  • If you are a geologist and you have spent any significant time in the field, you have probably lost a geopick or two. Here is how I learned Not to do that!
This video, with all the others in my series of Fieldcraft for Geologists, is available at:

Not a geologist, but a retired surveyor. Over the years I've scattered hammers all over the midcontinent US working ahead of seismic crews. This was fun to watch.

Simple and effective. That's such a great idea. Thanks for the tip.
I have recently binged on your videos. That's a great content.
    Cheers!!!

i don’t geopick yet, but as a roof plumber i use a lanyard on my drill so when i drop it it does not hit the ground. also i never leave it somewhere i shouldn’t as it’s always tied to my hip… might help you lot in the field also 🤷🏽‍♂️

You can see a red lanyard to my right pocket. That's tied to my compass for the same reason!

Good idea with the hand muscle memory. I use a similar technique plus a strip of pink flagging tape wrapped around the handle as backup, just in case somebody else borrows MY hammer!

Hey Nick...can never recall loosing a hammer...or the Trimble. I tend to hook hammer over shoulder when stationery. I have however lost interesting rocks....

Yep. Habit forming behavior is the key. There are still plenty of people losing geopicks out there, because I keep finding them!

@Nick Tate one time dropped a hammer but picked up another miner's pick which distracted me from the hammer!

Thats what I did actually... I gave my special geo hammer a nice engrave of initials, Gmail, and a cool fossil design on the handle too. gives it a cool and unique custom look :)

@@dommie6darko89 Nice, what fossil was the design, I would put edrioasteroids on my one.

@@glenwarrengeology I put mine with a simplistic symbol of an Ammonite on it. Gives it a aquatic feel to it..

i wont bore you with the detailsrationale etc but i have found that wheni put anything down by using subjective speech" ihaveput the fbudfa there" it becomes a stronger mental engram and i tend not to misplace things
