Right? This is something that the Child who is doing the Parenting doesn't often think about because they're so distracted by everyone else's needs. We should ONLY have judges like that on the bench. These are the kind of men and women we should all aspire to be, intellectually and morally.

@@TimTheEnchanter0that's the biggest lie that I don't expect much else if you're American, I have seen otherwise, I say Americans because to the rest of the world Americans are seen as the most selfish people especially American children are seen to be brats and that's sad that the rest of the world sees that I have seen better I have seen it when I was growing up and was bedridden the older sibling taking care of her little sister and then another one that I knew of where the parents were the mother was a single mother because the father was never around and she was barely getting by in fact at one point she really could not manage and it was the other kids who got together the two oldest who got together and he came to the parents for the rest and it wasn't easy on them but they managed I was a 7 year old kid watching this from the outside looking in, when I was 12 they moved away. My parents did get letters from them, because my dad was kind of like their spiritual advisor and kind of like a social worker even though they weren't of our religion they looked at him like he was there preacher Man, I'm on my dad's degrees with a degree in social work so he was their social worker and help them get the things that they needed so that they could manage, going so far as to write to somebody he knew where they were moving to to get in contact with the social services there to help them out. The youngest kid we heard was going to college by that time I was already in my second or third of college by that time, my dad had found out that the two old siblings each had something they wanted to do and he got from the sponsors in the states what's the help of the social worker and he's contacts so that they could do the things they had wanted to do when the kids were in high school the younger ones. Their mother did fine she eventually remarried when they were ( the younger ones) where in highschool... It only works out because my dad knew that they weren't going to give up without a fight so to speak and he knew what it was like to grow up really fast because he was a survivor of World War II be his own parent as a young child. But it isn't the world we live in today at least it's not the America that I knew 35+ years ago. So maybe you're right maybe that's the way things are now and therefore why not just walk away you know what you're probably right the world is coming to crap let's just make it more crap. Me if there were going to be a comment that comes down and destroys the world I probably have a party because it would mean the end to the darkness.

And honestly if she had set them all to a foster home, none of them would have turned out the way they did (which was somewhat decent), theirs a point in the series, that you just can’t discipline teens who dont want to listen to their sister.
It would have been good for her to take liam but honestly by the time she left, all of them were adults any of them could take care of one child, she took care of 4-5 on her own.

But it does also show the reality of law and injustice. Neglect is a form of abuse but according to law it’s not abusive enough to be seen as illegal or harmful enough for legal punishment and it’s horrible that the world is like that.

Its crazy how i got from clips that put Fiona in a bad spotlight, where she gets kicked out the house, the drug incident with Liam. But then I run into clips like this and i can see why things spiral out of control. Everyone is at fault someway or another. (Haven't watched the show, now i am)

Scenes like this make her exit seem very weird. She moves away in season 9 when Liam is like 9 or 10 years old, and we never hear from her again. She abandons him after becoming his guardian, but is never brought up.

This is not actually the way it would happen. She is far too young she is unmarried and she is not in a stabilized employment. The children would absolutely be remanded to a respite foster care while the father was in AA. But the sister would probably get guardianship or consultation rights and be visiting them on a regular basis. Source: I used to be a foster parent.

Watching this the first time: Fiona did the right thing wanting to protect her siblings from Frank and foster care at the cost of having her own life.
Rewatching this after season 9: Fiona made a huge mistake sacrificing her life for those selfish, cruel, destructive, unappreciative brats and should’ve listened to this wise, caring and sensible judge!

Anyone who thinks Fiona should be perfect and not make any mistake is an idiot. She raised herself and her whole siblings single handedly. So obviously she isn't a perfect because she had not good role model or parents to raise her right. People only see her actions but look at how she was raised. She has not time to grow up well because she was too busy taking care of her siblings.

To all those saying Neglect is Abuse, the honest truth is not always. Some kids end up legally neglected but that's not because their parents don't love them. It's because their parents don't have the finances or the support they need to give them the basics. If a mother leaves her kids at home by themselves because she can't afford childcare but needs to work to afford rent and food for them she is seen by the law as being neglectful even though she had no other options.
Obviously this is not what is being represented in this show, but I need people to understand sometimes neglect is not about a lack of care from parents. Sometimes life just dogpules on vulnerable people

That’s where I’m at right now in my life. I have a 20 month old, no support system. I’m a registered nurse, but I can’t find anyone to help watch my son and daycares aren’t open for the times I need.
So we’re homeless, because if I leave my son alone and go to work, it’s neglect and I lose my son.
The world we live in disgusts me.
