It's the second ingredient in an impossible burger. It's simply soybean protein and carbs without the oil. And even if you did assume this faulty premise as true, you could still just grow the soy, not process it for oil, and then consume it as a whole bean product directly instead. It could be true that something about the way it's often processed makes it unideal for human consumption (I honestly don't know, but it would make sense, in trying to make it as efficient as possible, less concern about cleanliness etc), but soybean meal, in and of itself, as co-product in the creation of soybean oil, isn't inedible to humans (save for that 8% that is the hulls). The whole soy debate is so irrelevant considering that most of what a cow eats isn't soy anyway. Yes, most of the soy is grown for animal consumption along with oil, but at least half of what a cow eats is grass and other things we legitimately can't eat.

I really hope you still read these comments Ed!
I think it would be important to note that a lot of these statistics are muddled up from place to place. Boy would I love to outright state that 85% of soy is used for animal feed since this would put meat eaters at bay for this argument, but it just isn't that simple...
Take the UK for example. Richard Young, Policy Director for the SFT states that in 2015/16, we imported 3.1 million tonnes of soybeans of which 35% was used for animal feed. 45% of it was used for human food products leaving 18% for non food products and the rest as misc.
One may still argue that this is a substantial figure but on the other hand, the UK clearly doesn't used as much soy in animal feed as somewhere like the US.
From a world perspective, FAO has a great platform for agricultural statistics (FAOstat) that Gunnar Rundgren analysed and found that we globally produce 270 million tonnes of soybeans (from my own findings up to 350 million in 2017) of which approx 77% is used for animal feed.
It would be interesting to see what you think of this Ed! I for one think it doesn't at all reduce the argument from the vegan side as globally, the over farming of soy is clearly due to the demand from the animal farming industry but nonetheless, I think it's important to know the ins and outs of the statistics that world organisations quote!

of course the products of trafficked, enslaved bees are NOT vegan & that's the reality of almost all pollination in the world today! 200 billion bees in the US alone are currently enslaved & part of the bee trafficking industry, having their hives emptied of food every few weeks so the hives can be made to work harder & easily lifted onto trucks for transport to the next "vegan" crop. 100 billion bees a year are tortured to death through this process!
Bees making speciality honeys like manuka, that do NOT get trafficked around their country, see losses of only 10-20% of their hive per year, v the 50% for the bees pollinating your "vegan" crops. Pretty dam obvious which one is the most enslaved, deadly & cruel isn't it! Bees are geo-sensitive! trafficking them from one mono-crop to the next every few weeks is as cruel as you can get!

The same argument goes for meat and dairy production by the way: it's not sustainable for all humans on this planet. It has not even been sustainable for the last decades, we just did not want to notice. And we don't have to feed all humans with soya if this really were to become a problem, we could shift to something else. If that was not possible either, we'd be at the end of the road anyway, as feeding farm animals requires a lot more plant protein than directly consuming the plants ourselves. I doubt that it will become a problem though, because it is estimated that 75% of the land used in agriculture would be freed if we stopped animal farming. (Late reply, but still. ;)

    Thanks for the insightful video!
Just to be clear, I am currently pescatarian (slowly turning into vegetarian).
I am also deeply concerned about whats happening to the environment now and have one question for you.
You address the problem of soya, using a lot of arable land, destroying habitats and ecosystems. A product which is mostly farmed for animal food. I get it. But when all of us, humans, switch to veganism, we will have to replace all the calories that we received from meat or dairy, from plants, right? But is it anywhere, calculable, available to know, how much plant-based food would be needed to feed our entire population if everyone were to become vegan? How much land would have to be exploited in order to feed us?
Make note, that our population is still rapidly growing, even now not all of sapiens are fed well, and also whatever agriculture business is done on arable land (animal or plant) - it becomes less fertile over time until it fully degrades. According to WWF we have lost 50% of our topsoil, which allows us to grow anything in the past 150 years. It doesn't apply only to animals - even now some plant based products (apart from soy), are very aggressive - avocado or palm oil industries are causing massive commotions in the environment - erasing large areas for the industries to thrive.
So how can we assure out future generations that land won't be more over-exploited than it is now? Soil doesn't care if it's an animal or a plant, if used for mass production, for instant profit - it will get degraded really fast. UN-studies have shown that approx. 24 billion tonnes of soil is being degraded because of intensive farming. Obviously, economic or any other 'growth' won't stop unless the system changes. And both the government and businesses perpetuate that growth cycle. Until now I haven't come up with any solution on how to stop that growth mania. So knowing growth will require more and more from the resources to feed a constantly multiplying race of us - and knowing that this can lead to a very dangerous soil degradation that won't allow us to have ANY food (since animals run on plants too) - what can we do?
In the end, as far as I argue in the sustainability matter - it doesn't matter if the race will be fully or quarterly vegan, in the end, if current system keeps on thriving, environmental sustainability won't be reached. At least, that's my take on it now.
    What do you think?
Just to underline again - I am not against veganism. I have a goal to become one myself too. I just take gradual steps, since diet changing makes my stomach goes ridonculous and it is not a pleasurable experience. But I am also deeply concerned about the environment, and how change is good. But a long-term thought-out plan is even better. I don't want my grandchildren to be stuck in another 'climate' situation like we are right now (just instead of global warming, it would be how to make soil fertile again without starving?).
If you have any thoughts on this, I would love to hear you out!

Please can you do a video about how you can have a sustainable vegan lifestyle in the UK?? I’m not sure you can have a balanced vegan diet if you were only to rely on local organic produce (which is arguably the only #crueltyfree option)! I’ve been vegan for 5 years. I buy my walnuts in plastic bags that come from China. I buy b12 capsules in plastic bottles. I can’t afford organic so I eat frozen, plastic wrapped veg. I sometimes buy almond milk, probably from California. Bee’s are used to pollinate my avocados and almonds (the decline of which can be attributed to harmful pesticide use), pesticides cover the veg crops I buy from, influencing cancer rates in farmers hundreds and thousands of miles away from me. Instead of leather I wear plastic. Instead of wool I wear polyester. All of this goes into landfill and water systems. I am actively harming all living beings as a result of my consumption AS A VEGAN! 😭I know it might seem OTT but isn’t that what vegans are accused of being? “Too extreme”? If it’s about compassion, sustainability and health, I’m having serious doubts about how veganism can viably contribute. Am leaning more towards local, organic, very minimal AP consumption that is grass-fed, for example. Help!!! 😅😅 am having a vegan identity crisis and need your input please!!

As usual the key is better farming, not to stop farming. The technology and methodology to grow enough food for a rich diet of both meat and plants can be developed so that we can maintain a healthy and delicious diet of BOTH food types. It is not necessary to stop animal or plant farming. We only need better methods. It also turns out that climate change can help, with this by making more land at the hemispheric frontiers arable. For example, new techniques are being developed to grow food in permafrost regions. Previously unthinkable. This could allow for a quantum leap in food output. We don’t need and should not want veganism. The key is technology and innovation for profit. That is how you expand the food supply. Not by limiting the human diet to unnatural plant-only formulations.

Astro so I looked into this before. I think backster himself said something about the plants wanting to be a part of us. I'm not sure how he got to that conclusion.
On a side note, I'm attending a master's program on herbalism. There is something called xenohormesis. This is when a plant creates a metabolite to protect itself from it's environment and you consume it causing you to benefit from it. Those metabolites can be smell, toxic phytochemicals, thicker skin, etc... This in a way makes me think there is an obvious level of intelligence coming from the plant, to even produce the chemical and know that it's working. At the same time I think that just like they make adjustments to repel, they also make adjustments to attract. Like color, taste, smell, etc... So if a plant also has this intelligence, it knowingly is calling to be eaten. Just my theory.

I know its easy to get defensive, but this is misleading. 85% of soy grown in the world is crushed for soybean oil. 98% of that leftover soy product is then given to livestock. Soybean oil makes much more money than soy does as feed, but it allows farmers to sell the byproduct and make money off of the whole crop, even though animals really should just be grass fed anyways. 6% is used in direct human consumption. The rest is used for fuel.

Pretty twisted logic there. Only a small amount of a soy plant is edible for human consumption, funny enough about 70% of a soy plant is a by-product. And only a small percentage of the beans is for animal consumption. In truth if we didn't have animals eating the byproduct, not only would it make no difference to the amazon, but we'd also have a massive amount of food waste.
In conclusion, 70% of soy production is a byproduct and is fed to animals.

Hey Ed. I dont know if youll read this but I hope u could. I went vegan last summer (2017) and its obviously the best thing one can do. Now my problem is that I dont like anyone that isnt vegan anymore. I see them as monsters, people that enjoy raping and murdering, because thats what they do. They use products of rape on their cakes that they celebrate their kids birthday, and they all laugh and enjoy, like monsters. Do you know how to deal with this? Is there even a way? I would like to be able to be friends with non vegans but I cant because all I see is what they are doing to the world and all animals except the human specie. :(

I deal with this too (albeit in a much less intense way) and I think it definitely gets easier the longer you’ve been vegan, give yourself another few months and you’ll probably grow accustomed to being calm around non veggies. I still often find myself looking at people I really respect though - my doctors and teachers etc- and think, ‘they’re so smart, how are they not vegan?’ and I console myself by thinking, ‘it’s just a matter of time. They’ll realise what they’re doing wrong some day.’
