Excellent interview Pablo, learnt so much from this. Love the way you discussed with him it’s not necessarily about transcribing but what are you going to do with the information, e.g. dissecting it, re-arranging the information learnt, putting your own stamp on it! I like the points about using the 3x Pedals and wouldn’t have expected Bud Powell to use Pedal on some of his faster tunes! Great stuff, have taken some invaluable notes & lessons from this interview! Also like the lesson he learnt from Jason Moran, about taking the tune ‘The Entertainer’ and re-arranging it within 15x mins (putting a time on the goal) and then him critiquing it. Excellent nuggets of information here and there! Look forward to more of your interviews!
Wonderful! Thanks both of you! Tracks like »Come Sunday« belongs to the most touching music I heard ever. »Cute«, a tune, that I thought was pretty dump due to early (Music-) School Big Band versions played poorly, shines, like I never thought it was possible, and became a song I love to listen to. Anyway, »Solo Games« is some of my favorite, most moving records I heard in years. Again, THANK YOU!!
About 34:00 made me think about how listening to Billie is sort of like listening to Miles for the melody. There's a meaning to it that is profound, despite the fact that they tend to deliver the melody in a more gestural way than more "precise" interpreters like Frank or Peggy Lee. Great conversation to hear, Sullivan is one of the best.
His approach on comping is absolutely interessting 🙌 amazing interview ❤ and absolutely on board with practicing only what i want to. . When it feels to much kind of a dayjob then what's the point 😂 but i'm a hobby musician, so i don't have an Auftrag hier 😂
It's so much fun to listen to this! Sullivan has a great sense of humor. Thank you man!
Thx Mehmet. Yes we laughed a lot... very funny guy.
