400hp in 1935 - this car was extremely fast.

That is _unheard of_ in a passenger car from the 30s. You didn't see another 400hp passenger car until the mid 60s.

Extremely dangerous you mean, while very classy, these old cars handle like garbage, then put 400 hp in that.. yes i would absolutely drive it every day.

Damn this car had no competition for decades.
Already in 30’s they had DOHC (even today many Automobile companies use shitty OHV)
Super charger and 4 valves per cylinder already in 1935. Thats impressive.

All J Duesenberg chassis were built in 1928-29. It just took 8 years to sell them.

I saw this beautiful automobile at the Cunningham museum in 1980. Amazing car amongst some of the most beautiful cars I’ve ever seen. When I walked in the first car I saw was a Porsche 917k that belonged to Vasek Polak. The SSK stood out amongst the others.

I named my German Shepard, "Duesy" as she is tops in her class. Sleek, fast powerful and beautiful lines. There's nothing like a Duesy!

I think there were only 2 built and Clark Gable had the other one.
Cooper and Gable were rivals, of course.

Having read a bit more about the Duesenberg borthers and their company, I can simply say that they make every other name seem miniscule and pointless. Their final products were simply astonishing and there was virtually nothing that could run with them. The SSJ's 400hp engine output is staggering even by today's standards!

@Kaloyn Erusalimov - I find it amusing that the Great Mercedes Benz 500K of 1935 was a stunning looking roadster with external exhausts like the Duesenberg, but only 2 vs the Duesy's 4 pipes. The Mercedes chassis was much more advanced than the Duesenberg's straight front axle and solid rear axle with leaf springs. The Merc had independent susp. front and rear with coil springs. However, the Mercedes engine was anemic compared to the Duesenberg with the supercharged straight eight producing a mere 160 hp while the Duesenberg SJ put out 320 - twice the power. Ideally, I'd love to see the Duesenberg engine put into the Mercedes and you would have the complete luxury and performance package!

Well if I may add some insight. The Duesenberg was very powerful and fast. But the car was very tough and loud to drive even by standards of the day. A Packard that was much slower and less powerful had the advantage of being quiet and smooth and easy to drive

    • @HoodsCZ

@@Loulovesspeed Don't forget. Stutz Motor Company produced high-end cars like Duesy.

@@Kaputnik11 "the car was very tough and loud to drive even by standards of the day" Not according to this man. As far as "quiet", the Duesies I experienced years ago at the ACD Festival parades were unbelievably quiet - until they revved. Then it was more masculine grumbling than ANY machine I've ever heard; Harley, muscle cars, all have high-pitched whines vs the completely bass Duesie. Just awesome.
