  • The next topic for our Hot Rodding 101 series is Hubcaps or Wheel Covers. Hubcaps are very important to the overall look of a build, because they can be very plain and subtle, or be wild and stand out. Ford used many different style of wheels from the lates 20s to the 60s, and all use different hubcaps. Matt sits down and briefly covers wire wheel, wide five, "poverty caps, and full wheel covers. Comment below with your favorite hubcap combination!!

My favourite part of these "101" videos are the old photos. Some of them obviously just a picture taken of some (then) young man's pride and joy, parked out in the street. Even without knowing names and locations, those photos tell stories.

    Dog dishes work good haha

I always liked what around these parts they called Chrome reverse for the rims and baby moons for the caps. It would give definition to the rim because of the different heights of the rim all being chromed and topped off with that little baby moon cap that was Chrome. When I think of a poverty cap. I think what came on my grandfather 65 Chevy pickup. Everybody recalls different things. Great detailed information.

This was a good one! And good that you said that Cadillac hubcaps are not easy to get on. Even the '60s Cadillac caps are different diameter even they all are 15" !!!! But dam they look good when you find right rims or them on glue trim rim... 😎

I knew an old hot rodder back in the early 1970's who would "customize" hub caps. He would add knockoffs or flippers to caps that didn't have them. On caps like the sombrero he'd change out how the center looked.

I am a fan of spider caps with trim rings on plain steel wheels or just spiders on chrome reverse wheels.

Your photo of the Studebaker full wheel covers work for a larger car nicely. I used a 13 inch aftermarket Lancer 4 bar flipper on my '60 Metropolitan first car and '59 Galaxie full wheel covers on my '62 221 cu in V8 Fairlane 500 coupe (Ford's first small block). But today would be red painted w/beauty rings or chrome reversed. Ford wires something OEM. Painted open wheels could be the Cal Custom spiders, domed, Hildebrandt 2 or 3 bar knock off centers.

Sombreros are really only considered 1947-1952 caddy hubcaps. The later ones sometimes get grouped in by people who don't know the difference. I just scored a set on ebay for my Shoebox. I really wish they adapted easier to other wheels, I have a set of 54-55 hubcaps too that only fit caddy wheels.

Very nice "lesson" Matt !! I realize and know they can't be called "Hubcaps" but I'm a bit surprised you showed lots of examples but didn't mention the "wheel trim rings" that were so often used along with the early "dog dish" (32-35) caps. Currently, lots of folks are choosing to run ONLY the center cap but in the 50's, the 35 spokes with the trim rings was "king" on Model A's that were meant to have that "I'm not just an old A-Bone" look !! Very much like the Model A you showed at 3:06, only with the 35 spokes instead of the 40 style wheels.
That's still my favorite style. My 57 Sport Coupe runs painted Rally wheels with the disc brake cap and ribbed (40 style) trim rings. ;o)
