He is mixing prerecorded tracks that come from multitrack recorder. He has separated tracks with kick drum, snare drum, hihats, percussions, bass, synths, fx, vocal samples etc, each track connected to fader on mixing console. He is actually creating the mix live on stage, like in the recording studio, as he can change volume and EQ of each component of song. That little box on top seems to be like some sort of wah/overdrive/distortion guitar pedal. Hope I made it little clearer :)
Also I'm pretty sure he's tweaking mostly the sends rather than eqs... not so much mixing as doing dub-type techniques. Check out videos of the Mad Professor to see a really polished version of this kind of "mixing desk as instrument" performance.
I agree and so does our Dutch DJ Armin van Buuren. He recently claimed in an interview that DJ's are no artists. Maybe most DJs don't have the musical skills but they sure know how to keep the crowd happy, and that is a talent too, right?
Pretty sure the box on top is a small monosynth... there's some noises coming out that sound pretty close to what you usually hear with simple homebrew monosynth boxes when he's tweaking it.
Totally. Great way to perform your own music imo, lets you work a PA system too, like a middle ground between FOH engo and performance. It's a geek boner seeing a Roland SRV, ADAT and other studio gear repping the stage for some trance! Great to see old school techniques still rolling and not just Abelton for a producer set. Far less convenient for a tour on the other hand....
This is actually not proper live, they are using "song mode" which means all the tracks are pre made and aarranged already. Then ES just tweaking filters on the desk and changing FX's etc. It's actually no different than laptop DJ's with FX box and mixing desk. (Of course sound quality being allot better with hardware) A proper live set is arranged of patterns and arrangements made live,, with allot of sounds or all being created live right then, no pre arranged songs in song mode.
Yes Merv does just twiddle the FX. But whats his competition? An army of so called 'live' musicians staring into a laptop on Facebook? ES should be given a medal for being one of the only bands today with their own sound and way of doing things. Honestly, todays music is like the attack of the clones with the same people using the same kit (laptop -pah!) with the same methods (VST plug ins) producing the exact same tired and worn out dull sound. Eat Static dares to be different. Rock on!
Are there any recent live sets recorded straight off the mixing desk without using a mic? This is great but would also be nice to have something a bit better quality.
yes, kind of it is already sequenced out, and he is really not doing anything other than messing with levels and EQs (besides composing all that music before). ;)
Song mode?? He's effecting a multi track ADAT mate. Not sure what you mean by song mode. Merv has performed this was since the mid 90s. Also there are no filters on the desk he is using. Simply FX. I didnt say what Merv was doing wasn't anything other then a blag. Just in my book its a far better blag than watching yet another Tw*t with a laptop.
I think it would be really interesting if it was, say 3 very good keyboard players, a bass player using a pick and a top bollox drummer playing some of the Eat Static classics. That would be a real challenge and a great live show. What do you think merv ?
been done. see eatstatic - in the nude album. when the act still had more than one member, it consisted of ozric tentacles drummer, merv pepler, and joie hinton, an ozric tentacles keyboard player. they were well rooted "real" instruments before beginning their eatstatic project. and mervs tight drumming skills are more than apparent in all eatstatic stuff.
let them all eat staticaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaau put the aliens in the middle of it u got all the answers
Mate these days, I could make my set at home. IE all the mixing is all ready done then simply mime over the top. Hence how modern day DJs seem to have to pull faces and use exaggerated arm movements when tweaking faders so they look like there actually doing something. Also, reading the crowd. Half the crowd is that spangled on E they would dance to a stuck 909 for an hour. Seriously, Laptop DJs have got to be the highest paid for the lowest skill level ever.
Sorry thought he was using song mode, similar kind of thing though. But I do agree looks better than laptop stuff everyone uses these days ,and the hardware sounds a million times better also. I'ts not really live but at least playing his own stuff with hardware took down there for the job.
Yes, but when one DJs they play music made by others. Eat Static actually make all of there own music and have done since the early 90s. Also, are DJs really talented? Speeding up and slowing down other peoples music was my day, IE the 90s with Technics 1210s. You only had to be able to work a pitch control. These days even the pitch control is done for you by software. Im sorry if this offends, but you could train a chimp to DJ. Im amazed no one has. DJ chimp.
he was off the chain that night loved it dancing my ass off yeeees :D

I can't see a lot of mixing going on. All the faders are up.
One of the Masters, This is brilliance... ;)
well that certainly rocked em
