There are two sides to every story. Many people from former Ottoman territories today still resent the Ottomans. However it's the same with any empire, the Ottomans were no worse than anyone else (in fact they were probably a lot better).
I don't see why people can't have a balanced view, instead it's either over-glorified, white-washing about how wonderful the Ottomans were, or over-the-top hatred and ranting and raving about how bad they were. How about we just accept them for what they were? Nearly every nation throughout history, if it had the military and diplomatic ability, expanded and created empires. It wasn't because they were evil, it was simply because they could. The Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Mongolians, Arabs, Ottomans, British..... they did what is human nature, with the advantage they had at the time. Let go of the guilt, admire and respect, but also learn for the future not to make the same mistakes.

+tosgem This is all well and good, but the fact remains that some countries under Ottoman rule suffered a lot because of cultural and religious differences. Had they been conquered or under the rule of some other christian nation - I can only speak for Hungary in this case - the strain inflicted might have been less.
For about 150 years, the country was a buffer zone for Austria and the Ottoman. During this period - as far as I'm aware - the population under Ottoman rule had declined drastically because those who ruled them wanted to get as much wealth from them as possible, since the land belonged to the sultan and they only used it for a limited time.
I have no hate for the turkish people of today, but that doesn't mean I have to like what happened in the past.

    • @meine0wenigkeit

Of course it wasn't all gloom or doom. But at least for the christians under the ottoman rule it was mostly not a very pleasent thing.
Paying higher taxes, not being allowed basic rights. Then there was the blood tax (taking of christian children) and also regular kidnapping of christian brides. So much, that in some regions there were only weddings when there were at least half a dozen couples, in order to be able to fend off any such attempt.
It is no coincidence that those parts who stayed the longest time under ottoman rule are less developped even till today (at least in Europe).

Ottomans sick man period is like Todays USA. If people remembered fondly of the Ott Empire, there wouldn't be middle east like todays mess. And it was against the will of colonialists. There was even jewish disguising in muslim clothes and rebelling against state asking for Sheria law rule in modern Turkey. That level of oxymoron and manipulation within society, and with no modern media, pulling off games is somehow easier, because people are not informed on subjects during action. Many false propaganda has been carried out. And the peace within society was heavily injured. And all this was caused due to the necessity to centeralize the power in Istanbul. And that was a perfect fit for Europe's dreams. Because whole world was changing towards more and more centeralized states. And that was completely against the nature of the Ott Empire. You can see a similar faith happening to USA today. They get more and more centeralized, populist and one way of being American. And actually thats against the diverse and local culture of USA, more or less every other city is originally different. But now, that trend is changing. Especially, gentrification makes us loose the real history of cities. Everywhere becomes similar, a trendy cafe in china, a trendy cafe in Stockholm, if you just look at the image you cant guess where you are anymore. Americans will also i guess due to that, become a society where fractions fight with each other openly and thus tolerance decaying. Today USA has way heavier international Intelligence activity within its borders, compared to its history. This also was the case in Ottoman Empire, through the end, a huge influx of foreign intelligence services. Because country can not project enough power. Finally there is one more similarity which i think is the main reason for all of the above. Just like North Atlantic trade deal, Pacific trade deal on the way, Ottomans were crumbling under heavy economical give aways, to more competant countries. China and India by itself is like this today against America. And Americans loose more and more their freedom to put the price tag on for their own products. One similar empire that has certain similarity is Ancient China, but throughout History they have evolved to a Nation where a big margin feels connected and similar, unlike history, where every village has its own way of being a buddhist. But they changed that especially with Culture Revolution, some argue that it proves to be useful. But i think that it caused China to become from a poetically beautiful Empire with fine art and culture, to a concrete farm with no oxygen to smell and no taste not pleasurable architecture at all nearly.

All true, but you missed the point. The reason for the Ottoman (and Austrian-Hungarian) empire decline was the change in the creation of wealth. The Ottoman were a trading/agricultural empire the new European empires were industrial based. The Ottoman empire was well placed to take advantage of trade and agriculture but was less well endowed with resources of the new industrial revolution.
Other factors may have contributed and/or exacerbated but the change from trading/agriculture to industrial was the fundamental cause.

And no, not all is true. Get some facts from history that actually took place. Learn the life of Muhammad and you will learn the mind of a Muslim. There is no radical Islam and moderate Islam. There is only 1 Islam. There is no perforation between Muhammad slaughtering all that were non Muslim so Islam could create the Ottoman Empire and Pakistan finally becoming a state 70 years ago after a 1,000 year campaign of genocide against India. It's seamless from one to the other and done by the same faith. Now they create a lie called Palestine and look to gain more land from Israel. There is and never was a Palestine nor a Palestinian from a land called Palestine. Science has already proved that to be a fact.

Your statements are an affront to history and science on the whole and shows a mindset that is completely isolated from real life. It also shows complete uneducated or religious isolation and an oblivious view of subjective facts.
If you read the Old testament you will see the mind of Christians and Jews? so wrath and genocide is allowed? stoning people to death and the keeping of slaves as well?
you are saying all Christians and Jews are like this? BECAUSE THE CHRISTIAN AND JEWISH SCRIPTURES ARE ISLAM'S scriptures. Jesus and Moses are part of Islam, they'r teachings are Islams teachings.

Subjective = "based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions."
Fact = "A fact is something that has really occurred or is actually true. The usual test for a statement of fact is verifiability-that is, whether it can be demonstrated to ... "
Talk about lack of education and logic - there is no such thing as a "subjective fact".

One of the biggest reasons for their decline was the sultans and Islam's growing opposition to science and innovation. The printing press was banned on penalty of death for over 400 years in favour of traditional calligraphy. As a result, literacy rates in the Ottoman Empire remained shockingly low compared to Europe. A sharp contrast with the Islamic golden era where science, mathematics and technology was championed.

Most of Europe were peasants too. The only difference was that the printing press allowed the mass production of books, in particular the Bible. With books now more available to the general public there was a gradual increase in literacy.

Yes. And now in the US we public are captive to 'fake' news and even 'fake' legislation where bills are passed in the last days of an administration merely to have them mitigated by the new administration. Actual legislation is passed on the sly and under cover of a nonsense media storm. The military seems to govern itself with goals of world domination with western expansion exactly the author describes as seen in the failure to take Vienna.
Note the failure of public education here in the US. Note that the numbers of hires from India and China. Note that the wars in the MIddle East and the coming wars in Africa are underwritten by keeping strong men in power by Visa bribes for entire sects and power groups.
The US does not have a single tech improvement to offer. We are spinning drone warfare and selling cars. Cel phones are radios. Fusion will never happen. The rest of the world is actually practicing solar while we lag. Clean water will define the future survivors lives.

+Aleksia min skatt USA is an empire, How ? you may ask.. sweetie, the ultimate goal of any empire used to invade, conquer and then pillage the resources of the invaded land. this is old school, thing of the past when you could not have US dollar as the only currency for international trade enforced by various means, only currency to trade oil because US declares a war on them. Saddam is an example. World bank and IMF to subjugate entire countries through their corrupt leaders. When you get a chance, read the book titled "Confessions of the economic hitman" by John Perkins and you will understand the game. you will understand how it is being done in this new world. Once upon a time, America was the greatest country in the world and it is continuously going down in pretty much every field. There are several reasons for it, one is Americans being in denial of this reality. I am an American myself and I do not take any pleasure in saying all of this rather I am bleeding from inside.

Something that has to be said: the Ottomans were not idiots. They took gunpowder, made it a weapon and used Christians as the primary soldiers given their penchant for loyalty. They took advantage of their geographic position to profit off the trade between Europe and Asia. During WWI they hired help from Germany to get their military on par with the rest of the world. The problem is that the culture couldn't translate to the modern era.

This got the Portugese to work on long distance naval travel, eventually setting up a trading empire in Africa and the Indian Ocean, and then the Americas were discovered by the Spanish. But I don't know that much about this stuff, so it may not be correct.

30 years ago I took a course in economic history, I remember the professor explaining that once the industrial revolution occurred in Britain, the technology was smuggled all over Europe (it was illegal to export plans of looms), except for the Ottoman Empire, because the commercial laws in the Empire made it impossible to set up profitable businesses.

  • @JaLiberal
    @JaLiberal 8 лет назад +17

I agree that economic reasons of the fall were the main ones but there were other factors.
Ottoman Empire was constantly at war. There were numerous wars with Austria, Poland and Russia that continually drained manpower and wealth of the empire in 17th and 18th century. Those war are not known (because they were stalemate or minor gains for European powers) but if you read how many people participated and died in them you would be astonished.

The religious minorities within the Ottoman Empire were protected by law, and religious non-Muslim minorities had to pay religious tax called Cizye in order not to serve in the Ottoman army. The only way for a non-Muslim to avoid the Cezye tax was by converting to Islam.

Janissaries was not recruited, they were abducted as small children from christian parents. In Serbia it was called "Danak u krvi" (Tax in blood).
Balkan (Byzant) was prosperus before Muslim came here by force. If there were no Otomans here this would be nice place to live today, nothing less then Italy or at least Spain today.Instead of that in Serbia, for instance, you can find many buildings from 12.,13. or 14.century and Turks has practicly build nothing for 300 years. Under their rule christian people in balkans where nothing but the slaves. Old churches was demolished, no rights where given, no culture no literacy was allowed...

Alpha Zey Very true. If the gradual decline of the Ottoman Empire could be traced back to one single event it would definitely be Suleiman the Magnificent's execution of his most intelligent and capable son Mustafa. This single act (which Suleiman later greatly regretted) is what caused his least capable son Selim to suceed him as Selim II who was a drunkard and a fool by most accounts. Selim II was the first of several weak, foolish and ineffective sultans (his son Murad III, Ibrahim, Mustafa I) that lead to a domino effect of social, economic and military decline in the Ottoman Empire. Luckily in between the period of gradual decline there were a few stronger, intelligent, and more capable sultans that temporarily halted the decline such as Murad IV, Ahmed I, and Suleiman II but unfortunately it wasn't enough.

As a free marketeer/ classical liberal, the piece about the black market sourcing corruption in the bureaucracy and ultimate dissolution of the market and state makes a lot of sense to me; all too prevalent today. Nationalist movements in Serb, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Bosniak, Albanian, Armenian and even Arab lands were a big component of how the Ottomans lost their footing. Internal strife and conflicts have peppered almost all of their 18th and 19th history and have contributed in a big way to their decline

The reason it was ahead was because they inherited the whole of Byzantine learning and history. You are making it sound like the Ottomans developed this civilization. The Ottomans were a nomadic people. They didn't know how to live in cities and didn't know how to develop urban technology. The fact that they conquered the Byzantines (the empires more or less have the same footprint) is responsible for their achievements. Their architecture is completely based on the Byzantine prototype. The reason their empire started to fall was because there was nothing left to conquer, and as a result, income and development by conquest ceased.

TURKS: The Turkish tribes on the northeast borders of Iran had been nominally converted to Islam in the late tenth century.A tribal coalition under the leadership of Selchuqid clan was formed in the early eleventh century.Defeading the Ghaznavid Iranian army at the battle Dandanqan in 1040,Selchuqid Turks conquered Iran, entering Baghdad in triumph in 1055 as the restores of Sunni orthodoxy against shites Buyids and Fatimids.
Their armies crushed the Byzantine army at the battle of Manzikert in 1071,and occupied Syria and Palestine by 1078.
Selchuqid Turks had succeeded in stopping the Byzantine and Fatimid advance, thereby reestablishing Sunni ideology as the dominant political force in the Near East. The Turkish invasion of the Near East was a mixed blessing, causing a great deal of social and economic disruption. however Turks in many ways revitalized the Islamic world militarily. From the twelfth century on Turkish sultans and warbands formed the core of Islamic military power, leading the Islamic conquest of Anatolia, the Balkans and India.
CRUSADERS: Since the original Islamic conquest in the seventh century, many Christians and Muslim religious leaders saw warfare between Muslims and Christian kings as a type of holy war.The military weakness of western Europe left it in no position to oppose the Muslim conquest of the Holy land,Spain, and Sicily. However, the decline of the Islamic world was contemporary with revival of European economic and military power in the eleventh century.Beginning in that century,Spanish Christians initiated the Reconquista,a five-century war against Spanish and North African Muslims.Norman adventurers conquered Sicily from Muslims between 1061 and 1091. The Major European assault against the Islamic world, however, was the Crusades.Between 1095 and 1291 seven major armies from Europe repeatedly invaded Syria,Palestine, and Egypt in attempts to capture and hold the holy city of Jerusalem.Although ultimately unsuccessful, the Crusades brought two centuries of turmoil to the Near East, which culminated in the rise of jihad ideology and militaristic Islamic dynasties which ousted the Europeans from the Near East, taking the holy war into the Balkans in the form of the Ottoman Turkish conquest.

Interestingly, the symptom can be seen on america today with donald trump... The Ottoman is an empire that live for a thousand of years, you can't judge them like you judge a person... I find it very interesting that it is almost impossible especially back then to see the sign of your own decline until it brought to the forefront by some huge disasters. I find that most important battles in history are usually only important because of what happens after the battle, meaning that no strong state can be defeated in a single battle. I think the best example of this Manziert, the battle was a crushing defeat but it was only by exploiting the disunity of the empire following it that the Turks were able to bring the Byzantines to the edge of destruction.

i think it is vice versa. Roman empire didnt fall because of the barbarian invasions, it fell because it was rapidly declining by that point, and it was going to go down. Barnarians finished the weak Western empire. same with the ottomans. A central powers victory would not prevent the collapse of the empire. it was rapidly declining anyway, and arabs were destined to revolt. At best it would delay the inevitable for twenty more years.

I don't see anything here that most historians today would consider controversial. The Turks were demonized by earlier historians, for whom their outstanding traits were militarism and religious fanaticism. But if we compare them to Europeans of the same period (for example during the Inquisition or the 30 Years War), they were not so different, and possibly more enlightened. They could certainly not have ruled so huge an empire so long simply by force. They won over large populations, many of them non-Muslims who preferred ‘Better the Turkish Turban than the Papal Tiara’, as the proverb had it. The choice was not between Muslim despotism and Christian freedom, as we often see things these days, but between different forms of tyranny, of which the Christian sort was sometimes more oppressive. Non-Muslims served both in the army and in government offices, and some enjoyed great influence, as one may read, for example in "History of the Turkish Jews and Sephardim" by Elli Kohen. The Ottoman Empire suffered many of the same problems as its neighbors, the Austrian Empire and the Russian Empire: Huge corruption and inefficiency, together with the awakening nationalism of subject peoples and a lagging technology, which made them vulnerable to the rising powers of Western Europe: England, France and Germany. All three empires left the historical stage together, which was no coincidence. The time of empires was over, a fact already lamented by that famous imperialist, Rudyard Kipling, in his poem "Recessional" (1897). For further study of the conflict between the Ottoman Empire and the West, I recommended Andrew Wheatcroft's book "The Enemy at the Gate".

You're wrong anyway. At its maximum extent the Umayyad Caliphate controlled 15 million sq.km. In 1595, the Ottomans ruled 19.9 million sq. km. The discrepancy in population must have been even greater.

By 19th century (under pressure from the European powers) the Ottoman enacted several laws that made all the peoples equals. This equality later led to an unequal economic and social system. And eventually this contributed to the ethnic tensions. As for the French and British, nobody "saves" anyone in geopolitics. The French and the British needed to keep the Ottoman-Russian balance, or face an even more powerful Russian Empire. It was all part of the politics.

What an idiotic liberal you are. You must be all of 20. It wasn't Bushes war it was everyones war and almost everyone including 99% of the Democrats didn't just support it they demanded it you stupid child. Additionally most of Americas debt is owned by America itself and if you had a brain in your entire body you'd know that. What is it with you liberals and facts anyway? You're all so full of shit.

The very first statement is "At its peak (which was in 1600s) It was ahead of its competition in science size science military and culture"
In terms of size the Spanish empire in the 1600s was larger than the Ottoman Empire. Spain controlled Mexico Argentina Columbia Peru Chile Bolivia etc
Science? lol that one thing the ottoman lack behind in. After Constantinople was conquered all the Greek scholars left the city and moved to Italy. This sparked the Renaissance from the 14th to the 17th century, and is regarded as the cultural bridge between the Middle Ages and modern history. It started as a cultural movement in Italy (not in the Ottoman Empire) in the Medieval period and later spread to the rest of Europe, marking the beginning of the Modern age. The Ottoman Empire didn't reform only after the European did.
Military. Ok that's one thing the Ottoman Empire was known for.
Culture. The ottoman always adopted European culture. When they took over the Byzantine empire they adopted Byzantine architecture and customs. They even named themselves the 3rd Roman Empire. When Western Europeans began to modernize the sultan Suleiman I adopted European customs.

was it a similar malaise that affected the byzantine empire? Did geography dictate the nature of the state?

  • @A2Kaid

The Ottoman Army was not made up of Christian and Jews. It was made up of Muslims. Christians and Jews were mostly exempt as many of them paid the Jizya tax. The Janissary corp of the Ottoman army was made up of Christian converts to Islam, so they were no longer Christians. The Ottoman army was however a multi-ethnic army with Turks, Anatolians, Bulgarians, Greeks, Albanians, Croats, Hungarians, and later Arabs, etc.

      Evil Snake
The Janissary corp yes but the Ottoman army conscripts were Muslims by birth and were mostly ethnic Turks up until the 16th century.

the janassary were young boys taken from many ethnic groups muslims & christians mostly exept turks raised to be ofc muslims and fighted they were mainly greeks armenians and people from the caucausus
they were never turks it's the same concept of mamluks in egypt and ghulams in persia except the mamluks were slaves the janissary were not

      Hiwa Joe
janissarys where raised muslims they where muslims, and they where not the entire army, they where a small elite group

    • @abd-al-haqal-haqiqi6981
      @abd-al-haqal-haqiqi6981 10 лет назад

mehmet tafa ofc they are muslim they were trained since young age to be muslim just like what ISIS do now
and they were the main core of the army
and with the small group of turkish cavalry
real turks never fighted on foot it is considred a shame to fight on foot
that's why the Ottomans invested in the janissary foot soldiers

the turks stole the byzantine architecture. And the Ottoman empire was not the only multicultional empire

    • @basilb2007

Douwe van Netten actually ottoman empire was the very first of its kind. America today is modelled after the ottomans. All the best scientists used to go to ottoman empire because that was the land where mathematics and science was flourishing at the time while europeans were hanging from trees. Just like now usa is where the modern world is flourishing in science and technology while middle east is getting bombed. I'm not biased like you. We have to accept facts.

Douwe is right in that the Ottoman Empire wasn't the first one to be multicultural. There were others before that. The Persian Empire comes to mind.

I like it. I had heard that they couldn't keep up technologically but I didn't know that the primary cause was economic in nature. Interesting to see how money and the gradual freezing of the class system played a part as well. Too bad you didn't cover their ultimate defeat. Morally, I can't say any empire was good. But in terms of sheer power and prestige, the Ottomans were right up there.

Especially the reforms of the Janissary Corps inflicted tremendous damage to the empire. Disliked Sultans were simply put out of power and much more favourable Sultans were brought to the throne. They terrorized the empire for their own agendas. A pity that the Sultans didn't stay strong and kept them in their places.

I don't see why it's be flagged as inappropriate. I'm not sure if that's a decision by an algorithm or a human being, but it needs to be changed.
