  • A favorite hymn composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams with text by Caroline Maria Noel (1817-1877). The descant was written in 1994 by Stephen Schmall. Conducted by Stephen Schmall in May 1995.
    This hymn is #86 in the Green Hymnal (1966 Benziger).

    Absolutely my favorite version of this gorgeous hymn! No one beats Ralph Vaughan Williams, and this is a splendid choral performance!

    I became acquainted with this tune when I was still an atheist. On a CD of being played on the Bok Tower campanile. Loved it even then. Twenty-two and a half years believing it's quite wonderful. VERY nice job. Thanks.

    Great recording, but the fade in of the lyrics is too slow for singing along.
