These custom dolls are really cute! Especially the brunette with the faded red lips :) I honestly don't have a problem with these dolls, because I don't feel like they impact on my personal hobby. I collect stock Blythe dolls, and so customs and fakes really don't change how I experience Blythe, and I know they give a lot of people (who maybe want a Blythe but can't afford stock prices) a lot of joy. People can buy what they want, I don't like policing people's hobbies or interests. I also find the whole anti-recast debate so damaging and negative. I probably wouldn't personally buy a fake or recast doll, but if other people want to spend their own money on a knock off, they are fully in their right to do so! They're not forcing me to buy something I don't want, they're just trying to enjoy their own personal doll hobby. It honestly smacks of elitism to me and I hate that- why should only people with money be able to play with dolls?? I really hope that all that BJD recast nonsense doesn't find its way into the Blythe hobby. I love how accepting this community can be.
starbrights90 Yes! This! 100%! I’ve been considering re-entering the bjd hobby and wouldn’t personally purchase a recast, so it’s made me wonder why I purchase fake blythes. I’m uncomfortable with these ones in particular as they potentially could be recasts of someone’s work. You’re so right about the community as well! No one is excluded, as long as you love Blythe you’re welcome ☺️ Thank you so much for this comment, you’ve summed it all up perfectly
To me it's a better option to customize since you can create much freely and customising the original dolls is no longer original look since you changing what originally there. Original dolls should be kept as they are rather than being customize cause you pay for the original look . if this dolls are bought In a very high price after being customize by the artist is their right to charge that high. Cause the customers is paying for the artist original work, design and customising and not the doll itself so of course it's expensive doesn't matter what doll the artists used it's still their original work which should be appreciated and not the doll they used .that is my opinion.
I bought one before watching this video. Honestly with their prices (and my country's weak currency) it never crossed my mind they're fakes. Heck, I bought mine on clearance and even then she cost a good chunk of money. I looked up real Blythe prices and they cost about a month's wage where I am from. Of course I never expected my doll to be a Blythe, they're ICY dolls with slight differences (eg. different shaped eyes, smaller eye chip etc). Now I'm not too familiar with Blythe dolls, but with ICY dolls they're usually very customised by serious collectors, with some even using unique (and expensive) face plates. They look amazing! Try google image "icy doll custom", there's some fantastic work there. So my point is I'm not against these "fake" dolls. I think they're a great way to reach a greater audience, especially the ones that can't afford Blythes. As for why I finally succumbed to buying a large head doll? Well many years ago a photographer published a book using Blythes as her models, IIRC that kick started the doll's fame. So thanks to the wonders of online shopping, I'm finally able to own one too and hopefully follow after that photographer's footsteps. I like how their eyes can change, so much posing possibilities!
Thank you for sharing your story! You're right, Blythes are very expensive and a luxury. Fakes are a great option for various reasons just like Icy dolls (as you mentioned) and have allowed the community/hobby to expand and grow. And yes! If the book you are speaking of is 'This Is Blythe' by Gina Garan, it is what brought Blythe back to production 😍 They are such unique and fun dolls, I'm so happy to hear of your love for Blythe! Congratulations on your doll and please feel free to share your Instagram page for us to see your Blythe photos ❤️
@@plasticdays I'm still very new to doll collecting and very busy IRL unfortunately so no Instagram page yet! Here's some photos of my doll though, she just arrived last weekend
I think some Aliexpress sellers do hand customise dolls. Maybe this faceplate is a recast of one of their own, which they then sold to other vendors to sell? Hope that made sense!
Tizzas 123 I hope so! There was someone recasting their own dolls on Etsy that looked very similar to these, I wonder if she sold her casts to these vendors.
I LOVE Blythe dolls but cute never afford a real one. I used to have one but had to sell her. I think your dolls are cute esp the one with the eyebrows. I just love Blythe's sweet face they make me happy. I kept some of my clothes and shoes and the things I made but I would buy one of these if I had the money. I look for real dolls ask the time in thrift stores but never found one. Yet. 🦊
meezergurl the real ones are just getting more and more expensive too ☹️ I wish they offered more affordable dolls like they used to - and I think that’s another reason why fakes have become so popular! I hope you can have a Blythe again soon, the community is very welcoming whether you have a real or fake ❤️
I wouldn't buy a real blythe to expensive and not cute shinny faces(YUCK) stiff arms and legs. But the two factory are very cute you can light sand and paint to make your own look. LOVE THEM...
I’ve seen listing where there were fully customized faces that were hand painted in aliexpress I thought it was cool but weird bc how can someone be that determined to finish so many face ups?
Ooh I’ve seen those too! I wonder if they make them to order? It would be interesting to see if you actually get the doll they show in their pics, they look so cute!
Lustful that would be a good low-budget option for people wanting to buy a ooak doll! I don’t think anyone could complain as long as it’s honest and fair 😊
plasticdays I’m saving up for it rn actually! And I just followed your Instagram and visited your Etsy, I might get side tracked and buy your doll that’s for sale instead of the aliexpress one haha!
I can’t afford a custom doll as much as I would like to have one. I have bought one (which my husband refuses to let me have until Xmas). I used to be so creative, constantly making all sorts of stuff, but illness has robbed me of that. I’m hoping my doll, one with wild red curls, will give me the opportunity to be creative taking photos of her, maybe trying to make her stuff if I can...but this is all I can afford and at that it’s as a Xmas gift. I am as conflicted about purchasing one of these as I am about buying mass produced clothes. If I had the money I’d shop ethically. Instead, I try to shop less and have something as a treat. Sorry, this is long and rambling and my head isn’t fully working so I’ll stop. I like them. I will love mine.
Nettie Thomson I’m sorry about your illness, and sorry that you have to wait so long to have your doll! I can see how these are an affordable option, and your comparison to fast fashion is great - I think a lot of people (including myself) would oversee that. I own fake blythes and generally am accepting of them, but I’ve begun to confuse myself by thinking that I would never buy a counterfeit bag or recasted doll, so why do I accept these? At the end of the day, if an owner loves their doll I’m not one to complain! Thank you for taking the time to write your comment. Would love to see your dolly photos when the time comes 😊
These are honestly fake? We know what we are buying. Much counterfeit stuff is sold pretending to be the real thing? We do what we can. And your dolls are beautiful x
Nettie Thomson as they’re not manufactured by Takara, I would consider them fake. Most of the fake dolls claim to be ‘factory dolls’ - many years ago there was a sudden influx of Blythes made from authentic parts that were either discarded or stolen from the official manufacturer. Those dolls are now rare, and the ones we see today are actually just counterfeits. The dolls in this video sit strangely with me as I worry that they have been casted from someone’s hand-customised doll without permission. The Blythe community are a bit strange when it comes to fakes, it’s one of the few hobbies that are accepting of non-authentic items. It’s great that the community is so welcoming and accepting! I hope this is somewhat informative 🙂
The concern I raise in this video centres around this particular type of fake, which is marketed as a "custom" when in fact, it is a mass-produced doll made from a cast of someones original work. I am unable to find any information on the original doll and can not confirm if it was made for this purpose, was sold with permission, or if these are stolen 'recasts'. Please feel free to comment or message me if you have further information or want to chat ☺️
Some people say that factory Blythe dolls are not fakes or recasts. I also read an article that they are blythe dolls that are made with real and original doll parts combined with custom limbs which makes them real blythes that are made with real Blythe parts. I don't know if that makes sense. Maybe they just use the word "custom," so they won't get sued. I'm still learning about these factory blythe dolls because I want to customize them.
Rin Doll Hi! The factory dolls made with real parts is true, but they only existed for a short time (~5-10months) roughly 10 years ago. Takara moved factories and the factory dolls came to a stop. They’re now extremely rare and hard to come by. The ‘factory’ dolls you see now are all fakes, named ‘factory’ probably to avoid being sued, avoid their listings being taken down, and to cause confusion. The ones in this video are most likely labelled as ‘custom’ because they’ve been altered to resemble ooak custom dolls rather than the plain Blythe appearance. Wheww I hope that helped! It’s all very confusing 😣
There is no moral issue for buying the copies, because that’s all they are, they’re only fakes if they are sold as genuine Takara dolls, so the only moral issue is with the seller. Children love these dolls, the jointed clones are much more playable for children and at a price you can let them play.
I wish I had the money and mental capacity to be hyper ethical about dolls but I don't, not at the moment anyways. Also, I don't like paying for brand name rather than just the product but I guess that can't really be escaped.
Anni Kalapudas I’d say most collectors in the Blythe community don’t make a fuss about it, even Tamara themselves don’t seem to care all that much. I’m not sure if I agree with your brand name statement - I personally see it more as buying Abibas (a counterfeit) instead of Adidas - but it is something I hadn’t considered. Honestly as much rambling as I’ve done, it’s more of a conversation than a concern. Thanks for sharing!

Huni Buni no problem at all! My issue is with dishonesty. I think these are an efficient and great bases to work with, and can make great dolls. Unfortunately there have been some individuals reselling these dolls claiming they are ooak and carved by them with prices of $500 USD +
Are they making these dolls in an effort to deceive people? To me, they look different from the "real" Blythes. No shiny face or candy color eyes. No one would think its a Takara Blythe. I love the way they look.
I don't think I could own one. As a doll collector who mainly has bjds and custom blythes I wouldn't feel comfortable with it. The real issue I see with the fake custom dolls is that they are taking a mold of another artists one of a kind work and then selling it. I just wouldn't want to own a copy of someone's custom when I can instead save up for a really nice doll someone cared about making.
Hills Mo that’s exactly my issue with these particular dolls. ‘Normal’ fakes are one thing, but these ones are a whole different conversation. Hoping that the original doll was casted with permission but we may never know.
I personally checked lots of informations online from websites and the factory shop, and got into a group with the factory people promoting this new faceplate about 2-3 years ago. the customizer is from the group of factory doll people, who firstly calved this face. The first edition was hand painted by that creator and it was literally 5 min per faceplate to color. And they print eyebrow when nothing else is on. I saw these a lot today even on eBay, and I think right now they put this into a factory. Still not large amount, but the person who did the faceplate is insider.
