- God Emperor of Dune is the fourth book in Frank Herbert's Dune Saga. The Novel takes place 3,500 years after the events of the previous Novel in the series, Children of Dune. Leto II of the House Atreides has ruled the empire with an Iron fist since that time. The Sandtrout skin which Leto had first put on in Shulloch has grown and changed him. In the early stages of Leto’s “transformation” which is referred to in the novels as his “metamorphosis” Leto was mostly human, the symbiote skin had given him incredibly amplified strength, immunity to conventional attacks, and prevented him from aging. But Leto always knew what would become of him. The skin which was not his own consisted of many interlocking tiny sand vectors Leto knew that approximately 4,000 years after he had put on the living suit, the completed transformation of the sandtrout into their adult worm phase would destroy him. Leto calls this his “final metamorphosis”

That’s awesome... there’s also a reference in spongebob - Sandy Cheeks crouches down to the ground and touches it, says, “Wooorm sign...” and picks up a tiny sign that says “worm.”
There's another episode where Mindy the antagonist girl and mandy are in a beauty contest. Mindy puts her had in a box and the announcer annouces the test as "gom jabar"! Then Mindy jerks her hand out and yells "ahh it burns!" Then the soundtrack has monkey sounds.
Leto II is the most fascinating character by far in the entire Dune saga. At least half this book takes place within his mind and memories and it is utterly compelling.
I'd say as a book it was coherent with the cover, and one dimensional. Doesn't make it a bad book,. Just I read it at such young age, I was looking for the adventure and it was Leto talking and plotting and talking explaining his perogative, his sensebilities. In saying this, I still think it'd make a great movie, but a dark morross or sublime style movie. I feel these stories by Frank Herbert, are sorta of a barring of Franks soul, and thoughts of what could be, far in the future, being wrestled with in the upper echelons of the mind. Then again 10000 years in the future. it could be very close to a real future reality, very dark time. So yes compelling story and movie, I'd think. It's hard for alot oof things to go on up there, when it's just one dynamic going on. Something leaders I think should tryin avoid doing to their fellow human.
@@jasonbrady3606 Funny, because the part I cared the least about was the adventure. I was 23 or something when I read it, though. The parts of God Emperor that stuck with me the most were Leto's thoughts, his adherence to the Golden Path, his interactions with Duncan Idaho, and Duncan's absolute existential dread realizing he had been cloned countless times before. It's not necessarily the most well-written of the Dune books, but it is the one that is the most thought-provoking to me. It's probably the only book I ever read that argues in favor of a tyrant (outside of The Prince), and it has enough compelling reasons why this would be preferable.
@@TheBestCommenterEVER I was closer to 12yrs old, when I read it. I really should read it again. Every chapter I was like, it's going to start in this chapter... Lol right to the end, because it is well written, and still mighty interesting. Duncan Idaho exactly he was really important in the story but hardly remember what the deal was. It was all that metamopheis ithat Leto was going through as he was transforming, so it was interesting, just missing some of the overarching reason ,which was the golden path, just didn't seem THAT necessary, at the time I was reading it. It could be really cool on the big screen. And at the time I didn't get the time me scales right. it was so much further in the future, I felt like it had gotten off track and I was waiting for it to come back to more relevance with the earlier books. It sorta turned me off from reading anymore of them. Sorta a shame on me, because there's many other books he has written that I didn't read because of that marathon through god emperor.

@@yelloweyeball nobody wants to be a Messiah. As a Christian the message and what we should do is really quite simple, yet it is very complicated in practice in ways. First reject mobs, second know what you're doing, and third forgive those that have tried to follow the first two. Recognize that God is an individual singularity and we to should recognize and respect each other's individuality. As complicated is instituting the social governmental systems to humanly abide to what's required. We recognize that children don't know what they're doing, and will make mistakes. We recognize that new things bring new challenges that we don't know and must forgive when those things are done wrong. And I think founder's of the U.S. thought of alot of those to make things sane in God's eyes. You know things go sideways at times. People or systems design things things in a way that is unnatural or like thinking they control God's mind and I don't think they understand what God is, and what they're dealing, like the entire universe and everything is God's mind. Our entire lifetimes are like a blink of God's eye. Then these Messiah get elevated to a forefront of God's mind as like Jesus bringing the pain of life I'd imagine to God's not subconscious, but conscious mind, and then Jesus god becomes integral in the judgement of the individual. And he may be there with the other righteous prophets chumming around but Jesus is the shield of sanity. Ghandi and his followers didn't want to stand there be beaten by the British soldiers, the monks didn't want sit in the middle of the street and soak themselves in gasoline and light themselves on fire. No they did for culture their people to save lives and heritage. There's always these god complex stories and movies all the time but their dark and full of tragedies. Thought provoking but there's definitely something wrong when humanity needs a Messiah to save them. God will sorta us when we die. We have no control of it's thoughts. If we're fish or reincarnated as human, or some volcanic in thee earth or a rocks. It will put you where you 'work' for it. We don't get to choose. but to be in God's grace to go to heaven Jesus. People act as if they know. .. I've some ideas about how it might go but you know I'll be long gone before and it might reset the whole thing a dozen times before right just to take two steps. Respecting others having some understanding goes a long ways. The mocking childish behaviors na there's places and times for that. They shouldn't desicrate the temple's...
Poor Duncan Idaho, taking the role of Sean Bean of the Dune universe, being constantly ressurected and subsequently killed in almost every book of the series
I love the fact that Duncan became a fan favorite in the first book, died unceremoniously, then ended up being the only character who appeared in every book. He's like Boba Fett×1000
Duncan's a stone cold playa. He f*cked Alia, Hwi, Murbella and the series ended with him being a God of Sex.

In a paralel universe Sean Bean plays Duncan in all films but the rub is that this includes Brian and Kevin adaptations.
There was a part in the book involving the constant Duncan Idaho clones, where Leto grieved each one that died in some way. I couldn’t help thinking about that line in Austin Powers Goldmember. “I don’t know what I’d do if I ever lost you. Oh, I’d probably move on, make another replica... but there’d be a 30 second period where I would be inconsolable.”
You read God-Emperor enough times, you'll eventually find a joke in there somewhere.
@@Yujifanik Exactly, the god emperor was a god in terms of his knowledge of history and previous lives... to him life after life was a fact of his very existance. He saw the funny irony of the gholas.

Thanks. I've read all 6 books repeatedly over the last 25+ years, and each time I manage to make more connections; to get more out of them. Leto threw all of humanity into one big pot, then he turned up the heat, applied the lid, and sat on it 'til it burned his ass! And he did it on purpose! About the Dune saga, Arthur C. Clarke said, "I know of nothing comparable to it, except The Lord of the Rings". I myself have never before or since found another story with such a complex analysis of ecology, economy, religion, government, politics, myth, power, philosophy, psychology, evolution, and the dangerous tendencies of humanity. I've said before, that I think Herbert started off Dune at genius level, and his I.Q. went up 20 points with every book. It spans thousands of years - and more than 20 years of Herbert's life. It is, indeed, "The most magnificent achievement in science fiction"! tavi.
You’ve converted into words an emotion that I was feeling time to time .. this confirms it for me. I feel so many of my scattered questions about life are tied together and shown to me as lessons .. the good and bad possible timelines. This 6 book series is incredible.

Well it seems like the main message which I’m guessing is “you are the master of your own fate, you are the chooser of your paths” etc is just crazy highlighted by this vid, it really hits a lot of the marks that Leto is trying to get people to conjure up their own feelings and emotions rather than relying on the whole of humanity to draw it out of them
Interdisciplinary studies and making interconnectons and finding your own visualizations of comprehension is the key to that genius.
“The most magnificent achievement in science fiction” is apparently a world-building that consists of - drugs made of a mixture of giant worm feces and water - fish people doing them to guide spaceships - a man transforming himself into a worm God to rule for millenniums - a sword master’s corpse being repeatedly resurrected for 4500 years - and space witches that beset the galaxy by stagnating progress

You can tell youre dealing with the good guys when they find out the cold, immortal, monster of a villain can love, and say "yes! We can use this!" Sometimes you need to ask if youre the baddie.
I don't think that the Siona crew could be the bad guys, mainly because I think that what happened was ultimately what Leto wanted.
He made a big deal about wanting to be *surprised*. Didn't he breed Siona specifically so that she would be outside of his prescience? Additionally, from the beginning of God Emperor he seemed to know that his transformation back to Sand Trout would happen relatively soon, and that his Golden Path was nearing an end.
If I remember correctly, the Tleilaxu created Hwi so that Leto would fall in love with her and so that they would have leverage against him. The fact that they even fell in love was something they both hated, because they both knew that they were being played by the Bene Tleilax. If the Golden Path was to avert humanity's destruction by the thinking machines that the Bene Tleilax were going to create, then if Leto had stayed alive after falling in love with Hwi, then he probably would have fallen off the Golden Path
This is one of the subjects of Dune overall. Good and bad are very subjective. What Leto did was horrible, but without him humanity would have disappeared. The plot to destroy him was terrible in it's own way, even though it was done with noble motives and was in the end exactly what needed to happen.

Leto II was the C section humanity needed to be born. Sometimes you can only choose between levels of suck.
He wanted to die, he did encourage rebellions to find the right one to succed. Thats why he even bred her. That he finds the ones finding the strengh to overthrow his rule , before he neither becomes too inhuman nor dependent on his wife. Thats why he secretly provoces everyone he deems worthy to rebel. He knows he is the villain, plays the villain and is internal torn into various path, one side of him knowing he is the villain an he mit be defeated before he become too muh in love or inhuman.
Siana is not the villain, she does what she has to do, supported even by leto in a way.

I always wonder why Malky is such an underrated character. He´s just as fascinating as Moneo (or even more) and the scene where Leto kills him is magnificent.

This was fucking awesome. Well done dude. I absolutely love the part where you explain what it was Hwi DID for Leto, reawakening the HUMAN in him. That aspect has always been dear to me in an intensely personal way as it parallels how my Lady and I found each other; the fact that you used the drawing I did years ago (which it literally IS her and I in the rolls of Leto and Hwi) while you are explaining that just kind of blew my mind a little.
Any chance you can give a timestamp? I'm curious to see what you drew.

Hwi is a saving grace for Leto II. She was neccesary to show the human side of him at the end. And it would have been messed up and heartless if Leto II died all alone without anybody emphatically understanding his sacrifice for so many years.

God Emperor is probably my favourite dune book, it's the one that hooked me for the rest of the series and now i'm all the way into the extended prequels. Sigh so much to read so little time.
the brian herbert books are pretty sloppy sci-fi cliche stews that retroactively diminish some of the greatness of the original series. he turns the Butlerian Jihad into some terminator-esque schlock and it's all very bad. check out the dune encyclopedia if you're hungry for me. brian herbert's work misses the point and he doesn't seem to understand what made his father's books so good and so lasting. cheers

Yes the Kevin/Brian books are no works of brilliance vs Frank's and a also agree that they are not what Frank would have written. I would say they got it different not necessarily wrong.
Enjoyable enough books to read just nowhere near the amazing breadth and depth of the original author.

for me dune books I gotta be written by Frank Herbert got all 6 books and the book eye by Frank Herbert which has a story called road to dune just an dune in universe map of dune during pails reign the only exception is the dune encyclopaedia which wasn't written by Frank Herbert but he gave it his blessing in life something didn't happens with his son Brian Herbert anyways the dune encyclopaedia which I consider it great part of the dune universe. I don't read the Brian Herbert stuff I just won't.

I just finished reading this book the other day and I cant help but replay the entire plot in my head. Leto II's 3500 long sacrifice for humanity can be compared to the original Leto's sacrifice where he had to lie to everyone and let people believe that Jessica is a traitor, in order to save her. Its the ultimate sacrifice.

These videos are amazing, and the artwork too. To think that a few hundred years ago, this art could've covered ceilings in cathedrals, and today we're 7 billion, and painters like these walk among us unknown, is sad and beautiful at the same time.

Aside from the original, this book is my favorite in the series, no contest. Leto II might be the greatest character in all of science fiction.
I wish Malky had been around longer, his irreverence with which he spoke with Moneo and the "Old Worm" was great.

No matter how many times I enjoy these Dune guide videos I'm still blown away by how well they were edited. You must've been an OCD wreck getting them done Quinn, Frank would've been honored
When I first read the series, in my late teens, I finished the first 3 ("Dune" thru "Children of Dune") and was like, wow! Awesome series. Then, when I started into "God Emperor," it "got weird." The content of this book was so metaphysical/ philosophical--the endless musings and broodings of a bored, near-omniscient god-being with a plot narrative weaved like a thin ribbon around the self-absorption of Leto's ponderings. It was a challenge--a kind of metaphysical Moby Dick. But it did make me appreciate Frank Herbert as a thinker. He was a man of great depth, who really gave serious consideration to the human condition. I would have loved to have a conversation with the guy.

I find myself allways held in awe at the scope of Frank Herberts Dune , and with the passing years of life - I see and derive greater depth ...... Herbert was a remarkable thinker , and brings to bear a staggering, in it's vast scope , gestalt of elements re technology, psychology , religion, spirituality , .... his Dune is a poetic epic message to us all .... the world of Arakis feels super real ..... a window into vast time dimensionality 😌

Just finished this book. I'm blown away. I started reading the whole series for the first time since I came across this channel. Thank you Quinn. 2 more to go. God Emperor of Dune is awesome. It's quite the change from the previous 3 books. I don't know why a lot of Dune fans dislike it. Every book just gets better and better, IMHO.
My favorite in the series is the next one, Heretics of Dune. If you liked this one you'll definitely like the next two.
Because people love the setting, characters and feel of the original trilogy. then this fucking thing comes out set 3500 years after all the shit we're invested in with a fucking worm man as emperor of the universe. it just seemed to ooze pretentiousness like herbert thought he was writing the most profound thing eve rmade when really it was just shit. Ive always hated Leto II, give me back paul any day

@@supremeworld87 God Emperor was a welcome suprise to me... After multiple re-readings of the series it became my favourite of Frank Herbert's writing. You get to finally understand what Paul and Ghanima found so horrific about the Golden Path, however necessary it obviously was.

This is the hardest episode to look away. God, Leto, why do I love thee so.
The quote at the beginning reminds me of how Tolkien wrote men into his world as being separate from it and able to choose their own paths, where the drawves, elves and even Hobbits were connected and bound to the land and all its changes. From that freedom come both hellish horrors and holy paradises, and we have only ourselves to blame for whatever place we end up.
I'll have you know this was fascinating background sounds to have while cleaning the entirety of my room.

I know what I'm watching this Friday night! I feel so lucky - i just found this channel two nights ago, have watched all dune stuff, and already a new 90+ minute video is up. You rock!
God Emperor is by and far my favourite Dune book. it was actually the very first Dune book I took out of the Library - of course, none of it made much sense as I had none of the History behind it - didn't realise it at the time, but when I read it again after reading the first 3 - it all clicked into place and I loved it.

You have "the voice"; soothing, but with good dramatic intonation, and the soundtrack matches it perfectly. Your narration is way better than what I've heard in many audiobooks. I like listening to these videos until I fall asleep, then the next day I just pick up from where my brain could still make sense of the story.
I really love these. Can't wait for Chapter House. This is the bond of water. A man's flesh is his own,his water belongs to the tribe.
Just watched it and all I want to say is thank you! I had forgotten how good this book was, how far ahead of it's time it was and still is in many ways. Thank you for the great narrative and the effort that was put into this.
Ahead of it's time or nothing new under the sun and mostly recycled mysticism, religion, and philosophy. Absolutely amazing either way you cut it.
I can only congratulate you on delivering this video that is like the finest delicacy that exists for a Dune fan who read the books quite some time ago.
Now I have to reread it all. I will try it through audio books since your voice and narration proves how powerful this story can be with the right person telling it.
Can't wait for the last two books, which are actually my favourite of the cycle.

This was the only sci fi novel that seemed to tap into something truly terrifying.
@@cjhepburn7406 The Tyrant doesn't have contempt for his subjects, more a frustration at mankind's blindness over the eons, the blindness that resulted in him having to forego a part of his humanity, out of love. He is the subjects and the Tyrant; he is no more than a lesson, humanity's Gom Jabbar.
I'll watch this in sections cause it's been almost a decade since I read the book. Thank you again for your time and efforts. Many, even if they do not post or say it, appreciate it I'm sure.

Just finished God Emperor. It was amazing. I found it horrific on what it's like to change into a worm, and the religious hysteria surrounding his religion. I loved it. I'm enjoying listening to these videos as I read through the series. So far I like every book better than the previous one.

It was very difficult for me to process and understand or interpret what I had read. I've overcome much of my LD, but it still afflicts me to this day. I love this ultimate guides, they always tell me something I missed during reading. (well these are so complex novels, probably will be worth reading them again a few years later).
About an hour in, never thought I would like Dune this much since watching the new movie and hearing about the books from my dad growing up. Now as a brakeman for a train, I have lots of downtime. Usually picking up trash on the tracks while I wait for the next train. This series has taken me to another dimension. The narration, fully realizes the genius of Dune.
Probably the deepest book Frank Herbert ever written. And you did a great video on it. Respect and cheers!
This was the hardest book to get through, and is definitely the densest book in the series, and was hard to follow a lot of the concepts discussed in the book, and the plot, so this helped

I think the quote can easily be leveled at people who espouse vertue but infact are only after power most of the middle class intelligentsia of the past used working class people and peasants as a ladder to power, I see no difference in those who signal their vertue and stir up the masses they're either trying to be left alone or they want power. I wander how easy it was to decry the acts of the nazi part during the early 30s would the people defending them be silenced by the media and fired from their jobs and such Its obvious this is not true so just look at those who have cultural power and how easy it is to go agist the grain and maybe you'll see who the true oppressors are.

I disagree with you on some minor points of the videos but I am in awe of how well you analyze and explain the many levels and themes of these books. I can hardly wait to experience your examination of Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune as I am sure that you will do an excellent analysis of them also! This is an absolutely phenomenal synopsis, my man.
Amazing content. I have just finished Hunters of Dune. I listened to this book second on audio tape, and I missed out on so much. One of the most amazing part of this series is how the understanding of what is going on develops slowly, but once the whole story line is known, which takes place over tens of thousands of years, it changes the understanding of the entire thing. It wasn't until the end of Hunters of Dune that I understood what the Golden Path was.
I must say i am enjoying this interpretation and re-imagining of books 4 and 5 of the Dune series MUCH more than i enjoyed the original!!! I ADORE the narrative voice, for one thing: it's like someone from the mists of the past were reading a great mystery, adding to and fleshing it out as he unfolds the Ancient Wisdom to us. THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!
I'm checking out these dune guides i havent read the books all i can tell so far is that this is soo much more than science fiction book this is a Masterpiece i can't wait to read them all
