Came across this yesterday as I needed to put my spare wheel up and didn't want to pay a fortune for a carrier. Honestly what a godsend! So easy to put up and looks proper mint. Thankyou!
Im gonna have issues with wheel carrier i got a minibus ...but one thing id have done was put a bit of silicone round the nuts just to stop any water ingress or rusting etc A simple job though. Nice one
Thanks for your time leon Learning loads and going to do a build on something as got bitta time on me hands and can't help to always be busy as suffer with depression and anxiety so figured out that best for me to keep 10000 miles an hour . Thanks for the ideas n hard work Regards Lee
Awesome video ! About to do the same to mine thanks for the tip ! Has it lasted ? Also you look like you live close to me but I've never seen your van.
Still looking like the day I installed it! I used to live in litherland, I moved to Wallasey two years ago, but my mum still lives there so Down that way al lot.
I’ve been trying to figure out a way to mount my spare to the back door on my ambulance. The door is thicker than a normal van, I might try doing what you did. I’m just concerned if the door can carry the weight of the tire. Years ago I owned a Sportsmobile Ford E350 with the spare mounted on the rear door, but eventually the weight of the tire caused the sheet metal to start tearing the door where it was mounted. Thanks for the video and idea!
@@LETSGOYONDER BTW-I used that same style of drill bit during the reconstruction of my ambulance into a camper. I was surprised how good it worked drilling through steel. Started with a small pilot hole and then used plenty of 'cutting oil' going slow and steady. I was thinking of a 'swing-away' hitch tire mount, but still like your idea, and it is something I can do myself, as I don't know how to weld, and the store bought hitches are big $$$$.
It's always nice to get something done mate. That should all do the trick! Do you have to clean the small diameter flue often and do you get much rain down it? Cheers 👍
As of yet I've had no need to clean it! Had it in since March last year and. Checked it twice, still pretty clean! I think the tiniest of rain might get in but not enough to notice 😁
@@LETSGOYONDER That's good Leon. I watched one guy on RUclips saying he cleaned his 3" flue once a week. I thought that seemed a bit much. I think your stoves flue is a bit less, though.
@@LETSGOYONDER This was wintertime and he lives on a riverboat so probably every day, even so 😆 Once a week I think is a bit extreme. I know it's wrong but I never cleaned my house chimney for 12 years lol. I used to burn old CD cases and even old computer rewritable disks plus some aluminum Chinese food cartons. Extreme heat from the CD cases and the fumes from the aluminium kept the flue clean 🙂👍 It is also a larger flue though.
Hey mate... What size bolts did you use, I saw you said 14 or 15mm would be good but is that 140 - 150mm long or 14 mm wide It's been a long day 😂 been trying to fine a solution to this so I can use the spare wheel carrier for a grey water tank and as you probably know... Everything costs a fortune. Take it easy sit
You should really consider putting some sealant around where the bolts go through the door. Water will find its way in there and rot your board, plus mess up your insulation and cause mold issues.
Just discovered your channel. Enjoyed this vid, not sure about the spare wheel fixing, did you consider putting big flat penny washers under the heads of the bolts to help spread the load so the wood doesn’t distort over time from carrying the weight on a very small surface area. Hope this helps. kind regards, K33F
The button heads of the bolts are pretty big like, and there is 5 of them! hopefully it will be fine :) but i guess only time will tell! thanks for the comment :) glad you liked the video!
Hey mate , great video. im thinking to do this tomorrow , can i please get your help on what nuts should i get ? are they called m10 size or am i wrong? thank you
Did you have to reinforce your door hinges for this? I've a Renault master and have the wheel stored in our garage but I'd love to take the space back and mount the tire under the van or on the back door.
that is actually a great tip to do the wheel hanging... I have been thinking about doing the spare wheel on one of the doors of my sprinter dwelling but have been putting it off for too long so it seems... Since I like pieces of cake and like to eat them as well I will go forth and hang the wheel on the the lower part of the rear door (which has a bit more room as you propably know) Update: I was ready to start the hanging of the spare wheel when I got thinking (bad thing for progress I know) I first have to ask you Leon, how does the wheel holdup (pun intended) ? I reckon the hinges having to deal with the added weight won't like it too much.. your thoughts/observations please. I did bite the bullet on other matters inspire by you: I got the same flat black CIA paintjob... very nice...
Just curious-Did you install it yet? How did it work out? My wheel is an 8-lug BUDD Wheel and really heavy. Just wondering if the ambulance door will handle it ok!
@@Nonthanburi2 I skipped the wheel hanging for now. My spare wheel is not that heavy (a standard 15 inch steel mercedes sprinter rim with a rather normal sized tire on there) and I feel the added weight may cause the hinges to get damaged. I am not worried about the skin of the door itself (I suspect a plywood backing would prevent any tear-outs) and even 5 holes for every mounting hole seems overkill too, but the weight may be too much for the two standard hinges. I am looking into fabricating a separate frame which hinges on it's own hinges and is mounted the same way the original hinges are fixed to the body of the van...

At last - Ive found a video that makes much more sense than spending an absolute fortune to store your wheel - Thnaks Leon
Van life is for everyone, not just those with loads of money!
I was all set to design something a lot more involved than this. Glad I found it. Thanks for sharing...
Back here the second time I had to admire your periscope setup...very nice...

It’s been a while since I watched this video so I can’t remember if I mentioned it or not but I did make sure it was sealed 👍 thank you 🙏
good idea thinking of doing this myself well done
Looks like a great solution! How's the door holding up with the additional weight? Looking at taking the same approach
Door still going strong to this day 👍
Excellent vid butty.🐑🏴

I used the wood to help spread the weight of the wheel, so far it’s doing great! No sign of warping or anything. Hope it works for you!

It’s doing absolutely fine!!
Great video Leon.
Hi Leon, thank you for your useful videos!
After almost a year with the spare wheel on the rear door, have you seen any issues so far?

hey! Theres been no issue what so ever, the door panel hasnt warped or anything, still going strong :)

14mm wide bolts ☺️ the length was about 100mm but I ended up cutting them down
