I lost my cousin to suicide last year, he was 15 years old. I often think back to 13 Reasons Why and how much the show raises awareness. I am really thankful to this show, it explains every stage of grief and shows mental health problems aren't always visible. Every single life matters, every decision you make impacts another person, please just be kind

I've been seriously considering suicide for a few days. I was actually starting to plan it and then suddenly this video was recommended and it made me watch the first 2 seasons again, it made me realize that suicide will do nothing but move the pain on to someone else, seeing her parents struggle to cope, seeing someone like clay made me realize that some people may be worth living for and that even if I don't have those people in my life yet, they'll probably come along. I may be a mess now but maybe it's better to give myself time to heal. So this song may have actually saved me Edit: the comments here mean w lot to me, they really help me feel better. When this song plays after Clay gives the tapes to the counselor in season 1, it is something special. The look on Clay's face when he sees all the students walking past him and the sad expression of him looking down and onward is indescribable. You can sense his pain and regret with everything's that's happened up to that point. Great character and cinematography there.
i cant get over 13 reasons why .. i fucking cry every time i think of clay what he must have felt . This makes me feel like i never experienced true love n pain
i dont think the love clay feels towards hannah was true love because he looked very comfortable doing it with Sheri untill realizing maybe Sheri was pretending. I don't think someone who truly loves someone recently passed away, can get it over that quickly. But I do think he loved her. Just in a teenage shy boy way. And of course as a friend. That's why he got the lesson from it and run to Skye to be her friend because she needed it.

It didn’t change me since I was diagnosed with Bipolar and a lot of different (Privat) stuff I realised that this show is bullshit I am in a Psychiatrie for Teens (12-18) and there are a lot of people with Depression and a lot of people who wanna make (or even tried) making suicide and literally everyone hates this show because it doesn’t show real life and they hated it that people might think that 13 Reasons why is realistic

Sandi Ieraci I tried taking my own life as well, I was hesitant of watching the show for the same reason, but it really didn't bring up too much. It did hit pretty hard watching certain things, but it didn't get to me as much as I was thinking it would

In a video I did for #Upworthy, I put it like this: I understand why people call suicide selfish, but I can't understand why those people can see someone set on fire every single day and not realize why they might want to put out the flames. And, for those with severe mental health issues, that's how it can feel: Like every day is excruciating pain.

I fully agree! When I first heard this version of the song, haunting was the first word that came to me. It's so sad but at the same time almost calming like you said. This is relatable.. I lost a dear friend of mine cuz of a similar situation. It fucking hurts. I'm tired of losing people cuz of depression. For those who are going through the same, I'm sorry for your loss. It's hard but don't blame yourself. I'm trying not to blame myself too. We'll get through it somehow. Now about high schools.. they aren't all so great. But it doesn't mean you can't make the experience better for yourself. There's nice people there too but assholes and bullies are everywhere.. don't let it get to you. If someone is bullying you, hang in there. Open up to someone who might be able to help. If you don't want to, just stay strong. But keep in mind that there's always people who want to help. You just have to look in the right places to find them. Don't let it break you. High school doesn't last forever so you won't be seeing those pricks for too long. If you're lonely... too shy or ''awkward'' to make friends, don't worry about it. Don't care what others say. You're awesome. Your time will come. Make the best of it. Find something to keep you busy. It's better to wait for real friends to come along than be surrounded by fake ones... which is usually the case in HS. Shoutout to all of those wonderful socially awkward weirdos. Stay awesome and stay safe my friends. For the heartbroken ones... don't waste your time on a person who doesn't have time for you. Dealing with it at the very beginning was hard as hell. I learned how to cope with it. Not entirely but definitely better than before. Overthinking. Worrying too much. Caring too much (yes it's a thing). Not being able to finish simple tasks. And don't even get me started on panic attacks. I'm not necessarily naming things I'm dealing with, since, in a way, everyone has it differently. For all of you... no matter what kind of anxiety you have... we're all gonna be okay. Find a distraction, a hobby.. to take your mind off of it. It helps. To all of you lovely people, stay safe and sane. If you're depressed, which usually comes with those previous things, don't give up. I've been there, still am. I know how it is, trust me. This is not just another one of those optimistic/positive advices. Depression fucks you up. It doesn't just go away. If you don't have anyone to talk to about it, find someone online... it's usually easier to open up and pour your heart out to someone who doesn't know you/won't judge. ''Find someone online'' huh... it's easier than it sounds. It's enough to look through some of the comments. There's people going through the same. You are NOT alone. No matter how lonely you feel, there's always someone willing to listen... someone who cares. Even I find it hard to believe that good times will come. It's all about the perspective. I'll find a million reasons for you to stay alive. When it comes to helping myself, it's not as easy. But hey, I'm still here. And so are you. Yes, you reading this comment right now. Thank you so much for writing this, I just got out of a bad break up and have been in pain but am hanging on for the right person. And yes, high school can be very depressing when you're struggling comparing yourself to others and dealing with anxiety from everything that comes along with school, still trying to find yourself and your identity. As someone who has graduated high school about 4 years ago, I will actually say that sometimes I do miss high school. I never actually realized that there was life BEYOND it. I think when you're in high school, that's your whole world, all you see, and you never really realize that there is so much life, so much life after high school. And you guys, the years start to go by fast once you're out of high school. I'm serious. Looking back now, I would have been different in high school. I was shy back then and kind of awkward and too cool for school kind of girl. But being who I am now, going back, I would have done more. I would have taken more initiative, done my homework, be present in class, raise your hand when you have something important to say in class, don't care about what other people think, you might say something that could help other people and create a ripple. I would have been more confident. But I guess it's because I'm an adult now. As teenagers, we have so much growing up going on in our hearts, emotionally confusions and we deal with so much pressure from the crowd. It can be really tough in high school. But I do miss it. I miss all the crushes I had and seeing them during passing period and when you would go to football games and stuff. I was that weird, quiet girl that had a crush on a popular boy, who liked me too, secretly, and always noticed me. It's just those little things. You'll never really have that again. Embrace that period of your life when you're young and in high school. As MUCH as you say "I can't wait to get the fuck out of here and graduate," and trust me I was saying that to myself nearly everyday, somehow, you look back on it and you appreciate it. You really do, and a part of you really misses it. And you see the beauty for what it was.

You know it's really sad! The second I was done watching the show I was so sad for about a day and a half, I had to say to myself "it's only a show". But that's the screwed up thing, IT WASN'T JUST A SHOW!!! The issues that were in the show happen in real life. Bullying, depression, suicide, rape, and so many other issues are going on all around us and most of us are doing nothing about it. We need to be kind and loving toward everyone, and if someone is being mean to you kill em with kindness (thank you Selena Gomez!) Treat others as you want them to treat you! When this song plays after Clay gives the tapes to the counselor in season 1, it is something special. The look on Clay's face when he sees all the students walking past him and the sad expression of him looking down and onward is indescribable. You can sense his pain and regret with everything's that's happened up to that point. Great character and cinematography there.

In a video I did for #Upworthy, I put it like this: I understand why people call suicide selfish, but I can't understand why those people can see someone set on fire every single day and not realize why they might want to put out the flames. And, for those with severe mental health issues, that's how it can feel: Like every day is excruciating pain.

This is relatable.. I lost a dear friend of mine cuz of a similar situation. It fucking hurts. I'm tired of losing people cuz of depression. For those who are going through the same, I'm sorry for your loss. It's hard but don't blame yourself. I'm trying not to blame myself too. We'll get through it somehow.
Now about high schools.. they aren't all so great. But it doesn't mean you can't make the experience better for yourself. There's nice people there too but assholes and bullies are everywhere.. don't let it get to you. If someone is bullying you, hang in there. Open up to someone who might be able to help. If you don't want to, just stay strong. But keep in mind that there's always people who want to help. You just have to look in the right places to find them. Don't let it break you. High school doesn't last forever so you won't be seeing those pricks for too long.
If you're lonely... too shy or ''awkward'' to make friends, don't worry about it. Don't care what others say. You're awesome. Your time will come. Make the best of it. Find something to keep you busy. It's better to wait for real friends to come along than be surrounded by fake ones... which is usually the case in HS. Shoutout to all of those wonderful socially awkward weirdos. Stay awesome and stay safe my friends.
For the heartbroken ones... don't waste your time on a person who doesn't have time for you. Everyone has that special someone, it's just a matter of time when you'll find yours. Don't give up on love, don't give up on life. Learn from it. Keep in mind that it made you happy at one point. Don't think about the rest. When you find the love of your life none of this will matter. Be patient. Be hopefull. Don't change. You will be loved for who you are. There's good and bad times. Don't let the bad times get to you.
Ah now anxiety... oh what to say about it. I had trouble understanding certain things about myself, until I actually realized what's wrong with me. Dealing with it at the very beginning was hard as hell. I learned how to cope with it. Not entirely but definitely better than before. Overthinking. Worrying too much. Caring too much (yes it's a thing). Not being able to finish simple tasks. And don't even get me started on panic attacks. I'm not necessarily naming things I'm dealing with, since, in a way, everyone has it differently. For all of you... no matter what kind of anxiety you have... we're all gonna be okay. Find a distraction, a hobby.. to take your mind off of it. It helps. To all of you lovely people, stay safe and sane.
If you're depressed, which usually comes with those previous things, don't give up. I've been there, still am. I know how it is, trust me. This is not just another one of those optimistic/positive advices. Depression fucks you up. It doesn't just go away. If you don't have anyone to talk to about it, find someone online... it's usually easier to open up and pour your heart out to someone who doesn't know you/won't judge. ''Find someone online'' huh... it's easier than it sounds. It's enough to look through some of the comments. There's people going through the same. You are NOT alone. No matter how lonely you feel, there's always someone willing to listen... someone who cares. Even I find it hard to believe that good times will come. It's all about the perspective. I'll find a million reasons for you to stay alive. When it comes to helping myself, it's not as easy. But hey, I'm still here. And so are you. Yes, you reading this comment right now. You've made it this far.. why would you want to give up now? I'm proud of you, keep holding on... and don't even think about letting go.

Thank you so much for writing this, I just got out of a bad break up and have been in pain but am hanging on for the right person. And yes, high school can be very depressing when you're struggling comparing yourself to others and dealing with anxiety from everything that comes along with school, still trying to find yourself and your identity. As someone who has graduated high school about 4 years ago, I will actually say that sometimes I do miss high school. I never actually realized that there was life BEYOND it. I think when you're in high school, that's your whole world, all you see, and you never really realize that there is so much life, so much life after high school. And you guys, the years start to go by fast once you're out of high school. I'm serious. Looking back now, I would have been different in high school. I was shy back then and kind of awkward and too cool for school kind of girl. But being who I am now, going back, I would have done more. I would have taken more initiative, done my homework, be present in class, raise your hand when you have something important to say in class, don't care about what other people think, you might say something that could help other people and create a ripple. I would have been more confident. But I guess it's because I'm an adult now. As teenagers, we have so much growing up going on in our hearts, emotionally confusions and we deal with so much pressure from the crowd. It can be really tough in high school. But I do miss it. I miss all the crushes I had and seeing them during passing period and when you would go to football games and stuff. I was that weird, quiet girl that had a crush on a popular boy, who liked me too, secretly, and always noticed me. It's just those little things. You'll never really have that again. Embrace that period of your life when you're young and in high school. As MUCH as you say "I can't wait to get the fuck out of here and graduate," and trust me I was saying that to myself nearly everyday, somehow, you look back on it and you appreciate it. You really do, and a part of you really misses it. And you see the beauty for what it was.

You know it's really sad! The second I was done watching the show I was so sad for about a day and a half, I had to say to myself "it's only a show". But that's the screwed up thing, IT WASN'T JUST A SHOW!!! The issues that were in the show happen in real life. Bullying, depression, suicide, rape, and so many other issues are going on all around us and most of us are doing nothing about it. We need to be kind and loving toward everyone, and if someone is being mean to you kill em with kindness (thank you Selena Gomez!) Treat others as you want them to treat you! If you treat others like crap then you will probably get crap right back at you. Do the world a favor and help people, most importantly don't forget to be kind and loving.
