@@zuli427 um no... not everything rainbow related means lgbtq+. If you go look at 'rainbow' lyrics, it's all about achieving your dreams and not giving up while doing so despite all the obstacles. And that probably depicts that chaeyoung had to go through many rough challenges before becoming what she is now.
Another fun fact: “Make Me Go” is about a female killer in a movie she watched in the plane. While still in the plane she got bored and the rest is history...
This is why one can't just judge Twice based on their titles tracks. Yes, those tracks slap, but you only get a good look at the real Twice through their B-sides in my opinion.
This honestly goes for most Kpop groups too. Since the title tracks have to be perfectly polished for the public, have to sell well, and also be enjoyable to the public, the companies are more likely to take that into their own hands. But Bsides are where groups tend to shine the most.
Mine too. I used to say that Red Velvet had the best song library in Kpop even though I've been a stan of Twice since Sixteen, however they keep putting out great music and now their library is as good as anyones.
Some people forget that Twice has been writing lyrics for years now and it's incredible that not only their music sound evolved but also their writing with it. If I remember correctly I read that Korean fans said that Up No More's lyrics are very very good. If you're not involved in producing music it can be difficult to write lyrics but they made it work so far and if they get the opportunity to co-produce (which I'm sure they will since some members have expressed interest in it) some songs I can imagine their writing will get even better.
No doubt that TWICE are one step closer to co-producing their songs. They sometimes talk how they create/contributethe the rhythm/melody of their songs
I’ve noticed how fans cant shut up about male idols writing their own songs and how “original” and “real” they are bit when it comes to a “cute” female group like twice they dont give them the same appreciation. Double standarttt
thats because those fans are hyping up their faves, why would fans that stan other groups praise twice for songwriting when twice have onces who can do that for them and praise them?
@@giaaa1278 Ofcourse there's nothing wrong with hyping up ur faves but discrediting others in such a conversation (I've seen this esp. happening with twice) is completely and utterly wrong. There's always haters claiming that twice just follows their company instead of doing stuff of their own when that's the complete opp. even tho this is rare compared to GG's like Blackpink and momoland( i don't think they have member written songs except for lovesick girls for bp,but I'm not sure ,ur more than welcome to correct me). Sorry I bantered😅. I hope u understood the diff.
@@queenjeongyeon4636 i feel like twice is the perfect example of letting a group of personalities loose in the world and getting lucky that they all worked out. I mean, what would jyp have done if even one of their personalities later turned out...questionable. But no, we know them to at least some extent, and the world loves them for it. And that show of character reflects in their music and in their performances. like when i watch them, you know they are just the closest of friends who love each other so much. the same cannot be said about many groups in the world, male or female.

It's wonderful how they all come together to form perfection.
people seem convinced that twice is just a poppy bubblegum group of nine girls who just sing the songs they’re given, but the reality is so far from that. the lyrics, topics, everything is incredible. all of these girls are unbelievably talented and do not get nearly enough credit for their skills.
This video along with the "How Twice Revitalized Girl Pop", are so necessary to the kpop community. Musically speaking Twice is one of the best in the girl group game, alongside f(x) and Red Velvet. And the fact that the members have such a significant participation on the making is really something to be amazed of. People don't give Twice the credit they deserve.
What's more frustrating is many Kpop stans limiting TWICE impact & success with just Pervy men fetishizing the cute girls and thus they are getting the massive sales Many people don't understand TWICE have evolved away from that narrative & bubble yet people still put them in that same bubble
@@Sivzram I'm sure there are men who fetishize female idols who do cute concepts but it can't be all or even most of them. The concert vids I've seen are just fanboys vibing and getting excited to hear their favorite song by korea's most popular girl group. Haters just wanna discredit Twices success to anything they can think of and it's annoying 🙄
@@Kenelope_kelly Exactly and sadly all the female idols regardless of their concepts get fetishized but only TWICE gets the flame cause they selling so well just to discredit their impact as if whole of SK did not vibe to their songs like CHEER UP & TT They are even popular af in SK GP which still many groups can't relate

Twice is so misjudged even in the kpop community it's ridiculous. They are a group of such smart and talented girls. If only people would dive a little deeper before giving their opinion on them. It's great to have someone so well spoken and perceptive like you, talk about them. Great content as usual. ❤ Edit - I would love it if you would do a video like this about BTS. I love their lyrics so much, it'd be great to hear your thoughts on them.
I hate it when other fandoms look at twice like they are just superficial and one-dimensional because they rlly aren’t. Twice has a reputation of being more of a traditional girl group, so ppl still have this connotation that their music is shallow and meaningless despite twice progressing
Jihyo writes ABOUT the experience so we could relate Chaeyoung writes her OWN experience for us to follow along the journey Nayeon writes FOR US so we could go and get our own experience
this is just a comment about dahyun’s lyrics in queen but I absolute adore how the song sounds a bit like a Broadway theatre style track and she constantly makes references to putting on ‘just a show!’ or a performance (but ultimately telling u to ditch the false pretences and embrace your uniqueness and feel confident because you’re a queen!) the laughing sound effect in one of the prechoruses, the mix of almost conversational adlibs (particularly in the bridge) and adlibs that are clearly there for dramatic effect... god queen is just such an amazing song and there’s so much to unpack from it
I personally find Nayeon's writing style the most interesting among the members’. Most of the time, she writes with something or someone specific in mind. Chaeyoung, Onces, specific themes, etc. And her lyrics are ones that can be interpreted in many ways. Like Rainbow; some fans think it’s written towards the lgbtq community, others think it is of accepting oneself. Make me go too, some think it has a sexual theme, others view it on a criminal aspect, and its lyrics were inspired by a criminal movie. The fact that she can make everyone have their own perspective on the lyrics she writes, shows too much of her writing style.
If you're such a fan of style song writing then Jihyo would be more interesting. Nayeon uses better form than than Jihyo while still being a style writer.
One thing I really love about TWICE is their passion for music, you can really see them wanting to contribute to the artistry of their albums. Especially Chaeyoung, even composing a song and putting creative input on MVs (she proposed the projector idea for ICSM!). It's amazing how much love they carefully put into their craft and it really touches me as a fan. Twice really are artist of the year material.
So it sounds like Jihyo writes lyrics without thinking about how it will be sung, where as Chaeyoung writes with a deliberate melody or beat that she is trying to achieve?
This is VERY possible! Usually when you write lyrics with a strong form (i.e. Chaeyoung) where you heavily focus on rhythm and rhymes - she most probably have already a melody in mind and chooses the proper words to fill-in the melody ❤ Jihyo's more like "idea - plot - story - lines - lyrics" kind of writer. 🙏🏻
Yes I think so too. As explained, CY is a form writer so she basically think of the melody too like how she would like it to sound and then she writes lyrics together with that melody. While Jihyo being a style writer focuses more on the lyrics itself like she's telling a story. Both are really good and since they contrast each other, I look forward to them writing another song together.
Kpopies are underestimating Twice saying that they don't deserve the fame&success because they are not stable enough they think that twice are just a bunch of cute girls. They know nothing, being a artist does not just revolve around being a good singer it's more than that, its way more deeper.
@@crunchygowon3681 yes, they improve a lot I wish jype would let them use their natural voice and normal range I can clearly see their hardwork the problem here is instead of giving twice a proper vocal training and rest they give them tons of work. I feel bad for momo her precious voice....
Yeah it's kind of reminiscent to it since both tend to use subtext when writing about some kind of lesson or life struggle, and using a situation when doing so. The difference is that Taylor values sound a bit more, and like mera said jihyo's weakness is balancing between sound and lyrics.
Also she uses indirect messages like taylor for example "i dont wanna be up no more" direct word for insomnia or tiredness instead of saying "im tired imma just lay"
People praise other groups so much for their work as producers, composers and lyricists but no one outside of Twice’s fandom ever talks about how the girls are really good lyricists and have had a creative hand in their music for a while now
So in short we need: Chaeyoung x Jihyo Nayeon x Sana Jeongyeon x Momo As writing duos And damitzu solo items to further show us their induvidual styles
Yep Chaeyoung and Jihyo are the most talented. They should be a duo, Chaeyoung being the main rapper and Jihyo being the main vocalist obviously. And Nayeon. Chaeyoung, Jihyo, and Nayeon are the most talented in Twice.
I think I really like Jihyo's writing style, it reminds me a lot of Taylor Swift. Subtext always really gets me, because it is like diving into a story and you are the protagonist, you feel what the protagonist feels. It's also different for everyone, but also always intense for everyone.
its really interesting to come back to this video 3 years later. back then, chaeyoung and jihyo had the most defined and solid writing styles, and now dahyun and nayeon have been added to their ranks - particularly dahyun who has written songs for i believe almost every single album/ep for twice since eyes wide open. i also think that since the release of zone, jihyo has levelled with chaeyoung in writing - and its cool that both are in the composers club now. also, momo mina and sana have penned songs in their native tongue on their own since this video came out, and all of twice participated in the lyrics to a japanese title track, which is awesomeee!!
This whole video is absolutely cinematic. I love your editing style and as a self-qualified Taylor Swift fan Jihyo's writing reminds me of Taylor Swift. There's a personal touch to those lyrics. In other words there's a narrative to it just like Miss Swift. And I love you for mentioning Chaeyoung. She is the secret weapon of Twice's slow burn discography in my opinion and just like you said I take a look at the credits of my favorite Twice song ✨Boom✨ there is Chaeyoung. Great video. Keep up the good work.
same here. i’ve been a swiftie since fearless era so when i got into TWICE’s music recently i could immediately see how similar jihyo’s and taylor’s writing styles are to each other, especially the narrative/story telling style
Same. I thought I'm the only one who noticed but looking at the comment section it seems that a lot agreed to the similarities of Taylor and Jihyo's writing style.
I'm so happy someone finally touched on Twice's lyrics. It's honestly great to see how much they improved and every album they get more and more involved in their songs. Also, eyes wide open was one of the best albums of 2020,i will fight everyone on this.
As a person who writes ( I write poetry). I think I relate more with Nayeon's type of writing. Her writing is heavily influenced by her emotions and experiences at the time and you can truly feel the emotion and sincerity in the lyrics.I also believe Sana has the potential to be one of the powerhouse lyricists in TWICE with more experience. I was completely blown away by her lyricism in Do what we like. That's not to say I don't like the other members's writing,I love all of their writings, it's like a peek into who they are as individuals and I love love that. As a fan I am really proud of TWICE's growth both in their sound, performance and writing. In my opinion they are one of the most well rounded groups out there and I am truly excited to see what they have for us in the future.
I really can’t wait to see what else these talented women give us. Twice as songwriters has not disappointed and I enjoyed your in depth analysis of their writing styles. It truly helps me appreciate other members whose style I don’t usually gravitate towards.
@@melissamartinez599 Right!! If i can choose track for Taste of love i will choose First time, i mean beat, lyrics, everything in that song is perfect. Shout out to all member of Twice amazing writing skill
i'm not gonna lie i used to put off listening to twice for a minute bc i assumed their songs are just basic bubble gum cute songs. some of that stemmed from internalized misogyny bc even if they were that, why is that a bad thing? n the rest i was just ill-informed. till some aspects about their music kept pulling me in when i'd see them in compilations or other kpop vids. i think why they work so well and got the success they did is from how INTRICATE their music is from producing to lyricism. it's definitely not surface level whatsoever. songs like signal, tt, and knock knock are some of my favourite songs musically to listen to, because theyre all "cute songs" but all sound SO unique from one another. while signal has an almost club like bass along with robotic techno, tt has a very nolstalgic 80s synth like beat, and then knock knock is amore alternative pop rock track. i think that's honestly why they are as successful as they are. they pull you in with their charisma and catchy hooks and keep you with their lyricisms and melodies. i honestly can't wait to see what twice will bring with a new era they are emerging into.
I'm literally already tearing up this is so embarrassing...I just love chaeyoung so much. She is a true artist and as much as I love her in twice, i absolutely cannot wait until she gets the freedom to shine solo. i would give my everything for a self composed chaeng solo album. the absolute ARTISTRY
Yes same, I love Chaeyoung as a part of TWICE but her talents are being wasted here, she would be much better being a soloist or as part of a sub-unit with a couple other members, maybe Jihyo and Nayeon, or Jeongyeon. She's such an ace, she spits fire, she sings beautifully, she can dance very well, she can draw and paint, she can write and produce a song. She's so talented yet so under appreciated. Not many see her talents but she really is the most talented member. I love her so much, she's an absolute icon, a stereotype breaker, a free spirit, and so multi talented.
twice’s participation is one of the reasons why I stanned twice. The songs they’ve participated are often some of their best, and i genuinely think it’s because it’s not just a song handed down to them, but it’s a song that the girls are able to mould into a song that fits them especially, they’re really able to put their own personalities and emotions into the lyrics and it translates into the entire song as a whole. it’s amazing to see how their lyricism has improved over the years, especially with jihyo and chaeyoung who have written songs within the first year of their debut.
People really don't give TWICE the credit they deserve. They look at their visuals, dance and (arguably) average-ish vocals and slap a generic 'girly' or 'cute' label on them. It's so upsetting to see the girls' insight, passion and creativity go unnoticed
As a poet, I relate a lot to Jihyo's style. I have a penchant for writing long lines that may or may not rhyme. And I use a lot of subtext and metaphors. But I also relate to Nayeon's and Jeongyeon's styles. Dahyun would come in fourth and then Chaeyoung. I'm pants at too much rhythm in my poems. I really like how they're all evolving and becoming such capable writers, anyway. Their styles complement each other quite well.
I think it's easy for people from the outside to see twice and just assume they're just 9 pretty girls who put out a catchy title track with a great dance and just fill the rest of the album with filler b-sides written and assigned by other people. Of course commercial appeal will always be a huge priority, but these girls care about their work and want to challenge themselves creatively through lyric writing and even producing these days. They aren't marketed as "Producer idols" which i actually think is better because they've been given the time to quietly work on their skills and grow into more experienced artists. Even if someone isn't a fan of their music or style, I wish people could at least respect them as top idols who could have constantly worked on expressing themselves better creatively whether that's through choreographing a dance, creating album art, and of course, writing lyrics
To be honest when I listen to a song written by Dahyun I imagine her writing the lyrics and saying to herself "wow, it's so cool" and she gets more charged up. I really like the energy in her songs they have that edge of sassyness that makes me enjoy them even more.
I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of the 2 best lyricists in twice. people already know Chaeyoung is an accomplished writer and has a lot of lyrics under her name, but neglect to give Jihyo the same attention. Jihyo's "Up no More" lyrics alone establishes her potential and sophistication with words. I'm honestly blown away every time by leader-nim's many talentS.
This is awesome, especially because I feel like Twice's contribution to their lyricism is often overlook. It's great hearing someone really go in depth with it. I love Jihyo's style so much, that slight of hand of building such a strong impression of what she is writing about without addressing it directly really appeals to me
Mina and Tzuyu are foreigners so they can take their time and also Tzuyu wrote a song too but it was rejected, Chae said it was cute. Besides the letters Tzuyu writes to fans are really poetic, even when trans in eng I cant wait a song by her. OT9 forever Jeongyeon is back
Dahyun truly blew my mind when i heard Queen for the first time, she's been my ultimate bias since 2017 and i can really feel her personality in the way she wrote the lyrics, it's all so gentle and soft but it has a punch of fun and a great hook that prevents it from being boring. I could easily see her singing it all by herself, it's almost like i can hear her voice through the lines and how she worked on the tones and shapes she gave to the words. She really did an amazing job on Queen
The fact that Queen and Trick It are my 1st and 2nd favorite b-sides in k-pop...Bring It Back is also a masterpiece too!! I hope Dahyun will keep writing her songs because she's so good!! TWICE are very talented in writing!! I love them so much!! And I also hope we'll soon see songs written by Mina and Tzuyu too!!
TWICE's self written songs are some of my favorites B-Sides among their discography. Chaeyoung can't *HANDLE IT* in a relationship, Jihyo feels *UP NO MORE* about sleep deprivation, Jeongyeon's intimacy in *LOVE LINE* , Nayeon's *MAKE ME GO* like a crime, *QUEEN* Dahyun's cheeky showtune, with Sana's desire to *DO WHAT WE LIKE* . Other songs where they had a hand in collaboration with other writers such as Chaeyoung's love for *STRAWBERRY*, Dahyun's *TRICK IT* with white lies, , Momo's chic and sophisticated *LOVE FOOLISH* , Sana wants the music to *TURN IT UP* , Jeongyeon & Chaeyoung created a *SWEET SUMMER DAY* , the new rap added in *Precious Love* remake, with Mina & Tzuyu's help pour their thoughts out at *21:29* pm. I hope they can write and produce a whole album by themselves, just as their senior Wonder Girls have done.
TWICE are famous for their personality and title tracks but I hope more people van appreciate their discography and how the girls are involved in it. They are talented artists and not just idols because they take part in making their music.
@@civilizechhun858 and Girls Like Us? I love that song especially chaeyoung's rap followed by mina's verse towards the end of the song, gives me goosebumps everytime i listen to it. It’s not a coincidence that my favourite twice bside are always member written songs. Sana is reallllly underrated as a lyricist. I would love to hear more from her in the future.
Get Loud i think is the best b track, cause for an empowerment song, its so rare that the cheesy ‘you are strong!!! you are brave!!!’ is absent. its right in the moment, so specific but never mentioning the details of the conflict. It walks us through the hurt, exhaustion, anger and power, and the repeating warning that the antagonist’s cruelty will end in their own downfall, most likely by their victims hands. the simple ‘might get loud’ in a matter-of-fact, low, ominous tone gets the stakes and the intensity of the situation across.
I didn't see this video yet, but I want to thank you. I think we need to talk more about the work of TWICE's member in songwriting - and I know you will do it superbly. They are often overlooked, and I feel it is (at least partially) due to double standards. I have been following K-pop since more than 3 years now, but I just found out they wrote some of their songs!
And that solidifies why they are the greatest K-Pop girl group . Heck there are many popular groups out there. But in terms of doing their art and style in a variery that they are not scared to go out of their comfort zone . Hell yeah.
I like Nayeon and Jihyo's writing the best, but all of them have great sense of writing and each of their styles are good in their own way. Anyways thank you for this thoughtful and inspiring video, I'm in love with your voclabularity and the way you word things, you motivate me to make my own videos too.
Such a great video. Twice is really evolving with their music not only from a sound perspective but also in their lyricism. I do hope in the future that they’re able to produce their own songs (but then I worry about JYP hearing it for a second then denying it like he did JB). All in all, great video
I don't know if anyone has already pointed it out but your intro is incredibly well done. I love the way you manage to make the images and timing of the song form that interesting visual rhythm that they have. Transitions and even colors are so intrinsically connected to the music that they seem to be one. It's just so nice to watch, I feel like it matches perfectly with your channel's content and your way of expressing yourself. Very good job!
I never gave much attention to twice's lyrics before so i'm so happy you made this, talent = twice 😪 and I know people compliment bts lyricism all the time, but I loved the way you explained and analysed the writing styles in this video, so maybe you could think about doing one about them?? Just a sugestion lol

I'm atually amazed on Sana's writing skills (not expecting that much to be honest). but if you think of it, even in giving speeches Sana tends to provide wonderful lines. She has a distinct way of giving a speech like starting it in kinda informal way somehow. And whenever she is asked about her opinion and view about something, she really gives a long and detailed answer
i just finished the video and i agree with basically everything you said. i hope that momo writes more songs in the future because all of the songs that she has co-wrote e.g. love foolish, hot ect have all been really good and some of my favorite b-sides of twice. i also really hope tzuyu and mina write a song at some point because i would like to see what it would sound like. loved the video as always with your videos :)
Honestly? This was such an interesting video to watch. I love the way you analyze every member write style in such a detailed way....the way you describe it is really pleasing to the ear (if that makes sense?) idk....like you mention things that I wouldn’t even notice or hear.....I just think that that so interesting.
The fact that not only did their concept matured but also how they wrote their songs also matured, and it's not forced, you just feel that they literally grown and it's not a forced concept changed just for attention, it's girls growing into women and they reflected that in their songs clearly.
This video is very informative as I am very fond of Twice's songs that are written by the members themselves particulary by Chae and Jihyo as they're the members who I also think are the best lyricist in the group. So basically, Chae writes songs and also factors in how it'll sound while Jihyo focuses more on the lyrics itself and its emotion. If these two write a song together (again) now that they're more experienced, then it deserves to be a title track. I personally like Jihyo's style more bc of the way she describes the feeling or emotion, the build up. Yes, subtext, Jihyo's really good at it indeed. I feel like I'm reading a novel and its kinda similar to how Taylor writes songs.
To be honest just the fact the foreign line (Sana, Momo, Mina and Tzuyu) have even participated or helped in songwriting is amazing enough, I'm sure they have countless of works under their belt, as the rest of Twice but you get the point, but they are still far away from showing them due to language barriers or the similar. I'm not trying to diminish their Korean, but rather bring to light that, if it's hard enough already to write a song in your native language, it must be even harder in a second or third language. I'm really proud of their work and contributions as for now, and is it weird that the prospect of their bsides excite me more than the title tracks itself when a comeback is announced? Twice growth is something so beautiful to witness... Thank you for this video!
ahhh i can’t wait for jihyo’s solo album~ she’s got credits on all but the title. tbh, i think she’s surpassed chae as a writer. dahyun’s been writing the most by a lot though.
TWICE's musicality is so underappreciated and the girls are so talented at writing. I'm so excited to see what more they write with their skills!! Could you please do one of IU??
I admire MERA for bringing up the more useful videos about TWICE cause even tho they are widely popular if you compare other groups Certain youtubers refrain so much for going in depth with TWICE discography & lyricism These girls are arguably one of the most talented writers of 3rd Gen and sadly even JYPE limit their work as they still don't have the luxury to write their own TITLE SONGS YET I hope we get another full album solely written or co written by the members including the main CB TITLE TRACK Love you so much Mera Thanks for shining more light on TWICE'S amazing lyricism
As a taylor swift fan and as someone who pays more attention to the lyricism, I find Jihyo's writing style of describing emotions and building a narrative very similar to Taylor.
very excited to see more of sana's writing. also i give huge props to momo and sana since korean is their second language! and i find it so nice that in each of their writing styles i can find their personalities and traces of their comfortable zone. intresting how both chaeyoung and dahyun are more focused on form and rhythm as they are both rappers and momo writes to the melody of a song, which reminded me of dancing/choreographing. i am more personally inclined towards jihyo nayeon and sana's styles but i find it so interesting how different aspects of lyricism and poetry are comfortable to others. all in all, huge respect for all of twice and i really hope one day we can hear a single written by a member/members.
this is an excellent analysis, and it makes me think about how emotions can be conveyed through vocal delivery in lieu of understanding the lyrics on first listen, particularly for the members who focus on style more than form. you've mentioned up no more in previous videos, but i think it's an excellent example of this - for all the energy in up no more, what really gets me is the sheer desperation in jihyo's voice, especially when she goes up into her falsetto at the end of the bridge. conversely, i'd always thought do what we like was a more vibe-y song until i looked up the lyrics, and i wish i could've understood the korean verses from the get-go instead of feeling an urge to write off the song for its "simpler" english lyrics and the repetitive build/drop structure - it's interesting to consider how style is magnified or diminished by the production too. in general, using style vs. form as an analytical premise seems particularly salient for the genre of kpop - i'd be interested to hear your thoughts on other groups who write their own lyrics, and more broadly i wonder if songs that emphasize form over style tend to perform better internationally, since rhythm and sound are immediately salient while semantics take more time (which is true no matter what language a song is in, imo!). thanks for this - i'm really looking forward to going back through EWO and other songs written by twice while thinking about this video!
i do believe Sana has always been a hidden gem and Eyes Wide Open showed that even more. i'm really happy she got confident enough to write a whole song by herself and i personally think Do what we like has the most beautiful and poetic lyrics in the album, and paired with her lower register that she used a lot on the album, really proves that she has SO MUCH in store to show the world. i can't wait for her to show it
Fun fact: Nayeon wrote "DEPEND ON YOU" with Mina's voice in her mind. It's also about their relationship with each other and ONCEs 💗 Twice are really smart and talented when it comes song-writing/producing their own music that's suited to their personalities but a lot of people overlook that or brush it aside because they're obsessed with their old 'cute concept'.
Jeongyeon style is sort of like those lyricist that like to made a picture for their songs, sort of like sketch I guess? Nayeon have some sort of, distinct style, very well thought words, fitting for the musics too. And she love to experiment with words, that's what I like. Jihyo is the kind of lyricist that Rock bands usually have. Actions and behavior over words.
Your videos are masterpieces as TWICE's discography. I hope people will discover it, listen to it more often. Cause' i've always felt valid, genuinely happy and strong listening to their powerful, sincere and comforting lyrics. They're such talented women. My UG without hesitation.

This is why one can't just judge Twice based on their titles tracks. Yes, those tracks slap, but you only get a good look at the real Twice through their B-sides in my opinion.
This, twice’s title tracks are only the tip of the iceberg, they’re there to entice you into the real meat of their artistry.
This honestly goes for most Kpop groups too. Since the title tracks have to be perfectly polished for the public, have to sell well, and also be enjoyable to the public, the companies are more likely to take that into their own hands. But Bsides are where groups tend to shine the most.
Twice have some of the best b-sides around
Mine too. I used to say that Red Velvet had the best song library in Kpop even though I've been a stan of Twice since Sixteen, however they keep putting out great music and now their library is as good as anyones.
like signal
it is my fav album
Some people forget that Twice has been writing lyrics for years now and it's incredible that not only their music sound evolved but also their writing with it. If I remember correctly I read that Korean fans said that Up No More's lyrics are very very good. If you're not involved in producing music it can be difficult to write lyrics but they made it work so far and if they get the opportunity to co-produce (which I'm sure they will since some members have expressed interest in it) some songs I can imagine their writing will get even better.
Chaeyoung co-composed
a japanese song
@@queenjeongyeon4636 oh ok i understand that better, thanks.
@@joshtor29 Want me to get you some speakers so you can say it out loud for the toxic idiots in the back. Srsly tho, this is why I stan them, I know I'm stanning Twice as they are and not some fake plastic personality made up to please the public.

What's more frustrating is many Kpop stans limiting TWICE impact & success with just Pervy men fetishizing the cute girls and thus they are getting the massive sales
Many people don't understand TWICE have evolved away from that narrative & bubble yet people still put them in that same bubble
Exactly
YES
@@Sivzram I'm sure there are men who fetishize female idols who do cute concepts but it can't be all or even most of them. The concert vids I've seen are just fanboys vibing and getting excited to hear their favorite song by korea's most popular girl group. Haters just wanna discredit Twices success to anything they can think of and it's annoying 🙄
@@Kenelope_kelly Exactly and sadly all the female idols regardless of their concepts get fetishized but only TWICE gets the flame cause they selling so well just to discredit their impact as if whole of SK did not vibe to their songs like CHEER UP & TT

Twice is so misjudged even in the kpop community it's ridiculous. They are a group of such smart and talented girls. If only people would dive a little deeper before giving their opinion on them.
It's great to have someone so well spoken and perceptive like you, talk about them.
Great content as usual. ❤
Edit - I would love it if you would do a video like this about BTS. I love their lyrics so much, it'd be great to hear your thoughts on them.
I would love to watch Mera do a video on BTS' lyrics, so I definitely second this.
OMG YESSSS
I hate it when other fandoms look at twice like they are just superficial and one-dimensional because they rlly aren’t. Twice has a reputation of being more of a traditional girl group, so ppl still have this connotation that their music is shallow and meaningless despite twice progressing
I agree I was gonna comment that
I would love for her to speak about BTS
I am not very familiar or involved with the kpop community, I just listen to some groups i like. What is their reputation?
Chaeyoung’s “Handle It” is criminally underrated. I wonder how y’all sleep at night without listening to this masterpiece at least twice a day.
It’s one of my favorites ❤️
RIGHT
I listen to handle it everyday
Yassss I really love that song❤️
Ahhhh I see what you did there twice
Ohhh So I'm Not The Only one who always listen to "Handle it" before i go to bed 😂😂😂

Chaeyoung writes her OWN experience for us to follow along the journey
Nayeon writes FOR US so we could go and get our own experience
She literally wrote a song about her dead cactus😭😭😭
@@njmsjmdct8535 literally 😭😭
that is such a good way to put it
this is just a comment about dahyun’s lyrics in queen but I absolute adore how the song sounds a bit like a Broadway theatre style track and she constantly makes references to putting on ‘just a show!’ or a performance (but ultimately telling u to ditch the false pretences and embrace your uniqueness and feel confident because you’re a queen!) the laughing sound effect in one of the prechoruses, the mix of almost conversational adlibs (particularly in the bridge) and adlibs that are clearly there for dramatic effect... god queen is just such an amazing song and there’s so much to unpack from it
it's one of my fav bsides from twice
@@liz2668 same here!!
I also like that she uses Mina's angelic voices in choruses.
I really love Rainbow the most in Feel Special album with Feel Special honestly and now I know why!
That's so my type like that's how I easily snap at it so love that I can relate with nayeon
Twice really are artist of the year material.
true
IN grammy interview they said the same
They deffo deserved that AAA Daesang last year
i didnt know that the projector was chaeyoung’s idea 🤯
what projector?
So it sounds like Jihyo writes lyrics without thinking about how it will be sung, where as Chaeyoung writes with a deliberate melody or beat that she is trying to achieve?
This is VERY possible! Usually when you write lyrics with a strong form (i.e. Chaeyoung) where you heavily focus on rhythm and rhymes - she most probably have already a melody in mind and chooses the proper words to fill-in the melody ❤
Jihyo's more like "idea - plot - story - lines - lyrics" kind of writer.
Not really
From debut, their vocals weren't great but every member even the best Jihyo put an effort to improve and they did improve.
@@crunchygowon3681 yes, they improve a lot I wish jype would let them use their natural voice and normal range I can clearly see their hardwork the problem here is instead of giving twice a proper vocal training and rest they give them tons of work. I feel bad for momo her precious voice....

Jihyos writing kinda reminds me of Taylor switfs style or is that just me?
Yeah it's kind of reminiscent to it since both tend to use subtext when writing about some kind of lesson or life struggle, and using a situation when doing so. The difference is that Taylor values sound a bit more, and like mera said jihyo's weakness is balancing between sound and lyrics.
@@entyope ohhhh ya that makes sense 😮
@@entyope maybe a reason for that is that Taylor also works on the production/sound of a songs, while Jihyo mainly focuses on the lyrics
Also she uses indirect messages like taylor for example "i dont wanna be up no more" direct word for insomnia or tiredness instead of saying "im tired imma just lay"
Now listen to folklore and evermore. 😊pls listen to the whole album!!! They’re amazing!!!
People praise other groups so much for their work as producers, composers and lyricists but no one outside of Twice’s fandom ever talks about how the girls are really good lyricists and have had a creative hand in their music for a while now

Watching this again because of TWICE's new B-Sides written by Chaeyoung, Jeongyeon, and Dahyun!!
Chaeyoung and Jihyo are no doubt the aces of Twice, even during sixteen era and now their song writing skills are even the top in the group
True + nayeon too, the 3 holy trinity
nayeon too 🛐
Yep Chaeyoung and Jihyo are the most talented. They should be a duo, Chaeyoung being the main rapper and Jihyo being the main vocalist obviously. And Nayeon. Chaeyoung, Jihyo, and Nayeon are the most talented in Twice.
Well, in terms of being the most well-rounded member in TWICE, both of them are fighting at the top there so it makes sense. lol
true
I think I really like Jihyo's writing style, it reminds me a lot of Taylor Swift. Subtext always really gets me, because it is like diving into a story and you are the protagonist, you feel what the protagonist feels. It's also different for everyone, but also always intense for everyone.
I also really like jihyo's writing style
Momo's two songs are hands down my favorite Twice songs. They're just so... They just HIT right
exactly! i feel so confident when i listen to them
its really interesting to come back to this video 3 years later. back then, chaeyoung and jihyo had the most defined and solid writing styles, and now dahyun and nayeon have been added to their ranks - particularly dahyun who has written songs for i believe almost every single album/ep for twice since eyes wide open. i also think that since the release of zone, jihyo has levelled with chaeyoung in writing - and its cool that both are in the composers club now. also, momo mina and sana have penned songs in their native tongue on their own since this video came out, and all of twice participated in the lyrics to a japanese title track, which is awesomeee!!
I see Mera’s notification, I click, and get blessed by Mera’s style of talking
Also, eyes wide open was one of the best albums of 2020,i will fight everyone on this.
eyes wide open deserves all the success
Yesss Eyes Wide Open Is Such A Masterpiece Album Period💅

I think that the title tracks are just so powerful that people think its their only songs..and 15 of those TTs are hits so...
Also thank you for feeling this way abt my girls😊

Chae and Jihyo would be amazing soloists, and I believe when Twice start to do more personal work, I think both will debut solo
this video just further solidifies how much i love twice’s discography. talk about being full of bops.
twice’s participation is one of the reasons why I stanned twice.
Mera is supplying me all the Twice content the other kpop youtubers failed to and I love her for it
People really don't give TWICE the credit they deserve.
I hope twice sees this and know that they're appreciated.
To be honest when I listen to a song written by Dahyun I imagine her writing the lyrics and saying to herself "wow, it's so cool" and she gets more charged up. I really like the energy in her songs they have that edge of sassyness that makes me enjoy them even more.
“This is going to be a long video, grab a snack.” there is no snack :(
plot twist: you are the snacc ;)

this made me realise that some of my favorite Twice songs were written by Jihyo
I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of the 2 best lyricists in twice. people already know Chaeyoung is an accomplished writer and has a lot of lyrics under her name, but neglect to give Jihyo the same attention. Jihyo's "Up no More" lyrics alone establishes her potential and sophistication with words. I'm honestly blown away every time by leader-nim's many talentS.
This is awesome, especially because I feel like Twice's contribution to their lyricism is often overlook. It's great hearing someone really go in depth with it. I love Jihyo's style so much, that slight of hand of building such a strong impression of what she is writing about without addressing it directly really appeals to me
Chaeyoung is by ult bias, so I really appreciate this video. She's such a creative and artistic person, and I really admire that about her
Mina and Tzuyu are foreigners so they can take their time and also Tzuyu wrote a song too but it was rejected, Chae said it was cute.
Besides the letters Tzuyu writes to fans are really poetic, even when trans in eng
I cant wait a song by her.
OT9 forever
Jeongyeon is back
Dahyun truly blew my mind when i heard Queen for the first time, she's been my ultimate bias since 2017 and i can really feel her personality in the way she wrote the lyrics, it's all so gentle and soft but it has a punch of fun and a great hook that prevents it from being boring. I could easily see her singing it all by herself, it's almost like i can hear her voice through the lines and how she worked on the tones and shapes she gave to the words. She really did an amazing job on Queen
Jihyo songs are definitely my favourite, I love 21:29 and up no more🍭
The fact that Queen and Trick It are my 1st and 2nd favorite b-sides in k-pop...Bring It Back is also a masterpiece too!!
Seriously, nobody else is analyzing K-pop songwriting this way. More of this please!!
TWICE are famous for their personality and title tracks but I hope more people van appreciate their discography and how the girls are involved in it. They are talented artists and not just idols because they take part in making their music.

Sunset and Get Loud are such a masterpiece
@@civilizechhun858 and Girls Like Us? I love that song especially chaeyoung's rap followed by mina's verse towards the end of the song, gives me goosebumps everytime i listen to it. Get loud was my first fav bside along with up no more. Jihyo never disappoints me. All these songs written by members themselves are freaking masterpiece 🤯 I just love it ❤
It’s not a coincidence that my favourite twice bside are always member written songs.
Dahyuns writing is very nice and the rythem is just *chef's kiss*
I really enjoy Jihyo’s song writing. It’s so beautiful and raw. I love her songs!
Hell yeah.
i just realized that some of my favorites bsides were written by jihyo, her writing style is really appealing
I like Nayeon and Jihyo's writing the best, but all of them have great sense of writing and each of their styles are good in their own way. Anyways thank you for this thoughtful and inspiring video, I'm in love with your voclabularity and the way you word things, you motivate me to make my own videos too.
Eyes wide open is such a beautiful album omgosh.
Such a great video. Twice is really evolving with their music not only from a sound perspective but also in their lyricism. I do hope in the future that they’re able to produce their own songs (but then I worry about JYP hearing it for a second then denying it like he did JB). All in all, great video
Well, it makes sense momo's writing complements the music rather than the opposite, she's a dacer after all
I don't know if anyone has already pointed it out but your intro is incredibly well done.

I never gave much attention to twice's lyrics before so i'm so happy you made this, talent = twice 😪
and I know people compliment bts lyricism all the time, but I loved the way you explained and analysed the writing styles in this video, so maybe you could think about doing one about them?? Just a sugestion lol
Yeah I agree! BTS have really cool meanings in their lyrics, and I think she should make a video about it too!

I'm atually amazed on Sana's writing skills (not expecting that much to be honest). but if you think of it, even in giving speeches Sana tends to provide wonderful lines. She has a distinct way of giving a speech like starting it in kinda informal way somehow. And whenever she is asked about her opinion and view about something, she really gives a long and detailed answer
this video needs a 2024 update!!
I love how all the songs chaeyoung and jihyo have written are my favorite twice song
i just finished the video and i agree with basically everything you said. i hope that momo writes more songs in the future because all of the songs that she has co-wrote e.g. love foolish, hot ect have all been really good and some of my favorite b-sides of twice. i also really hope tzuyu and mina write a song at some point because i would like to see what it would sound like. loved the video as always with your videos :)
Tzuyu is already writing lyrics but it is always rejected
I think Jihyo is best lyricist in Twice
Thank you for this video!
ahhh i can’t wait for jihyo’s solo album~ she’s got credits on all but the title. tbh, i think she’s surpassed chae as a writer. dahyun’s been writing the most by a lot though.
as a writer (albeit more so fiction than poetry) and a Once, this video is exactly what I needed for a good start to my day. Thank you.
TWICE's musicality is so underappreciated and the girls are so talented at writing. I'm so excited to see what more they write with their skills!! Could you please do one of IU??
I admire MERA for bringing up the more useful videos about TWICE cause even tho they are widely popular if you compare other groups
Certain youtubers refrain so much for going in depth with TWICE discography & lyricism
These girls are arguably one of the most talented writers of 3rd Gen and sadly even JYPE limit their work as they still don't have the luxury to write their own TITLE SONGS YET
I hope we get another full album solely written or co written by the members including the main CB TITLE TRACK
Love you so much Mera
Thanks for shining more light on TWICE'S amazing lyricism
i love jihyo’s songwriting style
As a taylor swift fan and as someone who pays more attention to the lyricism, I find Jihyo's writing style of describing emotions and building a narrative very similar to Taylor.
up no more + sunset are my favorite twice bsides and I love Jihyo so much for contributing to these songs
i need chaeyoung and jihyo to write together
They did for Eye Eye Eyes off of the SIGNAL EP I think
C-could this be made a series? 🥺 it’s so good and informative, especially as a new ONCE!
I'd love to see an update to this after Ready to be is released. Two years and more songs could've been changed.
very excited to see more of sana's writing. also i give huge props to momo and sana since korean is their second language! and i find it so nice that in each of their writing styles i can find their personalities and traces of their comfortable zone. intresting how both chaeyoung and dahyun are more focused on form and rhythm as they are both rappers and momo writes to the melody of a song, which reminded me of dancing/choreographing. i am more personally inclined towards jihyo nayeon and sana's styles but i find it so interesting how different aspects of lyricism and poetry are comfortable to others. all in all, huge respect for all of twice and i really hope one day we can hear a single written by a member/members.
this is an excellent analysis, and it makes me think about how emotions can be conveyed through vocal delivery in lieu of understanding the lyrics on first listen, particularly for the members who focus on style more than form. you've mentioned up no more in previous videos, but i think it's an excellent example of this - for all the energy in up no more, what really gets me is the sheer desperation in jihyo's voice, especially when she goes up into her falsetto at the end of the bridge. conversely, i'd always thought do what we like was a more vibe-y song until i looked up the lyrics, and i wish i could've understood the korean verses from the get-go instead of feeling an urge to write off the song for its "simpler" english lyrics and the repetitive build/drop structure - it's interesting to consider how style is magnified or diminished by the production too.
in general, using style vs. form as an analytical premise seems particularly salient for the genre of kpop - i'd be interested to hear your thoughts on other groups who write their own lyrics, and more broadly i wonder if songs that emphasize form over style tend to perform better internationally, since rhythm and sound are immediately salient while semantics take more time (which is true no matter what language a song is in, imo!). thanks for this - i'm really looking forward to going back through EWO and other songs written by twice while thinking about this video!
It isn't even two minutes into the video and I ALREADY need to rewind, to understand what she said lmao
i do believe Sana has always been a hidden gem and Eyes Wide Open showed that even more. i'm really happy she got confident enough to write a whole song by herself and i personally think Do what we like has the most beautiful and poetic lyrics in the album, and paired with her lower register that she used a lot on the album, really proves that she has SO MUCH in store to show the world. i can't wait for her to show it
Fun fact: Nayeon wrote "DEPEND ON YOU" with Mina's voice in her mind. It's also about their relationship with each other and ONCEs 💗
Twice are really smart and talented when it comes song-writing/producing their own music that's suited to their personalities but a lot of people overlook that or brush it aside because they're obsessed with their old 'cute concept'.
A technical analysis worthy of a PHD dissertation
Fun fact: Jihyo was actually really mad and then she write all of her anger into the song which is "Get Loud"
Please I thought this video was going to be about the Twice members' handwriting styles-
I- this comment made my day
@@liz2668 Aww I'm happy I could do that for you!
jihyo wrote my 2 favourite twice songs so I guess I know who my favourite lyricist is
Your videos are masterpieces as TWICE's discography.
I hope people will discover it, listen to it more often. Cause' i've always felt valid, genuinely happy and strong listening to their powerful, sincere and comforting lyrics. They're such talented women. My UG without hesitation.
