@@kimtvz yessss! I can't think of one coming of age movie w/ an indian! or an asian.. that doesn't have strict parents or grades or whatever to worry about
Well apparently the author of this video is just concerned about “not having enough black actors in the main roles”. Uhm, I don’t think you don’t have enough of them tbh. What about Indians/Eastern Europeans/Arabian/Chinese/Japanese/Korean etc. Sorry, but we don’t get enough roles either and aren’t saying anything about it. There’s more discrimination against us yet no one says anything about it. Coz it’s so convenient isn’t it ? Just make struggles about one ethnic group and let the others go to hell like..why? Learn to acknowledge that you’re not discriminated because you’re black, you’re discriminated because you’re different than American/western/British etc. But people want you to think otherwise. And learn to acknowledge that OTHER ETHNICITIES are discriminated against too.
@@MariqStefan yo she never said other poc aren't represnted well -- she even talked about the lack of healthy representation for asian women. it's just that in this particular video, she's talking about black women
Y'all are missing the point lol. She's not saying any of these movies are bad. Just that, as women of color, it's hard for people like us to be able to identify with the leads in almost all of these films. Which is something we really want to be able to do. I enjoy a lot of these movies too, but that doesn't change the fact that they will always feel like they just weren't made for me.
Exactly and we should also have diversity behind the camera because does are the people who can write and create charecters who people can see themselves in.
As much as I love coming of age movies they have plenty of flaws like lack of diversity and they set unrealistic views for teenagers. They force this "if you're not doing this or that during your teenage years your boring and your living life wrong" message.
fr, it's made me scared that I'm gonna waste my teenage years because I don't have friends and a lack of freedom when I should just enjoy the present moment
@Jasmine L. oh yeah don’t self-diagnose bc that could put some sort of image into your mind which tricks your psychological mentality to make you more depressed. i went to my doctor and talked to him about it and he said it lines up to what i described.
zandaya said herself that she is “hollywood’s acceptable version of a black girl”, she knows, everyone does, but it’s still something people refuse to acknowledge? it pisses me off how shes sayin it right to everyone’s face but they drift the conversation so easily because they know they ain’t doing nothing to change that.
@@sarahxo2317 it’s actually because of colorism. she’s not ‘too dark’ because she’s mixed (black & white) making her acceptable as black in white filmmakers’ perspective
do i love these classic coming of age movies i grew up with? yes do i think they’re iconic and extremely entertaining? yes do they absolutely suck when it comes to representation? of course. you can love something and call it out at the same time. the two are not mutually exclusive ❤️
Okay but imagine a makeover montage where she embraces her natural hair and figures out how to style it! My best friend is black and she taught me that hair is so important for black women, and I’d love a makeover scene where someone starts embracing their natural hair or starts getting box braids or something so girls can grow up and recognize that having those hairstyles can be and are meant to be beautiful. It doesn’t have to necessarily turn into a race thing either, it could just be like looking at herself with different hair for the first time and being like “Woah! I look hot!”
Braids, twists , locs ...I want it all. But they’d need to hire black people and even Tyler Perry doesn’t want to do that he’d rather keep putting them in cheap wigs 😒
I JUST WANT A NATIVE AMERICAN *in* A MOVIE LIKE THEY DONT EVEN HAVE TO BE A LEAD JUST BE INCLUDED AS LIKE A SIDE CHARACTER OR SOMETHING BECAUSE WE DO EXIST an id want it that character to just BE a character who happens to be native american, they dont have to be some typical mystical medicine man type of character also more interracial couples that DONT include a white person, im tired of it. lemme see something else; two wildly different cultures coming together
@Chrry Cola EXACTLY that’s why I said it 😂😂 like I watched Ginny & Georgia & I noticed that majority of the main cast poc characters were either biracially white or had a white parent
I feel the same way about the lack of Asians in lead roles, especially South Asians. Like for once show a character who practices a different religion or is very in tune with her culture, native tongue, whatever. Never Have I Ever is the only show I've heard of that has an Asian lead and there was a whole episode dedicated to her hating her culture.
yea that was kinda weird to me. like ik it was made by a South Asian woman but like it seemed so Americanised. As if the main character just wanted to be "normal" and not like genuinely be in tune with her culture.ofc she does give in at the end but its still off putting
honestly the only time ive seen a south asian character in media that didnt hate her culture/have an entire arc based around it was in a kids cartoon and even then it had to be confirmed by the studio making the show bc she didnt have a canonical ethnicity
Very good point, I hate that specific episode too. It's very stereotypical and cringey and sort of ridicules an important part of our culture. It's not that I'm completely and utterly offended at it or hate it to the core, but that was just something unnecessary for a show that was otherwise turning out somewhat well. Completely agree with you!
I think that Devi hating her culture was pretty realistic as arab/indian/desi girls always have this period of their life where they just hate their culture, but they should've adressed it more, with devi overcaming this and accepting her origins, embracing her roots and family without any shame, that would do a great coming of age with overcoming internalized racism, prejudices, stereotypes etc... Never have I ever is a great show with amazing characters, really good emotionnal moments, jokes, a diverse cast, but it is not finished yet right ? I believe they'll do smth super great !
@@harunakirisaki2602 I agree that most people go through that phase but like you said they didn't expand upon it so it ended up like she hated it and that's all. Similarly they briefly talked abt the islamophobia that some Indians have but never expanded on it so it didn't seem like it needed to be there in the first place
currently for my script writing class, I'm working on this coming of age script and the main character is very much a dark skinned black girl. the basic plot is she finds out that she was adopted and decides to go on a roadtrip with her best friend to mmet her bio mom. shenanigans ensue
As a South Asian person, it would be cool to see a brown love interest or mean girl. There is such an underwhelming amount of representation for us in coming of age films and when there is we're always portrayed as the geeky side characters or the model minority
agreed, if we're portrayed at all, it's in the form of a skinny nerdy boy. the one actually good form of representation i've seen of us is in never have i ever, but that's about it.
“coming of age” movies are usually pretty unrealistic and set specific and harsh standards for what you’re “supposed” to be doing during your high school years. sure the movies themselves can be alright sometimes but they’re not realistic
@@ninjanibba4259 the whole point of coming of age movies is to be relatable to coming of age people lol but sometimes these films end up being done by middle aged adults for middle aged adults :/
@@HLo-zl5zo coming of age movies don't just extend to kids or teens, it can go to adults as well, it requires learning about themselves or rediscovering themselves
My main criticism with Coming of Age films is the way they tend to influence people by using tropes that we honestly don't need anymore, such as the "Mean Girly Girl" or the "Frumpy Nerd". I've seen so many people my age try to actually act like a Regina George or Cher from Clueless or Lili Reinhart's character in Chemical Hearts or the very pretentious Ansel Ergot from TFIOS, and it isn't quite as interesting or funny when it's a real person behaving this way. It also sets some weird standards as to how teen lives should be lived which I personally find odd. Of course more recent coming of age films such as Perks of Being A Wallflower have moved away from tropes and I like those better, and this issue can't really be blamed on the films themselves, but it's still interesting to think about. The added issue of the lack of POC leads is also an issue but basicgorl covers that much better than I can!
if the lead is plus sized, can we she also be poc as well. every time they show plus size women on screen, they are always white. and if poc plus size women are shown on screen, they're a stereotype. as a plus size black girl, its fucking tiring.
Marsai Martin, the youngest daughter on Blackish started her own production company (she's 16 BTW!!!!!!) and she's committed to telling stories about Black youth and non traumatic black stories. One of her shows that's gonna be released soon is about a brown skin roller skater who has sickle cell and her and her brown skin friends start a roller skating team. I love that concept and I can't wait to see more from her
I dreaam of a movie that portrays a brown mexican teenage girl just thriving and living in mexico like me, believe me if you think colorism is bad in the us, you have too see mexican media because you would think youre wathing european tv by all the shades of white they choose. Also they always portray brown people as maids, cholos or uneducated poor people is quite sad. I loved your video tho, lets hope thing change for us woc
You should watch Jane The Virgin !!!! This series is empowering, moving, soooo female gazy, diverse, funny, original, and the mexican culture has its importance ! It is one of the best shows ever made
@@angelzhp totally true ! But they do amazing job at going past them, or even using them in a brilliantly clever way ! Because we aren't gonna lie, there are some stereotypes existing about certain cultures that are somewhat true, we just have to, you know, acknowledge they are just stereotypes that, here, are used to be played off ! Plus, Jane the virgin is inspired by a real telenovela: Juana la virgen, so of course they were gonna be stereotypes lol ! I just never felt like ugh this is so cliché, ugh so not true, watching this show because every time a stereotype is introduced, it is played with very very well !
BasicGorlz: “Do not let a man touch this material: He will ruin it.” Hollywood Exec on his way to enable a craptastic spectacle: “Hate to break it to you, Angel...”
It's more about the lack of diversity, not the message. Saying that the message sucks kind of basically means you're saying that the movie sucks in a way, since the message of a movie is extremely important.
Its not the message or the casting, is that normally this movies are made by white people, of course they Will look for white people in the casting, and if they take poc it would look weird
I’ve felt this hard core especially with all this “horror” movies staring dark black families that’s just shoving our trauma down our throats. I need more feel good content with darker families without having to see them go through the worst possible shit
@@feminine8766 you’re misunderstanding. A lot of the films that overly express (without being the main focus) black peoples struggle go more on the side of “white people suck” instead of “black people are cool too”. I’m black and I wish we could be uplifted without putting down whites. We can be lit together
You are completely right we never see black girls and boys specifically dark skin black girls as leads or romantic interests. I think on TV we do see some, but on the big screen almost never. I would love to see moder stories that have black girl as lead actresses and main protagonist, but it should be done by a black writers specifically black women, because they can write the charecters interesting and complex without making them stereotypes.
One netflix show that I think represents everything you said is “Never Have I Ever”. The main character comes from an Indian family, but the plot doesn’t revolve just around this, the storyline represents her like a normal teenager (because she is!) with normal teenager problems and worries
That too contains lot of cliché of teen drama. Basic plot is same normal girl wants to become popular, love triangle but with different ethnic background.
@@aiswaryabersan7983 You are right, but my point is: she is not treated like an “indian girl” and the story is not about her ethnicity, that’s why is different from other shows
@@aiswaryabersan7983 in a way, i felt like that's what made the show good. it wasn't some serious in-depth analysis of race and class, it was just another stupid teen show which just happened to feature a brown girl. it was normalising representation of brown people, by putting them in a role that's usually strictly reserved for white people.
What really annoys me is when in movies, if a teens goes to there room. It usually means there doing something bad. However is we do that in real life, we just wanna chill in our room but parents think we act just in the movies....smh🤦🏾♀️
also, people, SHE’S NOT SAYING THESE MOVIES ARE BAD NOR IS SHE PUTTING YOU DOWN FOR LIKING THEM!!! HER POINT IS THAT THE LACK OF POC REPRESENTATION IN THE MOVIES OF THIS GENRE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED
Me who loves Mean Girls and Clueless: “I’m okay...” Seriously, tho, this is a pretty interesting opinion! Cant wait for it to premiere Everybody commenting that I was an idiot, I posted this before the premiere started! It’s an interesting opinion to me because they are very popular. Before the video was released, I thought she was saying ALL of them were bad, including these two.
The thing I’ve noticed is that when they do cast a black protagonist it’s mostly those who are mixed or have curly hair and the storyline is always about them having a struggle or dealing with racism
I feel like there are a lot of YA books with teen girls of color as their main lead that could get film adaptations, but it's always the white character books that are chosen
@@platyperri still not enough africans, south americans, east asians and any other foreign group represented. Do better. I want to see Hindi gods portrayed as black women. I want trans kids in commercials. I want every couple shown in advertisements to be interracial. Step it up. None of this would harm the culture of India in any way, right? 🙂
@@welfare_king It's Hindu. And if you bothered to educate yourself on other cultures, you'd know that there are multiple gods/goddesses who are black/dark-skinned, Ma Kali is one example. There have been multiple movies made, depicting them this way. Meanwhile, in your country, you refuse to acknowledge black people as your own countrymen. And you somehow expect this to be similar to the portrayal of our gods. Second of all, I cannot tell you/your movie industry to do anything as I am simply a consumer of its media. But when you fail to recognise the criticism of one of the people of your OWN country, people who you claim have equal rights, then I don't think that is what is to be expected from America, the land of freedom, the country that is supposed to set an example for others. Third, this is in NO WAY similar to foreigners being represented in other country's media. Koreans don't need to bring in black people in their dramas, because answer this - how many black Koreans do you know? (On a separate note, there are some black people in K-pop group's music videos, which pander to an international audience, just for your information) On the other hand, 13.2% of Americans are black, 5.6% are Asian and 18.5% are Hispanic. Would it be so difficult to have non-stereotypical characters of the above races in media? I personally feel it would not. Would it harm anyone in any way or take away anyone's rights if there was more representation ofc on the basis of talent? Highly unlikely. You will now argue that white people are the majority, which is totally okay. In India, 40% of people speak Hindi (IT'S A LANGUAGE, HINDUISM IS A RELIGION) and the rest speak other different languages. There are over 23 recognised languages. Yet, there is enough representation of all of them. Issues like casteism and gender bias are also given a spotlight in Indian movies. Trans people are relatively accepted in India, as per my knowledge. Yes, my country does have its problems, but atleast we acknowledge them instead of trying to push them under the carpet. If you have any other coherent points to raise against the video, I would be open to listening and engaging in a polite debate.
seeing casual representation is so important. a character's struggles do not have to come from their minority. yes, it's important that these stories get told, but i would love to see more stories where a queer/poc character can be themselves without it being a huge deal.
Here me out: songs from folklore for the romantic scenes or moments of character development. And you know the cool aesthetic main character music for the legendary montages.
For me, I think that: - The ‘Mean Girl’ should be East Asian or a South Asian Girl who is out of touch with things happening around her due to her privilege. - The Main Character should be a wholesome but not saccharine dark skinned girl and we don’t indulge in trauma porn (like BasicGorlz suggested). - Token White BFF who is a Pinterest Queen and we make fun of her without being mean-spirited. It’s almost like she writes the jokes and her friend just tells the joke. - The Guy should be cute without being or looking Factory issued. He should be up to do stupid shit like eat junk food late at night or something. - Stop with the trauma porn like she’s a circus act. - Nobody young is issued as a bad person for using the Internet. Take your time to understand how it works if it’s part of a story. - BasicGorlz should make a film, write a book and make great content that I want to watch again and again.
Honestly it’s true. It’s like POC either get to be a side character or they are victims of racism when all people want is normal movies featuring a normal girl. For me as an Asian growing up I never had an issue seeing myself as a lead character and honestly for me I never thought it was a big deal what race the characters were but then “To All the Boys I Loved Before” came out and I was like dang. That movie is good but it also touched me in way no other coming of age movie had and I realized how much having a lead look like me was important. I was 17 when that movie came out and I can’t help but think I wish I had that kind of experience when I was kid watching these type of movies.
I wanna see a friend group that is actually diverse! I want racial/ethnic diversity, body diversity and I wanna see all of them having different yet complimentary interests. Like maybe they’re all in a club and that’s how they meet but they all have different interests as well. And preferably non stereotypical interests. I wanna see people in theatre, auto shop, wood working etc.
As a Latina, I'd love to see more coming of age stories featuring Latin families and cultures WITHOUT the stereotypes. But I can't remember the last time post-2010 I saw a Latina in a leading role or a big supporting role who wasn't sassy or perceived as loud but with no culture included. I'd love for us to occupy more diverse roles in coming of age stories because we're not all from the same country nor do we have the same perspectives and personalities. I also don't want forced representation. There's a TV show currently doing that and it's incredibly annoying to me because it's not natural and each episode seems to center around a minority suffering. We're not always suffering and our struggles don't exist for dramatic effect so YOUR non-POC characters could become woke. Please give us unique perspectives and experiences because we are so much more than our struggles and our stereotypes.
hear me out, the asian mean girl actually likes the main and that’s why she’s so mean because she can’t accept that she’s gay (kind of like a dave karofsky situation)
when did the video say those movies were bad. never... all she said was that as a poc there is no spot to see herself in coming of age movies. everyone looks stupid trying to defend movies that were never attacked in the first place. a lot of yall are not getting the point like ?? her opinion is not controversial lol, there’s no controversy in wanting representation
gurlllll i understand this completely!!! literally, representation for myself (female Asian Muslim) is non-existent. (except for marriage, or terrorism) :/ I just want a coming of age film that actually showcases regular teen problems and relatable too.
Me too and I also want to see a Pakistani male love interest like As a Pakistani male myself we are not represented enough or are represented horribly.
@@mustafabashir2002 blinded by the light is a good film you should check out. I watched it at cinema and damn i remember crying at the end. But yes there needs to be more done it’s just tragic at this point.
i too, dislike coming of age movies. they should focus less on needing a romantic partner at least in my opinion. also there should new tropes, the same recycled scripts are killing me
I want this movie so bad, I’m a sucker for the enemies to lovers trope (I think it spelled). We really do need to see more movies with people of color that isn’t used as background prop or “the black best friend”
Another thing I noticed in coming of age movies starring a black female is that she rarely has a romantic relationship with a black man and if she does, the relationship is depicted as abusive or toxic. I would love to see more productions that get rid of this stereotype.
I like coming of age movies but clueless is bad in a 'wtf why is this ok' kinda way. It'll always be weird to me that josh (an eighteen year old) is falling in love with his 15-16 year old ex-step sister but thats just my opinion I guess I cant wait for this video
Netflix is realeasing a show in a week called Shadow and Bone. Both of the two woman leads are asian: Jessie Mei Li who is half chinese and Amita Suman from Nepal. It looks great!. I have high expectations. If you like fantasy you should check it out.
on board with everything except for the white love interest bcs we can do MUCH better (did y'all see Nico Hiraga in Moxie??? hello!!!) and i'll pass on including taylor swift in any soundtrack bcs she's done nothing for our community and doesn't care that she has a huge nazi fanbase (which she 100% knows about because she tried to sue the blogger who wrote about it). absolutely sick of the state of coming of age films rn with the ladybird and the book smart, we need CHANGE
@@welfare_king what do you mean?. Your comments just seem to be very out of touch with reality. This society was created and benefits rich white straight, conventionally attractive people and according to the system everyone can fuck off or become side characters with basically no purpose but to serve the main character or use their truama to further the plot. Having movies especially those that are extremely popular with the teenage demographic that represent a more wide range of people who's only defining trait is how horrible their life is would be really great and actually ground breaking because I am sick and tired of seeing people who look like me in movies being sidelined or always having a bad time, we get enough of that in real life.
Yara, Zendaya, and Amandla are all biracial. They don’t even represent black girls, they represent biracial girls. I can’t even see myself in them nor relate to them. They need to stop trying to tell black girls stories through biracial people. We are not the same and that’s ok. Black does not equal biracial. They know how to distinguish a biracial man from a black man but when it comes to black women were forced to share our identity with biracial women?!?!
okay, what if the asian mean girl ends up with the main character? like she gets redeemed and it ticks off the enemies to lovers thing. it'll be sapphic and it'll be an interracial relationship where neither are white.
She’s not trying to say the movies are bad. She’s just bashing the fact that there is an incredible lack of poc or gay people in these coming of age movies and how Hollywood could do Hester and add these people in
Can I request that the friend group includes an accurately portrayed bisexual? None of us walk around constantly performing our sexuality or being “confused”
you made really great points but coming-of-age isnt a genre that big budget major studios have a monopoly on. some of my favorite coming of age films are indie ones, dealing with LGBTQ and poc experience. i think what really needs to happen is these filmmakers get tapped by major studios to produce more of these wonderful films
i completely agree! i don’t think i did a great job of verbalizing this but what i mean is that bigger production studios should be making more of an effort to find diverse stories and fund them
@@basicgorl yep totally. idk why instead of taking work by POC and LGBTQ+ folks and remaking them into white washed versions of their originals, why cant just hire them to make more films like these? i think it's also important that we have someone who isnt a white cishet man as the main executive producer because the producer can really greatly affect the direction of the film. which is why i appreciate the work that whitney had done before, and i guess zendaya is also doing now with her projects where they really involved themselves in the decision making process of these films!
I also feel like a movie with more diversity is waaaay more entertaining to watch than a movie where everyone is white, like thats not what real life looks like😐
@@welfare_king We _are_ talking about american movies. Though there are places in america where there's not a lot of non-white people, there's a large portion of the country that does have poc. @@Vesperad0 even so, America is a predominantly white country, and a lot of the time movies only centre around a limited amount of main characters. I'm manifesting this. And all y'all black gals striving to be filmmakers, screenwriters, storytellers, etc.--I see you, I *hear you* --We gotta stuff like this happen!!! Also, I have a concept to pitch: Black girl coming of age film where the main friend group is different types of black girls: the baddie, the nerd, the alternative, and the spiritualist
Ladybird clueless and mean girls are iconic, I kept hearing about how I should watch booksmart and I still regret watching it, it was the worst coming of age movie, the plot was okay the script was terrible, I hated it
I think a lot of the media only recognizes Black coming-of-age films that are centered around racism, and when filmmakers try to make films that are just about Black people just being, it's not given the same amount of attention/praise Films with young Black leads are either not distributed or promoted properly, which leads to fewer people watching these films. But I would definitely recommend Selah and the Spades (I know this was shown a few times in the video), The Fits, Atlantics, Miss Juneteenth, Crooklyn, The Weekend (2018), and Pillars
What I would like to see is a Italian or Irish girl in a coming to age movie who is OUT of high school balancing life, work, love, her friendships, and family life because I need another movie to relate to
to really talk about it, the idea of coming of age movies are great but in some way there doesn’t seem to be a variety of them.... like i adore booksmart, mean girls, and clueless but at the same time i want something new. i want stories with more diversity and relatability. it’s tiring to hear a story about a pretty white girl’s life all the time. i want more stories where the main character is a minority and goes on adventures with their friends that doesn’t revolve on their community’s trauma or falls into racial streotypes...
You had me at the main character description. I cheered when you said enemies to lovers. I screamed when you said at least 1 Taylor Swift song (August or Cruel Summer would be epic in a coming of age movie)
Wow I highly agree with this! Also I would like to add that please for the love of god include a Latino that is dark or brown skin, not all of us are the stereotypical white heavy accent Latino that is highly aggressive, “carefree”, and doesn’t think before acting.🧍🏽♀️ Also it would be nice to see a Caribbean. That would be very very nice :,)
I absolutely love these kinds of movies, but I completely agree with you. I'd love to see proper diversity in casting, where the lead roles are played by minorities. It's so weird how white these films are, I don't get why in 2021 it's still like this. So weird and stupid.
Honestly, I would love to see a coming of age movie set during university years or young adult years. Not everyone figures out who they are during high school.
Yes thank you for this. I'm tired of movies with a black female lead and the plot is just showcasing their hardships. Like they show all the bad things that happens when people are black but what about the good things. I want to see a movie that shows the good things and yeah u can sprinkle in some bad stuff because that's reality but the whole movie shouldn't be based on the struggles of being black. I want to see a movie that has the girl just being normal middle class person. I want to see her having fun at school. Normal relationship with her family Etc . Idk if what I said makes sense but yeah
I dream of the day POC woman will get a coming of age love story that doesn't invlove , segregation, immigration, racism, zero white savoirs, basicly any trauma/struggle movies im tired of seeing us not struggle especally black woman.
Okay so you've given us the ingredients, let's make some recipes: [Protagonist] is a choir singer at the church her dads a minister at, but when her music teacher at school recommends she goes to watch the auditions for a music school in the city, she falls in love with pop/rap/(idk whatever genre of musicians we manage to secure for the soundtrack lol). [Love interest] who was one of the auditions, runs into her afterwards and invites her to a weekly jam. They go weekly and she truly hones her craft in a way she wasn't able to before. The Big Conflict happens because the next/last round of auditions is on a Sunday, when she's supposed to be singing in her dad's choir. themes: finding your own path, faith, and how high expectations make communication hard [Protagonist] and her [Best Friend] are two class clowns, who are a little underappreciated by their peers, but have always had each other's backs. When [New Person] moves to school and is super quick-witted, smart, dry, and cutting, [Protagonist] gets a cold from them and misses school for a week. When she comes back, [Best Friend] and [New Person] are making the entire class laugh, and are now inseparable. [Protagonist] feels incredibly blind-sided by this and jealous, acting out and then not replying to [Best Friend's] messages. The problem is, is that its three weeks until [Best Friend's] birthday, when their whole family will be coming in and [Protagonist] has to make a speech. The movie follows those three weeks, the drama, the comedy, [Best Friend] revoking their invitation, the apology, and then them making up. The final scene is The Speech, The Party, and lessons being learnt. Themes: jealousy, different types of humour, and The Importance of Friendship [Protagonist] has just moved to the school she used to go to five years ago. Having spent five years away, everyone is different, and her friend group split up whilst she was away. She doesn't want to 'pick sides' but its impossible to hang out with any of them without the others feeling upset. I haven't thought of how the plot progressives or resolves but I have a lot of uni homework to do lol so I'll end there.
Or a gay character that’s whole personality isn’t being gay. Like (Riverdale’s storyline may suck but you have to give them credit) Cheryl yeah you see her going through stuff with her sexuality but that’s not what she’s known for. She’s known for being the rich mean girl that has family issues, lots of trauma, and can actually be really nice to her friends and the people she loves and cares for. Toni is known for being a baddie that happens to actually care a lot for people. (Ps: I know Riverdale isn’t a coming of age movie it was just one of the first things I thought of)
an idea i had was the trope of the nerdy sidekick of the protagonist that is in love with the popular girl, but make it wlw or nblw. Sort of like sams friend from a cinderella story being in love with the popular girl? idk how to explain it lol but As a bisexual woman it would be so cool to see that dynamic represented in a coming of age movie. Also it would be great for all of the coming of age/rom com tropes and stuff to be in the movie!anyways your idea was literally perfect and I hope hollywood sees this.
I like that. It subverts expectations, and I did like that part of a Cinderella story. It was such a shame that the relationship between those two was thrown away so easily because of the “one dimensional evil blonde girl” trope. I’d like to see some character growth in the mean girl more. That subversion of expectations is what grounded mean girls and made it stand out as a movie.
Honestly I just want a movie with multiple black dark skin black girls (non mixed) as the main cast like them being friends and them going through highschool and dealing with their love life and life in general together and I want them to have a Asian boyfriend a black boyfriend, a white/latino boyfriend and a black girlfriend.
A coming of age movie with a darkskin black girl as the main character would be amazing. I also wish that more teen dramas had more black main characters instead of tokens.
lets not forget our latina kweens, we are pretty much never the main character and if we are part of the film we're always seen as the stereotypical latin with a sassy attitude being the only personality trait
I’m just waiting for a coming of age movie that has a darkskin black girl as the lead and has regular teen problems that doesn’t center around racism.
It's really all i'm asking for.

@@ninjanibba4259 I meant "coming of age people" as teenagers and young adults, 'cause that's the main public those movies are supposed to address

I wanna write a coming of age book hahaha that’s interesting that’s this video comes out
Hey me too
Also why is the Asian character always adopted or half white, like why can’t they just have Asian parents??👀
Bro you just said exactly what I was always thinking!
okay, what if the asian mean girl ends up with the main character? like she gets redeemed and it ticks off the enemies to lovers thing. it'll be sapphic and it'll be an interracial relationship where neither are white.
This whole video is just truth! You always have such good videos I love watching them while doing my makeup.
miss gorl. don’t do my childhood like that😭🙈
She’s not trying to say the movies are bad. She’s just bashing the fact that there is an incredible lack of poc or gay people in these coming of age movies and how Hollywood could do Hester and add these people in
Can I request that the friend group includes an accurately portrayed bisexual? None of us walk around constantly performing our sexuality or being “confused”
I think Rielle Downs (portrayed Charlotte on Henry danger) as the lead of a coming of age movie would be exquisite
mean girls and clueless r so good but i cant wait to see the vid 👀
you made really great points but coming-of-age isnt a genre that big budget major studios have a monopoly on. some of my favorite coming of age films are indie ones, dealing with LGBTQ and poc experience. i think what really needs to happen is these filmmakers get tapped by major studios to produce more of these wonderful films
i completely agree! i don’t think i did a great job of verbalizing this but what i mean is that bigger production studios should be making more of an effort to find diverse stories and fund them
@@basicgorl yep totally. idk why instead of taking work by POC and LGBTQ+ folks and remaking them into white washed versions of their originals, why cant just hire them to make more films like these?
i think it's also important that we have someone who isnt a white cishet man as the main executive producer because the producer can really greatly affect the direction of the film. which is why i appreciate the work that whitney had done before, and i guess zendaya is also doing now with her projects where they really involved themselves in the decision making process of these films!
also in the movie i want them to add a hijabi that isnt portrayed as the oppressed girl that takes her hijab off her a white boy
Why did I immediately think of the show Elité, I see that a lot where a Muslim girl is always much more liberated and free after taking it off.
I also feel like a movie with more diversity is waaaay more entertaining to watch than a movie where everyone is white, like thats not what real life looks like😐
That really depends on where you live. So you're telling me Finland isn't 95% white/european?
@@welfare_king We _are_ talking about american movies. Though there are places in america where there's not a lot of non-white people, there's a large portion of the country that does have poc. But just because they're a small group of people in another country doesn't mean they don't exist, after all nationalities can either be part of or separate from ethnicities/race.
@@Vesperad0 even so, America is a predominantly white country, and a lot of the time movies only centre around a limited amount of main characters. These types of movies aren’t cookie-cutter where absolutely every person is white. You can see POC walking around in the background a lot of the time. That is pretty realistic as far as I can tell.
This!!!
@@xxxmaysilssss690 of course that’s true, but these movies fail to make poc as main characters, or make them as characters without stereotypes.
the fact is that I have to legit search up "american movies with POC leads" because it is so hard to find one like so hard
I'm manifesting this. And all y'all black gals striving to be filmmakers, screenwriters, storytellers, etc.--I see you, I *hear you* --We gotta stuff like this happen!!! Also, I have a concept to pitch:
Black girl coming of age film where the main friend group is different types of black girls:
the baddie, the nerd, the alternative, and the spiritualist
omg a premiere!!😭💗
As an upcoming filmmaker, this is giving me so many ideas for projects:)
Ladybird clueless and mean girls are iconic, I kept hearing about how I should watch booksmart and I still regret watching it, it was the worst coming of age movie, the plot was okay the script was terrible, I hated it
I think a lot of the media only recognizes Black coming-of-age films that are centered around racism, and when filmmakers try to make films that are just about Black people just being, it's not given the same amount of attention/praise
Films with young Black leads are either not distributed or promoted properly, which leads to fewer people watching these films. But I would definitely recommend Selah and the Spades (I know this was shown a few times in the video), The Fits, Atlantics, Miss Juneteenth, Crooklyn, The Weekend (2018), and Pillars
What I would like to see is a Italian or Irish girl in a coming to age movie who is OUT of high school balancing life, work, love, her friendships, and family life because I need another movie to relate to
Ok ngl as a poc who wants to be a future film director, I would be so down with this and honestly have actually thought about this for a while.
It also kills me how they hire GROWN people. Like I got a mortgage and kids grown. Can we have people our age?
IM SO EXCITED I CANT WAIT!
Okay but I actually really enjoy The Hate U Give so I hope there isn’t too much criticism in that one🥺
Omg, I love that movie
to really talk about it, the idea of coming of age movies are great but in some way there doesn’t seem to be a variety of them.... like i adore booksmart, mean girls, and clueless but at the same time i want something new. i want stories with more diversity and relatability. it’s tiring to hear a story about a pretty white girl’s life all the time. i want more stories where the main character is a minority and goes on adventures with their friends that doesn’t revolve on their community’s trauma or falls into racial streotypes...
You had me at the main character description. I cheered when you said enemies to lovers. I screamed when you said at least 1 Taylor Swift song (August or Cruel Summer would be epic in a coming of age movie)
Okay... Will definitely be tuning in
Wow I highly agree with this! Also I would like to add that please for the love of god include a Latino that is dark or brown skin, not all of us are the stereotypical white heavy accent Latino that is highly aggressive, “carefree”, and doesn’t think before acting.🧍🏽♀️
Also it would be nice to see a Caribbean.
We need a Rina Sawayama song in this soundtrack
Okay so you've given us the ingredients, let's make some recipes:
[Protagonist] is a choir singer at the church her dads a minister at, but when her music teacher at school recommends she goes to watch the auditions for a music school in the city, she falls in love with pop/rap/(idk whatever genre of musicians we manage to secure for the soundtrack lol). [Love interest] who was one of the auditions, runs into her afterwards and invites her to a weekly jam. They go weekly and she truly hones her craft in a way she wasn't able to before. The Big Conflict happens because the next/last round of auditions is on a Sunday, when she's supposed to be singing in her dad's choir.
themes: finding your own path, faith, and how high expectations make communication hard
[Protagonist] and her [Best Friend] are two class clowns, who are a little underappreciated by their peers, but have always had each other's backs.
Themes: jealousy, different types of humour, and The Importance of Friendship
[Protagonist] has just moved to the school she used to go to five years ago.
That subversion of expectations is what grounded mean girls and made it stand out as a movie.
this!! i agree 100 percent, i think some depth in the mean girl trope would be so cool.
Make your own movies. Black girls are not included in Latino culture or films.
theres such thing as afro-latinx, such as dominicans and puerto ricans...
Girl, you're inspiring me to get back into writing rn, I wanna make this story and draw it out too!!!
