Yea, when the show was about the dangerous perils of traveling the western front..it was compelling despite a few quibbles, but suddenly (like almost all things) it became more about a plucky young women trying to be more like a man while she explores her womenhood or whatever at the same time. Theres the wearing of pants, getting her period and impressing the men with her new found skills. Sigh, its all gotten so predictable and boring. When you have Sam Eilliot in tow, how can you waste time with more "modern women in old times" nonsense?
First three episodes were fairly good...after that, it lost the plot and become Sex on the Prairie. The advertisement for the show centered around the McGraw and Sam Elliot. Classic bait and switch. EDIT: Also, the fetishizing of suicide was really disturbing. No, there aren't a lot of accounts from wagon trains that people were just feeding themselves bullets on a regular basis. It felt nihilistic and forced.
The suicide scene was disgusting. The feminism is also totally obnoxious. Women had tasks to do. They didn't sit on their asses watching the men all day. They couldn't just ride off and start ranching. Also Elsa just acts like a man, it's gross.
I stopped watching after the 5th episode. Went back after a few weeks and tried to watch 6th and 7th episode, what a mistake. It became worse than a soap opera after the first 2-3 episodes, which were good. There was repetition in the episodic storylines, the acting became more monotonous (especially Faith Hill and her daughter). The wagon train basically became "stuck in the mud", with the girl just being sassy, Faith being useless, McGraw/Sam just getting mad at somebody, and us, the audience, just waiting around to see who is killed next. Horrible, unauthentic drama.
That girl destroyed the show for me.

Had to quit. The “message” just gets worse and worse. All of his stuff is like this.
This show is horrible.
