I find Red Squirrels one of the most enjoyable mammals there is to watch in nature. I have just spent 5 full days filming Red Squirrels in a small UK stronghold and there was never a dull moment. They just don't seem to stop for more than a few seconds and are so funny and cute. I love the Squirrel leaping from tree to tree and the footage showing them trot and hop along fallen trees is fabulous! . It was well worth all your efforts out in nature and the editing involved to produce this video and thank you for sharing 👍◕‿◕

    The red squirrel is locally extinct in Southern England except for the Isle of Wight (15 x 20 miles), off the Hampshire coast, the Scilly Isles, 30 miles SW of Cornwall, and the "cause celebre" of Brownsea Island. Brownsea Island measures 1 x 2 miles and is in Poole Harbour, Dorset.
    In those cases, the grey squirrels have not crossed the water.

    • @SewaneeTennessee
      @SewaneeTennessee 4 года назад

      The red squirrel is the major cause of power outages on Islesboro. They climb power poles and short out wiring resulting in blowing fuses. This will disrupt power to one of more houses. It saves the transformers from exploding.
      On 8-28-2020 at 8:30 am we heard an explosion which sounded like a gun shot. At the same time our power went off. We assumed that out transformer had made the noise but out neighbors still had power. We called Central Maine Power and they were already aware of the outage but it only affected two houses.
      CMP keeps a truck on Islesboro but they had to send over a worker from the mainland. Fred, the worker, was on vacation, but came over anyway. He had the correct address but was at the wrong house. I found him and directed him to my house one block away.
      Fred soon located the problem. The noise we heard was caused by a red squirrel shorting out our power line and blowing the fuse to our house and one neighbor’s house. Our neighbor had workers at his house and needed power for his nail gun. Fred had the power back on in 15 minutes but it was three house from the time the power went out until it was restored. We were lucky that CMP sent someone over at all. We could have existed with our 5K generator but our neighbor was too far ways for us to extend a power cable to him.

    • @ligerowns
      @ligerowns 7 лет назад +6

      Sir Klopp the pine marten I believe would do the job, it evolved alongside the red so the reds smaller size would make them harder to get than a grey for a pine marten. it is a native species too

    • @forestdweller5581
      @forestdweller5581 6 лет назад +6

      That is correct. Restoring the pine marten population in the UK will also help restore the red squirrel. Pine marten are often associated with predation on red squirrel but they mostly catch easier prey. You can't beat nature :) No need for introduction of others. That is the biggest mistake.

      Liusila grey squirrels are a non native species and they have pushed red squirrels out of their native range in lowland britain. In reality many people especially in Scotland want to see red squirrels but if they are going to see red squirrels they need to prevent grey squirrels from spreading north otherwise the red squirrel will go extinct in Britain.
