The phrasing changes a lot in Polish dubs. For example in "We Don't Talk About Bruno": Felix: "Abuela, get the umbrellas", in Polish he says "hold up, I have an umbrella". Pepa: "In doing so, he floods my brain", in Polish: "And my brain started to heat up" Dolores: "I associate him with the sound of falling sand", in Polish: "his voice rustled like rustles dry sand" Camillo: "A seven-foot frame, rats along his back", it wouldn't make sense to use feet, because we're not in America, and meters didn't rhyme, so in Polish it is "Tall as an oak, brother of slithery rats". Isabela: "[...] will grow like the grapes that thrive on the vine", in Polish: "will grow like the trunks of the trees" Sometimes it doesn't fit at all, sometimes it's a lyrical magic, sometimes it's awkward. They ROBBED Dolores of her great rap verse in Polish. It's awful. But Camillo's verse is amazingly translated.
It’s such a shame that happens during the translation process 😩 I guess that’s the problem with writing lyrics for rhythmic and rhyming reasons in one language; translations will start to lose the initial effect 😕
Back in the day (early 2010sish) I was OBSESSED with this German emo-punk-rock band Tokio Hotel. (Any current/former "Aliens" around here?) They recorded both German and English versions of most of their songs, and often, sadly, the depth and/or emotion of the original lyrics just got diluted in translation. 😔 Man, I loved their music....
To answer your question, they definitely change the lyrics in any way they need to to make it work in the language and phrasing work. I haven’t really listened to the Japanese songs from Encanto but I recently watched the stage version of Frozen and the lyrics to Let it Go are often quite different. Just in the first few lines*, “The snow that started falling erases my footsteps. I’m alone in this pure white world.” Compared to, “The snow glows white on the mountain tonight, not a footprint to be seen. A kingdom of isolation and it looks like I’m the queen.” At least for Japanese, it often requires a lot of changes to work but it loses a bit of the nuance of the original. One of my Japanese friends was really surprised to hear the original version because it felt more mature to him than the Japanese version *I’m not fluent so there might be errors
