In 1949 horses and mules were still in common use in the US tobacco belt. And apparently there was no mechanization whatsoever in any portion of the process from sowing the seeds, transplanting the seedlings, cultivation, removing the flowering heads, harvesting the three types of leaves and curing. 1949 was only 73 years ago (as of the 2022 harvest). The process hadn't changed much in 250 years.

Enjoying tobacco in limited quantities will do less harm than today's fitness craze with proteins, plant-based artificial testosterone and other vitamins.
The bad thing about the tobacco industry was the flavor enhancers and aromas that were introduced later, as well as additives that were supposed to make the smoker immediately dependent on the tobacco. Make him to a chain smoker.
