I would rather pay 32 million for a Castle in Scotland than 32 million for a high-rise penthouse in NY.
Yessssss!
100 percent
And on top of that - we can reach the peace, tranquility and fun for far less than 32 million. It is about the environment and its vibes. (Lived in LA and escaped elsewhere...)
you wont be saying that in 30 years with the coastal erosion dragging the castle into the sea. Google north sea coastal erosion.

"Is there a bar in every single room?" It's Scotland.
“Is there a bar in every room?” Well, what’s wrong with that? 😅😊😂

@@ItsJps another beautiful home in Scotland 🏴

5:15 "is there a bar in every single room?" I found myself shouting out loud (in an otherwise empty house) "IT'S SCOTLAND!!"😄
This estate is a huge business with hunting fishing weddings so many opportunities. what a beautiful place to wake up to every morning.
In Scotland we have the right to roam laws meaning we can walk freely in private land.
In Ireland there are very few places were the public can walk
To American viewers - this is just an average UK home! My property is twice this size and I'm just an office cleaner!
lol!
@@WooHooCrossStitch your an office cleaner you lucky bas##rd ,you must be swimming in money , I’m just lowly retired toilet bowl cleaner 😢 and all I can afford is a sea view mansion with only 8 bedrooms 😢😢
😄
This is like my Castle, it's ok, but i let my Butler use it so he's close to the castle i actually live in.
Too true, too true...
DAILY MAIL - 21 JULY 2023: "The stepfather of the Earl of Pembroke shot himself in the head at one of Britain's most famous country homes due to 'severe financial pressures' and left notes saying he was 'taking the coward's way out', an inquest has heard.
Stuart Wyndham Murray Threipland left notes at Wilton House, a 14,000-acre Palladian estate near Salisbury, Wiltshire, saying he 'couldn't forgive himself' for the 'mess' he had created.
The inquest at Salisbury Coroner's Court heard that he felt he was 'losing control' and that he had been experiencing 'significant anxiety'.
His death at Wilton House came the same day his estate and 13-bedroom castle at Dunbeath, in Scotland, was put on the market for £25million."
Wow 😢 As a working class person. I feel sorry for rich people who inherit these castles which have been in the family for centuries. The pressure to preserve it and keep it running for the next generation is immense 😢 You are born with no choice in life than to work to earn money to keep the place running. Most people WANT to earn millions. These people HAVE to earn millions. To me that is a ball and chain. You don't want to be the person in centuries of ancestors to screw up.
@@timtreefrog9646 The present day Dunbeath castle & estate was not inherited after being in any family for centuries, but actually purchased as recently as 1997 by the lately deceased Stuart Wyndham Murray-Threipland and his wife, who is the mother of William Alexander Sidney Herbert, 18th Earl of Pembroke; the Earl's stepfather being the aforesaid late Mr Murray- Threipland.
The formerly inherited castle finally changed hands in 1945 after 325 years of continuous occupation by the Sinclair Family, when the castle was sold to an untitled private citizen. It was privately sold again in 1967, & again in 1976, before it was sold in 1997 to the unfortunate Mr Murray- Threipland. Your surprising empathy for the "hard done to" mega rich is commendable as a human being, albeit perhaps misplaced, considering that for one individual or family to be so very rich & living in luxury, hundreds of thousands or even millions of others have to be poor & living in the gutter... It's nothing personal of course, just the market driven distribution of resources according to basic rules of economics. Ho-hum.
The old Aga in the kitchen is quite a modern model! The "Island" is in fact a table!! Highway 89? We don't have highways, and which bit is described as "downtown"? They're hamlets or maybe villages!
My father and uncle worked there in the late 40s, when they were in their teens. They seemed to have fond memories from working there.
Everybody would love this room (except the cleaner lol). the price is one thing but paying for the staff and upkeep is another.
It's Scotland, bars in each room are the law 😂
Yes, multiple bars in each room.
These days a sharps box too.
Owning the castle is one thing, maintaining the castle and running all the land efficiently is another.
Yes, you'll probably need another £32m.
Wow, you could have a hunting, fishing, camping and hiking holiday and not even have to set foot off your own land. What a stunning location 👍👍
Lots of open fires, but no mention of other heating. I bet it is actually extremely drafty and freezing in winter! 😮
It has 4 air source heat pumps according to the blurb. Which is why you also need open fires. 😉
Our wee country is sooooo beautiful. Btw friend, close to 100k subs, well done! Love from Scotland!
Visited Dunbeath Castle once;historically it is a Clan Sinclair castle and owed by senior branches, from the 15th century, down to just after the end of the 2nd World War ! 👌👍
P.S. at the other end of the county,is located former-Sinclair owned, but now the royal Castle of Mey(Barrogill),bought by the HM the Queen Mother,Queen Elizabeth in 1953 and restored/maintained.
Yeah, I doubt you are directly related.
It's not 25 million pounds; it's actually £28 million, considering there is a £3 million stamp duty to be added on top of it.Actually, that would be 36 to 37 million dollars. No, you do not have exclusive rights to that land. In Scotland, the right to roam allows the general public to camp on your land, walk across it, and there's nothing you can do about it. If you try to stop them, you could be prosecuted. The former owners discovered that erecting fences and gates to prevent public access to the beach led to prosecution and fines. Considering the property was sold about six weeks ago, from an American perspective, it may not seem like a great deal, given the common American stance on private land and public access.
The Right to Roam also has some exceptions as to where people can Roam such as private gardens, property with farm buildings; schools; etc located on it. People may also not shoot or fish on someone else’s land without the owners permission so it’s not quite the free for all that folks may think it is. Also Dunbeath Castle hasn’t sold yet. According to Savills website it’s “under offer”.
@@sknox1394 He's right about the beach, though. There is no such thing as a "private beach" in the UK.
@@petretepner8027 Yeah he is correct on that aspect.
Not much different in England and Wales. Was ok until the Instagram me me me generation who think they can camp, litter, drone film and and shit anywhere.
@@sknox1394 Exactly. You have to be careful how you interpret "Right to roam."
It is under offer. It's got tragic story behind it's sale. What a beautiful place but maybe a bit isolated!
Got a spare $32,000,000, JPS? I have visited and enjoyed the stunning gardens shown in the film. Actually there are several other castles in the far north of Scotland. Check out Dunrobin Castle in Golspie (a real Disney style castle), and the Castle of Mey on the north coast, previously owned by the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and now a home where King Charles visits once a year. Some of us don't mind the remote location!
I can confirm the gardens are gorgeous and the head gardener is a top guy! 👍🏻
Can you imagine the heating bills? 😮
JP, have you watched the film 'Local Hero' ? It's an amusing picture of a 'typical' Scottish coastal village ! 😄
OMG that little garden bit under the tree tunnel, i'd love to sleep under that in the summer in a hammock or just a sleeping bag,wow
might get a rude awakening though.
I’m from Edinburgh and spent my childhood there through the schools holidays in the summer, my relatives live in dunbeath and it’s a an amazing place particularly for a child.
Go up every November to visit cousins, cousin Mac and his wife work within the estate and two years ago we got the opportunity to be allowed in castle and it is as beautiful as they say, we got to go on roof and views from there are unbelievable. Also in Scotland there is the right to roam nearly anywhere so long as property isn’t damaged.
Joel as a Real Estate Agent could be quite entertaining
Owner died from a gunshot wound on the day it went up for sale.
That looks lovely but imagine the heating bills (it's cold up there)! BTW I doubt that the county took its name from the earl. The other way round in fact. The name Caithness comes from an ancient Pictish tribal name 'Cat' or 'Cath'. People named Kieth, McKeith or MacHeath (including some of my ancestors) are likely to have originated there.
If you can afford to buy this place then you can afford the heating bills.
"Is there a bar in every room?" Remember, it WAS built by a Scots aristocrat. As for the gardens though, remember that even though there are likely close to 19hrs of dark at the Winter Solstice and the place is on Scotland's NE coast, the Gulf Stream still isn't too far off so you might be surprised what'll grow there.
I don't think you could avoid commercialising parts of the estate, as the cost of the large number of people required to maintain it must be colossal. It also opens up the land for more people to experience which is always a good thing.
5:17 First of all, it’s Scotland. Second of all, posh people don’t need a reason to drink.
Working class Scots especially need no excuse.
Just posh people?
Joel you are going to need more subscribers!
😂😂😂 Gonna have to get those Patreon numbers WWWAAAYYY up! 😂😂
I cycled through Dunbeath in 1978 when i cycled from Land's end to John O' Groats . . fabulous area but we had to make sure we had everything we needed as we could go days without seeing a person or a shop. Slept in an old bus shelter one night because we couldn't reach a youth hostel lolllllll
I live in the Highlands, I wouldn't live anywhere else, so lucky xxx
It's real, I live near it and it's a fantastic place to be. Only visited the castle gardens (by appointment). The gardeners maintain them to a fabulous standard.
I would imagine that an army of maids/servants would be needed to look after this Castle for cooking meals and cleaning every where, plus maintenance crews and window washers and gardeners for inside and outside the Castle, so probably a fortune need to take care of the place....
As long as it is not purchased by the wrong people who will build a theme park or use it to build flats on it Scotland looks this way for a reason preserving the land and in Scotland the people have the freedom to roam the land
Hi Joel , I enjoyed watching this beautiful video (pierre)
In the mid 70's myself and two other 15 year olds went hiking on the Dava moor in Morayshire, Scotland for an Expedition section of a Duke of Edinburgh Award and walked for three days and did not see another person and only heard one car during one of the nights. 😊💚
Lets just take a moment to say a prayer for the cleaner and the gardener😁
I think the words cleaner and gardener would be many t imes plural. A lot of money has been spent, the place looks in tip top condition. beautiful
@@ollielowe7534 I’d be surprised, staff are pretty difficult to find up there.
5:15 of course there's a bar in every single room, it's Scotland 😂
They have a bar in every room....................The Scots really like a wee dram of Whiskey!
I'm seriously considering buying it. I just need my mortgage to be approved first
One of the most amazing properties I've ever seen!!
I love that line of yours, Joel: "You'd have to have a lot of people over to get the most out of it." The only reason I'd ever want to be rich is so I could do just that with friends and family.
Simply magnificent & thanks for posting this Joel 👍👍👍
Go for it JP🏦
Did you notice the difference between the architectural features of a Scottish castle and those of English castles? - (immediately apparent).
These differences resulted from the fact that Scotland was a different nation until the Act of Union in 1706.
And by that era, such defensive architecture was no longer necessary, so history buffs then have their eyes trained on manor houses and palaces (although the latter is more a feature south of the border).
This is a very good point. Wales and England have those imposing fortresses, and the Scottish equivalents, like Stirling, Edinburgh and Dumbarton, look quaint in comparison. But then these were built during the time in Scotland when sieges did happen. Then the Baronial style castles are just highly stylised mansions essentially (like this one).
@@francisedward8713 well spotted.
Aldo, in historic times, the Scots were influenced by the French - to some extent it was their way of telling the English "your enemies are our friends".
Yep,Dunbeath is properly a 'fortified tower house' rather than a castle.
@@user-gt2ud2gw9e Aye, the Auld Alliance! Alas, just think, we could have a Conwy or Caernarfon perched above the rugged coast of a Scottish isle. Or an English Cotswolds-style village hidden among the dramatic scenery - which would be amazing. Another reason to hate those Frenchies 🙄 (jk). I don’t find the Baronial castles and such all that impressive, to be honest. They kind of remind me of those McMansions in American suburbs that add decorative towers to look more “European” and old world.
Is this also why England’s cathedrals are also more impressive, or is this for another reason? I was scratching my head to think of a Scottish equivalent of Salisbury, or Canterbury, Lincoln, Durham, Ely, York, Winchester, etc etc etc and could come up with nowt. Hmm. Even considering historical population differences. BTW, I am not shitting on Scotland - I love the country and it has a completely different vibe to England. Edit: ironically, it’s because of the Normans, right? I just looked it up. Hmmm.
It's now under offer.
Hello from England. I just looked the castle up on Seville's website. Looks like it is sold, subject to contract..
-Honey, I´m cutting the lawn. See you in a week!
Let’s expand our repertoire of references beyond Harry Potter.
Ohhhh!
You mean Braveheart.
Just checked and it's still for sale but 'Under Offer'. Tonight's Euromillions lottery jackpot is £33 million so this could be mine in a few weeks if my 1 in 140 million chance of the jackpot pays off.
I don't think that would leave you enough to pay for the upkeep.
That place kinda reminds me of the Biltmore House in Asheville (NC.)
Dunbeeth is about a 20-minute drive from me. I've never actually been to the castle, though.
Absolutely stunning location and great video. However, after seeing 'The Shining' a few times, winters might be a tad unnerving.
Originally all of the all that land would have had trees on. Rewilding needs to happen.
Maybe near the coast but as u go in land it’s famous for its peat bogs, it’s part of the flow country which is thousands of years old.
The trees outside the garden walls weren't that lush . It's not that far from Orkney which isn't a tree paradise. They used to joke they took them inside at night.
After watching loads of your videos over the years I can always tell when youre enjoying something; You stay very quiet and hardly pause! lol Next video from Dunbeath will be you sat in the library next to the log fire with a single malt whiskey in hand!!!😂😂😂
Bravo for Glen Coe and Oban. Did you go for the tour of the distillery?
Wow wow wow, that was truly excellent 🎉
Now contrast that with NYC, LA, etc properties going for more and have far less. Stunning!
Hello Joel. Where I stayed sometimes in Cornwall has been made into a set of holiday homes from the former houses of the estate workers. The estate house has a bar, pool and luxury flats.
Not on this scale, but it must bring in a lot more than when it was a rural estate.
Get saving Joel. One day?
Caithness is very isolated. You would probably need a helicopter to get there for most of the winter!
Not true at all. Just drive up the A9. There’s surprisingly little snow at sea level on the east coast.
Lovely but I wonder with coastal erosion that castle is in a precarious position. I would hope the home comes with all (or at least most of) the furniture/art/books as I can only imagine the cost of furnishing it from scratch. You would need a big staff to maintain the gardens & lands (let alone doing the household chores) and hiring out fishing/hunting etc. Imagine it rains about 300 or more days a year there, so this video/ad was probably filmed at the height of summer lol
There was a Hindi film that was shot there. That’s why it looked familiar.
Watched in dunbeath and it’s silly but fun.
Great if you don't like summer
Looks like a gardening headache.
Not for the landscape gardening firm one would hire if one bought the property. They’d probably have a whale of a time doing work there.
You could pay more for a London town house!
Americans always seem to call the Sea the Ocean, they aren't the same thing.
After I win the lottery, that is...
Joel, down payment made on behalf of the Patreon gang!! Cheers, John
I were THIS close to nap but just felt so let down by the lack of a single malt distillery. Also note how they with ease do not mention the lack of a dungeon.
If you catch a salmon you are mostly expected to put it back these days.
This is in no way a castle, its a house...
The castle itself,is in a rather bleak, barren, windswept locale, and looks bereftand not a homely home, but a clear aristocratict home.but on the positive side, the walled garden, the landscape it is set in,is stunning and even the cliffs and bleakness have their wild Wuthering Heights beauty which i could lose myself in,hiking and birdwatching, and nature trekking... I'm also half imagining Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple to show up,and question the gathered guests about a heinous crime they are investigating
How the other half live, quite stunning.
As long as Donald Trump doesn’t get his hands on it, it may be preserved!
Highland's means whare the mountains are not North!
If I had silly money I would buy it and donate it to The National Trust for Scotland to prevent some rich twat trying to enforce trespass laws (which don't exist in Scotland in the same way as other countries). NTS would know how to keep it for everyone to enjoy. xxx
You'd need to donate a lot of money as well or NTS wouldn't touch it. They wouldn't entertain Dumfries House at all but thankfully King Charles stepped in and worked miracles for the Cumnock area but he had to pour money in at the start.
The owner was in financial difficulty, he took his life the day the property was put up for sale.
As anothe oligark is sorted. Was that a bed pan on the table on the left in the log gallery???
All that for the same price as a 3 bed flat in central London. I know where I would rather be- can you imagine Christmas there?!
you should consider doing some Philomena cunk reactions
Beautiful must go there one day.🏴🏴🏴
It’s currently under offer
If I had about 10M a year to spend on maintenance I would buy one of these
I wonder how much it costa per year to heat and maintain just the castle, then you have the gardens and land.
It's currently under offer.
I thought it was for the castle but it's not. Look at all the land that goes with it. It's awesome. Is it for sale?
I think something has just been added to Joel's christmas wish list.
Jps - You look more English than me, how is that possible
It sold for 25 million pounds. Sold in Feb.
According to Savills own site it’s “under offer” so not quite sold yet.
@@sknox1394 mustn’t have gone unconditional then.
That to me is not a castle. More a stately home. Would be interesting to have seen what it was like before it was remodeled. May have actually been a castle.
I'll take two.
Buy yourself a castle in Scotland, JPS. You deserve it!
you must take into account that in Europe there is a right, that you don't have in the USA, everyone can transit, enjoy nature, in any property; in our country crossing a cultivated field is not considered trespassing, punishable by being shot in the back, as in your country, indeed, if you shoot someone in the back who has also violated your own home you could have legal problems, and the passage and parking temporary in nature are a right. Private gardens are one thing, plots of land are another
I would love it if an American bought it and then seen tons of ramblers walking all over what a picture that would be, and not mentioned in the sales pitch
Knew to owned by an US millionaire Stanton Avery, who restored it,before being sold to a locally-connected gentry family the Threiplands who are putting it up for sale.
Yeah ,because there is no trespassing laws ... so no rushing out to confront strangers with your multitude of weapons .THIS IS MY PROPERTY ,GET OFF IT ! Nope ,sorry pal ,l'm Scottish I go where I like 😅
More of a hunting lodge on old castle foundations, but what does my poor Scottish arse know?
Only an American real estate agent would wander the moorland in a Brooks Bros suit, tie, and loafers!!
I'd skip around butt-naked for the commission.
He looks ridiculous.
Let me check if I've got some spare change in my pocket.
