The answer is a complete pass-through with fragmentation damaging a roughly 6 inch area on the far side ribs and a roughly three-quarter inch exit wound out the far side hide. I have some of this Hornady interlock 150 grain in a 30-06 and will likely be testing it in the upcoming days. I will let you know those results when I find out myself, though I have not yet chronographed that ammunition from my rifle.

      Why use a 300 WM 175gr 308 on a whitetail? It's like using a 120mm anti-tank round on a bicycle. Total overkill. A broadside or quartering towards would have resulted in 50% of the deer being red & black strawberry jello. You were lucky it was quartering away. Unless your quarry is an elk, a grizzly, a bison or in the next State, you dont need a 300WM 175gr.

  • @DonEmbrey
    @DonEmbrey 2 месяца назад

    With a 150 grain bullet you can match a 30-06. That’s the best you’re going to get in the comparison. If you want heavier bullets, you’re gonna need to go to the 30=06; which is the next step up, and is more like a long range round when the 308 is not at all, but that is only if you’re looking at bullet weight above 150 g. I love the 308. Most of my hunting is done with a 300 Winchester magnum. I have several boxes that I have loaded down to 308 velocity, which makes it fun to shoot and capable, but depending on where I’m hunting, I can change that range out to another four or 500 yards by putting in a standard 300 Win Mag. I like my light loads in 308velocities best though. They don’t kick much and just more pleasant to shoot a thing. I love about my 300 win mag as I can load it down to 3030 Winchester, or even 30 Carbine.. then I can load it to be a 1500 yard monster. For those of you who do not reload your own ammunition, I would highly suggest you do so, it’s a lot of fun, and the opportunities are endless and how you want to make your ammunition work.

    • @masonoutdoors_masonleather

      Clean with alcohol, spray 3 layers of base coat (Krylon Fusion paint), use nylon netting as a stencil, it can be found on Amazon, stretch it tight over the stock securing it however you want (I use tiny zip ties) basically creating a “sock” for the stock, then spray your “scales” coat in whatever pattern you want (stripes or everywhere, whatever), 1 coat only for the scales, let dry then remove the netting, spray 3 coats of Satin Clear, done. Allow 24 hours of dry time between every coat, so it’ll take about a week total, if you go faster it won’t be nearly as durable. … all paint is Krylon Fusion… I hang the stock horizontally with string by the swivel studs to paint it, I hang it from a 2x4 stuck through a ladder.

    I’ll admit, it doesn’t get much better than that for budget .308 for 350 and in but I’d like to see a little less penetration and a bit more or a blade or star shape instead of a circle because they create more cutting equaling tearing which equals more damage. Example- Federal Fusion. Those petals are what it’s lacking but great performance. Good job Hornady 👍🏼
    I’d still use Fusion

    I do have a kinda odd question. Is the 165 bullet profile a boat tail? The base view you provide is a good idea. The 150 appears to be obviously a flat base but the 165 doesn't look the same. Maybe an optical illusion or camera angle thing. Thank you again.

    I'd like to see you. Try some 140 and 130 grain solid Copper rounds. I feel that the monolithic copper bullets are the future. You should do some experimenting with them. Would really like to see the results

    I would think that 165's might not have as much wind deflection but at the same time at 200+ probably a more noticeable amount of drop also the kinetic energy numbers would probably flip to the 165 at longer distances to a point maybe as far as 250 till 300/400 where that faster projectile is able to carry further before the drop really takes hold. There is always a trade off with any caliber. That 308 out of a 22" barrel I don't think there's you'll ever see a big difference when the weights are this close. Like he said which ever your rifle likes best will be best. Now I"ld like to see how those numbers would change if jumped up to 178 grain like the ELD-X Polymer Tip. I really like the way they've preformed but I'm using much shorter barrels for a 308's. one 18.5" and the other a 16" scout. I also like the federal varmint & predator 130 grain jhp out of the scout around the ranch. Stops coyotes dead in their tracks and I still get a good pelt.
