Yeah it's about a kid who's teased and not as fortunate as the "other kids with the pumped up kicks." The part where it says dad's coming home with a surprise....yeeahh pretty sure the surprise isn't something pleasant. Guy's got a crappy life & jerk family so he's shootin'. I personally find it amazing that this is the general idea yet it sounds so happy.

This songs about robbie hawkin who brought a gun to a mall and shot 9 people including himself after his parents neglecting furthermore kicking him out, his dad would beat him when he was little. wrote a note to family/friends, brought a revolver to the mall. "He'll look around the room" he went to the 3rd floor and shot randomly. "He wont tell you his plan" only told them in the note saying he will become famous and the cowboy stuff means he's having fun with the idea of how cool it will be.

This song is not about Robert Hawkins of the Westroads Mall shooting in Omaha. Robert was long estranged from his parents and lived with friends. The people he chose to open fire on were mostly middle-aged people over 40's with only Maggie Web (24) remotely close to his age (19). Robert also wasn't a loner, which the cowboy characteristics refer to (six shooter, cigarette, etc). This song is about isolation and a kid losing it and Foster is recalling the killer's perspective.

So the song tells about story of a kid which one day was walking around his house before school, after school there was no one in the house, and then he remembered this box which he found, in this box there was a lot of his dad military accesory and most importantly, a gun, kid wanted a kicks (those shoes), and he went to school next day and he brought a gun, and he singed psychotically "all the other kids with the pumped up kicks, you better run, better run, outrun my gun" after that, he shot 2 teachers and 8 students, there was a police but there was none of the evidence, after school he had a dinner, and then his parents asked him "what did you did at school" and then, he remembered what happend, and then he singed this "all the other kids, with the pumped up kick, you better run, better run, faster than my bullet", then he first shot his dad, then a mother, and his brother said "i wont tell anyone about this" he understood and locked him in a closet, the next day a police surrounded his house, and then he singed it again - after that, a story about him vanished.

Honestly I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought Greg was just a kid who would grow up to be a school shooter. He's white, awkward, etc.
It's about a kid basically losing his mind and plotting revenge. Mark Foster wrote this song when he began to read about the growing of metal illness in teenagers. The song was written as a way to create ongoing dialogue for an issue that was being talked about, but when it came to government intervention, was largely being ignored.
The song was then pulled from the airwaves after the Sand Hook Elementary shooting. Mark agreed to pull the track out of respect for the victims, adding that he wrote the song about the growing trend of mental illness among teenagers in a bid to create a conversation about the need for change.

I read in an interview that the singer would get depressed when he played this song because hed see kids smiling and making gun motions with their hands, they didnt realize what they were singing and didnt understand the song.
