I think they just didn’t have enough stormtrooper guns for all the extras, so they just gave them whatever guns they had in props, including the stunt versions of Han’s gun. They probably said something like, “It’ll be fine. I mean it’s not like somebody’s gonna come along in like 39 years and slow the footage down in order to analyze what gun every dang stormtrooper had. Could you imagine? Ha ha ha!”
Thanks for doing this! A few years ago I went through this battle shot by shot and found a lot of weird things going on. Han's gun being next to itself on the ground was one of the weirder I think. Maybe it was so when they were doing multiple takes he could just pick one up quickly without missing a beat since there were a lot of stunts going on and people to coordinate. All of the repeated actions makes me think they had 4-5 cameras filming simultaneously and recycled as much footage from each camera as possible so the few stunts the actors learned could be maximized as much as possible, making the scene feel busier and longer. Until breaking it down you don't even notice so I guess it worked. Something else I noticed was that all of the rebel commandos are different guys when they go from the interior to exterior scenes, and the number of commandos and actors changes from shot to shot. Some of the guys you see coming off the shuttle and later you never see them again.
This scene here at 8:20 is when Princes lair kicked the stormtrooper, but it also happens in a different angle at 11:10. I don't know I just find it interesting when they used the same scene but just used it in a different angle.
I enjoyed your breakdown of this battle. I have to say though. The rebel pilot who goes to hug Chewbacca at the celebration is Wedge Antilles, played by Ewan MacGregor's uncle, Dennis Lawson.
14:29 If you want to see Ewoks fire blasters, I recommend one of my childhood favorites. The TV movie spinoff "Ewok Adventure Part 2: The Battle for Endor" has plenty of Ewoks firing blasters, as well as using assorted weapons similar to those used in ROTJ.
I remember reading about that beard guy years and years ago (probably before he was named Rex), and how we see him disguise as a scout trooper, guard the bunker entrance, and later get held captive still in his armour sans helmet. I think it was on a deleted scenes page, like they were wondering if there was more footage of this guy that had been shot where we got a clearer view of what he was doing.
I love that Rex being on Endor was made canon, because its so fitting. Rex fought alongside Anakin, and now he's fighting alongside Leia Organa who is actually a Skywalker. I hope we get to see that battle revisited in Ashoka as a flashback, assuming Rex will be added to the live-action series starring Rosario Dawson. Considering Rex has only ever been in franchises that had Ashoka as a titular character, it would be odd to see Rex never appear in the Ashoka tv series. Even if its just a recurring role, like Gina Carano's character, I'd be fine with that. Anyway, such a flashback would recast the old man with Tumera Morrison as Captain Rex, and we can have the battle focused on that character. He could even show up at Vader's grave to honor Anakin Skywalker who Vader had become one last time. Maybe Vader's grave could be the opening scene for Ashoka, as it'd make sense for that to be where Rex and the ex-jedi reunited. Sorry for the rambling. I just have a lot to say. Now, concerning the Ewok trying to use the storm trooper battle... would be hilarious. It'd be something akin to the scene in the 5th Element where the blaster would blow up and the ewok would be sent flying, and logic would dictate the ewok would eventually learn how to use it properly without exploding the weapon. of course, the ewok would still have terrible aim and the blasts would hit every random thing.
In Legends I believe they had an entire story for the character as well. Some old dude that decided he wanted to fight for freedom and your never too old to fight. I think that was way better then Rex being there. Rex was still a soldier and I'd go so far as to say practically a super soldier. Some old dude that decided your never too old or weak to help is way more powerful.
"I cannot see anything in this helmet" The helmet prop did not have proper eye holes so visibility was poor. so that line from Mark Hammel was expertly adlibbed XD
Michel always says that the bearded old rebel is Rax, but in fact he doesn't have confidence, they asked Dave Filone himself, who is just one of the great heads of STAR WARS and also George Lucas' apprentice, says he doesn't care if he is Rex or not , he just wants to be faithful to his master , that is not Rex , but he says you can think what you want . You who are reading can say that in Rebels it was said that he fought in the battle, and yes it was said, but it was not said if it was a pilot or infantry. But if Dave Filone said you can find whatever you want then it's not wrong.
Well, Rex-Nik is an interesting take, becouse the guy in return of the jedi in canon is only identified as Nik in Star Wars: Force Collection, a digital card game in 2013, and yes Dave refused the idea that Nik and Rex are the same person, but later in Galaxy of adventures it is clear that Rex is Nik Sant, there is an exact scene from the movie, showing Rex instead of Nik, so if it was the case that both Rex and Nik was there, than they should have included both Nik and Rex in the episode, but instead they just retconned Nik. And there is a fact that galaxy of adventures is not canon, but it is made, approved by disney and it is clear that they intention is that Nik is Rex in canon. But now in 2021 a book called I am a clone trooper confirmed that Rex was there at the bunker with Han, so just by pure logic, if there was only 1 old bearded guy near the bunker in the movie, it must be Rex, so the "Rex was there, just elswhere" theory fails. And that stuff in that mobile card game is so easily retconnable, like Ahsokas lightsaber colour in the siege of mandalore. In the book it was green, but they retconned it to be blue. We just need more proof that it was Rex. So in summary it is either Rex or Nik in canon. By the way he is still Nik Sant in legends. For me he is Rex in canon and I really hope they will 100% confirm it in the future.
Actually that’s still Nik Sant, they haven’t canonically changed it as of yet. Dave Filoni even went on to say that he heavily considered it but in the end he decided to respect the canon and keep the character as Nik Sant rather than retcon him just because he wants to.
I heard he ended up wanting to just leave it ambiguous whether Nik Sant was Rex. "Star wars: Rebels" still mentioned (at the end) that Rex & Hera were _there_ ,just not where.
@@tam2237 Well, "canonically" from a certain point of view. The new canon, apart from a few obscure places, seems to be accepting Rex as the bearded man.
Many parts of the original trilogy were shot with painted glass as a backdrop for the actors, hence probably the strange reflection behind Han, in the original resolution it might not even have been visible
I believe Dave Filoni made Rex being there canon already. It wasn't originally part of the plan, but fans were asking, and he was basically "Sure, why not?", since it didn't break the established canon (aside from his accelerated aging). SW Rebels practically confirmed it.
@@Brandon-vo3cb well, since it was canonised in that card game that it was Nik Sant, it kinda broke canon, but I mean does it matter? Canon is already messed up and has many retons like ths kanan comics, bad batch, so a little retcon like this isn't hurt.
@@TenToAceStudios Well, galaxy of adventures tend to be non canon, but that book I am a clone trooper definetely owerwrites an old card game no one knows about.
"those arent doing anything" well they wound up the big rope with the big "x" cross handles, ... you know you've got to wind up a big strectchy cable around the main beam for a while before pulling the little string to set off the catapult, right?
So, admittedly, the old man may not actually be Rex despite the fact that Dave Filoni originally wanted to make that Rex due to him not wanting to upset the fans of the original canon character Nik Sant. With that said, it seems open ended enough where he can be considered either.
I feel like Rex did survive Sabine said Rex fought the battle of endor not that he died in it plus Rex was often talked about possibly being in Ahsokas dabeut in the Mandalorian S2 and the Ahsoka series Bit of an interesting fact we know Poe Damerons parents were also part of the battle of endor I believe his father was part of the rebel strike team on the ground whilst his mother was a Starfighter pilot

@@zachhaynes5052 They attempted to eat them, but Leia stopped them by trading the imps for those nutrition bars that Luke had in ESB (although the New Republic itself didn't care and didn't want to do the deal)
I have a new appreciation for that battle now. There's all sort's going on. When slowed down, some of it doesn't happen the way in which I thought? Some people say it's a weak battle compared to Hoth, or ask why didn't they do this or that? But it's epic in scale + in technical achievement. Especially considering for the time it was made! All the extras, matte painting's, bluescreen, models, costuming difficultie's + explosive special effects! It must have been one tough shoot? Despite the fact that they were in the US! It may have helped to include the deleted scene of the Rebels' blasting their way through the bunker? To give the Rebel troops more of a foreground presence? But the scale is still hinted at. The back door to the base is mile's away from the front entrance by the landing platform! Some people think they just walk in, go down a few step's + then Burtt's your uncle! It's him who say's freeze + then get's bowled over by Han too. Some of the Rebel soldier's have aerial's + all sort's poking out of their tactical backpacks, which I presume are weapons' signal + life sign disruptor's + stuff? The trap's were built for prey, or the Gorax + Endor's dangerous lifeform's. Which was a possible explanation used at the time I think too? But it's clear that they're leading the stormtrooper's in to their trap's! Everyone remember's the lightsaber match or space war, but it's a pretty good battle! It's good how Chewie + Lando in space, save the day, rather than R2 for a change too!
The Rebels love their war crimes. Ya know Han and all the rest of the Alliance were gonna let the Ewoks eat the Imperials, not only soldiers and stormtroopers either, workers, engineers, crew, etc. If it weren't for Leia, pulling a lot of strings, and getting Han to say his ship was worse than the Ghost (Hera's ship), then we would add a couple million people to the already massive Imperial death count.
What about the space battle over Scarif? It's fun watching the Ghost defend the main rebel capital ship... And if you're doing space battles I should also probably vote for the whole 2nd Deathstar fight, probably the best one ever.
So for a bit of Rex: Filoni didn’t want Rex and Nik to be the same person since Nik was a written Legends character. Furthermore, Galaxy of Heroes was written to not be taken as Canon whatsoever. However….Filoni did state that he does believe that Nik Sant is Rex cuz why would an old guy be there? If you noticed at 12:06 right hand near the middle, there is a dead scout trooper. People are saying that the dead scout is Nik Sant or Capn Rex. So if that’s true, (hope it aint) then Rex is dead at 12:06. At the last ep of Rebels, Sabine did say that Rex fought in the Battle of Endor, but she didn’t confirm if Nik is Rex. Basically, Rex could’ve fought in a command ship or a fighter. He was known to serve as a naval officer and as a fighter pilot in Rebels/Clone Wars.
another thing i want to say: 11:24 Han's blaster, the DL-44 is a really common blaster, so wouldn't be uncommon for stormtroopers or officers to be using it
Thank you so much for doing these videos. They bring another level of excitement to Star Wars. I know exactly what you mean at 13: 40 about the trees splintering. I have that image etched in my memory forever. If you want to see an Ewok shooting a blaster check out the movie Battle for Endor.
13:32 no I the 4 on the side was to crank the catapult back into firing position, the one in the back is for grabbing the rocks and loading it on and the one with the string is to fire it
Something I noticed is that it looks like rex had his blaster pointed slightly away from Han as he ran round the corner so if he was to pull the trigger the bolt wouldn’t hit Han
In episode 5 there is a blooper when the 2 storm troopers carry Han Solo to his cell after he was tortured. When the storm troopers throw him to the floor one of their helmets nearly comes off and he walks out with the helmet barely on. That's the closest I can think of a storm trooper's helmet coming off on screen.
Great video. Im really happy i found your channel. You Should really do the battle of geonosis from the clone wars. Also han solo's dl 44 was a common blaster in the star wars galaxy. Han's dl 44 was just modified illegally to produce a stronger blast and I think to hold more charges.
...If you notice, several bits are actually the same shot just re-used from a different angle. Like Leia kicking the guy in the chest, and Chewie picking up the rebel.
When the Ewoks made their attack, Han first focused on the trooper holding his confiscated blaster pistol and recovered it after the troopers got confused.
I love Snowtroopers, because I love snow and Snowtroopers actually look more creepy, because their helmets are just black eyes on a white hood. They look like kind of like Klansmen, lol XD Did you hear about the guy who dressed up like a Snowtrooper for Halloween on the South Side of Chicago? He never came back. Unlike Stormtroopers, people on the South Side don't miss :3
just to make it clear it is confirmed that nik sant (the bearded guy) is in fact captain rex and yes, he survived the battle also, he wasn't the only clone that fought this battle, but i dont know if there is any other known clone

Obviously the rail is just a hologram. The empire tends to cut corners in safety measures. Hence the second Death Star.

Uhhh ya sure
In Legends I believe they had an entire story for the character as well. Some old dude that decided he wanted to fight for freedom and your never too old to fight. I think that was way better then Rex being there. Rex was still a soldier and I'd go so far as to say practically a super soldier. Some old dude that decided your never too old or weak to help is way more powerful.
But Vader was cremated, so there's probably no grave?

Michel always says that the bearded old rebel is Rax, but in fact he doesn't have confidence, they asked Dave Filone himself, who is just one of the great heads of STAR WARS and also George Lucas' apprentice, says he doesn't care if he is Rex or not , he just wants to be faithful to his master , that is not Rex , but he says you can think what you want . You who are reading can say that in Rebels it was said that he fought in the battle, and yes it was said, but it was not said if it was a pilot or infantry. But if Dave Filone said you can find whatever you want then it's not wrong.
Well, Rex-Nik is an interesting take, becouse the guy in return of the jedi in canon is only identified as Nik in
Star Wars: Force Collection, a digital card game in 2013, and yes Dave refused the idea that Nik and Rex are the same person, but later in Galaxy of adventures it is clear that Rex is Nik Sant, there is an exact scene from the movie, showing Rex instead of Nik, so if it was the case that both Rex and Nik was there, than they should have included both Nik and Rex in the episode, but instead they just retconned Nik. @@attilafekete7892 Ok .
Actually that’s still Nik Sant, they haven’t canonically changed it as of yet. Dave Filoni even went on to say that he heavily considered it but in the end he decided to respect the canon and keep the character as Nik Sant rather than retcon him just because he wants to.
Rex still was at Endor.
I heard he ended up wanting to just leave it ambiguous whether Nik Sant was Rex.

So, admittedly, the old man may not actually be Rex despite the fact that Dave Filoni originally wanted to make that Rex due to him not wanting to upset the fans of the original canon character Nik Sant. With that said, it seems open ended enough where he can be considered either.
