Bernard Cribbins was a UK acting legend. Pretty much every British adult under the age of about 70 will have seen him in something during their childhood. He was in the The Railway Children and the Doctor Who movie Dalek Invasion of Earth, he returned to Doctor Who a decade or so ago, he was in three of the Carry On films and had a couple of hit singles back in the 50s (Hole In The Ground and Right Said Fred). He was Old Jack in the children's series Old Jack's Boat, and most famously, he was the narrator of legendary children's animated series, The Wombles.
He was apparently one of the nicest guys in the world - nobody had a bad word to say about him.

He was in one of the 1960s Dr Who films and became a key player in the series in the pazt decade+. His last work before he died last year was the Doctor Who episodes that will be shown soon. Genuine legend.

I grew up on Fawlty Towers, Black Adder and Red Dwarf and love them equally. Very funny.
The legendary Bernard Cribbens as Mr. Hutchins: he was a big star in the UK all my life! He passed away a year ago, aged 90, I think he was. You will find him in Dr Who, also.
Absolutely right about corkage! When I was in hospitality in NZ the 90s the local wine industry was trying to transition to Stelvin screwtop wine bottle caps. Vineyards had stored their library stocks of wine that way for years. I learned that corks in wine bottles were just the best solution that 18th century tech could come up with for an airtight seal. I further learned that "cork taint" affected almost a bottle in every case of traditionally sealed wine. (When a server pours you a tiny amount to taste when they open a bottle, it's so you can check for cork taint.)
Corked wine occurs when the contents of a bottle become contaminated with cork taint. Because corks are made of a natural substance, they can occasionally come into contact with airborne fungi. Under certain circumstances, these fungi can create a chemical compound known as TCA

Have you guys noticed the wording on the sign changes every week? The 'in joke' was that it was the paperboy fooling around to wind Basil up.
Reacting with the cork is when a bacteria in the cork turns the wine into vinegar. There was a large batch of bad corks in wine in europe in the 80s that caused many wine companies to stop using cork and change to screwtops. Due to about two years of wine from france and Spain turning to vinegar and many vineyards went bust.
I've watched this superb comic piece of history numerous times over the years and it never fails to make me laugh, great to see you both enjoying this treasure too......

When peas are harvested they go into the collection machine that freezes them in just a few minutes.
Frozen peas are fresher than fresh peas unless you're growing them yourself.

@@dougiemilnephotography756 That was the case back then. I worked for Birdseye in the early 1970s and frozen peas were one of their most iconic products. The peas came direct from the fields and were 'depodded' and frozen as fast as they could be processed.

For the US audience, a "borstal" = male young offendors; institution prevalent between the 1950's and 1970's. Unlike other institutions, the inmates went out in public to do work in the community.

I think 'Borstal Boy' is Irish author Brendan Beehan's most famous work? Today we'd refer to that subclass as Young Offenders; usually young males in trouble with the law and courts over petty crime, but not hardened career criminals.

This episode has my favourite ending of all. The timing of Basil's scream and his facial expression crack me up every time! Great to see you blokes had the same reaction! This episode also stars the late, great Bernard Cribbins - a great British entertainer in various comedic and dramatic roles for more than 70 years - as the verbose spoon salesman, Mr. Hutchinson!
Being verbose and aggressive helps a salesman be successful. Someone shy and nice wouldn't do so well at it.
In case you're wondering, Borstal is a young offender's institution, I don't think we use the term any more.

John Cleese was inspired to write this after staying at a hotel in Torquay called Gleneagles. Apparently the owner was actually worse than Basil.
Donald Sinclair. The hotel has now been demolished and retirement apartment block built there called "Sachs Lodge" after Andrew Sachs who died just before they were built.

Because Mr. Hutchinson is the most annoying character from the entire series (yes, more than Mrs. Richards). This episode is infuriating, and rarely funny.

14:30 corked wine : sometimes a cark stays damp, allowing air and rot into the bottle. Tin screw caps are better.
They did some outakes that were hilarious. They had to do the scene again .Look it up. 🇬🇧🏴
The cork dries out which in turn allows air in turning the wine to sour. Hence the reason for laying bottles on their side. They have used corks for years as plastic corks and screw tops weren't available.
The whole reason people take a sip of wine before an entire glass is poured is to test it to make sure it isn't corked. It has nothing to do with 'tasting the wine'.
Sometimes the wine reacts with the cork and turns vinegary.
Frozen stuff absorbs too much water, that is how you can easily taste if something was frozen.

Many years ago I worked for a company that was much involved in frozen foods and one thing I learned was that peas were one of of the best things to freeze in terms of flavour, reducing wastage and making them available all year round. It's not surprising that it is the no.1 frozen vegetable in the UK.

One of the funny bits, if you haven't already noticed or been told already, is the "Fawlty Towers" sign at the start of each episode. The loose letters are rearranged each week, possibly by naughty schoolboys....

Corked wine has had oxygen seep through the cork and oxidises the wine, storing them on their sides keeps the cork wet and this should stop that happening. Corked wine has often been stored upright

When Fawlty Towers was bought & broadcast in Spain, Manuel was changed to a Mexican rather than "he's from Barcelona".
There was a live show here a few years back, not on stage, but in a restaurant setting with actors in the role of Basil, Manuel etc.

Corking happens when air gets past the cork, when the cork gets too dry etc. Then the wine ferments and spoils. Artificial corks are commonplace now.
The character of Basil was based on an actual hotel owner that John Cleese encountered while he was filming the Monty Python series of movies He was staying in a hotel (I forget the location) with his fellow Python cast mates and they were all appalled by the hotel owner's rudeness to the guests. In tact all his cast mates decided to leave and check into another hotel because the owner was so incredibly rude and obnoxious towards the guests. John Cleese and his then wife Connie Booth (who portrayed Polly in Fawlty Towers) did decide to stay. A few years later when John and Connie were brainstorming for an idea for a new tv series to write and produce they thought back to the surly hotel owner and that became their inspiration for the character for Basil and the show. They co wrote the pilot script and the rest, as they say, is history.
Ye, but have you seen the episode of an early 70s show which J C wrote for and hence includes an early equivalent to Basil in it, which was his dry run before they wrote F T?

Gleneagles Hotel, Torquay. The owner was called Donald Sinclair. He sold it sometime in the seventies, and it has now closed. I think it might have been demolished.

Fresh means from the field to the plate, freezing affects the texture and nutrition of most food and the difference is noticeable. Also, asking for fresh avoids eating stuff that's been in the freezer for half the year.

Fawlty Towers is based on a hotel that John Cleese stayed in
It was called The Gleneagles - the Pythons stayed there when they were making Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The owner threw Eric Idle's cases out because he thought there was a bomb in them, and criticised Terry Gilliam because he ate the "American" way, rather than the "British" way. John Cleese said he was the rudest man he ever met - and he became the model for Basil Fawlty.
By way of a tribute, the Gleneagles is mentioned in the episode "The Builders" as the place where the guests have to go for food while the building work is going on.
My favourite is The Germans totally fantastic
Absolutely, corked wine is ruined. The same way you can, say, be served a beer that's 'off' (because it's the last of a barrel, Or the pipes need to be cleaned, etc), any regular wine drinker will know instantly that their wine is 'corked', and Not to drink it.
The brilliant thing about the ending of this episode is that you know there should be an entire episode after it which should exist but maybe never will.

I’m guessing people have already said this but you guys need to check out the carry on movies. They are British comedy at the highest standard. And there’s plenty of them so the content will keep coming. Love the channel too, you guys are my go to when I need a laugh.

They are very much of their time. The men are mostly middle-aged leches and the women are either nubile bimbos or controlling dragons. But they are incredibly funny with it.

Fresh peas and frozen are not the same. If a restaurant advertises their vegetables are fresh then they had better not have been frozen.

Peas are ok frozen I guess, a lot of things don't taste the same frozen though.
The most common kind of wine flaw is called 'cork taint' (ie, when you hear people say a bottle is 'corked'). This means that the cork of the bottle has been infected with a bacteria called Trichloroanisole ('TCA' for short). A 'corked' wine will smell and taste like musty cardboard, wet dog, or a moldy basement.
On the word 'fresh', UK standards these days are still all over the place regarding the foodstuff or even context for that matter.
In terms of fruit and veg, fresh means being picked and as close to harvest as possible, as well as having no extra processing undertaken, including freezing. Hence frozen peas are not 'fresh', though there's nothing wrong with using them!
Yeah, they seem to be confusing "fresh" with "unspoiled". As in, freezing vegetables doesn't make them go bad. It does however change their texture and in some cases, the flavour as well. I remember thinking I didn't like vegetables as a child, until I tasted vegetables that had been cooked from FRESH (my mother only used mixed frozen vegetables from a bag). It makes a huge difference to me. I agree with others though, that peas are fine frozen, as long as they're cooked and used in food (as opposed to being eaten raw as a snack).

I had fresh veg regularly, but they were always boiled to death, mushy and tasteless.
When I moved out and cooked for myself, I went to making them ANY other way than boiling (with some tips from Chef Ramsay)!

FYI - once you freeze food it is NO LONGER FRESH!!!!
11:00 never open a restaurant, once you freeze food all the water molecules in the food expand and rupture the structure of the food, no matter how you defrost it, it will never taste like fresh food
In the UK the pea harvest is geared up to them being frozen within an hour of being picked. Once picked peas tend to dry out very fast and a frozen pea is usually far superior to any un-frozen ones you can find on sale.

It's been scientifically proven that frozen veg is just as good as fresh (in some cases like with peas: even better). Sadly this does not factor in to people's crazy beliefs that anything not dug up that morning is inherently evil. A lot of people believe frozen and tinned food must be contaminated in someway.
