  • Researchers at the BP International Centre for Advanced Materials (BP-ICAM) are working to tackle corrosion, a global problem which costs worldwide industry over $2 Trillion every year.
BP currently uses coatings to protect its steel assets from corrosion but if this coating gets scratched or damaged, there is no protection of the underlying metal substrate and the steel will begin to corrode.
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are working with BP to lead the way in the development of revolutionary new coatings, known as smart coatings.
The team at Illinois have created self-healing materials which not only heal but protect against corrosion, with potential applications for the oil and gas, energy, aerospace and transport industries.
